The Saga of This Well-Specced 911 GT3 Has Us DumbfoundedThis paint-to-sample GT3 has definitely seen some things.Sometimes we come across things on the internet that can't easily be explained. Things like photos of an extremely well-specced Porsche 911 GT3 filled with clothes and other random items in a repo lot, equipped with half-finished widebody panels and covered in dust. How did a quarter-million-dollar Porsche with so much desirability end up in a state like this? Where is it now? We needed to know more. This 991-generation six-speed Porsche 911 GT3, painted in a shade of paint-to-sample Mint Green, was originally used as a test mule for a widebody kit according to a post published by the Switchcars Instagram account on August 1. The account claims the car was repossessed in the sorry state you see above, where shortly after, someone allegedly began living out of it. It was eventually fixed up and reverted back to stock before being cycled through the dealer-only Manheim auction platform in 2019, according to a post in a private Facebook group. The 2022 Porsche 911 GT3 Approaches Motoring Perfection Ten years ago, the top-spec Porsche 911 Turbo S made 530 hp. The ultimate GT3, the RS 4.0, wasn’t far behind, with 493 hp. Compare to today: A brand-new Turbo S cranks out 640 hp, a 21 percent increase from a decade ago. The brand-new 992-generation GT3 you see here? It only gained nine ponies, to 502. Around 2009, roadgoing sports cars went ballistic. The Nissan GT-R, the McLaren MP4-12C, and even the 997-generation Porsche 911 Turbo set the standard. Turbocharging, direct injection, and torque-vectoring differentials churned out seem- ingly impossible performance figures: zero to 60 in just over two seconds, quarter-miles in the 10s, and top speeds regularly cracking 200 mph. The normal trickle-down of speed and power became a waterfall, technology avalanching into everyday coupes, sedans, and crossovers. Now Germany offers countless options for a 4500-pound, all- wheel-drive, coupe-shaped SUV with more than 500 hp; heavier but quicker luxury EVs offer even more power. Porsche 356 on skis heads to the South PoleThis Porsche 356 has been prepped for an expedition across Antarctica in the name of charityAs far as specialised rallying vehicles go, this 356 might take the cake for the most adventurous Porsche ever devised. While the exceedingly rare 597 Jagdwagen off-roader was created with harsh terrain in mind, this 1956 356 certainly was not, but a few subtle changes to the original have been made. The journey it has been created for? A 587-kilometre journey in Antarctica and the ticking off of the final land mass for Renée Brinkerhoff’s Project 356 World Rally Tour. An amateur rally driver, Brinkerhoff has already competed in the car on the other six continents across all types of surfaces and the Antarctic journey will be the final leg of the incredible project. “While we are extremely proud of completing each endurance rally we’ve entered, our true mission has been for our racing efforts to become a worldwide visual that supports our vocal pursuit to end child trafficking,” says Brinkerhoff. “We’ve had a goal to break barriers and set new records and we’re hopeful our Antarctic expedition will do just that.” The aim is to raise $1million to combat child trafficking and to provide critical support and care to victims around the world. Brinkerhoff and the Valkyrie Racing team have already sent off the Porsche to Chile where it will then be air-shipped to Antarctica aiming to arrive on December 5. The expedition will then begin and should be completed before the end of 2021. The project was delayed from 2020 and in the time since, has been re-engineered to cope with the terrain and subzero temperatures. Tracks have replaced the rear tyres and skis have been attached in place of wheels at the front. A new single-arm suspension system and coilover shock absorbers have been added to the rear tracks with an extra brace also fitted. The additions meant an increase in weight but there have been several countermeasures in order to prevent the tracks from digging into the ice. Spiked tyres will also be available should the journey require them and the car has been designed so that no wheel alignment changes will be required to make any switch. British explorer Jason de Carteret will join the expedition and act as navigator. He has led more than 50 expeditions including treks to the North and South Pole. Along with Senior Chassis Design Engineer for the project Kieron Bradley, de Carteret holds the record for the fastest overland journey to the South Pole travelling in the Thomson Reuters Polar Vehicle, which they designed. Brinkenhoff though will not have had any experience in the snow and ice of Antarctica prior to the journey commencing. “As often has been the case when taking on a new terrain in my 356, I have had no opportunity to test the car,” she added. “The test will come when we are at Union Glacier and we are very hopeful the new design will prove itself in spades. As I have been told by Jason and Kieron, there is no terrain on earth like Antarctica and therefore no place where a true test can be taken.” That inexperience has hardly deterred her before. She has put the 1956 Porsche 356 A to the test across all types of terrain in the past, entering several events across the globe as part of the project. Endurance rallies such as the Peking-to-Paris, East African Safari Classic Rally and La Carrera Panamericana have been completed and the car has tackled nearly 32,000 kilometres of rough to non-existent road. “While we are extremely proud of completing each endurance rally we’ve entered, our true mission has been for our racing efforts to become a worldwide visual that supports our vocal pursuit to end child trafficking. “We’ve had a goal to break barriers and set new records and we’re hopeful our Antarctic expedition will do just that.” Donations to the Project 356 campaign can be made directly here. www.motorsportmagazine.com/articles/rally/porsche-356-on-skis-heads-to-the-south-pole?fbclid=IwAR1T5Slqm75QtVkfwISVnjC_qQvONFXh0kRDpXAmMx_RnjNaDjEH0LjlCeE

The Man Behind the Porsche GT3 Is a Hell of a CharacterAndreas Preuninger is as interesting as the cars he develops. Which is to say, very.Andreas Preuninger proves the German stereotype (rigid, anti-fun) untrue. He’s been in charge of Porsche’s GT cars for 21 years. Many in the automotive business are buttoned-up, sticking to a corporate-approved script. Tall, athletic, almost always grinning, funny, and never afraid to speak his mind, Preuninger is the opposite. Last year at the L.A. Auto Show, we spoke with Andy to better know the person behind our Performance Car of the Year winner. Admiration of Porsche was almost a birthright. Preuninger grew up near Stuttgart and had an uncle who owned a Porsche. “The 911 thing hit me hard and early,” he says. www.roadandtrack.com/car-culture/a38832172/andreas-preuninger-porsche-gt-profile/?source=nl

Singer's Next Big Thing Is a 450-HP Tribute to the Original 911 TurboSince its founding in 2009, Singer Vehicle Design has made its legend primarily with "reimagined" versions of the long-hood 911 made by Porsche from 1964 to 1973. Now, it's presenting its reinterpretation of another Porsche classic, the original 911 Turbo, the 930. Typical of Singer's restorations, its Turbo is based on a 964 chassis—the 911 built from 1989-1994—but gets custom wide carbon-fiber bodywork. The engine is an air-cooled twin-turbo 3.8-liter flat-six with electric wastegates and water-to-air intercoolers mounted in the intake plenums. It makes 450 horsepower as standard, though customers can specify more, and there's a choice between rear- and all-wheel drive. The 930's iconic "shark fin" on the rear fender has been repurposed as an intake to feed cool air into the engine bay. Naturally, a six-speed manual is standard. "I think certainly for folks of my generation, the 930 Turbo was the pinup Porsche 911 of the era, it was the mythological icon, wasn't it?" Singer founder Rob Dickinson said in an interview with Road & Track. "It was certainly on my bedroom wall as an impressionable youth in the Seventies, and obviously on millions of others as well." www.roadandtrack.com/news/a39017129/singer-porsche-911-turbo-930/?source=nlI had a friend with a 930 years ago. WOW what a car!!!
