Schatz Hunts Down Stewart At Charlotte Dirt Track Donny Schatz was simply not going to be denied during Friday night’s Outlaw Showdown at The Dirt Track at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Schatz used the utmost patience and saved his equipment for when it counted most, using a turn two slide job with seven laps to go to wrest the lead from Shane Stewart after running second for the entire distance. His move for the lead came after three failed slider attempts in the first half of the feature. Once he got out front, the nine-time World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series champion drove away down the stretch. Schatz ran out to a 1.684-second advantage by the time the twin checkers waved over the field. Schatz’s win on Friday night was his ninth in 20 starts this season, his 11th at Charlotte and the 270th of his World of Outlaws career. “I knew at the beginning of that race, Shane was setting a pretty good pace, but I knew the track was going to change, the groove was going to move around a little bit and (the surface) was going to clean off,” noted Schatz. “I knew the crew would be chewing me out if I didn’t find a way to win, but once I started moving around and finding the lane my car just got better and better and better. “Traffic was fun. This place is tricky every time we come here,” Schatz added. “It’s fast, it’s slick … and there gets to be a little bit of a top and a bottom to where you can work a lot of different things to get a good result. It just feels good to get this Textron Off-Road team in victory lane; they deserve this.” After Schatz won the Sears/Craftsman Dash to earn the pole for the 30-lap feature, it was Stewart who got the jump when the green flag waved, driving around the No. 15 Arctic Cat/Ford Performance J&J sprinter on the outside to lead the first lap. Stewart then pulled out ahead of the pack, opening up nearly a second and a half over the field by lap five as Sheldon Haudenschild made moves from deeper in the pack, rising from eighth to fourth. By the seventh round, the leaders were in traffic and Schatz was starting to close, carving six tenths of a second out of Stewart’s advantage and moving to within a second of the No. 2 ENEOS Motor Oil/Kyle Larson Racing machine before the first yellow flag of the night waved on lap 10 for a slowing Jacob Allen. After electing the top groove for the restart, Stewart fended off the first slider attempt by Schatz, motoring around the high side to hold on by four car lengths. Before any real rhythm could be established, the caution flew again on lap 12 after Clyde Knipp and Steve Butler went around in the fourth turn. After that, the race ran uninterrupted to the finish, with Schatz pitching his car into both turns two and four on the final restart at lap 13 in an effort to try and work around Stewart. His move in the second turn nearly worked, but Stewart had just enough room and momentum to move back clear. With 10 to go, he started working the bottom in force and with eight to go, Schatz took a peek to the bottom as the track came to him before making the definitive pass one circuit later and driving into the Charlotte night. Stewart was forced to settle for a runner-up finish, tying his career-best mark at Charlotte from 2015 in his 24th appearance at the four-tenths-mile oval. “I feel like if I would have moved down sooner than I did, I might have been able to hold him off, but obviously Donny’s really tough when it comes to tracks like this,” said Stewart. “It’s tough to know what to do when you’re out front, but I’ve been doing this a long time and I’m kicking myself in the butt a little bit for losing a race like this. “Regardless, this is still a great, strong finish for us, and I’m hopeful we can carry this momentum into the summer months and start picking up some wins,” added Stewart, who is still winless with the Outlaws this season. “This team deserves to be winning and Kyle and I want it to be winning as well.” Defending Outlaw Showdown winner Logan Schuchart completed the podium after passing Brad Sweet on the final lap. Sweet and Haudenschild, who tagged the wall with 10 to go but survived to finish, were fourth and fifth. Busy Month Ahead For World Of Outlaws Late Models The World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series has completed 12 races so far this season. By the end of June that number will nearly double. On the docket for next month are 10 races in six states, including Tennessee, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Indiana and Missouri. The most demanding stretch of racing in June will be mid-month with three stops at three separate tracks in two states: Stateline Speedway in Jamestown, N.Y., on June 14; Ransomville Speedway in Ransomville, N.Y., on June 15; and Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio on June 16. Full-time World of Outlaws drivers and their teams will travel almost 400 miles between the trio of dirt tracks to face regional competitors in New York and Ohio. Each event will consist of a complete show containing hot laps, qualifying, heat races, Last Chance Showdowns and a 50-lap, $10,000-to-win Sears Craftsman Feature. Shane Clanton is the most recent World of Outlaws winner at Stateline Speedway. Clanton marched to a $10,550 victory during the series’ last visit to the third-mile dirt track in 2013. Clanton considers the northern territory to be somewhat of his second home. “This is like racing at home for me now,” said Clanton from victory lane in 2013. “We’ve picked up a lot of fans around here because we’ve spent so much time at Ron Davies’ shop the last few years. It’s like all of Ron’s fans have become my fans now too.” Davies, Clanton’s father-in-law, is based out of Warren, Pa., only 30 minutes from New York’s Stateline Speedway. “The coolest thing about (winning at Stateline) is (Michelle’s) grandfather built it,” said Clanton after his victory. “She’s fond of her grandfather, misses him a lot, so for her to have a win here at a big race is pretty special.” What made Clanton’s fourth victory of the 2013 season even more special was the fact that he collected the win on his wife Michelle’s birthday. “She sent me a message this morning and said, ‘I need a W for my birthday.’ I got her one I guess,” said Clanton. Clanton is still searching for his first win of the season, but remains one of the most consistent drivers on tour this season collecting five top-five and nine top-10 finishes of the 10-point races so far. Returning to the Ransomville Speedway dirt track for the first time since 2005, the World of Outlaws are ready to take on Ransomville for 50 laps in search of a $10,000 payday. During the series’ first and last visit to the New York dirt track, 2004 World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series champion Scott Bloomquist led flag-to-flag for 60 laps. Thirteen years later, the World of Outlaws has a largely new roster of drivers. Many new faces will take on Ransomville Speedway under the World of Outlaws banner, including defending World of Outlaws champion Brandon Sheppard, 2015 Rookie of the Year Brandon Overton, 2017 Rookie of the Year Devin Moran, four 2018 Rookie of the Year contenders — including Chris Ferguson, David Breazeale, Brent Larson, Timothy Culp — and more young hot shoes. Only two drivers who entered into the World of Outlaws 2005 event at Ransomville remain full-time drivers on tour today: 2015 series champion Clanton, and 2011 series champion and the final member of the original Dirty Dozen, Rick Eckert. Eckert’s last trip north to Ransomville Speedway was with the World of Outlaws in 2005. Eckert finished among the top 10. This season, Eckert is still on the hunt for his first Outlaw win. His best finish so far is fourth on Feb. 17 at Volusia Speedway Park during DIRTcar Nationals. His consistency in his new Rocket XR1 Paul Crowl Racing No. 7 places him fourth in the series standings and only 32 points behind a tie for third between Sheppard and Clanton. The 2017 edition of the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series at Wayne County Speedway was one of the most exciting races of the season as hot shoe Devin Moran rallied from a 19th starting position to battle with Brandon Sheppard for the lead before settling for second. The eventual 2017 Rookie of the Year gave his Ohio fans a show to remember. Of the series’ two visits to Ohio last season, Moran collected his first Outlaw win at Atomic Speedway in Chillicothe, Ohio, on May 26 before finishing second the following evening at Wayne County Speedway in Orrville, Ohio, on May 27. “As we travel all over the country, every region has different dirt, which makes the racing different,” said Moran. “I am definitely used to my Ohio dirt. The dirt helps me out as much as the track configuration. While both of these tracks have Ohio dirt, you have to treat them a lot differently. They have completely different configurations. Sweet Runs Down Schatz At Lawrenceburg Brad Sweet came from eighth and passed Donny Schatz on lap 26 to take the lead in a thriller at Lawrenceburg Speedway and never looked back for his second win of the season. Schatz, who led 15 laps, settled for second with David Gravel completing the podium in the Memorial Day Spectacular presented by KOI Auto Parts. Paul McMahan won the Sears Craftsman Dash to earn the pole for the 35-lap feature alongside Jason Johnson as both veterans looked for their first Outlaw wins of the year. McMahan led the opening circuit and continued to lead through a pair of cautions in the first handful of laps. The tricky Lawrenceburg cushion got the better of Sheldon Haudenschild on lap three. When action resumed, McMahan led as Schatz and Kyle Larson stalked closely behind. Brad Sweet established himself as a threat early moving by his good friend and fellow California native Larson for third on lap five. As lapped traffic intensified, McMahan bobbled out of turn two on the ninth circuit and Schatz and Sweet both pounced, shuffling McMahan back to third. Larson and McMahan waged war for third as Sweet began chasing down Schatz. Schatz was masterful in traffic as always, but Sweet was just as good as the duo sliced and diced their way through slower traffic. Simultaneously, McMahan and Larson exchanged multiple slide jobs for the third position, with Larson finally wrestling the position away on lap 21. After clearing a handful of lapped cars, the top three were nose-to-tail with 10 laps remaining. Sweet gained on Schatz on an open track and made multiple bids for the lead, before completing the pass on the nine-time series champion in turn two to lead lap 26. A lap later Larson battled Schatz for the runner-up position and had it as they crossed the line. Larson and Schatz continued to battle, but the Lawrenceburg cushion got the better of Larson, who spun in turn four, leaving McMahan nowhere to go as the caution flag waved with seven circuits remaining. On the restart, Sweet showed the speed that got him to the lead from eighth and powered away from the field as David Gravel went side-by-side with Schatz for second and grabbed the position before the final caution flag with three laps remaining for Ian Madsen. Gravel took a look underneath Sweet on the restart, opening the door for Schatz to steal second back from the CJB Motorsports No.5. Schatz had nothing left in the tank as Sweet won by 1.460 seconds. “I had a really good race car. It’s better to be in second sometimes, it allows you to move around,” Sweet said. “We were terrible in the dash going from sixth to eighth, but I was able to try some different lines, allowing us to make some changes for the feature. We kept getting better and better as the race went on. It’s great to get this NAPA Auto Parts team in victory lane where they belong, hopefully we can keep this momentum up in the upcoming summer months.” Schatz settled for second, with Gravel third. “I tried to go for the lead on the restart and lost a spot. We’ll take third, I can’t thank my guys and car owners enough for this opportunity,” Gravel said. “Hopefully we can continue to qualify well and build off of this going forward.” Shane Stewart and Parker Price-Miller, who started 16th, rounded out the top five. Gravel Chasing Fourth Straight Outlaws Win At Wilmot If it was up to David Gravel, the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series would have a handful of races each year at Wilmot Raceway in Wisconsin. Why? Because he is undefeated with the Outlaws at the track, having won each of the three starts he has made at Wilmot with the series. Gravel returns to Wilmot Raceway this weekend on Saturday, June 2 for the running of the Badger 40 for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series. The event will mark the third straight year the series has visited the track and the sixth overall appearance for the Outlaws at Wilmot, dating back to 2006. “I don’t know if there is any added pressure,” said Gravel when asked about his three-race Wilmot win streak. “You definitely always look forward to going to a track that you have run well at. I’m happy to get back there. The fans are awesome there and it’s a place that has always suited me well. Hopefully we can run just as good this time when we go back.” The driver of the No. 5 for CJB Motorsports has had a great amount success on smaller tracks, such as Wilmot, in his career with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series. He recently won on a quarter-mile at Tri-State Speedway in Indiana. Of Gravel’s 36 career Outlaws wins, 12 have come on bullring-style tracks. “Right now we seem to be better at the smaller tracks, for whatever reason,” Gravel noted. “We’ve been struggling a little bit on big tracks and just have to get that squared away. It seems like we have a good small-track package.” Gravel has passed more than a few cars this season. He has earned the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award twice. As of late, Gravel has also been near the top of the charts in time trials, setting fast time at Lawrenceburg Speedway in Indiana on Memorial Day. “We had some trouble in time trials at the beginning of the season, but we think we found the root of that problem,” Gravel explained. “Hopefully from here on out, we’ll be able to qualify where we should.” Gravel, who is coming off a career year in which he won 18 A-Features with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series and 20 races overall, has 36 career Outlaw wins. That total has him 17th on the Outlaws all-time win list. He is currently third in points on the strength of 16 top-10 finishes in 21 starts, with 10 of those being top-five performances. Along with his win at Lawrenceburg, Gravel was also victorious at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Texas. “We are there to win races and hopefully we can start to click off more very soon,” said Gravel. “We’ve had a pretty solid year so far. We started off the first couple of weeks kind of rough, but since then it’s been a pretty good season. We just have to keep doing what we are doing and hopefully will click off a few wins and keep pushing forward.” Gravel has been fast throughout the night at Wilmot, over the course of his three-race win streak at the track, having been among the top-five in time trials in two of those three events. The 25-year-old also has a pair of heat race wins and has been in the dash all three times. Last season at Wilmot, Gravel took the lead from Brad Sweet on lap 28 of the Badger 40. He was locked in an epic battle with Shane Stewart down the stretch, as the pair traded the top spot four times over the last 10 laps, including twice in the final three laps. “We obviously have really good notes at Wilmot,” said Gravel. “We are going to try to unload the same way and see what we have. Our confidence is high and we know we can do it. Restart Powers Gravel To Michigan Glory David Gravel powered from third on a restart to lead lap 16 and went on to win Friday night’s World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series Rumble in Michigan at I-96 Speedway. Shane Stewart continued his streak of top-five finishes with a second-place run and Brad Sweet, who stole the lead from Gravel only for it to be negated by a yellow, settled for third at the conclusion of the caution-filled feature. Sheldon Haudenschild won the dash and earned the pole for the 35-lap feature alongside 1995 I-95 Outlaw winner Joey Saldana. Haudenschild paced the field early as Gravel quickly maneuvered into second around Saldana. While Daryn Pittman and Saldana battled for third, Donny Schatz got a run off the bottom of turn four and surged by both of them to take the position. After an open red flag on lap 14, Schatz pounced on Gravel and stole the runner-up position before a caution flag for Gio Scelzi, who was running in the top 10, halted competition one lap later. Haudenschild led the field back to Green once again, but this time with the nine-time Series Champion next to him and David Gravel inside the second row. Gravel entered turn one on the cushion and powered around Schatz before squeezing under Haudenschild to steal the lead going into turn three with a breathtaking move. Schatz slowed on the frontstretch the following lap with a flat tire and Jason Johnson clipped his left rear trying to avoid the No. 15 and ended up getting upside down. Schatz’s team changed his flat tire and he started at the rear of the field. Gravel commanded the lead through a pair of restarts, before an off the pace Sheldon Haudenschild brought out the caution with six circuits remaining. Haudenschild, who slowed significantly, never stopped but was the cause of the caution and was sent to the rear accordingly. On the double-file restart, Sweet got a massive run off the cushion and diamonded underneath Gravel to lead into three, only to see the caution for a backward Cory Eliason negate the pass. Gravel controlled the ensuing restart and one more with two laps remaining to win his third World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series feature of the year and second in a row at I-96 Speedway. “I got a little lucky with the yellow coming out after Brad got me. It was tough to know what to do on the restarts and Brad got a good run and I tried to protect position, but that only hurt my exit and he got by me,” Gravel said “All those late restarts, you never know what’s going to happen. I just wanted to see the checkered. I’m just happy to get another win, this team deserves it. It’s our third win of the year, heading to a track (Wilmot) we love tomorrow,” Stewart scored his third consecutive top-five finish and while he remains in search of his first victory of the year. “Another great finish for these ENEOS guys, we have really turned our team around these past few races,” Stewart said. Sweet, who was in search of his second consecutive win, was in good spirits. “That’s racing, sometimes the cautions fall your way, sometimes they don’t,” Sweet said. “I should’ve got second, but I took one last shot at the win and gave up second to Shane. You never know if you don’t try,” Sweet added with a smile. Donny Schatz, in true championship form, came back from a flat tire at the halfway point to finish fourth. Brent Marks raced from 22nd to finish fifth. Hedgecock Upsets WoO LMS Regulars On Friday evening, Cory Hedgecock collected the biggest win of his career in front of a packed house at 411 Motor Speedway. The Loudon, Tenn., driver etched his name on the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series winners alongside the greatest late model drivers in history. “I knew if I ever had a chance at winning one of these races, it was no doubt going to be here,” said Hedgecock. “I am tickled to death… This track was absolutely phenomenal tonight… We were no doubt going to wreck her or bring her home.” Hedgecock claimed the lead from rookie of the year contender and leader David Breazeale on lap 23 and never looked back. Two late race cautions on lap 44 and lap 45 of the 50-lap event posed no threat to the driver of the No. 9 who held off charges from Jimmy Owens. “I just had mixed emotions. I did not want them cautions,” said Hedgecock. “During that long green run (lap 5-41), I’m not sure if I didn’t use my right rear a little bit up. It got hot on me. So, then I was like, ‘OK, well maybe I do want a caution’… I knew the No. 57 [of David Breazeale] was behind me and then the No. 20 [Jimmy Owens] popped up and I thought, ‘Oh shoot. This one is going to be tough.’ You know, we got that caution but I just kept getting the thumbs up. I am tickled to death. This is awesome.” Owens claimed second on lap 24 and relentlessly tried to reel in Hedgecock for the remaining 26 laps. Yet, The Newport Nightmare was unsuccessful in his attempts and settled for runner-up. “I tell you it’s awesome to get to see Cory win this,” said Owens. “Man, I come by him and we were just giving him a high five at the end of the race there and he was beating on his steering wheel. It’s awesome to see someone get so emotional over a win and congratulations to him. Those guys race hard all weekend. He’s a tough driver to get around down here.” Mike Marlar rounded out the podium at 411 Motor Speedway giving Tennessee drivers a clean sweep of the top-three. “We’re having a lot of fun,” said Marlar. “It’s fun racing and Tennessee guys are pretty tough. This is a great big team sport and my car owner Ronnie Delk and his family are over in the pits. Our car is from Brucebilt right here in Knoxville. Smithbilt Homes is also right here in Knoxville so we have a lot of support out of the East Tennessee area. Also, I have an awesome crew. If it wasn’t for these guys I wouldn’t be standing here.” When Hedgecock passed under the checkers, Owens and Marlar split to the outside of his car and the trio celebrated three-wide down the front stretch. “I started to make him do a donut because it didn’t look like he was going to celebrate but I thought they might take that the wrong way,” said Owens. “We were just trying to get up there and figure out what he was doing, that’s all we were trying to do,” laughed Marlar. “Cory is an awesome driver and he wins a ton of races around here. Finally, It’s Brent Marks In WoO Sprints Brent Marks passed Daryn Pittman on lap 13 and went on to annihilate the field for his first World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory Saturday night at Wilmot Raceway. Marks nursed a flat right-front tire the final lap and still took the checkered flag 4.514 seconds ahead of second-place Pittman with Brad Sweet completing the podium. Daryn Pittman won the dash, earning the pole for the 40-lap feature alongside Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year contender Ian Madsen. A brief, but heavy, rain shower drenched Wilmot Raceway during the Last Chance Showdown and caused for nearly a two-hour delay before the feature. The first lap of the Feature got off to a bumpy start for veterans Kraig Kinser and Joey Saldana, as they both ended upside down in turn one. Both drivers were uninjured in the accident, but neither returned to competition. Kinser, who set quick time over the field for the first time this season, started third and his opening-lap accident moved Brent Marks from inside the third row, to outside the second row. Pittman controlled the field on the second attempt and Marks quickly established himself as a threat, maneuvering his way to second at the conclusion of the first lap. The final caution of the evening waved on lap five when Gio Scelzi and Madsen got together battling for fourth on the backstretch, with the latter getting the worst of it, ending his night. Pittman continued to show the way as he quickly reached the back of the field almost instantaneously at the Wilmot bullring. Pittman cleared the first handful of lapped cars while Marks stayed right with him, waiting to pounce. On lap 13, Pittman remained bottled up in traffic and Marks was able to sneak underneath to lead the first Outlaw laps of his career. From there, it was pure domination. Marks quickly distanced himself from Pittman and began lapping cars at a torrid pace. With 10 laps remaining, Marks’ lead was half a track over Pittman. Marks hopped the cushion in turn two with seven laps remaining, allowing the lapped car of Jason Johnson to get back by the leader momentarily. Marks would fight his way back by Johnson and go on to victory. When Marks’ car arrived in victory lane, the right-front tire was punctured and flat, presumably from when he hopped the cushion. “This is a dream come true,” Marks said upon exiting his family-owned No. 19. “It was nice to finally have a night with no troubles lingering throughout the night, but I never expected this. This is awesome. I’ve been trying so long to get my first Outlaw win, this is unreal.” When asked about the closing laps, Marks referenced the flat tire, “I could barely turn the car. I was just hanging on, it was a handful.” Quite possibly the most remarkable thing about the Brent Marks Racing No. 19 team is the fact that the team has one crew member. Jesse Lentz and Marks, who prior to last season had never raced further west than Knoxville, travel from race to race competing against teams not only with multiple crew members, but crews and drivers with decades of World of Outlaws experience in their back pocket. “It’s been tough, Jesse and I have been really exhausted, especially with all the problems we’ve had the past few weeks. I can’t wait to get back to the hotel and sleep until noon,” Marks said. Kasey Kahne Racing teammates Daryn Pittman and Brad Sweet both echoed their happiness to see a fellow World of Outlaws regular get his first victory. “I made too many mistakes and allowed Brent to get by. But truthfully, I don’t think it mattered, because once he got by me, he was in his own zip code. You hate to lose races and give up the lead, but honestly, I’m happy for him. I know what it’s like and what it feels like to get that first win. It was a solid weekend for us, we’ll come back Tuesday and try to get a win,” Pittman said. “Brent did a great job. I’m happy for him, it is always fun to get your first win. We’ll take a podium and look for a win on Tuesday at Fairbury,” Sweet said. David Gravel’s winning streak at Wilmot came to an end as he finished fourth, with Gio Scelzi scoring a career-best fifth aboard the Indy Race Parts No. 71. Owens Goes To The Volunteer Bank
Jimmy Owens collected his second World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series victory of the season after a thrilling feature Saturday at Volunteer Speedway. Owens and Chris Madden battled for the lead for the majority of the race until Owens successfully completed the pass on lap 47 of the 50-lap event. “Man, it was an awesome, awesome track tonight,” said Owens. “It’s just one of those deals where you didn’t want to be leading because you didn’t know if the track groove was going to be up high or down low, but the groove was pretty much wherever you wanted it to be. We had a good car but hats off to Chris and them. It was a heck of a race. I enjoyed every bit of it. I hope we made the fans happy.” Madden commanded the lead from polesitter Michael Chilton on lap 13 and continued to hold off a close battle within the top-five between Owens, McDowell, Chilton and Sheppard. The 50-lap event had zero cautions which made it difficult for the race leader to pull away from the pack. “The track was so racy so you could run up high, down low, wherever you wanted to go and so you didn’t know where the guy in front of you was going to go from one lap to another,” said Owens. “Nobody knew where they were going especially with lapped traffic. We’re just proud to bring this Ramirez Motorsports race car home.” With only three laps remaining, Owens pulled the trigger and slid by Madden for the lead. Unfortunately for Madden, who had led nearly three-fourths of the event, a lapped car kept him contained ultimately allowing Owens to pull away and claim the $10,000 payday in his home state. “We’re a little disappointed we didn’t get the win,” said Madden. “Lapped traffic got us bottled up there. We had the best car here tonight and we’ve done a hell of a job on our race car this year. We got speed, so you know, the wins will come. It’s easy to run second behind a guy and set him up for a win. He pulled a big slide job and there just happened to be a lapped car and I didn’t want to crash him so it is what it is.” McDowell rounded out the podium during the World of Outlaws first return to Volunteer Speedway since 2008. “I was seeing a heck of a race there, I just couldn’t capitalize and get a breakthrough traffic. Haudenschild Rules Fairbury WoO Sprint Sheldon Haudenschild took the lead on a lap-three restart and never looked back, scoring his fourth World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the season in the inaugural visit to Fairbury American Legion Speedway in the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown. Jacob Allen matched his career-best with a runner-up finish with Kyle Larson completing the podium. Haudenschild was only 21st quick in qualifying and started seventh in his heat. However, he charged to a second-place finish in the heat to earn a spot in the dash. Haudenschild went on to win the dash, earning the pole for the 40-lap feature but it was fellow front row starter Hunter Schuerenburg getting the jump at the drop of the green flag. Schuerenburg, in search of his first WoO triumph, paced the field, pounding the cushion before a caution on lap three for a backward Shane Stewart halted action. Schuerenburg elected the top on the double-file restart, but his No. 20 machine stumbled on the restart as Haudenschild, who restarted alongside him, powered to the lead. Schuerenburg drastically fell to the back of the field with a flat tire. Things went from bad to worse as Tanner Thorson jumped Schuerenburg’s rear tire and went for a tumble. Schuerenburg changed a flat tire and restarted at the rear of the field. Haudenschild motored away from the field and reached lapped traffic quickly around the bullring. Jacob Allen, who shattered the track record in qualifying, moved into second with his Shark Racing teammate, Logan Schuchart, running third. Haudenschild put on a lapped traffic clinic, slicing and dicing his way through the field. A hellacious battle between Kyle Larson and Brent Marks for fifth was momentarily halted when a lapped car got loose and forced both Larson and Marks to take evasive action with 17 laps remaining. Both drivers spun, but kept going, forcing the rest of the field to check up. Greg Wilson had nowhere to go and got upside down. Gio Scelzi and Paul Nienhiser’s top-10 runs also came to an end in the accident. With rubber prominent on the high line, World of Outlaws officials ruled single-file restarts for the remainder of the evening. Haudenschild continued to show the way as he reached traffic with the rest of the field directly on his tail. With eight laps remaining, Schuchart pulled a slider on Allen to secure second and set his sights on Haudenschild. Haudenschild remained locked down in the rubber as Schuchart looked for a way to steal the lead. Schuchart peeked a car-length higher than Haudenschild in turn two with three laps remaining, but that was the end of Schuchart’s night as a flat tire on the No.1s brought out the final caution of the evening. Haudenschild distanced himself from Allen, who was in search of his first Outlaw win, on the late restart while Larson and Cory Eliason waged war for third. The pair of Californians exchanged sliders back and forth with Larson grabbing the final podium spot. Haudenschild went on to win his fourth feature of the year aboard the NOS Energy Drink sponsored Stenhouse Jr.-Marshall No. 17. “My car was really good early and really good in the rubber,” Haudenschild said. “I was able to get good drive on the early restart, grab the lead and get to the top. Other than a couple of times where I tagged the wall, I felt really good and felt like I was making good laps in traffic,” the Wooster.” Allen’s second-place finish tied a career-best and was his first top-ten finish of 2018. “My team has worked really hard. Sheldon’s been one of my best friends for a long time, obviously I would have liked to get my first Outlaw win, but I’m extremely happy with second,” Allen said. Larson, who slipped out of the top ten early, was pleased to get back to the podium. “I was pretty good as the race went on. Johnson Gets Elbows Up At Jackson Jason Johnson powered from seventh to claim his first World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series feature triumph of the season during the opening round of the 40th annual AGCO Jackson Nationals presented by ASI Contracting Friday at Jackson Motorplex. The recently reconfigured oval overcame more than an inch and a half of rain Thursday evening into Friday. The hooked-up track made for a wild night of wheel-to-wheel action on the four-tenths-mile oval. Johnson drove all four wheels above the cushion, which was approximately halfway up the track, to maneuver from fifth to third place early in the 30-lap World of Outlaws main event. He took second a couple of laps later from polesitter Lynton Jeffrey, who led the first five laps of the race before Daryn Pittman took over the top spot during a restart on lap six. Pittman caught traffic at the midpoint of the race and Johnson was in position to strike. He slid Pittman for the lead entering turn one on Lap 16 and the duo nearly banged wheels in turn two while trying to navigate traffic. A lap later an incident nearly happened again in the same corner before Johnson was able to pull away in traffic to win by more than three seconds. “When the track has grip that’s my kind of track,” Johnson said. Pittman held off Kasey Kahne Racing teammate Brad Sweet for the runner-up result. “Leading races and running second is pretty disappointing,” Pittman said. “Once we got to the backmarkers my car got super tight. (Johnson) did a better job of getting through those lapped cars.” Sweet rounded out the podium after battling similar handling as his teammate. “It was a tricky track,” he said. “I was really tight once we got to traffic.” David Gravel maneuvered from 12th to fourth place to earn the Hard Charger Award for passing the most cars and Brian Brown advanced from 10th to fifth place. It’s Jason Johnson Again In Jackson Thriller Jason Johnson posted his second-straight World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series feature victory on Saturday afternoon at Jackson Motorplex. The victory came during the 40th annual AGCO Jackson Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores preliminary program that was postponed from Thursday. Johnson, who led the final 14 laps to capture Friday’s event at the recently reconfigured four-tenths-mile oval, slid polesitter Jacob Allen in turn four on Lap 15 while the duo duked it out in heavy traffic. Allen kept Johnson within striking distance for the remainder of the 30-lap main event and he pulled within four tenths of a second with five laps remaining, but Johnson made the right decisions in the closing laps to hang onto his second triumph in an 18-hour span. “Things are clicking,” Johnson said. “He’s tough. He did what he had to do to get (the lead on) the start. I was pacing myself. I was waiting for the rubber to come in. Daryn (Pittman) came sliding across in front of me. I started moving around and was fortunate to get by Jacob. From there I was pacing myself off lapped cars.” Allen, who led the first 14 laps of the race, finished in the runner-up position to tie his career-best World of Outlaws result. “He’s a great race car driver,” Allen said of Johnson. “He found a certain part of the rubber before I did. He’s not going to make mistakes. I’m trying to get that first win and it was close. Today was fun and I’m excited for later on today.” Brad Sweet maneuvered from ninth to a third-place result, marking his second straight podium finish and fifth in a row at Jackson Motorplex counting all three nights of last year’s AGCO Jackson Nationals. “I thought the track crew did a nice job to give us something to work with,” Sweet said. “I was able to come from ninth and pass a lot of cars and we were in the hunt.” Logan Schuchart rallied from 12th to a fourth-place finish with Pittman rounding out the top five. Lynton Jeffrey established a new track record during qualifying for the second-straight race. He and Tim Kaeding led qualifying in their respective groups. Jeffrey, Pittman, Terry McCarl and Kerry Madsen were the heat race winners. David Gravel won the Last Chance Showdown and Allen picked up the dash victory. Schatz Banks $40,000 Jackson Nationals Donny Schatz maneuvered through the field en route to winning the 40th annual AGCO Jackson Nationals presented by ASI Contracting Saturday night at Jackson Motorplex. Schatz rallied from seventh to pocket the $40,000 top prize for claiming the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series feature and the emotion of the moment wasn’t lost in victory lane. “Hot damn, we just won the Jackson Nationals,” he exclaimed. Jason Johnson, who won the two preliminary rounds on Friday and Saturday afternoon, led the first 17 laps of the 40-lap race. Schatz advanced into fourth place on lap two and he was running second on lap four. Johnson entered traffic on lap eight and Schatz stayed within striking distance before using the bottom groove to his advantage in turns three and four just before the midpoint. Schatz took over the top spot on lap 18. He survived one final restart with 15 laps remaining and a late rally from Johnson in traffic. “The car was awesome,” Schatz said. “We had a really good balance. It was fun to get by (Johnson). He’s been pretty good the last couple of races.” Johnson finished second by less than seven tenths of a second. “It was a solid weekend,” he said. “When (Schatz) got by was when the rubber started coming in.” Brian Brown rounded out the podium after having a great battle with fourth-place finisher David Gravel throughout the race. “Hats off to Gregg (Bakker) and everybody who works on the track,” Brown said. “It’s an honor to finish on the podium.” Logan Schuchart earned a fifth-place result. Caleb Johnson won the RaceSaver sprint car feature. Brent Marks Gunning To Continue Bullring Momentum Heading into his rookie season with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series in 2017, Brent Marks had limited experience in a sprint car on smaller tracks. After all, he cut his teeth racing in Central Pennsylvania, which is dotted with bigger tracks, mainly half-miles. However, Marks has been adapting pretty well to the smaller tracks and learning the nuances of bullring-style racing, which was well evidenced on June 2 when he scored his first-career World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series win at Wilmot Raceway in Wisconsin. Marks will return to one of the most famed bullrings in the country this weekend, as the Outlaws make their first of two appearances this season at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, N.D., on Friday for the first leg of the Gerdau Recycling Northern Tour. “We have a track back home, Path Valley (Speedway) that is a small track,” said Marks. “I used to race go-karts there and we raced sprints cars there from time to time. I was kind of able to relate to that track, the first time we went to River Cities (Speedway). It’s a really cool track and I had fun up there last year. I’m really looking forward to going back.” Marks finished eighth in his debut at River Cities Speedway last June. The native of Myerstown, Pa., started 21st in the 40-lap race and powered his way into the top 10, which earned him the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award. Making the feat even more impressive was the fact that the track was extremely fast, due to rain earlier in the evening. Marks points to a delicate balance that is needed when racing at River Cities Speedway, especially when in traffic. “If you are too patient, there is someone right there behind you ready to pounce,” he explained. “I liked it a lot last time we were there and it got slick. The first time it was wet and heavy and a bit trickier. I’m more of a slick track fan. When it’s wet and heavy and that fast, if you make a mistake, there is a guy right there ready to take your spot. You have to really be smart at these little race tracks.” Marks has passed plenty of cars in feature events this season and is near the top of the leaderboard in that statistical category. He also has earned the KSE Racing Products Hard Charger Award four times this year. The sophomore driver is quick to point out, though, that it means he has been starting further back in main events, which stems back to time trials and heat race finishes. “We’ve had really good cars comes feature time,” Marks shared. “We just have been struggling the first half of the night. We’ve started a lot of nights out with not a lot of speed and then adjust as the night goes on and usually we hit on something. “Hopefully, the next time we go back to a particular track, whether it’s later this year or next year, hopefully we’ll start the night out faster. It’s been a huge learning curve this season and last year was, too.” Marks recently welcomed a second crew member to join Jesse Lentz on the road with him. For the first four-plus months of the season, it was just Marks and Lentz grinding it out against teams that have three full-time crew members. Entering this weekend’s pair of races in North Dakota, Marks is just 30 points out of the top 10 in the series standings. He has three top-five and nine top-10 finishes, including his win. “We just have to keep doing what we are doing,” said Marks. “Getting a win at Wilmot was a huge morale boost for both Jesse and myself. We have to make sure everything is running good and our cars are handling well and our equipment is staying fresh. It’s Marlar As WoO LMS Hits Ransomville The World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series returned to Ransomville Speedway for the first time in 13 years on Friday evening and the feature was worth the wait. The 50-lap event saw three different leaders as Mike Marlar claimed the victory and the $10,000 payday. The driver out of Winfield, Tenn., commandeered the lead of the feature with only 10 laps remaining in the event bypassing Brandon Sheppard, Chase Junghans, Chris Madden and Chub Frank for the top spot. “Honestly, it took me a while to figure out the race track,” said Marlar. “It kind of had some dirty spots and took me about 15-20 laps to figure out what I was doing wrong. Once I got that cleared up this thing came to life. Fun race and I’m glad I got by those guys.” Wheelman of the Rocket1 Racing machine, Sheppard claimed the lead from polesitter Tyler Erb on lap 11 and began to set a torrid pace ahead of the field. Unfortunately for Erb, who was having one of his best runs of his season, on lap 23 he suffered a flat right-front tire putting him into the wall in turn one. Sheppard held more than a two second lead over several ongoing battles for second and third involving Madden, Marlar, Chub, and Junghans. In only two laps time, Marlar sliced Sheppard’s lead by more than half. Marlar made the move on the outside and passed Sheppard at the line on lap 40. By the time the checkers fell, Marlar had created a 2.115 second lead. “I’ve got to say thanks to my crew Jerry [Sprouse] and Josh [Davis] and my wife [Stacey] as well as Brian Daugherty and Erik from Integra who are here this week helping us and everyone from Rocket,” said Marlar. “We had an up and down night. I had the radiator knocked out after the heat and this and that. I’d like to thank them guys. I get to stand up here and be the hero but those boys are always pulling it off.” Sheppard finished second in the World of Outlaws shootout at Ransomville Speedway. “It was a pretty crazy race out there,” said Sheppard. “It got really dusty and if I got off the bottom I couldn’t really see where I was going…I think Mikey had a little better tires on than I did so hats off to him. He caught me sleeping down here on this end on the top. We had a really good piece and a really good weekend so far. We’ll take a second place… We have a pretty good run going here so hopefully, we can keep it going the rest of the year.” Junghans rounded out the podium by tying his best World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series finish of the season. “Hopefully we get pretty soon but I’ll take it after last night,” said Junghans on his 13th place finish at Stateline Speedway one night prior. “Hopefully we’re going in the right direction.”
Pete Bicknell won the 358 modified feature and Chris Burek topped the sportsman event.

Schatz Owns River Cities Speedway North Dakota’s own Donny Schatz continued his dominance at River Cities Speedway, passing Kerry Madsen on lap 25 to win his 11th World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series feature of the season. It was Schatz’s sixth win in his last seven starts at the bullring. Brad Sweet came forward to finish second with Madsen settling for third. Madsen won the dash and led the field to the green flag for the 40-lap event, but Aaron Pierce brought out the first of many cautions in the lengthy event, flipping off the banking on the opening lap. Madsen got the jump on the start once again, utilizing the bottom of the speedway as Schatz pounded the cushion. Lap six saw third-starting Austin McCarl go for a light tumble in turn four, bringing out the red flag once again. Four laps later, Cory Eliason and Jade Hastings bounced off the racing surface, bringing out another caution and keeping the leaders out of lapped traffic. On each restart, Schatz, on the top, was able to stay with Madsen for a lap or two before the Australian would distance himself on the bottom. Sheldon Haudenschild’s Stenhouse Jr.-Marshall Racing No.17 lost power while running sixth on lap 17, bringing out the caution. A caution on the ensuing double-file restart brought the field back to green under single-file conditions. Following that caution, for the first time, the leaders reached traffic on the bullring. Lapped cars were littered all over the racing surface. Madsen was able to clear the first few cars getting underneath them while remaining committed to the bottom. Schatz would follow suit on the bottom by some of the lappers, but the entire capacity crowd at River Cities Speedway knew the Tony Stewart Racing No.15 would be able to maintain speed on the cushion as well. Schatz capitalized on Madsen’s inability to clear a slower car on the backstretch, powering around the No. 2m off of turn four to lead lap 25. Schatz used the same line to clear the lapped car before getting back to the bottom to protect the lead. Sweet followed Schatz on the cushion around Madsen as well and would line up next to Schatz with eight laps remaining after the caution flew for Jason Johnson. Schatz motored away on the restart and did the same thing on the final restart with four laps to go. Sweet finished 2.369 seconds behind Schatz. “I kept trying that top and I knew if we got into traffic I might be able to make it work,” Schatz said. “You never know when your last win is going to be.” Sweet was upbeat about his runner-up finish. “We were fast, I had a couple of lines working in one and two. I would have liked to give Donny a better run for his money, but he never missed a mark out front. Eventually, we’ll figure out how to beat him here,” Sweet added. Madsen led the first 24 laps but settled for third after losing the lead in lapped traffic. “I didn’t do a good enough job. I became immobile in traffic. I tried to play a patient game and I should have been more aggressive,” Madsen said. Shane Stewart had a strong run coming from 11th to finish fourth with Daryn Pittman completing the top five. Pittman Powers to 4th Win of Season at Nodak Daryn Pittman passed Cory Eliason on Lap 22 and never looked back, winning his fourth World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series Feature of 2018 Sunday evening at Nodak Speedway. Pittman hounded the California native for the majority of the race before making the race-winning move in turn one. Pittman’s Kasey Kahne Racing teammate Brad Sweet finished second with Donny Schatz completing the podium. Eliason won the Sears Craftsman Dash to earn the pole of the 30-lap Feature in his first career start at Nodak Speedway. Eliason powered away on the initial start, as Pittman maneuvered underneath front row starter David Gravell to take command of second down the backstretch of the opening circuit. The lone caution of the event flew for Jack Croaker on Lap 5. Eliason again motored away on the ensuing restart as Pittman had his hands full with his KKR teammate Sweet. Sweet had the second position at the line on Lap 6, but Pittman muscled back underneath to take the position back the next lap. Eliason set a strong pace out front in search of his second career Outlaw triumph. But as Eliason worked lapped traffic, the rest of the field closed in. At the halfway point, a blanket could be thrown over the top five. Pittman reached Eliason’s tail tank on multiple occasions, looking for a way around the Roth Motorsports No.83. Pittman pulled even with Eliason in turn one on Lap 18, but the latter maintained the lead with momentum around the top down the backstretch. Pittman got another run, this time on the top of three and four, that propelled his Ionomy-sponsored No.9 to the lead into turn one on Lap 22. From there, Pittman proved he was the class of the field, distancing himself and getting through lapped traffic like the veteran he is. While Pittman pulled away, the war continued behind him. Sweet, Eliason, Schatz and Gravel all jockeyed for position in heavy traffic. Sweet, who at this point had lost his brakes completely, and Schatz shuffled Eliason back to fourth on Lap 25. Out front though, it was all Daryn Pittman, who went on to win by more than three seconds for his fourth win of the year. “My car was really good all night long from the moment we unloaded,” Pittman, who set Quick Time and won his Heat Race, said. “The last few weeks we’ve really been hitting stride. I love winning before we have a week off and I love winning on Father’s Day, I am extremely blessed to travel with my wife and kids out here,” Pittman, the 2007 Outlaw winner at Nodak, added before thanking the large crowd for coming out on a Sunday. Sweet was pleased with another runner-up finish. “We were battling with Daryn and Cory the whole race, I actually lost brakes with around ten laps to go and I was just hanging on. You don’t realize how much you need brakes until they are gone,” Sweet said with a smile. “We’ll take another second place and move on to next week,” the Grass Valley, CA native added. North Dakota’s own Donny Schatz was in good spirits after finishing third and thanked the large crowd for coming out on Father’s Day. “Obviously, we would have liked to get a win, but to be out here on Father’s Day in Minot was great. Thanks to all the fans for their support these past 25 years and for supporting dirt track racing,” Schatz added. Last year’s winner at Nodak, David Gravel settled for fourth with Eliason getting shuffled back to fifth. Sheldon Haudenschild earned KSE Hard Charger honors coming from 13th to finish sixth. Logan Schuchart, Brent Marks, Ian Madsen and Dominic Scelzi completed the top ten at Nodak. Bloomquist Skips Drug Test, Suspended By DIRTcar DIRTcar officials have suspended legendary dirt late model ace Scott Bloomquist for not participating in random drug testing on Friday during Firecracker 100 weekend at Lernerville Speedway. Bloomquist, 54, was one of 16 drivers randomly selected by a blind draw completed by a member of the Lernerville track crew. According to a DIRTcar Racing penalty report, Bloomquist had five hours to complete the test after not being able to provide a sample during initial check in with Drug Free Sport. The other 15 drivers completed the sampling, with three drivers requiring two attempts to provide an adequate sample. World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series Director Matt Curl made multiple attempts to assist Bloomquist to the testing area. Drug Free Sport and series officials set an 11 p.m. deadline for Bloomquist to meet with Drug Free Sport officials and provide his sample, but he failed to arrive by the deadline. Drug Free Sport, the organization that oversees World Racing Group’s substance abuse policy, classified his absence as a “test refusal” according to the DIRTcar penalty report. As a result, Bloomquist has been suspended for 90 days from all DIRTcar competition and fined $1,000. He can reduce the suspension to 60 days should he complete an alcohol or drug education program. He must also pass two drug tests during the final 14 days of his suspension. Bloomquist’s suspension comes on the heels of his controversial victory in the June 9 Dirt Late Model Dream at Ohio’s Eldora Speedway. He was selected for a random drug test, but fell in the mud after a rain storm and was taken to the hospital on June 8, causing him to miss his drug test. Tom Deery, the World Racing Group’s president and chief operating officer, told SPEED SPORT that all signs indicated the Eldora incident was a fluke situation and that Bloomquist would go back into the random testing pool right away. “Drug Free has said that, obviously, the next opportunity we have to test Scott, we will. He’ll fall right back into the system. This doesn’t give him a get out of jail card. He’s back into the system now,” Deery told SPEED SPORT. Bloomquist told DirtonDirt.com that he plans to undergo rotator cuff surgery to fix the injured shoulder from the fall at Eldora. The surgery is expected to keep him out of action at least three months. Bloomquist is second in the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series standings with the next race scheduled June 30 at Ohio’s Portsmouth Raceway Park. Bloomquist competed in and finished fourth in last weekend’s 100-lap Clash at the Mag Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series race at Mississippi’s Magnolia Motor Speedway. He explained that after a dismal showing in his heat race on Friday night at Lernerville Speedway that saw him spin on lap two, he told his team to pack up and leave the track. He said he was unaware that he’d be required to come back and complete the drug test and by the time he found out he had to return, it was too late. He said he plans to continue to field his No. 0 dirt late model in select events while he recovers from surgery with a driver that will be announced later. Mike Norris Is Surprise Lernerville Firecracker Michael Norris defeated the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series regulars while defending his home turf at Lernerville Speedway during the second night of the 12th annual Firecracker 100. Norris had a perfect Friday night. He set the fastest qualifying time in Group B, collected his heat win by fending off a hard-charging Chris Madden, drew the pole and led flag-to-flag in the 30-lap feature. After climbing on the rooftop of his No.72 Rocket Chassis powered by Gary Henry Racing Engines, announcer Rick Eshelman approached Norris. Norris then sighed in relief and said, “I need a second” as he tried to take in the moment of his first World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series triumph. “This pretty much makes my year,” said Norris. “I got to thank my crew guy Dakota. I’ve never had a signal guy here and we have talked about doing it forever and he was standing on the front stretch and man, that was nice. I knew when there was one-to-go and I knew when I could ride.” The reigning track champion now has five wins and two second-place finishes in seven races at the four-tenths-mile oval this season. “This one is for my dad and my grandparents,” continued Norris as his victory began to sink in and he became overwhelmed with emotion. “I grew up coming here and used to sit right there (grandstands outside of turn four) with my grandma… I can’t say no more. Thanks to all of the fans, sponsors, family, and Dan Bauman (Lernerville track operations) for giving me that cushion down there. We’re alright.” Norris held off multiple charges from 2017 rookie of the year Devin Moran throughout the 30-lap shootout. “First of all, congrats to them guys,” said Moran. “That is a freaking awesome win. Home track in front of a home crowd for a race like this. That’s awesome.” A humble Moran congratulated Norris despite the fact that he and his Tye Twarog/ Donnie Moran Racing team are still in search of their first win of the season. “I actually felt like we had the car to beat we just got stuck behind them two lap cars and [Norris] gained a straight-away on me,” explained Moran. “We ran him back down and I knew we had something. Wylie [Moran] showed me with the sticks I was pulling away from Madden a little bit. It’s just one of those deals where this is [Norris’s] night and we just have to take notes and hopefully in the race tomorrow we get to put our notes toward that.” Madden, the series point leader and winner of Thursday night’s feature at Lernerville Speedway, rounded out the podium. “Track condition and track position is everything,” said Madden. “If we could go back and get the heat race win and not have had that caution in the heat we would have started in the first two rows and maybe would have won the feature again tonight but congratulations to Norris and his team, and Devin and his guys work hard so congratulations to them on the runner-up spot. Overall, we’ve done a little trial-and-error tonight and our car wasn’t as good tonight as it was last night. So, we definitely have something to build off of.” One win and a third-place finish for Madden places him at the top of the Firecracker 100 rankings.
