Jokers Wild Goes To Shane Stewart There’s no denying it has been a tough year for Shane Stewart and the Kyle Larson Racing No. 2 team. That changed in a big way on Thursday evening at Eldora Speedway when Stewart passed Jacob Allen on a lap-10 restart and never looked back to win the Jokers Wild to kick off Kings Royal week at Eldora Speedway. Shaffer and Donny Schatz completed the podium. David Gravel won the dash, earning the pole for the 30-lap feature in search of his fifth victory of the season aboard the CJB Motorsports No.5. Gravel led the opening lap with Shane Stewart, who started next to him, in tow. While those two separated from the field, all eyes were on Allen who charged from ninth-starting position to take third on lap seven. Two laps later, Allen, glued to the bottom, took the lead to a large roar from the Eldora Speedway crowd in search of his first WoO triumph. Gravel and Stewart battled for second, with the duo making contact and Gravel ending up backward with 10 laps complete. “I thought I had David clear, it was all my fault. I don’t ever want to race like that,” Stewart said. Allen elected the bottom on the double-file restart, but it was Stewart taking control of the field down the backstretch in the Kyle Larson Racing ENEOS-sponsored No.2 machine. Stewart stretched out the lead around the famous Ohio half-mile as Shaffer and Schatz began their charge forward. By lap 20, Shaffer had worked by Allen for second and set his eyes on Stewart. Schatz stormed by Allen for third on lap 24. Shaffer closed in on Stewart in lapped traffic, but never truly challenged for the lead as Stewart would win his first feature of the season by 1.665 seconds. “I never want to win a race by crashing a guy,” Stewart said. “We’ve been close to winning a couple of times this year, hopefully, we can have some momentum now and get rolling. It’s always special to win at this track. To get a win going into the Month of Money is huge, I feel like we have a pretty good package right now. We’ll see how the next two nights play out, I’m looking forward to it. Shaffer’s second-place finish was the best of his WoO campaign. Schatz, who won both WoOevents at Eldora in May, settled for third. “We’ll be a little better on Saturday for 10 laps more. The race track here can be tricky.” Kerry Madsen, the Jokers Wild winner last year, charged from 16th to fourth with Brent Marks completing the top five. Schatz Tops Knight Before The Kings Royal Donny Schatz passed Brian Brown on lap 10 and never looked back en route to winning the Knight Before the Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway. It was Schatz’ 275th career World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory. Greg Wilson charged from 14th to finish second, with Sheldon Haudenschild finishing third in the non-stop feature. Brown won the first Sears Craftsman Dash to earn the pole for the 30-lap feature, alongside Hunter Schuerenburg, who won the second dash. Brown, in search of his fifth career victory, set the pace out front of the field as Schuerenburg remained within striking distance. Schatz, who started third, recovered from his start and got by Tim Shaffer for third on lap five, but not without making heavy contact with the outside retaining wall in turn two. The contact didn’t faze Schatz as he began chasing Schuerenburg and Brown. On lap nine, Schatz ducked under Schuerenburg for second and one lap later, using the same line, Schatz took the lead from Brown. From there, Schatz began to work through lapped traffic in an attempt to extend his lead while all eyes were on Wilson. Wilson took third from Schuerenburg on lap 21 and surpassed Brown a lap later for the runner-up position. Wilson, glued to the extreme bottom of the racing surface, set his sights on Schatz. Haudenschild was in pursuit of Wilson running the polar opposite line, banging down the cushion. Haudenschild worked by Schuerenburg and Brown on lap 23 to move into third. Wilson closed slightly in traffic, but Schatz had built too much of an advantage and went on to his 14th victory of the season by 2.273 seconds. “It got real slick,” Schatz said. “I think my car was best in the middle and it’s not exactly my bag of tea to bounce off the cushion every lap. Greg [Wilson] is really good when the track gets like that. I know if I do everything right, there’s not many people that will pass this 15 car, but Greg is one of them. We’ve got to a get a little bit better tomorrow for 10 more laps or Greg will kick all our asses.” Wilson had high praise for Schatz following his season-best finish. “That 15 car man, he’s the best out here and the cleanest race car driver I have ever raced with,” Wilson said. Haudenschild was pleased with his third-place finish. “My crew has done a phenomenal job and I think we’ll be right there tomorrow. I can’t thank the fans for being great all weekend,” Haudenschild said. Brown fell to fourth at the checkered flag with Dave Blaney charging from 22nd to complete the top five. Donny Schatz Is Eldora King Again Donny Schatz took the lead on lap 15 and never looked back en route to winning the Kings Royal for the third consecutive season at Eldora Speedway. Schatz earned $50,000 for his 15th World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the season. Brad Sweet surged late and came within a half of a car length at the checkered flag, finishing 0.189 seconds behind Schatz. Cory Eliason, in his first career Kings Royal start, completed the podium. With the unique Kings Royal format, the six heat winners occupied the first three rows for the 40-lap feature. Trey Starks won heat six, earning the pole in his first Kings Royal start alongside heat five winner, Paul McMahan. A caution on the initial start involving Hunter Schuerenburg, Sheldon Haudenschild and Brock Zearfoss brought out the only stoppage of the event. The complete restart saw Starks shoot to the lead. Schatz and McMahan battled for second with Schatz taking the position on lap three and setting his sights on Starks. Schatz took a look under Starks on lap 14 and completed the pass for the lead one lap later. Eliason, who started sixth after winning heat one, established himself as a threat moving by Starks into second on lap 16. Eliason actually slid Schatz for position, but was never able to maintain momentum and stay in front of the Tony Stewart Racing No. 15. Sweet maneuvered into third on lap 17 and showed a lot of speed pounding the cushion. As Sweet closed in on Eliason for second, Donny Schatz extended his margin out front. Sweet would get by Eliason for second on lap 27 and begin cutting into Schatz’s sizable advantage. As Schatz searched for grip the last 10 laps, Sweet really closed in. Sweet got hung up behind Daryn Pittman in lapped traffic and finally cleared him with five to go, setting up one last charge at Schatz. On the absolute cushion of the racing surface, Sweet closed in on Schatz, setting up a hectic finish. Sweet cut the gap to five car-lengths down the backstretch on the final lap and ended up just half a car-length short from his second career Kings Royal triumph. Schatz acknowledged that he was searching for speed the last 10 laps, “I knew someone had to be coming. I was hanging the last 10 laps, I could not get stuck anywhere. I’m lucky it wasn’t 41 laps tonight, because obviously, the No.49 was coming there at the end,” Schatz said. “Lapped traffic was tough tonight, it was tricky and slick. I feel like I completely failed in Qualifying going 21st quick, but the way format works tonight it put us in the right position,” Schatz added. Brad Sweet was obviously disappointed but was pleased with the speed he showed. “I came up one lap short, some of those lapped cars didn’t cut me a break. Coming to the checkered, I was cussing because I wanted it to be the white flag,” Sweet said. “To be the best, you’ve got to beat the best and the way [Schatz] shows up at these big money events, is why he’ll down in history as one of, if not the best of all time. This NAPA racing team has nothing to be ashamed of tonight, I just wish it was one more lap tonight.” Eliason was extremely pleased with his third-place run, “That was a great learning experience. I got to follow and watch Donny and Brad tonight and they are the two best out here right now. There is a huge learning curve coming to these tracks and to go out and be competitive is awesome.” Lee Jacobs represented the Buckeye State coming from 16th to finish fourth with Kraig Kinser coming from 13th to complete the top five. Christopher Bell set quick time over the 51-car field and was running in the top five when he pulled pit side with 14 laps remaining. Larson Banks $25,000 During Lernerville Silver Cup
Kyle Larson dominated Lernerville Speedway en route to a $25,000 payday, winning the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup against a stacked World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series field. Larson started fourth, worked his way by Ian Madsen on lap nine and never looked back to win his first World of Outlaws feature of the year and the sixth of his career. He also set fast time over the 37-car field and won his heat race. Brad Sweet finished second after a late-race charge, while Donny Schatz came from ninth to complete the podium. Western Pennsylvania’s own Tim Shaffer won the Sears Craftsman Dash to earn the pole for the 40-lap feature. Shaffer, the 1993 Lernerville track champion and a two-time Silver Cup winner, led the opening four laps before Brandon Spithaler spun off the track, bringing out the only caution of the event. World of Outlaws rookie Ian Madsen took advantage of the double-file restart to take the lead from Shaffer down the backstretch. Madsen led lap five and Larson took second from Shaffer a lap later. Larson slid Madsen for the lead on the eighth round, but the Australian turned back underneath Larson’s No. 57 to lead into turn three. It was short-lived, however, as Larson pounded the cushion and blasted around Madsen to lead for good on lap nine. The Elk Grove, Calif., native then established he was the class of the field, quickly building up a lead as the field stretched out around the four-tenths-mile oval. Sweet, fresh off his runner-up finish at the Kings Royal, began making the top work late in the going. He moved by Shaffer for third on lap 26 and then used the same line to move by Madsen for second a lap later. Simultaneously, Schatz began making the bottom work, moving into third with 10 to go. As Larson diced through heavy traffic, Sweet began to close in on Larson as the large crowd at Lernerville Speedway watched closely to see if the driver referred to as ‘The Big Cat’ could make a move. However, Larson was flawless through traffic, re-extending his lead and going on to win by 1.893 seconds over his brother-in-law. “I was able to get through traffic pretty well,” noted Larson in victory lane. “There was a strip of moisture in turns three and four. I was trying to check the board because I knew if [Schatz] was coming, I was going to have to do some searching.” Larson was making his first start at Lernerville in five years, after coming from 24th to second in the 2013 Silver Cup. “I didn’t think we were that great in the dash, but Paul Silva was able to tune it up and I knew right away in the feature that I had a good shot of winning this one,” said Larson. “These Outlaw races are so hard to win. I was able to get an Outlaw win for Ricky [Stenhouse Jr.] last year, but it has been a couple years since I got an Outlaw win in the No. 57.” “It’s great to see a packed house. I was only able to get here five minutes before engine heat because of plane troubles, but I’m glad we made it,” stressed Larson. “We couldn’t be out here without all you fans,” Sweet settled for second and referenced how similar Tuesday night was to Saturday’s Kings Royal, where he was trying to chase down Schatz on the cushion. “You know [Larson] is going to be tough to beat out front, and I wasn’t making as much speed once the top in turns one and two went away,” Sweet pointed out. “I kind of saw Donny coming at the end so I moved down on the race track to defend second.” “The past few races, the tracks have been slick and technical with a lot of green flag laps … it’s been a lot of fun. We’ve been right in the hunt throughout this Month of Money and hopefully we can pick up some more wins here soon.” Schatz had won three of the last four races prior to Tuesday, but could do no better than third on this night. David Gravel came from 10th to finish fourth and Ian Madsen faded to fifth. Kasey Kahne made a last-lap pass in the Last Chance Showdown to make the feature and earned the KSE Hard Charger Award by coming up to 17th at the checkered flag. Carson Macedo To Pilot Johnson’s No. 41 At Knoxville Carson Macedo has been tabbed to continue the legacy of the late Jason Johnson and will pilot the No. 41 Jason Johnson Racing sprint car in both the 360 and 410 Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway. As part of that 10-day stretch of racing, the JJR “Dream Team” plans to race in the 28th Annual 360 Knoxville Nationals, Aug. 2-4; the seventh-annual Weld Racing Capitani Classic at Knoxville Raceway, Aug. 5; and the 58th annual 5-hour Energy Knoxville Nationals, Aug. 8-11. As part of the 410 Nationals, Macedo will also continue Johnson’s legacy by competing in the SPEED SPORT Challenge, held annually on the Friday of Nationals week and set this year for Aug. 10. The SPEED SPORT Challenge features numerous international sprint car stars competing against American talent that has competed overseas in the year leading up to the Knoxville Nationals. While the team’s plans for the balance of the season are still not clear-cut, the goal for the squad is to run select World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series shows, with Macedo behind the wheel as his race schedule and obligations allow. “Being able to give a talented driver an opportunity was the next part of Jason’s dream and vision for our race team,” said team owner Bobbi Johnson, Jason Johnson’s widow. “It was so important to Jason that we build a solid race team and operation so we could be car owners and give young drivers the same opportunity afforded to him throughout his career. “Jason was impressed with Carson, not only as a race car driver, but also as a person. We are so honored to have him drive for our JJR No. 41 team.” Macedo is a fourth-generation driver from Lemoore, Calif., who has experience driving both winged and non-winged sprint cars and midgets. He moved to Central Indiana to further refine and develop his career as a professional sprint car driver. The 22-year-old is currently leading the All Star Circuit of Champions point standings piloting the famed Joe Gaerte Racing No. 3G. He is also a former World of Outlaws winner, crossing the finish line first on the opening night of the Gold Cup Race of Champions in 2014 at Silver Dollar Speedway. His passion for racing started when he was five years old and Macedo continues to fuel his desire and dedication by matching his talents inside the car with his strong work ethic, integrity, enthusiasm for the sport and life, as well as his commitment to success on and off the track. “I am so thankful to be chosen for this opportunity,” said Macedo. “Jason Johnson was a hero in our sport. I always really looked up to what he was able to accomplish as an independent owner/driver, something not many have the determination to balance the responsibility of, but Jason did it flawlessly. Schatz Holds Off Larson In Brad Doty Classic Saldana, pounding the cushion, got a run on Schatz down the backstretch and threw a big slide job in turn three to take the second spot by a nose at the line when the caution waved for Reutzel. The restart saw Schatz and Saldana exchange slide jobs, once again allowing Marks to escape. Saldana wrestled the runner-up position away from Schatz on lap 17, as Kyle Larson made his presence known moving into the top five. As the caution flag waved for Brad Sweet on lap 21, heartbreak struck for race-long leader Brent Marks. Marks pulled pit side with a flat tire that was ailing his family owned No.19 machine for a handful of laps. Marks’ misfortune awarded Joey Saldana the lead and lane choice on the double-file restart with 19 laps remaining. Saldana elected the bottom, giving Schatz the top. Saldana slid up the track, attempting to halt Schatz’ momentum, but the nine-time series champion turned his Textron Off Road sponsored, Tony Stewart Racing No.15 underneath to lead down the backstretch on lap 22. Schatz led the lap with Saldana and Larson nose to tail at the line. Saldana tried another slider the following lap, but Schatz once again, cool and smooth, turned it back underneath to maintain the lead. Saldana made another attempt for the top spot but allowed Larson to sneak by for second in the process. Larson set his eyes on Schatz, following him on the cushion in turns three and four and going lower than him in turns one and two. While Larson was never farther than five car lengths back, he never truly threatened to take the lead from Schatz, who won by 1.273 seconds. “I won the Brad Doty Classic,” Schatz said. “I did not expect the track to stay that good throughout the race. Hats off to my entire Textron Off Road team, they work extremely hard and make this car a lot of fun to drive.” Larson praised Schatz for being the best at his craft. “Donny is so good around the bottom and the middle and he can still get up on the curb and rip it. He’s the best out here,” Larson said. “I was a little too patient, but it was a fun race and it’s awesome to race in front of such a great crowd.” Saldana, who just came back from the West Coast, was pleased to finish third. “To put it on the frontstretch with these guys is awesome,” Saldana said. “I can’t thank Kevin Rudeen enough for giving me a great race car to race against the best two drivers in the world. Hopefully, we can keep it going this weekend at Eldora.” Rico Abreu was strong all night, finishing fourth with Macedo fading to fifth at the line. It’s Freddie Rahmer In Gettysburg Clash Freddie Rahmer passed David Gravel on a double-file restart with nine laps remaining to win the Gettysburg Clash at Lincoln Speedway Thursday night. Rahmer and his father Fred, became the sixth father-son duo to win World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series features. Gravel and Daryn Pittman completed the podium. Last year’s Gettysburg Clash winner Gravel won the Sears Craftsman Dash to earn the pole for the 35-lap feature. Gravel got the jump on the start while Daryn Pittman got around front row starter Alan Krimes for second down the backstretch. Gravel reached lapped traffic on lap eight, allowing Pittman, Krimes and company to close in. Two laps later, James McFadden brought out the yellow flag, giving Gravel a clear track. On the restart, Krimes took second from Pittman, only to have Pittman power back to the runner-up position coming back to the line. Rahmer, who started sixth, worked by Krimes for third on lap 13 with a slider and set his sets on the lead duo. As Gravel and Pittman worked through heavy traffic, Rahmer closed in and moved by Pittman for second on lap 20. Danny Dietrich, a five-time Lincoln winner in 2018, worked his way into third by Pittman and began reeling in Rahmer and Gravel. In heavy lapped traffic, Dietrich threw a massive slider for second on Rahmer in turn three, but lost the handle and spun, leaving fourth-place running Brad Sweet nowhere to go. The caution also negated Gravel’s sizable lead. The double-file restart with nine laps remaining lined up Rahmer to the outside of Gravel. Rahmer used a brilliant run, glued to the middle, to take the lead down the backstretch, sending the Pennsylvania fans into a frenzy anticipating a hometown win. Rahmer extended the lead and was just reaching the back of the field as he took the checkered for the first time as a World of Outlaws winner and sent Lincoln Speedway into pandemonium. “We work so hard for this, I knew if we got into position, we could win one of these races,” Rahmer said. “I didn’t know if they were close the last two laps, but we got it done.” Freddie and Fred Rahmer joined racing royalty as just the sixth father-son duo to win World of Outlaws features, joining the Kinser, Swindell, Haudenschild, Smith and Kaeding families. “Of all the things that have happened in racing, this is the coolest,” said National Sprint Car Hall of Famer member Fred Rahmer, who is the all-time leading feature winner at Lincoln Speedway. “It took me a lot damn longer to win one of these races than him.” Gravel was understandably disappointed after leading 26 laps to come home second. “I didn’t need that yellow, but that’s racing,” Gravel said. “It’s a tough one to swallow, you lead that many laps, you want to win.” Daryn Pittman completed the podium after a torrid battle with Donny Schatz for third. “Congrats to Fred and Freddie, what an amazing performance from them,” Pittman said. “We were really good in the beginning, but kind of faded at the end. The last few laps with Donny were excellent, he ran me clean as always. This is a good run for this whole team and we’ll see what we have at The Grove.” Schatz came from 11th to finish fourth with Lucas Wolfe completing the top five. Dewease Tracks Down Schatz At The Grove Lance Dewease got better with each restart and passed Donny Schatz on lap 20 to win his 91st career feature at Williams Grove Speedway Friday night. It was his 14th World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series triumph. Schatz settled for second with Brian Montieth completing the podium. Lucas Wolfe won the Sears Craftsman Dash, earning the pole for the 25-Lap feature, but it was fellow front row starter Schatz who got the jump on the initial start to lead the opening lap. Ian Madsen brought out the first caution of the evening on lap three. Dewease, who started fourth, used the restart to move into second by Wolfe. Greg Hodnett moved by Wolfe into third a lap later. Dewease closed in on Schatz as the duo established themselves as the class of the field. Schatz negotiated lapped traffic with ease, before a caution for Sheldon Haudenschild on lap 16 bunched the field together. Schatz cleared Dewease on the following double-file restart, but a caution for Jim Siegel set up a single-file restart. Dewease took a look underneath Schatz for the top spot, but couldn’t make it stick. A lap later Jacob Allen went up in smoke, setting up another double-file restart. Once again, Schatz kept Dewease at bay on the restart. One lap later, Trey Starks was backwards, setting up the final restart with seven laps remaining. This time, Dewease stayed right Schatz. Dewease followed Schatz on the top for a lap before making his move with a slide job in turn one to lead down the backstretch to the delight of the large Williams Grove Speedway crowd. Dewease won by 1.201 seconds to become the winningest driver in Williams Grove history. “It just feels great to be in victory lane and to beat Donny Schatz, he’s one of the best racers to ever drive these cars and he races you as clean as anybody. I hope my pass on him was as clean as he races all of us,” Dewease said, deflecting the attention away from his record-breaking win at the facility. Dewease acknowledged his great car owners and teams that have helped him to get to this point in his career, including his current team which is assembled with 3 Hall of Famers – himself, car owner Don Kreitz Jr. and crew chief Davey Brown. “Every start I got a little better off of four and I finally got a big run at him,” Dewease said. “For all of you fans that come out and support us every week, this is for you.” “If you come around here and race with Lance for the win, you’re doing something right. No excuses, he beat us,” Schatz said. “You do the best you can and tonight was second. It was still a good night for us.” Brian Montieth finished third and was in good spirits, “We got going a little better at the end, my guys gave me a great car. Justin Peck Suspended After Failing DIRTcar Drug Test Sprint car driver Justin Peck has been suspended by DIRTcar following a failed drug test. Peck was found to be in violation of the World of Outlaws Substance Abuse Policy after a random test on July 12 prior to a World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series event at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. According to a penalty notice posted on the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series website, Peck tested positive for marijuana metabolite. Peck has been suspended for 90 days from the date of the test and also fined $1,000. He may reduce that suspension to 60 days with the completion of an alcohol or drug-education program. Peck must pass two drug tests over the final 14 days of his suspension as well as pay his fine in order to be reinstated. He has the right to appeal the penalty. Peck is the fifth driver to be suspended as part of DIRTcar’s Substance Abuse Policy, which was introduced in 2017. Prior to Peck, Scott Bloomquist was the most recent driver to be suspended after he skipped a drug test during Firecracker 100 weekend at Lernerville Speedway in Sarver, Pa. Gravel Grinds It Out At Ransomville David Gravel fought off multiple charges from Brad Sweet to lead all 30 laps and claim his fifth victory of the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series season Friday night at Ransomville Speedway. Sweet took the lead on two occasions but settled for second for the second consecutive year at Ransomville. Polesitter Donny Schatz completed the podium. Schatz won the Sears Craftsman Dash, earning the pole for the 30-lap feature in search of his 16th victory of the year. Action was halted on the opening lap after Paulie Colagiovanni went for a wild ride up and over the turn three and four wall. Colagiovanni was uninjured. Gravel powered around Schatz to pace the field down the backstretch and lead the opening lap. Brad Sweet went around Schatz to take second on lap three. Another red flag halted action as Daryn Pittman got upside down battling for position inside the top 10 on lap four. A long stretch of green flag laps allowed Gravel and Sweet to reach lapped traffic. The duo sliced and diced through slower cars littered around the three-eighths-mile oval. Sweet cleared Gravel with a slide job on lap 10, but Gravel turned back underneath to edge Sweet at the line. As the duo continued to navigate traffic, Sweet edged in front of Gravel once again down the backstretch on lap 17, but once again Gravel willed his CJB Motorsports No. 5 back in front at the stripe. One lap later the final caution of the night flew for an ailing Dan Bennett, taking the leaders out of traffic with 12 laps remaining. Gravel motored away with a clear track in front of him. Gravel would be forced to clear a pair of lapped cars running side-by-side and he did so with relative ease, axing any chance of late race heroics from Sweet. “I was being a little cautious, I blew a tire here last year and I didn’t want to do that again this year. When Brad showed his nose, I knew I had to step up my game and luckily, I was able to get back by him,” Gravel said. “We’ve been fast here the past couple of weeks, it’s good to get another win. This is our first win in a CJB house car, Barry [Jackson] has put a lot of hours in to make these things go fast.” Sweet settled for second and complimented Gravel. “David did a nice job getting through traffic, especially with the lapped cars battling side-by-side. I think we were pretty equal with him, my guys gave me a great car,” Sweet said. After starting on the pole, Schatz was disappointed to fade to third, but made no excuses. “We weren’t good enough to compete for the win, you lick your wounds some days and come back stronger,” Schatz said. Kraig Kinser had a season-best fourth place finish with Logan Schuchart completing the top five. Dave DePietro won the sportsman feature. Moran Masters The Prairie Dirt Classic Devin Moran passed defending World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series champion Brandon Sheppard with 21 laps left and pulled away to a $30,000 payday in the 29th annual Prairie Dirt Classic presented by Bank of Pontiac Saturday at Fairbury American Legion Speedway. “Once we moved up to the top, I really found something there and the car was just so phenomenal,” said Moran. “It’s incredible what we can do with such a little team that we have. Everyone on this team have come together and to be able to do what we’re doing is so unbelievable. “It’s by far the biggest one, this tops them all. It’s just incredible what we’ve done, and I can’t God enough for blessing us with the capabilities to come out here and race let alone win.” Chris Simpson and Sheppard would bring the star-studded 29-car field to the green flag to begin the century grind. Simpson would race out to the lead early while the rest of the field settled in behind him. After following Simpson around the fast quarter-mile, Sheppard made his move to take over the top spot and he brought Chris Madden, who started fifth and Moran, who started third, with him. The trio would then pull away from the rest of the pack with Moran getting by Madden for second. On lap 42, Moran took the lead for the first time and ked the field to the halfway point. Madden would slip past Sheppard for second and began to challenge Moran for the race lead. Sheppard would regain the runner-up spot and quickly caught Moran who was mired in traffic. On what would be the final restart after a caution, coming on lap 69, Sheppard immediately began pressuring the race leader. On lap 72, Sheppard would steal the lead away only to lose it a lap later. Sheppard tried one more time on lap 78 and again was scored as the leader only to again lose it right back the very next lap to Moran for what turned out to be the final time. Moran would put plenty of real estate and lapped traffic between himself and Sheppard to seal the victory, the biggest of his career. “Man, I got nervous there on that last restart. Every time we restarted, that top just kept getting faster and faster,” said Moran. “I could tell why once we moved up there and it was way better for us. (Crew Chief and brother) Wylie (Moran) just kept pulling the sticks apart so I just kept running up high and it worked out for us. “This is so cool. We just kept fine tuning little things all weekend long and it was just really good. When we can do that, I’m happy.” Current points leader, Mike Marlar, who started 15th, passed Sheppard with two laps to go to claim the runner-up position. “We had a really good race car and it was a really good race track tonight. It was so congested early, but once it cleared out, I was able to get to the front,” said the 40-year-old driver. “Also, congratulations to Devin (Moran) and his team. He’s been doing an awesome job and I’m real proud of him. If we would’ve had a caution there we might’ve had a shot. But, we had to really work to get by Brandon (Sheppard) for second, so we’ll take it and we know we did the best we can.” Rounding out the podium was Sheppard, who led on four different occasions for 25 total laps before finishing in third. “We were really good the whole race, but Devin (Moran) was just a little bit better tonight. I got a little bit free when we got to the lapped traffic and that’s where we needed to be a bit better,” said Sheppard. “It’s typical Fairbury though. There’s three grooves of racing and when you get to them. They’re all over the place and they’re fighting for position too. We’re thankful to be in the top three though.” Madden would finish in the fourth position ahead of Billy Drake who completed the top five with an Outlaws career high finish of a fifth. Marks Is Up To Weedsport Challenge For most of the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series competitors, Sunday night’s 35-lap Empire State Challenge at the Weedsport Speedway was just that, a challenge. The track rolled out black and slick and many struggled, though winner Brent Marks, who led flag to flag, thought it was just fine. “That was a lot of fun!” declared Marks. “I knew I needed to get out front and run my own race. We’d had a good car all night and I wanted to take advantage of that and prove that our first win wasn’t a fluke. This proves that we belong out here with the Outlaws and feels just as good as our first one earlier in the year.” Marks’ win came at the expense of fourth-starting Sheldon Haudenschild, who chased Marks’ front row companion, Jacob Allen, for 23 laps before getting around him, seriously limiting the time he had to work on Marks for the lead. They hit the stripe in that order, with Brad Sweet and David Gravel rounding out the top five. Donny Schatz, who blasted the first-turn wall on his time-trial warmup lap, led the second five, which included 360 star Chuck Hebing, Ian Madsen, Tim Shaffer and Logan Schuchart. That Hebing ran second in his heat to make the field for the dash, then seventh in the A-main with his 360 engine shows just how difficult it was for the 410s to get a hold of the track. Allen challenged fellow Pennsylvanian Marks for the lead early on, then dropped back a few lengths. But when Marks caught the tail enders on lap six, he turned up the wick and was on the leader’s bumper as they lapped cars by the handful, squeezing between the lapped cars and the frontstretch wall with a strong run off the turn-four banking. At halfway, Haudenschild was closing on Allen and through the early 20’s kept driving alongside him in the high groove before finally prevailing. A lap later, he dove under Marks as they hit turn three and got even for a moment, but that was as close as he’d get. “I didn’t have him until I had him,” reflected Haudenschild. “I was all the way down in the infield but I didn’t quite make it. Second’s all right but it’s not a win!” With Marks aware that Haudenschild was as fast as he was, he kept up a wicked pace through the lapped cars, zigzagging his way through them flat out until the checkers flew. “I tried to use up as much track as I could,” said Marks. “The track was really slick, with just a little moisture around the top there, so I ran there when I could and got right back up there whenever I had to go low to clear the lapped cars.” Looking back, Allen tipped that he “was babying it until Sheldon went by. He showed me how to run a little harder there and nobody else got a run on me. You always want to win but I’m pretty happy with third.” For Allen, the finish capped a night when he timed third, won his heat and ran second to Marks in the Craftsman Dash, a good night in anyone’s book. Dave Marcucilli closed out Weedsport’s Hall of Fame weekend with a solid win over Saturday night winner Kevin Root in the Sportsman Shootout. Parker Price-Miller Lands Knoxville Nationals Ride After parting ways with Destiny Motorsports over the weekend, Parker Price-Miller has been busy pounding the pavement to secure opportunities for the remainder of the season. His first hurdle was cleared Wednesday morning after landing a ride with Bernie Stuebgen and Indy Race Parts behind the wheel of the No. 71p for both the 58th running of the Capitani Classic and the 58th annual Knoxville Nationals. “I am fortunate to know some great people in this sport, and am looking forward to working with Bernie and everyone at the Nationals,” Price-Miller said. “I have worked with him before doing some midget stuff, and I am really excited to get started this weekend.” Price-Miller comes into the Knoxville Nationals sitting seventh in All Star Circuit of Champions points, with 11 top-five and 30 top-10 finishes this season. In recent competition at Knoxville Raceway on Saturday night with the All Stars, the Kokomo, Ind., driver finished 15th in the feature amid a stellar 56-car field “The Nationals is tough to begin with, so obviously coming into this race with a new mechanic and team makes it a little bit more tough, but Bernie has a great track record and has done some great things at Knoxville with a variety of drivers,” Price-Miller added. “I am fortunate to team up with him for sure.” Sunday night, Price-Miller will pilot the Indy Race Parts/Chalk Stix No. 71p at the Capitani Classic, and will then take his shot at qualifying for the Nationals next Thursday night. Rico Abreu Does It Again In Ironman Rico Abreu took the lead from Kraig Kinser on lap 21 and held off Tim Shaffer and David Gravel to win his first World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series feature of the season Friday night at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55. Abreu survived two Gravel slide jobs in the closing laps and held off the Connecticut driver for his second consecutive Ironman 55 triumph for a $20,000 payday. Jacob Allen completed the podium. Abreu won the Sears Craftsman Dash to earn the pole for the 55-lap feature, alongside Outlaw veteran Kraig Kinser. Kinser got the jump on the initial start and powered away in search of his first victory of the season. Kinser reached lapped traffic on lap five on the high-banked quarter-mile and negotiated it well, establishing an early lead. Kinser turned under an Abreu slide job on lap 17 to maintain the race lead. Abreu cleared Kinser to take the lead two laps later, but a caution for a slowing Joe B. Miller negated the pass and allowed Kinser to maintain the lead with 36 laps remaining. The restart saw Kinser and Abreu exchange slide jobs for the lead with Kinser holding the lead on lap 20, but Abreu wrestling it away the following circuit. Brent Marks brought out the caution on lap 27 with a flat right rear, setting up the first of many double-file restarts where Abreu would be in control. Each time, Abreu elected the bottom. Tim Shaffer, who originally started 12th, charged from fourth on the restart to second and took a look under Abreu for the lead with a brilliant restart, but settled for second as Abreu powered away. The action was halted for Hunter Schuerenburg, who got upside in turn two, on lap 33. Schuerenburg was uninjured but was done for the event. Turn two proved treacherous for both Paul Nienhiser and Sheldon Haudenschild as well, as both drivers ended the evening on the hook after contact with the wall. Haudenschild’s incident was on lap 42, which set up a 13-lap dash to the finish for $20,000. Abreu powered away on the restart in clean air but would need to navigate lapped traffic one more time to secure the victory. With five laps remaining, Abreu approached lapped traffic, allowing Gravel to close in. Gravel attempted slide jobs on lap 50 and 51, but Abreu stayed in the gas and powered around the CJB Motorsports No.5 to maintain the lead. Abreu’s margin of victory was .655 seconds, as he claimed the Ironman 55 trophy for the second consecutive time. “Man, that was a lot of fun. Hats off to my guys, that was the best I’ve felt in a long time. It’s all about working together and getting chemistry,” Abreu said. “Back-to-back Ironman wins is awesome, but we’re not done yet, we’ve got another one tonight.” Abreu applauded David Gravel for racing him clean at the end, “If the roles were reversed, it would be the same way.” Being so close to victory, Gravel was understandably disappointed to come up short. “I really thought I had him cleared and he got back by me,” Gravel said. “I’m a little mad at myself for not winning this, it sucks to finish second. But I am really happy for Drew [Warner] for him to get his first career Outlaw victory and for Rico.” Drew Warner is the crew chief for Rico and is the son of Ricky Warner, the longtime wrench for Donny Schatz. Allen continues to chip away in search of his first career Outlaw victory and came home with another podium finish. “This is a great race track and I think most drivers would agree it’s a lot of fun. Congrats to Rico and David, it was a good race for 55 laps,” Allen said. Allen’s Shark Racing teammate finished fourth with Tim Shaffer coming home fifth. $50,000 USA Nationals To Brandon Sheppard Reigning World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series champion Brandon Sheppard earned his biggest victory of the season Saturday night, topping the $50,000-to-win USA Nationals at Cedar Lake Speedway. Sheppard took the lead from Jimmy Owens on lap 23 and led the remainder of the 100-lap event on the three-eighths-mile track to grab his 11th victory of the season and the 35th of his career. “This is definitely one of my top ones for sure,” Sheppard said. “We’ve been coming here for a lot of years trying to win this race. We’ve had a really good car a lot of times, but just fell short. To win it, this means the world to me. Mark Richards and Steve Baker have given me this opportunity to come drive this car and it’s just a dream to drive.” Devin Moran started on the pole. Flanked by 2014 event winner, Jimmy Owens, they would bring the stellar 28-car field to the green flag to begin the century grind. Owens would dart out ahead of Moran and the rest of the field while they positioned themselves behind the two leaders. Sheppard, who started behind Moran in third, slipped past the polesitter and quickly placed himself within striking distance of Owens. As the leaders approached traffic, Sheppard went up to the top side and began building his momentum, riding the cushion around until he moved past Owens on lap 23 to take over the lead he would never relinquish. Brian Shirley, who recently won his second DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour Championship, had caught the two leaders and went by Owens right after Sheppard did and immediately began challenging Sheppard for the top spot. With the lap continuing to click off, Owens, who never fell off the podium the entire race, went back after Shirley and made the pass for second with 17 laps to go and reset his sights on Sheppard. Like Shirley, Owens tried several times to get past the race leader but would soon fall back into the clutches of Shirley who took back the runner-up spot with only three laps to go. Sheppard maintained the top spot throughout and, in the end, would cross under the checkered flags first to score the $50,000 payday. “The job is getting done with Rocket XR1’s being in the top three tonight. It’s awesome man, this is huge.” Sheppard continued. “Hopefully we can carry this on the rest of the year, we’ve had a really fast car all year long, we just had a lot of bad luck early on this season. Everything was just really good this weekend, even with the bad luck in one of the Heat Races last night. Maybe that was our bad luck for the weekend.” Shirley finished second. “We just didn’t get a good restart and Jimmy (Owens) got back on the outside, but we were able to battle back and had a good car. Just can’t thank everybody behind us enough,” Shirley said. “This XR1 Rocket ran great and our Durham Racing Engine ran really well. Overall, just happy to get second in this one. We’ve been pretty fortunate that everybody at the blue rig has really taken care of us. Bob & Lisa Cullen give me the best equipment money can buy and we just try and utilize it the best that we can and continue to have fun doing this.” Owens finished third. “We had a good car the whole race, but I was a little laid over on the right rear more than I wanted to be,” Owens said. “We had the lead there and was setting a comfortable pace where I felt like I could run without messing things up. Well Brandon (Sheppard) and Brian (Shirley) got passed me and I thought I’m just going to sit here and bide my time and be cautious and things will fall my way and sure enough they did. We had a good hot rod at the end, but just not enough to get it done.” Rocket XR1 Chassis and Durham Racing Engines swept the podium finishers as Chase Junghans, also in a Rocket XR1, was impressive in finishing fourth while three-time DIRTcar Summer Nationals Hell Tour Champion, Bobby Pierce advanced 15 spots after starting 20th and having to transfer through one of the Last Chance Showdowns, to finish fifth. Schuchart Banks $20,000 Ironman Prize
Logan Schuchart passed Daryn Pittman on lap 15 and never looked back to claim the Ironman 55 at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55, worth $20,000. The final 42 laps went non-stop as Schuchart negotiated lapped traffic to claim his first World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the season. Kasey Kahne Racing teammates Brad Sweet and Daryn Pittman completed the podium. Schuchart won the Sears Craftsman Dash, earning the pole for the 55-Lap feature alongside Pittman. Pittman, who won at Pevely in April, got the jump on the initial start to lead the opening circuit. Pittman reached lapped traffic by lap five around the tight-quartered bullring with Schuchart close in tow. Schuchart pulled even with the 2013 WoO champion on lap nine, but couldn’t make the pass. Pittman and Schuchart were side-by-side for the better part of the next four laps before the lone caution of the event flew with 13 complete for Aaron Reutzel. Pittman maintained control on the restart, but Schuchart remained persistent and took command of the field on lap 15 through turn two. Pittman tried to get back by the No.1S, but ended up losing second to his teammate Brad Sweet in the process. Following Reutzel’s caution, the remaining 42 laps went non-stop as the Ironman 55 lived up to its name as the most grueling event on the World of Outlaws schedule. Schuchart navigated lapped traffic like a veteran. As rubber began to set in around the I-55 Raceway in the closing laps, Schuchart made the decision to follow lapped traffic and force Sweet and Pittman to find a way around him. “I tried to hold my line as the rubber set in and force someone to go around me,” Schuchart said in reference to the closing laps. Sweet and Pittman closed in on Schuchart, but could do nothing but watch the Shark Racing No.1S capture his first win of the season. “Man, this is awesome. I feel like we have the best team we’ve ever had. This is Drydene Performance’s first Outlaw win and we can’t thank them enough for their support,” an exhausted, but elated, Schuchart said. “This is one of the big ones – Ironman 55. It’s tough, it wears you out. It’s awesome to get one of these wins and a big one at that,” Schuchart added. Sweet settled for second but was pleased with his car speed. “I was biding my time, waiting to see if he was going to make a mistake and he never gave us a real good shot to get by him, he set a really good pace up top,” Sweet said. Pittman led early and finished on the podium with his KKR teammate. “My car was getting better as the race went on, I’m a little frustrated with myself,” Pittman said. “I wasn’t quite quick enough on top on that restart and then I broke my momentum and Brad got by me. I’m really happy with our car right now, we’ll take third and go to Knoxville and try and improve there.” James McFadden came from 11th to finish fourth with Schuchart’s teammate Jacob Allen completing the top five. Hodnett Wins, Larson Leads Points There was plenty of action during Wednesday night’s preliminary feature that opened the 58th annual 5-hour Energy Knoxville Nationals, but not much of it was at the front of the field as Greg Hodnett led all 25 laps of historic Knoxville Raceway. Driving the familiar Heffner No. 27, the Central Pennsylvania regular grabbed the lead from polesitter Brock Zearfoss on the opening lap and was up to the task on three-single file restarts, holding back 2010 Knoxville Nationals winner Tim Shaffer’s last-lap charge for his second career victory at the half-mile track. “I had no idea, I was holding on for dear life and trying not to make any mistakes,” Hodnett said. “I didn’t know anybody was there, I was just driving the wheels off of it.” Hodnett, who in recent years has only raced at Knoxville during the Nationals, said the track fits his driving style. “I really like Knoxville. I like the way it races,” said Hodnett, who was runner-up in the Knoxville Nationals in 1997. “You can drive pretty straight and drive pretty hard. It lends itself to my driving style. I always felt comfortable here and I love the atmosphere. It gets me, I won’t say excited, but up in the seat.” Hodnett knew he didn’t want to leave the bottom lane on restarts. “I don’t have enough experience leading a race here, I don’t think I ever had the lead on a restart here,” he said. “I didn’t want to leave the bottom open. Whoever leaves the bottom open is usually getting passed. I was in block mode on the restart and hoped nobody would drive by on the outside before I got back to the top.” Shaffer started fourth and came home second. “We got closer and I thought we had a shot, but Greg wasn’t making a mistake and that’s what it takes to win,” Shaffer said. Kyle Larson raced from sixth to finish third and was the high-point driver for the night, essentially locking him into Saturday night’s main event. Larson’s night was a success despite being the last of 42 qualifiers to hit the track. “Paul (Silva, crew chief) and I were both a little stressed out in the pit area,” said Larson about his draw. “I was able to run a decent second lap, but I hit the bottom real nice on the second lap and was able to be 10th quick. The heat race was important too, and once it got single file I was able to move us forward and get some points, and the same thing in the feature.” Nationals rookie Gio Scelzi, who will likely become the youngest driver to ever start the Knoxville Nationals feature on Saturday night, finished fourth. Scelzi is 16. Ten-time Nationals winner Donny Schatz, who failed to qualify through his heat race, romped from 21st to finish fifth in the feature. He was second high-point man on the night, racking up 474 markers. Logan Schuchart was the fast qualifier on the night, but was disqualified after winning the B main when he failed to present his car to the scales before returning to his pit area. Schatz inherited the B main victory. Aaron Reutzel and Kerry Madsen tied for third in points with 473, while Shaffer picked up 471 and Scelzi earned 468 markers. Hodnett ended with 462 points. Gravel & CJB Seeking Knoxville Nationals Redemption Few things hurt worse in sprint car racing than seeing a shot at a 5-Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals victory slip through one’s fingertips, something David Gravel experienced firsthand one year ago. Gravel came into Saturday’s championship A-main with all the momentum in the world, earning a perfect score of 500 points on his qualifying night by setting fast time, winning his heat race and dominating the 25-lap preliminary feature. He sat on the pole for the $150,000-to-win grand finale and jetted out to a dominating lead early on. In fact, the Watertown, Conn., driver led the first 22 circuits of the 50-lap feature virtually uncontested. However, working lap 23, everything came to a grinding halt. A freak part failure just before the halfway break saw Gravel’s motor go south and the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series regular coast to a stop, sucking the air out of Knoxville Raceway and leaving the assembled crowd – not to mention Gravel, himself – heartbroken over the prospect of a first-time Nationals winner that didn’t come to fruition. This time, however, Gravel and company are back for more and they know that if they play their cards right, the No. 5 Mainstream Holdings/GoMuddy.com entry will have another shot at dethroning perennial Outlaws champion and defending Nationals winner Donny Schatz. “We certainly felt like we left something on the table last year,” noted Gravel. “We had a really fast car and just had a freak part failure. It wasn’t anyone’s fault at all. It does stay with you, though. You don’t forget the ones that get away like that.” In regards to his issue from last August, Gravel said there was little warning before things literally came apart. “I started to hear something coming apart in the engine going down the back stretch,” recalled Gravel. “By the time I reached (turns) three and four, I knew we were done. It’s still disappointing, no doubt. I really would have liked to have seen how that night would have played out. I felt like we were very fast. The car was pretty much driving itself right before we had our issue.” However, ever since their heartbreaking loss in 2017, Gravel has stayed confident in the speed that he and his CJB team have shown. They ended last season with a career-high 18 World of Outlaws victories and already have five wins this year, including one at Knoxville. “We certainly showed some speed (last year),” said Gravel. “I think if everything stays the same as it was, we should be able to be very competitive again. We’re looking forward to that. We’re proud of how we ran all week last year, but we want to push that bar even higher this year.” Even while looking forward, though, the sting of last year’s near-miss hasn’t gone away. “(Losing last year’s Nationals) has stayed with us all year long,” Gravel said. “We are bringing back a good piece and want to complete this thing.
