Clyde Knipp Pulling Off World Of Outlaws Tour Clyde Knipp confirmed Friday afternoon that he and his family-owned No. 13 team will be pulling off the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series for the remainder of the season. Knipp made the original announcement via a video on his Facebook page. “As many of you know, I’ve competed full-time with the World of Outlaws over the past two and a half years,” noted Knipp at the start of the video. “Unfortunately, myself and the team have made the tough decision to pull off the tour for the rest of 2018.” The 20-year-old joined the Outlaws full-time just after his 18th birthday in May of 2016, finishing 14th in points during his rookie year and ending up 15th in the final standings at the end of last year. He scored his first Outlaws top-10 finish at North Dakota’s Red River Valley Speedway last August, rising from 12th to finish ninth in the 30-lap feature, and also brought T-Rex Tape onboard as a primary sponsor ahead of this season. The team looked primed to take the next step forward in its development with the Outlaws, but that path will now have to detour for the time being, primarily due to a lack of funding. “The season started off pretty promising, with adding T-Rex Tape on a short-term deal for the season, but their other marketing dollars were tied up in other projects despite some discussions with them about continuing further,” explained Knipp. “That has left our team unfunded for the remainder of the season. The constant rainouts that the series has endured this season were also a factor in our decision.” Through 29 races this season, Knipp was 16th in points and his best finish was a 16th-place effort in front of his home state fans at Missouri’s Lake Ozark Speedway on May 4. Despite the setback, Knipp did confirm that he still plans to be in a race car this season. He also left the door open in regard to running select Outlaw events later in the year as well. “I’m not done racing; I don’t want anyone to think that,” Knipp affirmed. “I’m looking at running locally in Missouri through the summer and hope to possibly race at some of the bigger Outlaw shows later in the year as well. I’m even open to other driving opportunities outside of our team. It may not be a full-time gig for the rest of the year, but I still look forward to getting back to the race track soon.” Knipp became the youngest driver on tour when he graduated high school two years ago and continued in that capacity through this season. Its an opportunity he stressed he’ll always be grateful for, no matter what’s ahead for his racing career. “I’m very thankful for the chance I was given over the past two and a half seasons to race against the best sprint car drivers in the country, as well as for the experiences I gained along the way,” said Knipp. “I wish all my fellow World of Outlaws competitors the best of luck for the rest of the season and invite all my supporters to stay tuned for the next chapter in our journey.” Source: speedsport.com/sprints-midgets/world-of-outlaws-sprint-cars/knipp-leaving-world-outlaws-tour/

Pittman Holds On At Beaver Dam
Daryn Pittman won his fifth World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series feature of the season Saturday night at Beaver Dam Raceway. Pittman led the first 15 laps, but gave way to Jason Johnson, who led laps 16 and 17. However, the pair tangled while battling for the lead on lap 18. As a result, Johnson was involved in a violent crash and was transported to Aurora Summit Hospital in Summit, Wis. Pittman inherited the lead and led the remainder of the 40-lap event. It was Pittman’s fourth career win at the facility, but first since 2007. Shane Stewart and Brad Sweet completed the podium, with Jacob Allen and Donny Schatz rounding out the top five. Dominant Madden Rules Firecracker 100 Chris Madden marched to his first Firecracker 100 victory Saturday at Lernerville Speedway by leading flag-to-flag en route to a $30,000 payday. If you just kept your eyes on Madden during the 100-lap event, it might have looked like he was on a Sunday afternoon cruise to the grocery store. The Barry Wright Race Cars No. 44 had no serious challenge for the top spot and at one point held a more than six-second lead. Despite six cautions which erased Madden’s strong lead, the Gray Court, S.C., driver was able to quickly pull away. “When we started tonight, I think we did a little bit of a different combination there and when we fired up, I was able to run the middle of the race track like I was and as long as nothing happened, I knew we were going to be the car to beat,” said Madden, who started on the pole. Madden’s victory placed the perfect bookend on his 12th annual Firecracker 100 experience. On Thursday, Madden won a 30-lap $6,000-to-win preliminary event. On Friday, he finished third in the 30-lap feature. “We are having a good year,” said car owner Barry Wright. “We could have been better with a break or two but Chris is doing an excellent job. My son Lance, Will and AJ, they do great work. I’ve tried this a few times up here and finally made it. It feels so good.” The battle behind Madden was anything but a leisurely stroll. Young guns, Tyler Erb and Devin Moran were elbows-up the entire race as they exchanged the second and third positions multiple times throughout the event. With only nine laps remaining in the 100-lap event, Mike Marlar inserted himself into the equation by passing Erb for second. For the majority of the race, Marlar was running door-to-door with Shane Clanton for sixth but broke away from that battle just in time to make a run for the podium. “We definitely made lemonade out of lemons there,” said Marlar. “We couldn’t get a break all night really in the feature. I would get started on the bottom there and it would get kind of breezy and as soon as I would get out of the bottom and pass those cars for positions, there would be another caution. I finally got some green flag there at the end and started to come on. Congratulations to Chris. He had a really good weekend and Barry and those guys are doing an awesome job. They’re awesome competitors.” Headed into the weekend event Madden and Marlar were separated by only two points in the Series standings. With three more strong podium finishes for Madden and two top-five performances for Marlar, the pair now sits 16 points apart. Erb settled for third which is his best finish of the 2018 season so far and his single top-five performance. “It was a really really good run,” said Erb. “It was our first top-five of the year, I think. Just everything that could have, broke; and a lot of driver mistakes. I’m super happy. I love this place and the track was in good shape. So, I’m looking forward to next year… The car has been really good for the past two or three weeks, I just haven’t had much to show for it.” The finish:Sears Craftsman Feature (100 Laps): 1. 44-Chris Madden [1][$30,000]; 2. 157-Mike Marlar [5][$15,000]; 3. 91-Tyler Erb [8][$7,000]; 4. 9-Devin Moran [3][$6,000]; 5. 17M-Dale McDowell [7][$5,000]; 6. 1-Brandon Sheppard [2][$4,000]; 7. 25-Shane Clanton [17][$3,000]; 8. 14m-Morgan Bagley [15][$2,500]; 9. 14-Darrell Lanigan [4][$2,250]; 10. 72n-Mike Norris [11][$2,000]; 11. 7-Rick Eckert [14][$1,900]; 12. 22s-Gregg Satterlee [6][$1,800]; 13. Schatz Grabs No. 12 At Knoxville Raceway Even in June, Donny Schatz reigns supreme at Knoxville Raceway. The 10-time Knoxville Nationals winner led all 25 on the opening night of the Brownells Big Guns Bash to score his 12th World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the year. Ian Madsen and David Gravel completed the podium. Schatz won the Sears Craftsman Dash, earning the pole for the 25-lap feature alongside Knoxville regular Lynton Jeffrey. Schatz took command at the drop of the green flag, but Jeffrey stayed right with the nine-time series champion until the first caution of the evening flew for Jordyn Brazier with three laps complete. Brian Brown, who has won six features at Knoxville this season, also headed to the work area with damage after heavy contact with the outside retaining wall. On the e double-file restart, Schatz and Jeffrey made contact on the frontstretch with the latter going for a wild series of flips. Jeffrey emerged unscathed after the wild. Schatz continued to lead on the restart with Brooke Tatnell assuming the runner-up position. With momentum on the bottom, Schuchart took second from Tatnell on lap 10. Brothers Ian and Kerry Madsen waged war for multiple laps behind them for the fourth position before younger brother Ian solidified himself in the position. Ian wasn’t done there as he reeled in both Tatnell and Schuchart to take second with five laps remaining. But there was no catching Schatz , as he was never truly challenged after the lap-three restart going on to win by 3.809 seconds. The first thing Schatz did in victory lane was get on the wing and throw up the 41 in honor of Jason Johnson, who died from injuries suffered in an accident last Saturday at Beaver Dam Raceway. “It’s been a very shocking week. I’m glad to be standing here tonight, words can’t describe it,” an emotional Schatz said. “My guys are incredible, I am blessed to be able to drive this thing. It’s great to win at Knoxville.” Two-time Knoxville Raceway champion and the leading contender for Kevin Gobrecht Rookie of the Year Ian Madsen matched his season-best effort with his second-place finish. “I had a great race car. I took a little while to get going, but [Kyle] Ripper and the guys gave me a fun car to drive tonight. It’s awesome to come back to Knoxville and have a solid showing and put the car up front,” Madsen said. Gravel charged from 11th to complete the all World of Outlaws podium and was pleased with his end to the evening. “We missed it a little bit in qualifying, but after that, we were really good. We had a good car in the Heat Race and I think if we started closer to the front tonight, we could have contended,” the driver of the CJB Motorsports No.5 said. Kerry Madsen and Logan Schuchart completed the top five. Gravel Outguns Schatz In Big Guns Bash
David Gravel came out on top of a thrilling battle with Donny Schatz in the finale of the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series Brownells Big Guns Bash at Knoxville Raceway. The Watertown, Conn., driver’s win was his third at Knoxville and was worth $10,000 aboard the CJB Motorsports No. 5. Schatz led the 25-lap World of Outlaws main event early on ahead of a battle for second between Brad Sweet and Brian Brown. Logan Schuchart was fourth and Cory Eliason fifth. Gravel asserted himself on the second go-around, surging from sixth to fourth. Justin Henderson suffered damage to his right rear and came to a stop three laps in. The double-file restart had Schatz choosing the inside line ahead of Sweet, Brown, Gravel, Schuchart and Eliason. When the green waved Gravel fought by Brown for third, and Schuchart used a slider to move into fourth two laps later. Sweet would reel in Schatz and slid in front of him to lead lap nine. Meanwhile, Schuchart was losing power. Schatz battled back by for the point, but the move was negated when the yellow came out for Schuchart. Sweet would choose the inside line on the restart with Schatz beside him, and Gravel behind. Gravel would duck under the entire front row heading into turn one and slide up into the lead. Sweet and Schatz put on a furious battle the next few laps for second, while Brown rode in fourth. Schatz would take the runner-up spot on lap 14. As the leaders approached traffic for the first time, with seventeen laps down, Brooke Tatnell brought out the final caution when he stopped in turn three. On the restart, Gravel held off Schatz, but it wasn’t easy. The two traded the lead briefly, before Gravel began to pull away and pick up the victory, with Schatz coming home second. Sweet, Brown and 23rd-starting Davey Heskin completed the top-five. “Who’s ready for Nationals?” said Gravel in victory lane. “We have unfinished business here. We were really good all day yesterday, but for qualifying. We got ourselves in the Dash there. We wanted to start further towards the front, and whoever had the lead there, Donny, me or Brad, I think that’s probably who was going to win the race. Luckily, I was able to get by those guys on the restart. I knew what he (Schatz on the second restart) was going to do. I was thinking I was going to get a good enough start where he couldn’t roll around me. I knew he was going to pick up the crumbles in two about halfway up. I knew I had to hit my line. We just had enough. He gave me room. He’s a first-class racer. I’m happy to race with him most of these nights.” The 360 main event was shortened to 11 laps due to inclement weather in the area. Ryan Giles picked up his second win of the season and the fourth of his career at Knoxville. Feature (25 Laps): 1. 5-David Gravel [5][$10,000]; 2. 15-Donny Schatz [1][$5,000]; 3. 49-Brad Sweet [2][$3,000]; 4. 21-Brian Brown [6][$2,700]; 5. 56N-Davey Heskin [23][$2,500]; 6. 18-Ian Madsen [13][$2,200]; 7. 2-Shane Stewart [17][$2,000]; 8. 83-Cory Eliason [4][$1,800]; 9. 19-Brent Marks [24][$1,600]; 10. 2M-Kerry Madsen [9][$1,450]; 11. 17-Sheldon Haudenschild [11][$1,300]; 12. 2KS-Austin McCarl [10][$1,200]; 13. 7S-Jason Sides [14][$1,100]; 14. 9-Daryn Pittman [15][$1,000]; 15. Sheppard Edges Moran At I-55 Brandon Sheppard denied Devin Moran of a weekend sweep on Saturday evening at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 as he claimed his sixth World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series victory of the season. Moran settled for second but it wasn’t for lack of effort. The young gun left it all on the line on the final lap of the feature as he pulled a massive slider in front of Sheppard as the pair exited turn four and headed toward the checkered flag. The dauntless move brought the crowd to their feet in anticipation of the outcome. As they sprinted down the front stretch for the final time, Sheppard snuck between the No. 9 and the wall to steal the $10,000 payday just 0.289 seconds apart. “I tell you what, I think he was a little bit better than I was at the end,” said Sheppard. “Me and Devin race hard all the time and we rub a lot but it’s one of those deals where he gave me a lane up there and I took advantage of that. It was some hard racing but it was a lot of fun. I wish we would come back to I-55 more often. I like this place a lot.” After starting fifth in the feature, Sheppard commanded the lead on lap 37 by using high-side momentum to boost the Rocket1 Racing machine ahead of Brian Shirley who had relentlessly held to top spot since lap 16. “You know, when Shirley was leading it was getting pretty treacherous down here in [turns] one and two,” said Sheppard. “It was starting to run up good and I knew I wasn’t going to pass him on the bottom and the guys told me to go for it. Mark told me I need to start taking more chances since we’re pretty far behind in the points now. At the end of the day, we’re trying to win races. That’s all we’re doing.” Moran nearly had a picture-perfect weekend after collecting his first win of the season on Friday at Terre Haute Action Track and continuing to ride the wave throughout Saturday by setting fast time, collecting his heat win and then drawing the pole position for the main event. “I was actually just trying to save my stuff a little bit,” said Moran. “There was a lot of tire-ware in the heat races so (crew chief) Wylie (Moran) just told me to keep them clean. I did for the majority of the race and with 15 to go it was time to wrap it up and so that’s what we did.” “I actually messed up off of [turn] two and kind of slid out,” added Moran. “I just couldn’t quite keep up on that bottom. I felt like I was a little better on the top and Danny gave him signals to move up right in front of me on that caution (lap 46) and I knew he was going to go up there on that restart so we just hung on as much as we could and we gave it a shot.” Shirley settled for the final podium position at Federated Auto Parts Raceway defending the spot from Rick Eckert who started seventh and Mike Marlar who started 10th. After a late race caution on lap 46 for a car who spun around in turn four, Shirley, Eckert and Marlar battled three-wide for third for the remaining four eventful circuits. The finish:Sears Craftsman Feature (50 Laps): 1. 1-Brandon Sheppard [5][$10,000]; 2. 9-Devin Moran [1][$5,000]; 3. 3s-Brian Shirley [4][$3,000]; 4. 7-Rick Eckert [7][$2,500]; 5. 157-Mike Marlar [10][$2,000]; 6. 99jr-Frank Heckenast [3][$1,700]; 7. 11-Gordy Gundaker [8][$1,400]; 8. 44-Chris Madden [14][$1,300]; 9. 2-Nick Hoffman [12][$1,200]; 10. 91-Tyler Erb [21][$1,100]; 11. 25-Shane Clanton [11][$1,050]; 12. 7r-Kent Robinson [15][$1,000]; 13. It’s All Brad Sweet At Cedar Lake Brad Sweet completed a clean sweep of the opening night of the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown with his third World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the season at Cedar Lake Speedway. A late race caution took Sweet out of heavy lapped traffic and gave him a clean track and clean air with eight laps remaining. David Gravel and Brent Marks completed the podium. Sweet started the night off right, setting fast time over the field before edging Gravel in a potential Heat Race of the year. Sweet started second in the dash and won that to earn the pole for the 35-lap feature. While it may have looked easy on paper, it was far from it. Sweet, driver of the Kasey Kahne Racing No.49, grabbed the lead early and distanced himself, while Gravel and Marks battled for the runner-up position. Sweet reached traffic by lap six and negotiated the slower cars well. Marks, while running third, made contact with the slower car of Jason Tostenson and lost the third spot to Sheldon Haudenschild in the process. As traffic intensified, Gravel and company closed in looking to steal the victory away from Sweet. Sweet, at this point, was lapping some impressive race cars. As the Grass Valley, CA native tried to put Kerry Madsen, who swept both nights of the FVP Platinum Battery Showdown last year, and Cory Eliason, who has an Outlaw win this year, Gravel, Haudenschild and Marks closed significantly. Haudenschild bobbled on the bottom of one and two and relinquished the third spot back to Marks on lap 22. Just as Gravel and Marks were closing in, ready to pounce, debris in turn four forced a caution on lap 27. With eight laps remaining and a clean track, Sweet was never truly challenged and went on to win by .968 seconds. “I’ve never done a clean sweep before. That’s a heck of a way to start the weekend,” Sweet said. “Lapped traffic was tough tonight, but it’s what wins and loses races. We needed a win, it’s been a while. These NAPA Auto Parts guys have been working hard and they deserve more of these wins.” Gravel finished a nose ahead of Marks for third, after getting held up with a lapped car coming to the checkered. “I definitely didn’t want to see that yellow. My car was getting better as the race went on, luckily, tomorrow’s race is 41 laps. Hopefully we can finish one position better,” the driver of the CJB Motorsports No. 5 said in good spirits. Marks was very pleased with his evening, “I was surprised tonight, we weren’t very good here last year but we were excellent tonight. Sheppard Rebounds At Dubuque Brandon Sheppard rebounded from a flat right-rear tire on lap nine of the 40-lap World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series feature to collect his seventh victory of the season Friday night at Dubuque Speedway. Sheppard used every ounce of energy he had to put the Rocket1 Racing machine back in victory lane for back-to-back World of Outlaws triumphs. “I didn’t want to have to work that hard, you know what I mean,” said Sheppard. “It was a lot of fun out there. It was really treacherous out there on the high-side but if you got up against the wall it was fairly smooth getting into the corner to get turned and get straight down the straightaways so I didn’t bounce coming off. It was just a phenomenal race. It was a lot of fun to drive. It was hard to drive but it was a lot of fun out there.” In addition to the team’s impressive comeback from the tail of the field, this win hit a little closer to home for the crew chief of the Rocket1 Racing team Danny White, literally. Growing up in Dubuque, the three-eighths-mile dirt track nestled in the Dubuque County Fairgrounds was familiar territory for White who considers the Dubuque Speedway his home track. “Thanks for all of the fans for coming out and hopefully this was a good deal for everybody,” said White. “The track wasn’t exact but it was still a good race. It’s just awesome to come home. I have some family and friends everywhere. This one is probably really close to the top of the list of special wins with this team.” With his seventh win of the season, Sheppard ctrails point leader Chris Madden by only 46 markers. “The points, I’m not even thinking about it right now,” explained Sheppard. “We’re just trying to win these races. It’s a lot of fun out there whenever you don’t have to worry about it. It’s always in the back of your head but at the end of the day to win the points you have to beat them guys so if we keep winning races we keep beating them.” Although Sheppard is steadily inching ahead in the standings, he remains a solid third for now. On the other hand, the top two drivers, Chris Madden and Mike Marlar, were separated by a slim four points (respectively) prior to Friday’s action at Dubuque Speedway and it was quite an eventful turn of events during the shootout. It all started during qualifying when Madden hit the wall resulting in extensive right side damage to the Barry Wright Race Cars No.44. With a little extra help from Shane Clanton and the No.25 crew, Madden’s ride was back in pristine condition for its heat race. Unfortunately, the team’s hard work did not last long after being involved in a tangle in turn one on the very first lap. With a fair share of bad luck for Madden, Marlar seemed to have the series point lead all but locked away. Starting from the pole, Marlar led a majority of the $10,000-to-win event. Yet, on lap 35 of the 40-lap event, his luck ran out as he suffered from a right-rear flat tire forcing him to surrender the lead. With the dramatic turn of events for both drivers, the positions in the point standings remain the same. Charging to a seventh-place finish after starting 23rd, Madden extended his lead over the 13th-place finisher Marlar from four points to now 16 points. Chris Simpson saw his season luck uptick during the World of Outlaws event at Dubuque Speedway. Simpson commandeered the lead from Marlar on lap 35 ahead of Sheppard and Jimmy Mars. His reign as race leader was short lived. Sheppard bypassed Simpson on the inside as the pair drag raced down the front stretch passing under the flag stand separated by just 0.060 econds. “It just got a little slicker and the ruts just got a little bigger,” said Simpson. “All-in-all I’ll take it. I saw that I had a right-rear flat so I felt like that was messing us up at the end of the race. It is what it is but to run second to these guys, you know these guys do it for a living and we work Monday through Thursday. We’ve been struggling the last couple of weeks and we tested last night so to come here and run good, it makes us feel good… Congratulations to BShepp and the Rocket team. They are a top-class team so to run second to them, is pretty cool.” Mars rounded out the podium at Dubuque Speedway after starting eighth in the feature. The finish:Sears Craftsman Feature (40 Laps): 1. 1-Brandon Sheppard [4][$10,000]; 2. 32-Chris Simpson [2][$5,000]; 3. 28-Jimmy Mars [10][$3,000]; 4. 30-Brian Birkhofer [3][$2,500]; 5. 91-Tyler Erb [7][$2,000]; 6. 9-Devin Moran [5][$1,700]; 7. 44-Chris Madden [23][$1,400]; 8. 18c-Chase Junghans [9][$1,300]; 9. Madsen Breaks Through At Cedar Lake Kerry Madsen, who swept both nights of last year’s FVP Platinum Battery Showdown at Cedar Lake Speedway, got the monkey off his back with his first World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the season Saturday night. In a 41-lap feature in honor of Jason Johnson’s birthday, Madsen passed Brad Sweet on lap 38. Sweet settled for second with Donny Schatz completing the podium. For the second consecutive night, Sweet won the Sears Craftsman Dash, earning the pole for the Feature alongside Jacob Allen. Sweet charged from fifth to second in his heat to qualify for the dash. Sweet led the opening lap utilizing the bottom of the racing surface, Allen powered around Sweet to lead lap three in search of his first WoO victory. Allen maintained the lead, while Sweet stayed right with the driver of the Shark Racing No. 1a. With 10 laps complete, a yellow for Shane Stewart — who was running in the top five — negated Sweet’s pass to regain the lead. Allen elected the top on the double-file restart and lost the lead to Sweet heading into turn one. Madsen would pull a slide job on Allen to steal second on lap 17. A lap later the final caution of the evening flew for Justin Henderson, setting up another double-file restart. Sweet maintained control on the restart and continued to lead as he navigated lapped traffic. Madsen, who started sixth, stayed right with Sweet and made a bid to the outside of Sweet for the lead on lap 36 in turn one, to no avail, as Sweet slid in front of the Australian to maintain the lead down the backstretch. Madsen got another run off the cushion and this time slid in front of the Kasey Kahne Racing No. 49 to take the command on lap 39. Sweet tried to turn back under but was unable to do so as Madsen distanced himself to the checkered flag two circuits later. Madsen would go on to win by .783 seconds over Sweet. “We haven’t had the results we wanted, but we knew we had the potential. I want to thank Tod Quiring, I really enjoy driving for this organization,” Madsen said. “Guy Forbrook and my guys gave me a great race car. We had a lot of fun tonight, it’s a relief to finally get a win. To go from where we were last night, to tonight is incredible.” Sweet settled for second and referenced lapped traffic after the race. “That’s what wins and loses these races, I got off my line a little bit. We’re running up front every night, it’s just a matter of putting it all together,” Sweet said. Schatz started and finished third and applauded the track crew for the work preparing an excellent racing surface. “The race track was good, there were multiple lines on the track,” Schatz said. “I just couldn’t find any speed. That’s the way it goes some days. It’s time for some big races and we are looking forward to that.” David Gravel and Dominic Scelzi completed the top five. Mike Marlar Controls Gopher 50 Mike Marlar was in a league of his own on Saturday night at Deer Creek Speedway for the 39th annual Gopher 50 sanctioned by the World of Outlaws Craftsman Late Model Series. Marlar set fast time, claimed his heat win and dominated the 24-car field during the 50-lap feature to earn his third victory of the season. With this win, Marlar sits only two points shy of overthrowing Chris Madden for the lead of the World of Outlaws standings. “I’m a firm believer in if anything bad ever happens to someone, it’s followed by something even better,” said Marlar. “It’s an honor to get a win here tonight.” On Friday at Dubuque Speedway, it seemed as though Marlar would certainty claim the lead of the point standings by the end of the night; that was until lap 35 of the 40-lap event. After controlling the entire feature, with only five laps remaining, Marlar suffered from a flat right-rear tire sending him to the pits for a new Hoosier tire and then to the tail of the feature. Marlar rebounded from the previous night’s heartbreak with a picture-perfect night for the No. 157 Delk Equipment team. “You know [the points are getting tighter]. I was so bummed out this morning and so we all made a decision that we’re not points racing from here on out, we just come to race and do the best we can do, and if we win the points that’s great, but if we don’t, we’ll hug the guy that does,” said Marlar. The crowd was electric throughout the evening but especially during the thrilling feature event which kept the fans on the edge of their seats. Pole-sitter Shane Clanton led the first 29 laps of the 50-lap shootout ahead of a close battle for second between Marlar and Chris Simpson. Marlar broke free of Simpson’s grasp to take the lead from Clanton on lap 30. From there, Marlar never looked back as he expanded his lead to more than four seconds by lap 46. Behind Marlar was a wild battle for second between Series veteran Clanton and young gun Tyler Erb. Multiple slide jobs were exchanged between the pair but Clanton held Erb off for the runner-up spot. “We just have to get lady luck off our back,” said Clanton. “We had a good car tonight we just made the wrong adjustment there and we were a little too tight later in the run. Excellent car for the first 25 laps. Couldn’t have asked for a better one. We’ll take it and head on to Black Hills and try to make a better adjustment.” Known for his aggressive up-on-the-wheel driving-style, Erb kept Clanton on his toes for the remaining laps of the event. “He made me get up on the wheel there when he got by me, so I got up on the wheel and got back by him,” said Clanton. “Those guys have a lot of years on me but I’m super excited when things are going the right way and it makes racing a lot of fun,” said Erb, who is the youngest full-time driver on tour with the World of Outlaws. “Our car was really, really good but I didn’t win that heat and that put us back one more row… I just wish we could have had a caution in there. Another solid run. If we keep knocking off top-five and top three finishes, I think will come pretty soon.”

Schatz Holds Off Larson In Brad Doty Classic Saldana, pounding the cushion, got a run on Schatz down the backstretch and threw a big slide job in turn three to take the second spot by a nose at the line when the caution waved for Reutzel. The restart saw Schatz and Saldana exchange slide jobs, once again allowing Marks to escape. Saldana wrestled the runner-up position away from Schatz on lap 17, as Kyle Larson made his presence known moving into the top five. As the caution flag waved for Brad Sweet on lap 21, heartbreak struck for race-long leader Brent Marks. Marks pulled pit side with a flat tire that was ailing his family owned No.19 machine for a handful of laps. Marks’ misfortune awarded Joey Saldana the lead and lane choice on the double-file restart with 19 laps remaining. Saldana elected the bottom, giving Schatz the top. Saldana slid up the track, attempting to halt Schatz’ momentum, but the nine-time series champion turned his Textron Off Road sponsored, Tony Stewart Racing No.15 underneath to lead down the backstretch on lap 22. Schatz led the lap with Saldana and Larson nose to tail at the line. Saldana tried another slider the following lap, but Schatz once again, cool and smooth, turned it back underneath to maintain the lead. Saldana made another attempt for the top spot but allowed Larson to sneak by for second in the process. Larson set his eyes on Schatz, following him on the cushion in turns three and four and going lower than him in turns one and two. While Larson was never farther than five car lengths back, he never truly threatened to take the lead from Schatz, who won by 1.273 seconds. “I won the Brad Doty Classic,” Schatz said. “I did not expect the track to stay that good throughout the race. Hats off to my entire Textron Off Road team, they work extremely hard and make this car a lot of fun to drive.” Larson praised Schatz for being the best at his craft. “Donny is so good around the bottom and the middle and he can still get up on the curb and rip it. He’s the best out here,” Larson said. “I was a little too patient, but it was a fun race and it’s awesome to race in front of such a great crowd.” Saldana, who just came back from the West Coast, was pleased to finish third. “To put it on the frontstretch with these guys is awesome,” Saldana said. “I can’t thank Kevin Rudeen enough for giving me a great race car to race against the best two drivers in the world. Hopefully, we can keep it going this weekend at Eldora.” Rico Abreu was strong all night, finishing fourth with Macedo fading to fifth at the line. Feature (40 Laps): 1. 15-Donny Schatz [4]; 2. 57-Kyle Larson [15]; 3. 26-Joey Saldana [3]; 4. 24-Rico Abreu [5]; 5. 3G-Carson Macedo [1]; 6. 9-Daryn Pittman [7]; 7. 17-Sheldon Haudenschild [21]; 8.
