^ If that were true, Lewis would not have allowed Max to get close enough to attempt the pass. Why would MBZ have taken that chance if not necessary? Underestimated Max's progress? He told Bono to 'let me do it' and maybe that's what happens when you think you know everything. IIRC what he told Bono was "leave me to it", which I took to mean "don't bother me at this moment because I am busy". Anyone who thinks Hamilton was not aware of Max's progress is delusional. As Damon Hill pointed out, Hamilton "sold Max a dummy" by pulling to the right on the straight making Max stay to the outside where Hamilton could push him wide. Maybe you don't trust Damon's ability on this but Hamilton has a LOT of race experience under his belt; both passing and being passed.

We could be in for some treats this year - both Max and Hambone are long on racecraft.

I didn't see Damon's response but I still think Lewis didn't think Max could catch him that quickly, yes I think he set him up for where he wanted Max to attempt a pass but after that Max really didn't have a decent chance to make a pass. Now I do think that Lewis delayed passing Max as he went thru his options of where and when to take it back which helped him, I think next time Max will just pick a better place and force Lewis to pass him much sooner giving Max a better chance and place to try for the lead again.

Tracks have to enforce their limits - without involving Stewards.

Tracks have to enforce their limits - without involving Stewards. We've been thru this before they can't do that as it gets too expensive to change the track layout for every kind of vehicle that comes to race there, super bikes require this kind of runoff F1 cars that we watch here require that kind of runoff. The days of a track like Monaco ever getting a race today are as over their roads and barriers would never be approved except they are on it because they've been on it forever, and probably the money. If tracks can't support multiple kinds of races they are doomed to be left off the calendar at some point. Sure like Monaco there are a few specified tracks still out there but they are getting fewer and fewer as the money to run a track and get a major race to come to your track gets more and more expensive. If we want to see racing we have to put up with vehicles that will try and expand the track limits as much as they can get away with.

Just tack them down when F1 comes to town. They don't even have to be that crazy big or sharp; those tires are fra gee lay.

...or, the stewards could set ONE standard and STICK TO IT!

SO we are finally down to the actual fix the FIA could do...pay a set of stewards to be permanent at every race.

As long as the 'set' consists of more than one individual - there will be multiple standards at play within the mind of each individual that is a part of the set. Each individual argues for 'his' version of the standard. When the track is constructed to enforce its limits - there is no question when the limits have been exceeded.

No, there will only be ne standard. Four wheels over the line and you're off the track. And there's already multiple eyes on each corner so the only individual that interprets that standard is the race director, Massi. His inability to do his job shouldn't be the track owners burden just like their inability to maintain a safe venue shouldn't be the sport’s.

Problem is the officials on the stewards' panel can overrule the race director, al la Spa 2008. In fairness, I think the race director should be the authority and have the final say.

Bring back gravel traps to eliminate favoritism.

Looking back on that incident in view of a long line of sketchy moments by Hammy I'd say the stewards carried the proper level of attachments by telling Charlie to piss off and they'll handle it.

This musical chair game with stewards creates a different interpretation every race. The same officials each weeks would bring consistency with the calls. I can't believe F1 even considered rotating stewards let alone went with it.

True but over time they will bend to the 'new norm' and their own 'feelings' will be shoved aside, or they won't be invited back again, until we have a 'norm' for every track. Now that could mean that this track has this norm and that track has that norm but I think that's better than where we are right now as long as the 'norm' is enforced upon the drivers during the race.

Stewards have a much more important function than observing painted lines.
