Mazepin not a lock (all but a sure thing) yet but Mick should have the seat. I'm thinking that a big part of the deal will involve Ferrari designating availability of engineers who would otherwise be out of F1 work under the budget cuts.

So Ted Kravitz stated in his post ace notebook " Expect Sergio Perez to be confirmed for Red Bull Racing in the next week with Albon becoming the reserve driver." Would be a huge upgrade.

If 'it's the car' then Alex is not worthy of a drive at this point in time because he's not close enough to Max for a top Team. Sure he has skills but over the race distance and qualifying he's not shown the ability to crank it up to eleven and pop out a lap worthy of a top car, yes he's had a couple of 'where did that come from' results but they just aren't consistent enough. And yes he's done some passing attempts that worked that most others would not even attempt, but some of those have failed too. In short Alex's problem is time and Red Bull just doesn't the time to wait for him to mature like they did with Max, they need a driver like Mercedes has with Bottas for Hamilton, someone that can win races if the #1 guy has problems.

Max has already had, what 7 years, to grow up on Red Bull's dime? Max has always been able to wring a cars neck, finally he is learning that the car can win without being driven beyond its abilities. Of course MB having put their PU's in power saving mode helps. That Albon couldn't best the MB duo with MB in power saving is the real problem.

Power saving for Mercedes was only worth about .1 of a sec a lap. RB has admitted that their car is difficult to drive which flatters Max but is a problem for Alex. It's also not the best car so that's 2 counts against RB's track performance. They finished 2nd which is the best they could hope for but never challenged Merc for either the drivers or the constructers championships. I don't care who was in the 2nd car that wasn't going to happen because Merc always had something in hand that they didn't need to use. I think the problem that RB needs to solve is not the 2nd driver it's the gap to Merc. That's where their focus needs to be and everything else is a waste of time. Whether Perez is the 2nd driver or not is irrelevant.
As a team owner DM needs to be asking his 2 top guys, Horner and Newey, how they will solve that problem.

Albon has a few things in his favour, the company is majority Thai owned and Red Bull doesn't really expect to challenge Merc until 2022 when the new cars bow so he has the backing and the time. He doesn't HAVE to adapt to the current car as much as improve his qualifying and race craft, not be lapped by his team mate and stop destroying cars. I wouldn't be surprised to see him in the car next year because Perez may be (and want) more of a commitment than RB wants going forward and they still have Gasly if Alex doesn't improve.

All things considered - this has not been the 'Wimpest of Silly Seasons' in F1.
Changes on a number of teams, including multiple WDC's

Actually at the time it was changed to wimpy it was even before the pandemic shutdown and because RB and Max killed the buzz off early.
Lest anyone think it's over Toto and Hammy are still unsigned and whatever happened to the end of November sell by date for Red Bull's engine freeze decision? As has become the custom RB will not be able to continue without it so what difference does having Perez or Albon matter for one year?

Each team should have two drivers that push each other and are fairly close in speed. It makes the team better and the drivers faster. I don't see that on the track with Albon. He might have a bright future but he needs works before he is much of a threat in a RB car. Perez is a more polished driver so he should adapt to quirky car better than a young driver like Albon. I look at F1 as the pinnacle of motorsports. Its not a learning series. Learning should be done in the lower series before they get to F1. Unfortunately the drivers buying seats don't follow that.

When you are dealing with what are considered pinnacle series - the reality is that none of the stepping stone feeder series have machines that don't possess the characteristics of the machines of the pinnacle series. So ANYONE making the jump from the feeder series to the pinnacle series is forced to learn the machine at the top. Pinnacle level learning can only be done when in the seat of a pinnacle level machine. EVERY top level professional undertaking has a learning curve for those that progress to that level, and everyone progressing to that level doesn't cut it. F1 is no different.

And Hammy has publicly said, I read it on Google, that he wants his contract for next year signed before Christmas....I think he's dreaming but who knows. Personally I would sign him but NOT for what he's been making as it's obvious with a bit of work Russell can fit right in for a whole lot less money. Teams are NOT about WDC's as they get nothing for them other than bragging rights, while the WCC is a Team title with a shipload of money and Russell would help do that. Now if they got rid of Bottas and moved Russell into his seat then Hammy can be invaluable as long as the data is shared between both sides of the garage.

Too much bad water under the bridge from Red Bull and Honda to make an early engine freeze a real thing, some of the wags think Liberty can use it as a carrot to coerce Horner into signing Perez but that's just a fever dream.
