give lulu, or fattel, or freddy the fastest car and they win. big surprise there. then give lulu a car that's not quite right and he's on the radio blaming everybody but the chef in the motorhome for his troubles. give fattel a car that's not quite right and he'll prolly overdrive it at some point at it will cost him and his team dearly. Give freddy a car that's not quite right and he'll drive around the problems and deliver the best possible finish. freddy's rants on the radio the last few years don't really count. they've given him a car that is 2-3 seconds off the pace, and years of that s+++ he complains. You are probably correct but apparently he's such a pain in the ass in the garage that he's not worth it. Team championships and all that.

Assuming that it goes through, it's not the biggest surprise ever. It's probably better for Red Bull than bringing in two rookies, one of whom is likely not ready for F1. And it gives Kvyat a second chance, even if he is very clearly a stop-gap for when the next youngsters are ready to step up to Toro Rosso. I just hope he's re-discovered his confidence in his year off the grid.

Which Russian Oligarch is bringing the money to put Kvyat back in the seat?

Personally I think Kvyat is coming back because they are running out of drivers with valid Super Licenses.

Unless Ferrari can get Alonso in a car Vettel is the best option. Despite his mercurial performances I still think Vettel is overall better than Alonso. Vettel has overtaken Lewis twice on track this season. As far as I can remember Alonso has never overtaken Hamilton on track. Problem is Hamilton may be better than both.
These three drivers are very good, no question. We could argue for weeks, which one is the best of all. Hard to tell.
But looking at Ferrari with Alonso, and Ferrari with Vettel there has been clear differences.
With Alonso-Ferrari, I remember going into a race and hoping to finish in the top 5 and maybe make a podium. Alonso freaking wins that stupid race
With Vettel-Ferrari, there have been many races this year thinking its a cake win for Ferrari. Vettel then wrecks on the first turn, goes to last and then spends most of the race driving like crazy to finish fifth.
Sorry, but this year there is no excuses. Ferrari arguably has the best car of the grid but somehow Vettel has not been able to make the best out of it.

Okay, so why isn't Alonso still driving for Ferrari? or any F1 team next year? In 2014 Alonso driving a Ferrari won zero races. In 2015 Vettel driving a Ferrari wins three. How does that make Alonso look good?

Alonso not driving for any team next year has nothing to do with his track skills.
Alonso took Ferrari to a championship fight to the last race twice in arguably the second or even sometimes 3rd best car of the year. Vettel has yet to do that.
To be fair, Vettel, during his tenure, did not have the best car until this year. However, if he does not win this year (and I really hope he does), it will not be because Ferrari did not deliver the proper equipment.
Alonso is out. It does not matter, he is history and will not drive for Ferrari again.
However, if Sebastian does not pull it together, I would not be surprised to see Hamilton driving for Ferrari soon.

Alonso not being in F1 next year does have something to do with track skills. Why do you think RedBull, Ferrari and Mercedes all passed on hiring him? RedBull and Mercedes passed him over multiple times.
Even though the battle didn't go to the last race Vettel brought the title fight to Mercedes in 2015 and last year in a second rate car. Do you it is just a coincidence that the Ferrari has gotten better since Vettel joined the team?
I agree Alonso is a great driver but his reputation is more hype than fact. Just look at how he threw his WDC away in 2007 by crashing out in the rain at Fuji.
On your last point I agree. In two years I expect Vettel and Hamilton to swap seats.

So the plan was for Kimi to become babysitter/driver-coach at Sauber. Got it.

Ocon was about their only choice and he wasn't available thanks to Toto. Oh well, these 2 drivers seem to piss off the Brit fans so that's a plus.
