Rea needs one more win to wrap up 2018 WorldSBK title 24.09.2018 BSN WorldSBK bosses will be willing Chaz Davies and Michael van der Mark to try and halt the inevitable charge of four-time world champion-elect Jonathan Rea this weekend so the championship has something for the fans in Argentina. Rea needs to win the opening race in France with Ducati’s Davies in third to wrap up a quartet of on-the-bounce big trophies. The Irishman has seven Magny-Cours podiums to his name – three of which he has stood on the top step. Davies is still riding injured after he sustained a collarbone injury over the summer break. Putting on a superhuman performance last time out in Portugal to secure two fourth positions, it will be a big battle for him in France. But with the added rest, it won’t be a surprise to see him fighting at the sharp end this weekend. The 31 year old has three wins in the last four races held here, he will be out to stop Rea taking the title. Mathematically in with a chance of stopping Rea this weekend, Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha) could affect his title chances. The young Dutchman has had an impressive second season with his Yamaha team, and heads to a circuit which holds some special memories. But the only thing on van der Mark’s mind will be securing second position in the world championship standings. Pulling 10 points on Davies in Portugal, he sits 20 points off the runner-up spot, so with consistency in the final three rounds, it might not be so out of reach. Another title this weekend does seem inevitable, which is good for Rea but not so good for the Argentina round as crowd, such as it will be, already know the championship has been settled… However, Rea was scuppered in Jerez a couple of years ago when Pirelli didn’t include his favoured front tyre in the allocation.

Carrasco holds onto lead despite difficult weekend Wednesday, 19 September 2018 The Spanish rider could only finish tenth and will have one last shot for the title at Magny-Cours Ana Carrasco (DS Junior Team) was unable to convert her first match point at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve and win the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship. The DS Junior Team rider did however overcome another difficult weekend at Portimao, where she arrived with a 16-point advantage over her closest rival for the championship, Luca Grunwald (Freudenberg KTM WorldSSP Team), and goes into the final weekend still leading the standings. Had she been able to fight for the first positions, Carrasco could have taken her first crown in Portugal, but the opportunity never came. Starting from ninth on the grid, the rider from Murcia suffered from a slow start, falling back to 17th position. After a few passes Carrasco could not advance further than tenth position, with no option of a higher finish. The Kawasaki rider did manage to record the fastest lap of the race (1’56.801) in her efforts to climb a few places, a small consolation. More important than that however was the fact that she scraped home six points more for the championship, which will allow her to face the last race of the season in command, albeit with a smaller advantage. Carrasco leads Scott Deroue (Motoport Kawasaki), her biggest threat in this season’s end, by just ten points. After her two extraordinary wins at Imola and Donington Park, the Spanish rider has been unable to finish higher than tenth in the last three races. Carrasco admits: “It’s been a tough race, I lost several positions inside the first lap and then I found it hard to fight back. Overall, I think we’ve done a good job this weekend, but we were missing something during the race. On the bright side, we’re still leading the championship. I hope that in France we can improve and fight for the win”. The final and decisive FIM Supersport 300 World Championship race will take place in less than two weeks at the French circuit of Magny-Cours, and four riders can still mathematically win the title: Carrasco, Deroue, Mika Pérez (Kawasaki ParkinGO Team) and Grunwald.

No team orders for Rea, Sykes 26.09.2018 BikeSport News Kawasaki WorldSBK team boss Guim Roda has not issued any orders for Tom Sykes to assist Jonathan Rea in his quest for a fourth straight title at Magny-Cours this weekend. Rea needs to win the first race with Chaz Davies in third or worse to clinch a Fogarty-equalling quarter of big trophies but Roda says he will let the team non-mates sort it out for themselves. “There are no team orders, just let them to be mature enough during the race,” he told bikesportnews.com. Given the acrimony between the two and the fact Sykes has been shuffled out of the squad to make way for BSB champion-eect Leon Haslam, this weekend could be interesting.

Four riders, twelve laps, one crown
Tuesday, 25 September 2018
Carrasco, Deroue, Pérez and Grunwald all reach season finale with options to take title
The Circuit de Nevers Magny-Cours hosts the grand finale to this season’s FIM Supersport 300 World Championship after what has perhaps been the closest championship race in all of WorldSBK history. In the seven previous races we’ve had six different race winners and thirteen riders on the podium. Most importantly, four of those riders can still take the title back home in what promises to be twelve laps of nerve-wrenching excitement.
Ana Carrasco (DS Junior Team) remains in control of the championship standings with a ten-point advantage, however that same lead has shrunk after every round since her extraordinary Donington Park win. The Spanish rider missed a first chance to write her name in the history books at Portimao, where she could only cross the line in eleventh position (reviewed to tenth after Sánchez’s penalty). Third time lucky will not be an option for Carrasco: it’s all or nothing at Magny-Cours for the WorldSSP300 trailblazer.
Few riders left Algarve happier than Scott Deroue (Motoport Kawasaki) and fewer still with as much momentum. After a string of bad results and awful luck, the Portuguese Round seemed to mark a change in fortunes for the Dutchman: he dominated proceedings at Portimao and stands just ten points behind Carrasco. Last season his title challenge fell apart at Magny-Cours – will the 2018 Acerbis French Round bring redemption for Deroue?
Mika Pérez (Kawasaki ParkinGO Team) is yet to win a race this season, yet through sheer perseverance and showing the consistency of a champion he finds himself eighteen points behind Carrasco with one round to go. He’s finished second in both last two races and whilst his options are slim, have no doubt that the youngest of the four contenders will give it his all until the checkered flag.
Fourth in the title chase is Luca Grunwald (Freudenberg KTM WorldSSP Team), 22 points behind the leader. The KTM rider was unfortunate at Portimao, crashing in the final laps following an incident with another rider and leaving the seventh round of the season with no points, after battling inside the front group. It might take a minor miracle now for the German to win the championship, but if we know one thing for certain it’s that nothing is certain in WorldSSP300 until the checkered flag comes down.

WorldSBK bosses confirm end of European Superstock 1000 27.09.2018 BSN WorldSBK bosses have this morning confirmed the European Superstock 1000 championship will cease to exist at the end of 2018. After 19 seasons of successful racing in around Europe, with 17 different champions and six different manufacturers taking titles in the class, the decision to not continue the series has been made following the evolution of technical regulations in WorldSBK over recent years. “We want to thank all our teams and riders for their commitment and effort throughout the seasons. STK1000 has provided some sensational racing action over the years, but now are looking ahead to the future of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship. We now want to focus on the promotion and expansion of our three main categories,” said series boss Daniel Carrera. So Markus Reiterberger could well be the last ever champion should he be crowned this weekend.

BBC to ensure Rea Sports Personality success is never repeated 28.09.2018 BSN David Miller Jonathan Rea’s second place in last year’s BBC Sports Personality of the Year competition -– if it can be called that – upset all the old, white men at Broadcasting House so much they are taking measures to ensure that minority sports are never again allowed to surpass establishment favourites. The massive support Rea garnered in the public vote – which Anthony Joshua was so sure he had won that he wheeled in an entourage big enough to wear all of Elton John’s dresses from 1972 onwards – so irked BBC management, they will change the way the prize is decided. Apparently, the public are not to be trusted as it is they who upset the 2017 apple-cart, having the temerity to vote for a winner who couldn’t be there and a second place that none of them had ever heard of, because he was not a member of the Marylebone Cricket Club or the Lawn Tennis Association or one of the other establishments to which they venture for lunch and fall asleep in their port of an afternoon. The BBC is funded in a unique way – by us via a system of legalised extortion – but god forbid we should decide who our favoured sportsperson of the year is. The establishment does not want their – oh wait, it’s paid for from the licence fee so it’s actually our – blue riband event hijacked by a load of ne’er-do-wells who’ve never even been to Lords. So, if you’re not a tennis player, footballer, golfer, runner or cricketer, forget it. The BBC isn’t interested. It’s time we weren’t interested in the licence fee. It’s not for us, as our sport is not for them.

Cluzel tops Friday WorldSSP times 28.09.2018 Gordon Ritchie at Magny-Cours French riders gave the local spectators plenty to get excited about on Friday as Jules Cluzel (NRT Yamaha) led Lucas Mahias (GRT Yamaha) by 0.239 seconds after the two opening practice session. The sunshine that was a welcome and often unusual accompaniment to the proceedings allowed the best riders to make their best showing, with championship leader Sandro Cortese (Kallio Racing Yamaha) third fastest behind his two of his main rivals. The usual massed tuning fork ensemble of Yamaha riders ran to Randy Krummenacher (BARDAHL Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha) in fourth, Federico Caricasulo (GRT Yamaha Official WorldSSP Team) fifth and another French rider, Corentin Perolari (Yamaha GMT94), sixth. The three-cylinder F3 of Raffaele De Rosa (MV Agusta Reparto Corse by Vamag) was the top non-R6 machine, in seventh place. Hikari Okubo (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) was eighth, and clearly the top Kawasaki rider today. Cluzel’s team-mate Thomas Gradinger (NRT Yamaha) placed ninth and the top Honda runner on day one was Portimao podium man, Kyle Smith (CIA Landlord Insurance Honda). Hannes Soomer (Racedays Honda) was right behind Smith; Luke Stapleford (Profile Racing Yamaha) 15th of the 30 riders.

I wonder if they tell Rea which Free Practice to go out and go slow so it looks for a little while like some other rider will have a chance at the win.

That’s a wrap! Rea takes the win and the title in style Saturday, 29 September 2018 The reigning Champion makes it four in a row as he wins Race One in France, ahead of Sykes and Fores Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team) took the 2018 WorldSBK crown in style at the Acerbis French Round, slicing past teammate Tom Sykes in the early stages of Race One and imperious from there on in to take victory number 13 of the year. Unlucky for some, but far from it for the now four-time Champion. Sykes took second from his record-breaking pole, with Xavi Fores (Barni Racing Team) completing the podium after a three-way fight for third. It was Sykes who got the holeshot from pole, getting a lightning start and leaving teammate Rea to trail him in second – albeit in very close company. Lorenzo Savadori (Milwaukee Aprilia) kept his P3 from the front row as they shot off the line, with Xavi Fores (Barni Racing Team) slotting into fourth as the field made their way around Lap 1. But Rea remained threatening in second and feinted a number of moves, before the reigning Champion pounced for the lead not long after. Just off that fight at the front, Alex Lowes (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team) took an early tumble, followed not long after by a DNF for Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Junior Team) in that same mid top ten group. Rea was then pulling away from Sykes and Sykes from those on the chase as Fores hustled past Savadori and took over in third, but the Italian stayed close and Chaz Davies (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) was beginning to hone in on that battle. Rea crossed the line for win number 13 and his fourth crown in style, with Sykes just behind his teammate in another impressive 1-2 for Kawasaki. Fores was able to fight off Savadori, and both just stayed ahead of Davies by the flag. Davies needed to finish second to stop Rea taking the crown, but after a mid top ten qualifying and still recovering from a broken collarbone, it was a tall order. The Welshman nevertheless put together an impressive ride in difficult circumstances – much like his races in Portugal. His teammate Marco Melandri , after a tough qualifying, moved through from p12 on the grid to take sixth. Seventh went to Michael van der Mark (Pata Yamaha Official WorldSBK Team) as he moved up from tenth on the grid, getting past Toprak Razgatliouglu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) at mid-distance and steadily pulling away from the Turk, who came home in P8. Loris Baz (GULF Althea BMW) had been fighting him in the latter stages but couldn’t make it stick, and just at the end was pipped to ninth by Eugene Laverty (Milwaukee Aprilia). Leon Camier (Red Bull Honda World Superbike Team) took P11, ahead of Jordi Torres in P12 for MV Agusta Reparto Corse.
