Binder tops Friday as Bagnaia sits outside Q2 places Crutchlow fastest in FP2 on a mixed-up day of weather as Bagnaia misses the combined top 10 Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Brad Binder has taken Friday honours at the PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia. On a day of mixed weather, it was Cal Crutchlow (WithU Yamaha RND MotoGP™ Team) who set the quickest lap in a damp MotoGP™ FP2 session at the Sepang International Circuit after a late change to slick Michelin tyres. However, his afternoon benchmark of 2:05.710 was several seconds away from the 1:59.576 which Binder achieved earlier in the day, when the circuit was completely dry. On a weekend when Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) has his first Match Point, he is currently outside the Q2 places after missing the top 10 by just 0.003 seconds in FP1. A wet start A huge downpour caused a lengthy red flag period in the preceding session of the event, Moto2™ FP2, but the sun was shining by the time the premier class rolled out for their second session of the day. All 24 riders started on wet Michelin tyres but there was precious little spray being kicked up by then, as Franco Morbidelli set the early pace despite an excursion through the Turn 9 gravel trap. After lap times started in the 2:15s and beyond, the Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™ pilot got down to a 2:11.734 before Prima Pramac Racing’s Johann Zarco took over P1 for a sustained period of time.
The Frenchman had set a fastest lap of 2:10.807 before Crutchlow, Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing), and Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) all moved the marker. Morbidelli then reclaimed the ascendancy with a 2:09.390 but he was still on wets at a time when some had switched to slicks for the final five minutes of the session. Would fortune favour the brave? Slicks prevail in the end The answer was yes. Alex Marquez (LCR Honda Castrol) jumped from 15th to first by setting a 2:08.644 with a medium Michelin slick on the front and a soft slick on the rear, before a fully medium-shod Crutchlow set a 2:08.436 just before the chequered flag came out. Zarco briefly rebounded to second position with a 2:08.589 on wets but he would be shuffled back to fifth all-told. Alex Marquez got down further to a 2:06.896 but Crutchlow bettered that with a 2:05.710 and then they were split by Bagnaia’s 2:06.610 right at the end.
It meant a top four for FP2 of Crutchlow, Bagnaia, Alex Marquez, and Jack Miller (Ducati Lenovo Team) on a 2:07.553, with Zarco first of those who finished on wets in fifth outright, and Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) ninth after he had an off at Turn 7/Turn 8. However, given FP1 was dry, the combined timesheet matches the classification from that earlier session, when Brad Binder set a 1:59.479 on his final lap of the morning and last-start winner Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar) made a late moved to be classified P2 on a 1:59.576, ahead of Marc Marquez, Enea Bastianini (Gresini Racing MotoGP™), and Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar). Nervous times for the Championship contenders In that earlier session of the day, neither Quartararo nor Bagnaia fitted new Michelin tyres for their final runs, and they would be classified seventh and 11th respectively on a 2:00.543 and a 2:00.770. It sets up a high-stakes FP3 session for both of the key riders in the title fight given Pecco is currently an agonising 0.003 seconds outside the combined Free Practice top 10 and Quartararo is far from safe either. Also with work to do is the third of the title contenders, Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing), who was classified 20th in FP1 after a crash on one bike and a technical problem for the other. The man from Granollers then claimed 21st in FP2.
With no true form guide yet, a fascinating FP3 session awaits. Catch all the action on Saturday from 10:50 (GMT +8)! MotoGP™ Top 10 on Friday 1. Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) – 1:59.479 2. Alex Rins (Team Suzuki Ecstar) + 0.097 3. Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) + 0.144 4. Enea Bastianini (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) + 0.396 5. Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar) + 0.472 6. Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) + 0.487 7. Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) + 1.064 8. Fabio Di Giannantonio (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) + 1.073 9. Luca Marini (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) + 1.254 10. Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) + 1.288

Tardozzi's top quotes from his MotoGP™ Podcast appearance It was a brilliant chat with the Ducati Lenovo Team Manager in Malaysia, so here’s some of the best bits if you’ve not listened yet! At the beginning of a crucial weekend for the Ducati Lenovo Team at the PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia, Team Manager Davide Tardozzi took the time to sit down on the MotoGP™ Podcast – and it was a fascinating, honest discussion. - “Ducati has to apologise to Pecco in some way because it took a couple of races to bring the bike on the way that he deserved and that he likes. That took three, four, five races maybe.” - “In the pre-season tests in Indonesia and here (Sepang), he was so p***** about the technical situation… but in the end, the key point is the very tight relationship Ducati has with Pecco.” - “Honestly speaking, after a couple of minutes after the crash, we said the Championship is gone. After two hours, the words were ‘we have to try hard to bring back those points’ – and that’s what happened.” - “We signed him before he won the Moto2 title. Our decision was on his Moto3 races, it was there where we understood he could be a top rider.” - “There are eight Ducati bikes because the other manufacturers didn’t want to give bikes to other teams. It’s not Ducati that forced them to have the bike, the other manufacturers didn’t provide bikes.” - “I think that what Enea did in Misano, I see that somebody said that Enea arrived second in Misano because of team orders. You finish second by 0.034s!? One metre more and he could have won? You see what Enea did in Aragon, is that team orders?” - “It was absolutely Johann Zarco’s decision. It was his decision. It was his decision, not a Ducati decision. You can understand because we see things that are not true, we read things that are not true. We know the truth.” - “We have always said to the riders, don’t do something too dangerous between Ducati riders. It’s obvious that if in the last race, one position gives us the Championship or not, we give the team orders. We are not stupid.” - “Casey Stoner was very helpful to both Pecco and Jack in Portimao last year. He saw something that helps both to be faster than before and also some suggestions in Australia were very helpful.” - “Jack is an incredibly, incredibly nice person. I love Jack. I love Australians because of their attitude. Jack is also a fantastic team player, I think at least twice this year he’s helped Pecco a lot with his words.” - “I would like to use the words that Gigi has said a lot of times: ‘I came to Ducati and I thought it was a disaster. I found the right people and I’ve just organised the work’. Gigi was so clever to select and go forward with the right ideas, because the know how – I think that over 90% of the Ducati Corse people are the same as the disaster time.”

Simon Patterson: Franco Morbidelli cruising on the racing line AGAIN. Did it once at Sachsenring, twice at Assen, and now twice again this session. Completely unacceptable. Fabio Quartararo rather unhappy with his teammate Franco Morbidelli cruising in front of him. Penalty incoming for the Italian for that? He also blocked MM. Then Baggy fell and Morby got into Quali!

Interview with Jorge Navarro after his crash at Philip Island
The worst is over for Jorge Navarro, who recovers in Melbourne from the ugly fall suffered last Sunday at the Australian GP of Moto2. He fell, Corsi passed over him, broke his femur and he was left two laps lying very close to the track without incomprehensibly taking out a red flag. The Valencian tells AS in a telephone conversation his ordeal.
-How is he?
"Well, under the circumstances, good. I'm bruised, my back and hip hurt but, within the bad, I'm making my way and here I am.
-Fractured femur?
-Yes, yes.
-And operated satisfactorily?
-According to what the doctors told me, everything went well. When I arrived at the hostelpital Alfred de Melbourne, the femur was broken and very displaced. In addition, the femoral artery, which is one of the largest in the body, had lost a lot of blood. He had a bloodlogged leg and this makes the muscles take a little longer to recover. I notice the super heavy leg, but luckily they were able to put a super long needle going from the hip to the knee and what is bone is already in the place it touches. Now it's time to recover the muscles little by little. My whole leg is black and when the blood edema goes down I guess it will improve little by little.
-How long did the operation last?
-It was something fast, about three hours. The truth is that the medical team of the Alfred hospital is super top and since I entered the hospital I felt in very good hands.
-He is going to miss Valencia, the farewell of the World Championship in the home race.
Yes, because a femur is not welded in two weeks. If we remember the case of Acosta, his injury was after Germany and he could not run again to Austria, just over a month and a half later. I haven't even considered running in Valencia with what I've done, really.
-He looks good spirits.
"I am, because I am well cared for in Melbourne. The days go by and yesterday we went for a walk around the city, to have a coffee. I start to have a little life, after a complicated first few days when I was in bed in pain. I start to see a little light at the end of the tunnel and, honestly, I would be excited to race in Valencia, but my priority is me.
-How long do you have left in Australia?
-In theory, if everything goes well, tomorrow I will fly to Barcelona and arrive at seven in the morning on Monday.
-Will you do it in a medicalized flight or how will you do it?
-I will fly in bussines, which the doctors ask me expressly, because in tourist it would be impossible not to bend the knee. Going now 30 hours sitting in a normal seat would be deadly.
Have I relived the Phillip Island accident? If you prefer not to talk about it I would understand, because the images were scary...
I saw the images, because I wanted to see exactly where Corsi passed me. It was like a train passed over me and I didn't feel where it hit me. I just felt that my leg was going to Sydney, as I jokingly say. It was a very strange crash, because I decided not to risk not having feeling with the bike and I had nothing to gain. I started to push a little, I saw a gap, I overtook Corsi and just out of turn 4 I lost the front end. It was a super weird fall and, when I had not yet fallen completely, I noticed that something was happening over me and that I could not feel my leg. It was kind of loose. When I saw her, one part of the leg was looking one way and the other was looking at the other and I understood that it was something serious. I immediately signaled with my hands to the marshalls to come and assist me and stop the race. I was very broken and I couldn't even breathe and I became very nervous. The leg was in pieces and Corsi came to help me and took off my helmet, because I couldn't even breathe. As I did so, the blood from his finger that had become annoyed fell on my leg and when I saw the blood on my leg I did collapse, because I thought it was mine.
-It gives goosebumps to listen to him...
-The leg looked like a chicane and with a lot of blood on top I was very scared. I remembered Tito Rabat at Silverstone, when he fell, was run over and pupaed. And I was there, lying on the ground, a meter from the track and with the bikes passing so close and super fast. while I was dying in pain. Honestly, the worst moment of my life.
-Is it explained that they did not take out a red flag?
-I do not explain it and nobody has given me any explanation. I don't get it. I don't know what else has to happen for them to raise a red flag in a situation like this. I was a meter from the track and the bikes passed me a meter and a half. Yes it is true that it is not a frequent point of fall, but two laps before I had fallen. Above that there was a bit of a side wind coming out of that curve. All the ingredients were given for there to be a tragedy. Luckily, it was not my turn that day, but this cannot be repeated and we must take action on the matter. You can't let it go just like that and I don't know whose decision it was not to take out a red flag.
-From Mike Webb, race director.
Well, these things cannot happen again. I am a lucky guy and I was able to leave without problems than to be a couple of months off, but this is now the least, because there could have been another fatality.
-The tragedy was brushed both in the outrage and in the two laps that he was lying with the motorcycles passing so close. I am very happy to feel him so good after what he suffered. Now it's only a matter of time, isn't it?
For me the worst is over. I found myself in shit lying on the side of the track, unable to move, and only with a marshall protecting me. Once I arrived at the hospital, everything has been more downhill. Now the most complicated thing is to return home, because of the thrombus issues, and start rehabilitation, because right now my leg weighs me about three tons. But this is the least of it and I have the motivation and desire to return to the bike, which are intact.
-Next year will you do the SSP600 World Cup?
-Yes, and I'm really looking forward to it, because it's a winning project with Ten Kate's Yamaha. I feel like a winning guy and it will be a good place for my return.
-Where do you get the strength to want to get back on the bike with the hell you lived last Sunday instead of being tempted to stop, and coming from a hard year at the level of results?
-Honestly, because I think I still have a lot to give and that anger is what will give me the strength to achieve what I think I am prepared to achieve. It has been a tough year, in which I hurt myself from the first moment and I have not felt good with the bike. It is true that there has not been good communication at a technical level with the team and the results have not lived up to my quality or my expectations, but that does not mean that I am going to fall apart. I will continue to fight and I know that my level is higher than shown. I just want to be in the right place to be able to shine and I think next year I will have that opportunity and give my one hundred percent.
-I will encourage you next year with energy. Happy homecoming.
-Thank you Mela. A hug.
