Specifically built for speed and exciting racing, the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia is one of the world’s best. The 2,300 acre complex which also houses a hotel, shopping centre, golf course and other sports facilities cost around £50m to construct and was built in just 14 months, holding its first Grand Prix in April 1999 and setting the standard for race circuits worldwide. With four slow corners following two long straights and ten medium to high-speed corners, the wide track is particularly favourable to overtaking manoeuvres and plenty of open throttle. One of the longest laps in MotoGP is made all the more gruelling for riders by intense heat and humidity. Sepang is located around 50km south of Kuala Lumpur city. The first Malaysian Grand Prix was held at the Shah Alam circuit in 1991 and saw a debut win in the premier class for John Kocinski riding a Yamaha. Shah Alam hosted the event for seven years before the Malaysian GP went to Johor for a single year in 1998. In 1999 the brilliant Sepang International Circuit near Kuala Lumpur, designed by respected racetrack architect Hermann Tilke, hosted its first Grand Prix, with the 500cc race won by Kenny Roberts, Jr on a Suzuki. Since then Sepang has been a consistent fixture on the calendar and the circuit has also been extensively used for MotoGP™ preseason testing over the years.

Francesco Bagnaia: 2022 World Champion in Malaysia if… Here’s how Pecco can claim the MotoGP™ crown this weekend, with Ogura also having a chance to wrap up the Moto2™ title before Valencia Tags MotoGP, 2022, PETRONAS GRAND PRIX OF MALAYSIA It’s #MatchPointPecco this weekend at the PETRONAS Grand Prix of Malaysia and just like us, we hear you asking ‘how can Francesco Bagnaia win the title this weekend?’ The Ducati Lenovo Team star sits 14 points clear of Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) with two races to go, so here’s what needs to happen at the Sepang International Circuit if the Italian wants to go to the season finale as 2022 MotoGP™ World Champion.
Bagnaia, World Champion in Malaysia if…
- He wins and Quartararo doesn’t finish on the podium - He finishes P2, Quartararo doesn’t finish better than P7 and Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) doesn’t win - He finishes P3, Quartararo doesn’t finish better than P11 and Espargaro doesn’t finish on the podium - He finishes P4, Quartararo doesn’t finish better than P14 and Espargaro doesn’t finish on the podium - He finishes P5, Quartararo fails to score any points and Espargaro doesn’t finish on the podium
In the Moto2™ class, Idemitsu Honda Team Asia’s Ai Ogura can also become World Champion this weekend. The maths are much simpler for the Japanese star, as just 3.5 points separate Ogura and Augusto Fernandez (Red Bull KTM Ajo).
Ogura, World Champion in Malaysia if…
- He wins and Fernandez doesn’t finish better than P13

Mat Oxley: Everything sounds better in Italian. Learned from Marini that Italian for shapeshifter/rider-height adjuster is "abbassatore" ie lowering device.
Mat Oxley: Jack Miller is out of the title fight after getting taken out at PI. But he says he still has a chance of finishing in top 3, which is a huge deal, because bonuses are paid from 1st to 3rd. Last year he finished 4th & got nothing. He says he'll be there for Bagnaia if required.
Simon Patterson: Love an honest Miller assessment of the situation. Finishing fourth earns him ‘fuck all’ so fighting for third in the championship is arguably more important than team orders!
Luca Marini responds to Espargaro's outburst: “Aprilia has made a big step forward and Aleix should be proud of it. Ducati has the best engineers and the best bike
