Victor Steeman passes away The FIM family, Dorna Group and the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve pass on our deepest condolences to Steeman’s family, friends, team and loved ones. Following a serious incident in the FIM Supersport 300 World Championship’s Race 1 during the Pirelli Portuguese Round at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve, it is with great sadness that we report the passing of rider Victor Steeman (MTM Kawasaki). Steeman was involved in a multi-rider incident at Turn 14, with the race immediately red flagged. Medical personnel and vehicles arrived at the site immediately and the rider was attended to trackside and at the circuit medical centre before being transferred by helicopter to Faro Hospital. Despite the best efforts of the circuit’s medical staff, marshals and hospital staff, Steeman has sadly succumbed to his injuries. A statement from the family read: “Something you have always been afraid of as a parent of a motorcycle racer has now happened. Our Victor could not win this last race. Despite the unbearable loss and grief, we are extremely proud to share with you that our hero, through his passing, was able to save 5 other people by donating his organs. We would like to thank everyone for the way you have lived with us over the past few days. We will miss our Victor enormously.” Steeman was enjoying a superb 2022 FIM Supersport 300 Championship campaign and came into the Pirelli Portuguese Round with a mathematical chance of clinching the World Championship. With four wins, five podiums and three pole positions to his name this season, he took 12 points-scoring finishes out of 14 races. He also signed his name in the history books with pole position at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, becoming the rider with the most pole positions in the World Supersport 300 class. The FIM family, Dorna Group and the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve pass on our deepest condolences to Steeman’s family, friends, team and loved ones.

David Emmett Absolutely terrible news. Two days after Victor Steeman died, his mother, Flora van Limbeek, died of a heart attack. Just a terrible tragedy for the family.
I had some contact with Flora when Victor was in the RB Rookies. A lovely, warm, cheery woman. And a loving mother. RIP

WorldSBK regulation changes: new super concessions concept, sustainable fuels from 2024 Technical and sporting regulation changes following a Superbike Commission meeting, such as a new super concessions concept for performance balancing and a more sustainable future The Superbike Commission, composed of Messrs. Gregorio LAVILLA (Dorna, WorldSBK Executive Director), Franck VAYSSIÉ (FIM Commission of Circuit Racing Director), Biense BIERMA (MSMA General Secretary), coordinated by Paul DUPARC (FIM Commission of Circuit Racing Manager – SBK Commission secretary), with the presence of Jorge VIEGAS (FIM President), Ludovic REIGNIER (FIM WorldSBK Technical Director), Roland BERGER (FIM CTI Director) and Scott SMART (FIM WorldSBK Technical Director), made the following decisions in Portimao, on 6th and 8th October 2022. TECHNICAL REGULATIONS: Super concessions sustainable fuels and price caps Super concessions A revised concession point system was adopted which will allocate concession points to a larger number of finishers (5) in order to capture a better balance of relative bike performance. Concession points will be totalled every three events and then qualifying manufacturers will pass to a ‘Performance Calculator’ (full details in the regulations). The results can enable manufacturers to either update existing concession parts or to Super Concessions. Super Concessions for 2022 are chassis based. By allowing a greater setting range, manufacturers will be better able to optimise their machines for the intense level of competition that World Superbike is famous for. Since the first meeting of the SBK Commission on Thursday 6th October, this Super Concession concept has been in use, mainly for testing the concept for the end of the 2022 season and to prepare for the 2023 season. Sustainable fuel for all WorldSBK classes The SBK Commission agreed to introduce sustainable fuel for all WorldSBK classes starting from the 2024 season, with a minimum of 40% sustainable fuel content. This E40 fuel shall be compliant with the specification adopted for MotoGP. Price cap of Sport Production machines Due to the global economic situation and the recorded inflation, the FIM wished to consider the cost evolutions of production machines for 2023. A general proposal for a maximum percentage of increase of the maximum retail price of homologated production models was approved. The exact amounts and percentages will be published at a later stage. SPORTING REGULATIONS: podium ceremony and wildcard allocations Podium ceremony In harmonisation with the other FIM World Championships, it was approved that “when the podium is located in the pitlane or above, the pit lane cannot be open during the podium ceremony”. This is to avoid any safety matter in the pitlane. Wildcard allocation When presenting a wildcard candidate to the SBK Commission, the National Federations must ensure and validate that the quality of the rider, their staff, their equipment and the presentation of their team are compatible with the level of the FIM Superbike World Championship. A regularly updated version of the FIM SBK Regulations which contains the detailed text of the regulation changes may be viewed shortly on the FIM website.

PREVIEW: a mountain to climb as WorldSBK arrives at the foot of the Andes in Argentina San Juan will ignite to the sound of World Superbike action as a passionate crowd, a dramatic backdrop and fierce on-track action promise a spectacular Motul Argentinean Round The chase for gold in the 2022 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship has landed in the land of silver, as the tenth round of the season enters the horizon at the Circuito San Juan Villicum venue at the foot of the Andes in Argentina. The Motul Argentinean Round is always a spectacular event, not least for its jaw-dropping backdrop and the passion that oozes from the packed grandstands. The Championship can’t be wrapped up in South America, but it can be a crucial round in determining the outcome, as now more than ever, those chasing behind need big results ahead of the back-to-back finale in Indonesia and Australia. HEADING FOR THE SUMMIT: Bautista’s charge to the title continues A winner on his San Juan debut and victorious of four of the last six races in 2022, Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) is a favourite ahead of this year’s trip to Argentina. The Spaniard is in fine form and with his previous Ducati experience at the track, he should be in contention for victory throughout the weekend once more. Quick to deny that it’ll be another Barcelona-style show, the layout of San Juan – with its long backstraight – suggests that it may well be another strong weekend for Bautista and Ducati, although his title rivals will be keen to make up plenty of time around the rest of the lap. Teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi was quick to go on the contrary to Bautista’s denial about Ducati domination and said openly that 1-2 could be possible; Rinaldi has yet to stand on the podium in Argentina, but a rostrum this year could bolster his teammate’s title chances. NOW OR NEVER: the importance of San Juan for Razgatlioglu and Rea Chasing Bautista, reigning World Champion Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) knows he must reduce the Championship gap before the last two rounds of 2022. Currently at 56, it came down by just three at Portimao by no means enough. Razgatlioglu was a double winner in Argentina in 2021, however, he’s the only rider to finish on the podium there for Yamaha, so will he – like during the opening two races at Portimao – be able to make the difference? Since Argentina’s addition to the WorldSBK calendar, there’s never been a Championship lead change after the round – it could be the most critical round of 2022 for Razgatlioglu. Teammate Andrea Locatelli continues his search for a podium return, with a best of sixth at San Juan last year: can he help his teammate? It's an even more critical round for Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK), who is the most successful rider in Argentina since racing begun there. The win drought dates back to Estoril and wasn’t able to be ended last time out at Portimao, with three third-place finishes was something Rea admitted to being a ‘reality’ at the moment. Fierce last year on his way to two second-place finishes, Rea’s deficit to the Championship lead is 82, the most it’s been since he joined Kawasaki. The goal of a seventh World Championship is slipping away for 2022, but this is Jonathan Rea, the rider who always trusts the process and until the numbers say so, never says it’s over. With nine races to go, a monumental comeback is needed. Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) hopes to be on hand to help if needed, as he chases a first rostrum at the Argentinean circuit. THE DUEL CONTINUES: a tango is set for Honda and BMW It will be an all-new experience for Honda’s line-up of Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) and teammate Xavi Vierge, with neither having visited the circuit before. The battle between Honda and BMW in the standings is intensifying too, as Scott Redding (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) closes up. Lecuona failed to score points in two races at Portimao, particularly strange given his previous knowledge of the circuit and the testing preseason. For Vierge, it was more promising, and the 25-year-old Spaniard was able to come away with two eighth places in the longer races, perhaps starting a late charge to finish the season ahead of his teammate, although Lecuona is 48 points ahead of him. Last year, Honda’s best result was tenth in Argentina, something they’ve achieved six times at the track. In the aforementioned BMW camp, all eyes will be on Scott Redding who – after a tricky Barcelona and Portimao – aims to return to the podium in Argentina, where he’s the most recent winner. A dominant victory in 2021 with Ducati, it’s a circuit that Redding has been strong at and he’ll hope that it remains the case with the M1000RR. Teammate Michael van der Mark put on a scintillating ride through the field at Portimao from 20th to eighth in the Superpole Race, a glimmer of the old magic that the Dutchman had prior to his injury. He’s the rider who gave BMW a best result in Argentina of fifth last year. Can he or Redding improve on that? INDEPENDENTS PROSPECTS: can Bassani be the biggest surprise of them all? Heading to the land of silver, Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) continues to lead the way in the Independents battle, despite a crash in Race 2 last time out at Portimao ending a streak of 26 consecutive race finishes. Bassani was in the battle for victory in Argentina last year, also the scene of his first and only front row start after Superpole to-date. Garrett Gerloff (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) is next up in 11th and just ten points off the top ten overall, occupied by Vierge. Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW) will return to Argentina for the first time since 2019, just three points behind Gerloff, whilst Philipp Oettl (Team Goeleven) hopes he can use Ducati strengths to return to the top ten. Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) continues chasing a first top ten since Magny-Cours, whilst it’ll be Eugene Laverty’s (Bonovo Action BMW) final visit to San Juan as a rider. Kohta Nozane’s (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) final three rounds of WorldSBK action for the time being also enter the horizon and he’ll hope for a top ten before the end of 2022, whilst Hafizh Syahrin (MIE Racing Honda Team) tackles San Juan for the first time. The same can’t be said for home-hero teammate Leandro ‘Tati’ Mercado, with the Argentine rider hoping to return to the points in front of a partisan home crowd. It’s been a tricky season for Mercado, who’ll hope to have his 2022 highlight at home. Continuing to chase his first WorldSBK points, Oliver Konig (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) races at San Juan for the first time. Besides that, the other news is that Xavi Fores (BARNI Spark Racing Team) returns to WorldSBK in place of Luca Bernardi, whilst Roberto Tamburini (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team) and Christophe Ponsson (Gil Motor Sport-Yamaha) finished their season after the European rounds. Returning to WorldSBK action 12 months after his wildcard debut, Marco Solorza (TPR Team Pedercini Racing) joins Pedercini Kawasaki for the event.

"Very good start… We just need to make a step with bike setup" – Razgatlioglu, Rea after finishing 1-2 in Friday running Friday, 21 October 2022 20:34 GMT Reigning Champion Razgatlioglu was fastest overall and in FP1 while six-time Champion Rea went quickest in the afternoon session The MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship descended on the Circuito San Juan Villicum for the Motul Argentinean Round and it was the Champions from 2020 and 2021 who topped the timesheets as they look to gain ground on their title rival. Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) led the times in FP1 as he was straight on the pace while six-time Champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) was fastest in the scorching conditions of FP2. As seen so often throughout his time in WorldSBK, Razgatlioglu was quickest out of the blocks as he topped the times in FP1 with a 1’37.511s, three tenths quicker than Rea in second place. The positions reversed in FP2 as Rea topped the times with a 1’37.707s although it was not enough to depose Razgatlioglu from top spot in the combined classification. Razgatlioglu was unable to improve his lap time between the two sessions, lapping two tenths slower in FP2 compared to his FP1 time. In FP2, when teams and riders traditionally focus on race pace, Razgatlioglu completed a longest stint length of 11 laps with a varied lap time ranging from a 1’37.787s, his fastest in FP2, to a 1’38.932s at the end of his stint. Ten of the 11 laps completed by Razgatlioglu were in the 1’38s bracket as he looked to perfect his race pace ahead of racing action on Saturday and close the gap to Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) in the Championship standings. Reviewing his Friday, the reigning Champion said: “I just enjoyed today, just a problem with the heat. Tomorrow it will be a little bit better but Sunday it could be hotter again. Anyway, it’s a very good start. The position isn’t very important for me, we need a good lap time and a good way of working for the race. We are working and we see the other riders. I’m feeling ready to race but the races are always difficult here. We will see. We are fighting for the win and we need good points for the Championship. I’m not thinking about this, just about winning the race.” Rea also completed an 11-lap, although only ten could be considered representative, stint during FP2 with his times mostly in the 1’38s bracket as well. Eight of Rea’s ten representative lap times were in the 1’38s bracket, ranging from 1’38.297s to 1’38.950s but the first two laps of his stint were in the 1’39s. None of the laps in Rea’s 11-lap stint were in the 1’37s, unlike Razgatlioglu with two, although he did complete a short six-lap stint at the end of the session with three laps in the 1’37s. Rea also discussed his Friday. He said: “It was a solid day. We started off with a good rhythm straight away. We got to work quite quickly to understand our bike setup, the tyres and we did a lot of laps with not too many changes with the bike. Tonight, I expect to put everything together with the team to try and make a step forward with the setup. All in all, I was really satisfied with the condition the track was in today. I understood both tyres, front and rear options, to make the choice clearer. The forecast tomorrow is for the temperature to be a bit lower than Sunday. We just need to make a step with the bike setup. I’ve got clever people in the garage and I’m sure they can put their heads together.”
