Redemption for Razgatlioglu as he resists Bautista for Superpole Race victory in Argentina Sunday, 23 October 2022 15:33 GMT The same corner that cost Razgatlioglu dearly on Saturday was the most important as he took a hard-fought victory The Tissot Superpole Race for the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship was ten laps of thrilling drama at the Circuito San Juan Villicum for the Motul Argentinean Round, as Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) claimed a hard-fought victory after a last-lap battle with Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) in the ten-lap race. The pair were inseparable during the final few laps with Razgatlioglu taking victory by 0.613s. SAME CORNER, DIFFERENT OUTCOME: Turn 9 proves crucial Razgatlioglu took advantage of Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) running wide at Turn 1 when flicking from second to first gear and finding neutral at the start of Lap 6 to move into the lead of the race but had Bautista directly behind him. At Turn 8, Bautista made a move on Lap 8, but the reigning Champion responded instantly. A lap later and Bautista made a move at Turn 8 with, which put Razgatlioglu second, but he responded at Turn 1 at the start of Lap 10 to re-take the lead. On the final lap, Bautista made the same move at the same corner which forced Razgatlioglu to respond into Turn 9 and he did so, running the pair a little bit wide but staying on the track before holding on to take victory. It was a similar move that he tried to make in Race 1 on Saturday which ended up with him in the gravel; Razgatlioglu able to make it work on Sunday. Razgatlioglu’s 29th career victory means he will line up from pole position for Race 2 this afternoon, with Bautista in second and Rea in third. Second was Bautista’s 53rd podium and the 170th for Spain while Rea took third place for his 238th career podium on his 230th start for Kawasaki. Rea also set the fastest lap in the race, making more history as he became the first rider to set 100 fastest laps in WorldSBK races. RACE 2 FROM ROW TWO: fourth to sixth in the Superpole Race Italian rider Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) took fourth place in the dramatic race as he came out on top in a three-rider fight for fourth place. Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) was fifth ahead of Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) in sixth place. The three riders were more than three seconds down on Rea in third but, at the end of the race, were separated by just over a second. STARTING FROM THE THIRD ROW: rounding out the top nine Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) will lead off the third row as he battled back to take seventh spot in the Superpole Race, finishing around two seconds clear of eighth-placed Xavi Vierge (Team HRC). Vierge was the highest-placed rider to use Pirelli’s SCQ tyre and battled his way into the top nine, finishing just 0.076s ahead of Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW) who took the final place on row three for Race 2. Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) just missed out on a spot in the top nine as he finished tenth, just 0.155s behind Baz. The top nine following WorldSBK Tissot Superpole Race, full results here: 1 Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) 2. Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) +0.613s 3. Aegerter denies Baldassarri WorldSSP Race 2 victory with last-lap pass Sunday, 23 October 2022 17:28 GMT Reigning Champion Dominique Aegerter is now potentially one win away from becoming a two-time World Supersport Champion Swiss rider Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) took a last-lap victory in the FIM Supersport World Championship at the Circuito San Juan Villicum to put him on the verge of making WorldSSP history. The reigning Champion extended his lead to 72 points over Lorenzo Baldassarri (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) following the Turn 15 overtake on the final lap during a dramatic Motul Argentinean Round as race leaders crashed out and there were final lap battles to decide the podium places. LAST-LAP OVERTAKE: Aegerter leaves it late… Raffaele De Rosa (Orelac Racing VerdNatura WorldSSP) was controlling the race from first position but his race came to an end on Lap 11 after the Italian crashed at Turn 9 from the lead of the race. Although able to re-join the race, he brought his machine into the pits and retired from the race. This allowed Lorenzo Baldassarri (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team), Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) and Federico Caricasulo (Althea Racing) to fight at the front of the field for victory. With Baldassarri out in front, Aegerter and Caricasulo were battling with each other which allowed the Italian rookie to extend his gap at the front of the field; Caricasulo dropped behind Aegerter initially after an error on Lap 14 in the first sector, with Aegerter taking advantage. Once Aegerter got ahead of Caricasulo, he closed in on Baldassarri over the final few laps and he did so, passing Baldassarri into Turn 10 on Lap 17. Baldassarri resisted Aegerter until the final lap before Aegerter made a move on the Italian at Turn 15 on the final lap to take his 15th win of the 2022 season. Baldassarri ran wide following the move from Aegerter which allowed Caricasulo to take advantage and move into second place, with Caricasulo taking his third podium of the season and his best result of 2022 as he put himself on 25 podiums in WorldSSP. Baldassarri’s third place means he now has 15 WorldSSP podiums but the nine-point swing between Aegerter and Baldassarri in Race 2 means Aegerter can win the title in the next race, when WorldSSP visits Indonesia. IN THE TOP SIX: just missing out on the podium Finnish rider Niki Tuuli (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) had been fighting for the podium places but he ran wide on Lap 7 at Turn 1 which dropped him down the order. Despite closing the gap as the riders ahead of him battled, he was only able to take fourth place and finishing just over two seconds behind Aegerter; fourth is Tuuli’s best result of the season. Stefano Manzo (Dynavolt Triumph) took fifth place, with three ‘next generation’ machines inside the top five, while Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha) took sixth place on his final race in Argentina. ROUNDING OUT THE TOP TEN: ups and downs throughout the field Turkish rider Can Oncu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) took seventh spot as he fought up the field following a difficult Tissot Superpole session, in what turned out to be a bit of a lonely race for Oncu. He was four seconds behind Cluzel but almost six seconds ahead of Nicolo Bulega (Ariuba.it Racing WorldSSP Team) in eighth. Andy Verdoia (GMT94 Yamaha) was ninth as he fought with Bulega in the latter stages of the race, finishing just 0.680s behind the Italian, while Adrian Huertas (MTM Kawasaki) rounded out the top ten. Huertas had to serve a Long Lap Penalty for irresponsible riding in Race 1. TAKING HOME POINTS: leaving Argentina with points Verdoia and Huertas both had to resist Dutch rider Glenn van Straalen (EAB Racing Team) as he finished six tenths down on Huertas in the top ten. Hungarian rider Peter Sebestyen (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) was 12 and three seconds down on van Straalen, but Sebestyen had had a 12-second margin to the rider behind him. Tom Booth-Amos (Motozoo Racing by Puccetti) took 13th place for the second race in a row, the third time he has recorded this position which is the best of his WorldSSP career so far. Ondrej Vostatek (MS Racing Yamaha WorldSSP) was 14th with Swiss rider Marcel Brenner (VFT Racing) rounding out the points-paying positions in 15th. Patrick Hobelsberger (Kallio Racing) was the last classified rider in 16th place. HOUSEKEEPING: to note from Race 2 It was a dramatic start to the race with a crash between Oli Bayliss (BARNI Spark Racing Team) and Hannes Soomer (Dynavolt Triumph) putting Soomer out of the race on the spot, while Bayliss was able to continue although the Australian brought his bike into the pits in the opening stages of the race. Bayliss was taken to the medical centre for a check-up following the crash. At the start of Lap 2, at Turn 1, Luca Bernardi (CM Racing) and Bradley Smith (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) came together, with Smith out of the race and Bernardi briefly continuing before retiring from the race. Both incidents were placed under investigation by the FIM WorldSBK Stewards, to be investigated after the race. It was an eventful race for rookie Yari Montella (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) after he crashed at Turn 13 on Lap 3, before being given a double Long Lap Penalty for a jump start; the Italian rider retired from the race. The top six following WorldSSP Race 2, full results here: 1. Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) 2. Federico Caricasulo (Althea Racing) +0.667s 3. Lorenzo Baldassarri (Evan Bros. Simon Patterson: A €1000 fine for lorisbaz in WSBK for giving a finger to a rider who took him out. At least they're consistently inconsistent there too...

UPS AND DOWNS: verging on history and a costly crash from a title contender Monday, 24 October 2022 08:05 GMT One of the titanic trio is potentially one race away from being crowned 2022 World Champion after a costly crash from one of his rivals… With the Motul Argentinean Round done and dusted, it’s time to look at some of the ups and downs from the Circuito San Juan Villicum in what was a dramatic weekend in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship. From a costly crash for one of the title contenders to one of them putting one hand on the title and being on the verge of history, there is plenty to look at from Argentina as WorldSBK prepares for the final two rounds of 2022. Two wins and one second place for Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) means he is now, potentially, one race away from being crowned 2022 Champion and he will have his first match point in Race 1 in Indonesia. Bautista took victory in both the full-length races in Argentina as he moved 82 points in front of Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) and 98 clear of Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK). He was made to work hard in the opening laps for the victories, but he was able to take two wins. He was denied a hat-trick but a superb ride from Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) in the Tissot Superpole Race as he took one of his best wins in WorldSBK, making crucial moves at a corner that had proven to be so costly just 24 hours earlier. In Race 1 on the opening lap, Razgatlioglu had been passed by Bautista down the back straight and was looking to respond immediately but lost the front of his Yamaha machine at Turn 9 and went tumbling through the gravel. He was able to re-join the race and battled to 15th place but, with Bautista winning, took a 24-point hit in the title race.

Teammates battle: Rea "a passenger" on his way to third, "a shame" as Lowes misses out on a podium Monday, 24 October 2022 08:26 GMT Third and fourth in Race 2 for Rea and Lowes was met with differing emotions for various reasons after a dramatic race in Argentina One of the key moments in Race 2 of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship visit to the Circuito San Juan Villicum came was the battle for third place between Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK teammates Jonathan Rea and Alex Lowes. After dropping down the order, Rea was fighting his way up the field while Lowes was aiming to take his third podium of the season but it was six-time Champion Rea who came out on top in this battle during the Motul Argentinean Round. Rea dropped down from the podium places in the early stages of the race after running wide on two occasions, first dropping behind teammates Lowes and then, shortly after, falling behind Xavi Vierge (Team HRC) and Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati). He was able to get by both Vierge and Rinaldi relatively quickly but was behind Lowes for around 11 laps before eventually making the pass on Lap 18 at Turn 8, using Lowes’ slipstream down the main straight before overtaking into the left-hand corner of Turn 8. Reflecting on a challenging Race 2, Rea said: “Just disappointed because my bike in the Superpole Race was incredible. I had good traction, and everything was working, but from the get-go in Race 2 I had nothing. As soon as I turned into Turn 2, I felt ‘why is the bike not hooking up?’. I was fighting, a real passenger for most of the race. We need to analyse exactly what happened. It was strange. A different bike to what I had. It was a battle with my teammate, Alex. In the beginning with Vierge and Rinaldi so it was about grinding those guys down, letting the tyres move around a little bit. Honestly, Alex’s pace was fast. He just kept going and going and going. There was a point where I thought fourth was my best but I never gave up. It’s important points for us. Not the way I wanted to finish. I would’ve liked to have been a bit closer to that lead battle.” Lowes’ weekend had been compromised after taking ninth in Saturday’s Tissot Superpole session despite believing he had the pace for more, after a late yellow flag for Loris Baz’s (Bonovo Action BMW) crash prevented Lowes from setting a final lap time to move him up the order. Despite starting ninth in Race 1 and the Superpole Race, he battled for sixth in Race 1 and fifth in the Tissot Superpole Race. This gave him a second row start for Race 2 and a lightning start meant he was immediately in the podium hunt, especially after he took advantage of Rea running wide on Lap 2. He held on to third place for the majority of the race but was passed by his teammate with a few laps to go. Reflecting on a rollercoaster weekend, Lowes said: “I was happy with the weekend. I think my pace was fourth this weekend. I was not quite as fast as the first three, but it looked like, in the practices, I was a little bit quicker than the guys behind. Superpole was a shame with the yellow flags. I’m not annoyed at myself, just sometimes it can happen and not quite fall right. We know how close it is in WorldSBK and if you can’t get that lap in, it’s easy to be ninth. The straight isn’t the strongest point of our bike so when you’re ninth or in the mix of that second group, trying to battle at the start of races is quite tough. Race 1 was tough, I was happy with sixth, and it steadily got better as the weekend went on. Shame not to be able to get on the podium. I felt quite good at the end of the race but the SCX rear tyre just dropped and I had a lot of chatter in the end. I couldn’t keep Jonathan behind, but we’ll try again in Indonesia.”
