Further proof that this isn’t a “post Covid” thing in regards to racing. The ratings disaster is unique to the 500 and probably baseball. If people want to watch something, they take the three hours out of their day to do it. And I don’t think it’s solely poor marketing by NBC. The 500 is the same day every year (except 2020) so little marketing should need to be done. The 500 just isn’t appointment viewing. Unfortunately, Indycar and MLB are two sports trending way down. As I said previously, the NHL, NBA and F1 do are doing just fine. www.sportsmediawatch.com/2022/06/rangers-hurricanes-game-7-ratings-espn-viewership-stanley-cup/

Baseball is boring.
Hockey is not.
Indy 500 - most of the race was boring. Coke 600 - majorly boring.

I blame the aero packages for the most part.
Hell, and they were talking about fuel economy within the first 10 laps at Indy. Really? Oh yeah, that's exciting.
Then change the size of the fuel tanks and remove this from the equation. Go balls to the wall, then fill up your tank. Rinse and repeat.
I also think basketball is boring too. Any sport that takes 30 minutes to play 2 minutes needs a serious overhaul.
Hey, kinda like NASCAR!!

It didn't help that the Atlanta Journal-Constitution neglected to list it at all in their "Sports on TV Today" section Sunday.

IndyCar needs a story. It needs something. The old way of doing things is not working.
The drivers are unknown to anyone outside the sport. You could put anybody in half the cars and very few would notice. The Dario’s and Helios and Michaels and Danicas and PT’s are gone. Sponsors have stolen the new drivers’ personalities, and the series and networks have done a shitty job allowing us to get to know the current roster.
I’ve lost interest in the sport the last couple years. Maybe a trip to Mid Ohio in a couple months will reignite it. I hope so. Nothing else has.

I never see any advertisements for IndyCar races on Spectrum channels.
And Spin is right about nobody knowing who the drivers are and having a bunch of politically correct sponsors telling their drivers how to act. Boring whitebread stuff.
One thing is certain: Danica brought eyes to IndyCar and also NASCAR. Women, moms, girls. And they would all spend money. Whether you loved or hated Danica, she brought the viewers.
Look how many women drivers are in the NHRA. And the NHRA TV ratings and live attendance are generally nice and steady.
Maybe IndyCar and NASCAR should take notice.
Oh wait... what am I saying?

OK, so why is the interest in viewership dropping in many forms of auto racing?
In my opinion, rules changes have a lot to do with it.
For example, it is impossible to pass at Monaco. Why? Because the cars are too damn big. Why? I guess because they felt they had to make more room for the stupid "road relavent" batteries.
Why can't cars pass at other tracks and in other forms of racing? Too much turbulence coming off the car in front.
Solution: Drop the amount of aero a huge amount and clean up the air. Make these over-paid professionals go out and drive and earn their money.
Yes, I said Over Paid. Denny Hamlin makes about $15 million dollars a year, not including endorsements. And if he got paid for all the whining he does, he would make over $100 million.
We tend to say that racing was better "back in the old days". Well, in many ways it was.

OK, so why is the interest in viewership dropping in many forms of auto racing? I think part of it is the race fans of previous generations are dying out and not being replaced. Young people today aren't into cars and racing as much as previous generations. When I was young almost all kids were into cars. We had to have a nice, fast or cool car. Today, many young people just want a car for transportation. The kids don't care what it looks like or how fast it is and most don't want to work on cars. They would rather play video games or stare at their phones. Not only are Nascar and Indy car grandstands empty, short tracks around the country are closing up too.

Speaking of which, I had points in my first 3 cars.

Baseball is boring. Hockey is not. Indy 500 - most of the race was boring. Coke 600 - majorly boring. I don't know what you expected out of the 600, but I thought it was the best running in many years and my buddies who were there agreed.

Some of it's my fault for being there instead of watching on TV.

I love how steady the NHRA numbers always are without any drama. When the light turns green, go.
First one to the finish line wins.
