What Merc was expecting Bottas to do was hold Max up through the twisty bits then use that new PU (and all of his saved up battery) to hold him off down the straights. But you have to be a competent driver (please see Alonso vs Hamilton, 2021 Hungarian GP) to pull that off, and that starts with giving a shit. (Please see above)

Bottas is a doormat and will shortly no longer be a Mercedes driver, how is any of this surprising? Mercedes gave him a new engine and sent him to the back of the grid for no good reason other than to get in the way. He doesn't give a $h!T anymore and if I was in his position neither would I. Neither would I, but my point is that even if he did care, VB has overwhelmingly been ineffective wheel to wheel throughout his career, and esp while at Merc, for some reason. No reason to expect the light bulb to come on for him now, esp knowing he won't be there next year. He's a doormat, and always has been. Zebras don't change their stripes.

Not saying it, of course, but implying it. Sochi is an easy to pass high speed track. Dunno what Bottas was supposed to do to stop Max. Yep, that's pretty much what I was thinking. Re: Hill's description of Bottas 'waving Max through', what the fuck did he expect? I mean, how many times have we seen Valterri 'wave through' (insert driver here), esp Lewis?! This is getting common in F1. How many times have we seen Lewis drive through the field and many of the drivers basically pull over for him. Especially some of the MB powered cars.

And the stupid shit continues www.planetf1.com/features/pf1-verdict-george-russell-valtteri-bottas/Maybe, just maybe, Mercedes should not change Bottas engines for shits and like they lead the Constructors Champ. by a million points. Without this dumb move maybe Bottas could have finish second, taking points from Max and extending the lead on the CC

^ Just wait.
Even though Lewis has blown nearly every race start this season and lost multiple places right at the get go. If Max wins the WDC the Brit press will blame Bottas.
Just wait.

Funny thing is now Bottas has two spanking new engines. Will he continue to get new engines everytime he scores pole? He can't with the new budget cap unless Merc is lying about their spending. I don't think Merc can all of a sudden come out and say 'well since he's a Merc driver the engines are 'free' as that's against the sporting regs they signed when they agreed to supply engines to other teams at the designated cost.

And if Lulu wins it they'll tell flowing tails of how the GOAT never needs any help completely forgetting their current point of view.

Motivated or not, new engine or not, he wasn't gonna keep Max behind him for long, because he just isn't very good.

They want Bottas to be a doormat when racing Lewis and brick wall against Max. It doesn't work that way.

Lewis once again validates my opinion that he's easily the luckiest athlete I've ever seen. Hit the wall AND spun out within 5 minutes of each other in qualifying, started on the 2nd row, shitty off the line on Sunday, everyone else came out behind him after slow stops, wanted to stay out but his team made him change tires, rain spins out the leader with 3 laps left. You don't think Max was lucky? Would he have finished second without some luck (and lots of skill)?

Alonso has said many times he probes the track's non-intuitive lines for secret grip. This was one of the things he butted heads with Dennis about "driver equality". Ron wanted Alonso to deliver his secrets on a silver plate so Mclaren could race against him. In this case, he just took the most optimal racing line allowed.
