Why wouldn't teams be getting reports from around the track while sitting under the red flag? They all left the pits for the formation lap with inters when the track was clearly dry. I am surprised that no one had any reports from the track itself. Anyone with reports would have found themselves in first place and not just for that one lap. The drivers can talk to the pits on the formation lap but the pits can't talk back to the drivers, so they do get some info. Lulu's problem was that as 'first' the guy in 2nd just had to slow down a little bit until Lulu was past the solid line and then duck into the pits and Lulu was stuck as there is a point you can't cross the pit entry line without getting a penalty. Usually true but in this case the lap before a standing restart is not considered the same way. All the teams including Mercedes are able to talk between the pits and the driver. Hamilton even reported the track was dry but was told to stay out by the team. The only true formation lap is the one that leaves from the grid before a normal start. If you go back and look the restart was on lap 4 and the cars left pits before that behind the safety car which means it is a safety car lap and counts and not a formation lap.

Where would the cars go if they couldn't pit under the red flag? You let them line up in the pitlane so the crews can put fans on them. Then you release them under yellow but not allow pitstops until after the green.
You know, like every other series does.
I believe NASCAR allows work on the cars as soon as the red flag is lifted and the cars begin their laps under yellow allowing plenty of time for pit stops and repairs.

If they worked on the car under red they should at least go to the rear of the field. Now they repair the car, change tires and keep their position. That just doesn't seem right.
Also, RB has said that engines from both cars have been damaged in the crashes the last two races. Now they will be less one of their three engines on the year and will have to take a penalty if they have to use another. Merc couldn't of planned this better. If engines are damaged in a crash they should be able to be repaired or replaced. I beleived the rule was meant to make engines more reliable for cost savings. The rule makers didn't consider being crashed out by a rival and damaging the engine.

Spa has become a favorite spot to take engine penalties. If the worst happens to both Honda engines and now we can add in Ferrari it might get done right away.

They need to change the rules so that if someone's engine, transmission, etc gets fubar from a different team crashing into them they get to change them without penalties.
Its a joke the crashing team gets a mere slowdown, while the crashed team loses the race and their engine/tranny quota

Without going overboard and creating an excessive blame game situation why not give a wild card option to be used just once in a season? Or put some sort of limitation on how many races a replacement could be used. It would very unequal if an engine was busticated after being used for say 5 or 6 races and then gets replaced by a brand new unit.

If the aftermath of the incident causes multiple teams to change 'covered bits' there will be multiple 'covered bits' penalties assessed against the penalized team. In a cost capped world causing a 'economic incident' has to warrant economic penalties against the offending party.

As I said now you need to cover from someone and if we didn't stop I think Webber probably would have overtaken us, if we stopped we cover from Webber but let Petrov and Rosberg in front so it was a very difficult call I think. It was obviously a tough difficult race. I lost a position at the start and then when the first safety car came out Petrov and Rosberg came in so... We saw some problems with the soft tyres, Webber pitted and then we tried to cover from him. When you cover someone probably you give something away to the others. So it was then a choice between covering Vettel or Petrov and Rosberg, so we covered Webber and then it was difficult to overtake Petrov. The Renault is very quick on the top speed so it was a frustrating race behind him. But this is a sport, this is motor racing. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Championship runner-up Fernando Alonso, summing up his race and his chances of his third championship disappearing.[41]

Yep; FA screwed up. His teammate did not with all that pressure! Of course Hamilton had a lot to lose and FA had little to lose. So you could see Lewis back out a couple of times rather than force it. Smart. This is why he is 7 x WDC and beat FA when they were teammates.
