This event will be NEW to everybody. No team has run this track configuration before and they don't have and real set up data. They do have a lot of surface information, though. Someone can correct me if I am wrong but I would guess that, track to track, that is one of the biggest unknowns.

This event will be NEW to everybody. No team has run this track configuration before and they don't have and real set up data. They have empirical knowledge about 80% of the layout already, and they've probably mapped the rest and have the data fed into the simulators. There really isn't much to the corners connecting the the sections of the GP circuit with turns 7 and 8 being the only ones not taken flat out. This is going to be a DRS and harvesting fest.

I'd damn sure put him in it to gauge Bottas if nothing else. Might be better to put Russel in, that way they can gauge him as well, and hopefully light a fire under Bottas at the same time. On second thought, I agree.

Paul Di Resta At least I wouldn't have to hear his commentary.

They should bring Nico Rosberg back for another win in the Merc.

f1i.com/news/391913-russell-is-leading-contender-to-replace-hamilton-for-sakhir-gp.htmlThis article says Russell is favorite to get the seat. I would like to see Hulk get the opportunity. Its hard to get used to a new car and get it to speed, but the Racing Point car is basically last years Merc so that could help him. He would have the three practices to get the car set to his liking. He might not be able to contend for the win but could get a podium. This race is a big for Bottas because if the sub comes in and does better than him it tells everyone where he stands as a driver.

Might play out to be Bottas' for the taking. Giving a driver the keys to a winning car, who is not familiar enough with it, may not play out the way many would love to see. That would actually play out in Hamilton's favor, for it would show (especially if Bottas doesn't win) that it also takes a great talent to exploit the machine's inherent advantages the way we're accustomed to with Lewis. True, given time and a few races to acclimatize to the Mercedes, it wouldn't surprise to see someone like Hulkenberg or possibly even Russell take the win. Hulk could possibly bring it off this weekend, and if Russell were inserted and wins, that would make for some entertaining driver negotiations at Mercedes.

That hurricane force wind and rain you felt was Stoffel sighing and crying. I feel for him. I mean, this is EXACTLY why you hang around as a reserve driver! This will add some spice to the weekend.

I hope they have a little ceremony with some of the course marshalls ahead of the race. Giving them some public recognition.

Just having the same tools that a craftsman uses to produce his finished product does not make one coming into possession of those tools into that craftsman.

I think George "my favorite dog" Russell is going to tear it up.

How fun that must be to go from what is pretty much the slowest car to what is pretty much the fastest car. Granted, the difference isn't THAT large corner to corner.

I have been racing far to long to believe that the car is the only thing that wins. There are drivers that can win in virtually any POS that meets the rules of the class. There are drivers that can take what appears to be a 'world beater' of a car an make it a also ran. In Bottas we have been viewing a highly skilled driver that doesn't have the skills of his team mate.

The Merc is the inverse of the Williams right now, faster in the corners but slower down the straight, he's probably already felt that difference in the simulator. He's had a test in every Merc at least once for the past 3 seasons on top of a full time race seat, that gave him a clear edge over Merc's backup drivers. I don't think he'll out qually Bottas, wouldn't be surprised if he out raced him though, i predict first points AND a first podium.

In Bottas we have been viewing a highly skilled driver that doesn't have the skills of his team mate. Sorry, Russell is a professional F1 driver, not an also ran. The Mercedes' pace is on average 1 full second faster than the field over the past 8 seasons. Lewis wouldn't be a seven time WDC without that car. Russell has proven himself to be an amazing qualifier. Dragging that Williams dog far up the grid. So much so he has impressed everyone including special praise from Vettel and Alonso. www.gpblog.com/en/news/68456/vettel-feels-sorry-for-russell-not-the-result-he-deserved-.htmlwww.motorsport.com/f1/news/alonso-praise-russell-williams-robson/4902166/What we will see once again is that in F1 the car and engineers are 90+% of the pace. Russell probably has a 30% chance right now of taking pole. If he shows he is fast in practice those chances could rise to 50% or more.
