Just when you thought it was safe to go out, my local health department has issued a legally enforceable (misdemeanor) mask wearing requirement. But it is not so simple. There is this:
Stick a sock in it! Use socks that came out of your washing that lost their 'partner'. The Blue 'shop towels' work admirably for the 'paper filter'.

Anyone caught wearing an N95 or other surgical quality mask who is not in healthcare, while these items are hard to come by for medical personnel, should be shot on sight.

I was over-generalizing. I bought a box of the N95 masks 12 years ago, for the swine flu thing. I have 18 left. Ya want to shoot someone. Shoot yourself. for waiting until the horse has left the barn before ya went to shut the barn door.

Shoot yourself. for waiting until the horse has left the barn before ya went to shut the barn door. My conscience would not allow me to hoard them while medical professionals, some of whom may end up trying to save me, are doing without.
Additionally, the wearing of masks in public with this virus is as much to keep the wearer from infecting others from being infected and asymptomatic as it is about not being infected oneself.
If your N95s have an exhale valve, it is very possible that it does nothing to keep you from infecting others, if you are infected and do not know it yourself. It's also believed that those who are infected and are asymptomatic are the most contagious carriers of the virus.
In short, the bandana and folded paper shop towel insert I use may just do a better job of protecting others from me than your N95s do.

I bought a box of ten (the kind with the exhale flap) ten years ago from Sears Hardware for hanging drywall, dry cutting masonry (gotta watch those silacates), cleaning (I'm very allergic to dust), and only have 3 left. I was using one while I was rehabbing a house when this whole thing started, I usually wash and reuse them until they fall apart so that one's on it's last legs. I gave one of the new ones to my mom and am using the last one for when I go out myself.

mine have no exhale flap or whatever. If my family or friends need one, they'll get it. Like I said, I bought em 11 years back. and I'll have some left when this nonsense happens again in 5 or 10 years from now. and, your statement that anyone who uses a N95 should be shot is total nonsense. As I'm not the only person who bought a box 5 or 10 years back and stored em in the larder for when the apocalypse happens.

But then I have no wish to navigate that brave new world post apocalypse. I've had a great life and if my kids don't survive, I'd rather not.

Most 3M masks have a five year shelf life if in their original packaging.
"The standard shelf life of 3M N95 masks is a maximum of five years from production date. This is also dependent on storage conditions. For example, the masks have to be stored in their original packaging. " www.cemask.com/en/new/new-90-251.html

If you thought buying toilet paper was a challenge, wait until you need to get an appointment for a haircut once the barbers and hair salons reopen!🤣😢😷🥺

Might just let it grow. Have to see how hot I get outside this summer.

It's pretty curly and that's the way it works best, but most of them always wanted to argue with me.
So finally, quite a few years ago, I bought some high-end cordless Wahl clippers with plastic spacer thingies. About 5 minutes every month or two and voila, it's done.

We got our Wahl clippers at Costco about 10 years ago, and I finally got my wife to get brave and start using them on me 5 years ago. With the per clip savings ($25 at the local barber shop), they paid for themselves easily within the first year of use.

I might be able to explain filtration technology and what type of mask will work best. The most effective type of filtration is HEPA which relies on pore size to positively eliminate anything larger than the pore. For respiratory protection, this requires a cartridge respirator or gas mask that is fit tested and the wearer must pass a breathing test. The problem is that the HEPA is very restrictive and some people are not able to draw enough air with their lungs.
Most other masks that I am familiar with use the concept of media filtration. The air is required to pass through multiple layers of fiber. As the air is forced to weave back and forth eventually the particle is caught. The effectiveness of a cloth mask will be improved by using multiple layers of a fabric that is absorbent such as cotton, and making it large enough to provide a wide area. Inserting restrictive materials into the mask could possibly reduce the effectiveness by forcing the air to bypass the fabric and flow around the edges which are not sealed. Multiple layers provide better protection than a single restrictive layer that is not sealed.
The added protection of a N95 mask is that it will prevent the passage in either direction of liquid that is forcefully applied by a cough or sneeze, so it can provide protection in close proximity if it is tightly fitted to prevent edge leaks. A person who needs a N95 should also have goggles or a face shield to protect the eyes.

Let it grow and then donate it to cancer folks That's a good idea. But if I get too hot this summer, it's going to have to come off.

Guys - I just had a great idea. It's the perfect time to resurrect Grand-Am since it never had any fans. Once went to a Grand-Am race at Sonoma attended by 14 people and a goat.
This came to mind since apparently North Carolina wants the Coke 600 run without fans.
