Is Laguna Seca going to go the way of Riverside? The Laguna Seca FolliesWhat was the Monterey County Board thinking? They weren’t – and got bought off cheap. For John Narigi, the new general manager of the Laguna Seca Recreation Area that includes WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca, we must offer our most heartfelt welcome to the business of motor racing, natch. But unfortunately, that is where our optimistic view of the change of guardianship of the track from the Sports Car Racing Association of Monterey Peninsula (SCRAMP) after 57 years of management will end. Who would have thought that the beautiful Monterey Peninsula would have a County Board that resembles a collective of the most corrupt Chicago Aldermen? Last fall, in what was one of the most blatant quid-pro-quo moves that I have seen since moving from the Windy City 10 years ago, the keys to Laguna Seca were handed to, by far, the least-qualified petitioner. Narigi himself made significant donations to key board members, and it has been reported by the Voice of Monterrey Bay that he is under investigation “by the state Fair Political Practices Commission into allegations of campaign money laundering and other possible violations of election law. Among the recipients of the contributions under scrutiny were the campaigns of Monterey County supervisors John Phillips and Chris Lopez. “The complaint to the FPPC raises questions about more than $60,000 in contributions to Phillips and $10,000 to Lopez and additional questions about what could be impermissible coordination of campaign activities by candidates and political action committees in which Narigi has been heavily involved.” journal.classiccars.com/2020/07/10/the-laguna-seca-follies/?fbclid=IwAR1WDE7wSt2yhou0N9eZljwmnrUWF79Zoge50jcmfvDn4o9icbIUxf3Cdco

I hope it doesn't go that way. Riverside was a world class course. Everyone who was anyone raced there. There's a 'Remembering Riverside' Facebook page that has so much traffic it's not funny. I don't want to ever see a 'Remembering Laguna Seca' page. Never.

Someone just needs to buy Laguna Seca from the County and make it private property. Probably the best chance for survival and for investment into the facility--as a race track, and not real estate or a shopping center.

Probably the best chance for survival and for investment into the facility--as a race track, and not real estate or a shopping center. You can't just jump and click your heels and make that happen. There was a group a few years bck that wanted to but were turned down, ed by Bruce Canepa and one of the Waltons.
The problem is that it's a money losing proposition without the volunteers, so they're trying to alienate them to make it a bigger loser, making it easier to develop.
PS ... I LOLd at 'someone just needs to buy ' ... well, step right up.
A few years ago, when an interim contract was awarded to SCRAMP, there were other players. My pick was a group called “Friends of Laguna Seca” headed by Bruce Canepa. He had a group of very wealthy and powerful racer types, such as Walmart heir Rob Walton, who were ready to inject millions upon millions of dollars into the success of the track.

Unfortunately, this is just one of those things that reminds me that either, one, government (local, state, federal, etc) tend to fuck up damn near everything they touch, or two, the people who run the show are self serving pricks most of the effin' time. On the latter point, it's just like my father told me when I was younger, the government as an institution in and of itself isn't the problem, it's the assholes who comprise it.
And I'm betting that the county, to keep Laguna Seca as is, probably wants an exorbitant price compared to what the US Army got when they sold the property to them.

Foo Fighters just sent me an email informing me that their US leg of their 2020 Van Tour has been canceled. This makes me so sad. Not because I am not going to get to see them in October, but I thought they would postpone to 2021 like they did with their European dates. I had such great seats for the Cleveland show too.
Wear your fucking masks, assholes!🤬 We could end this a lot quicker if we stop acting like self-entitled douche bags.
2020 has been a complete waste....

Observation. I think double stuff Oreos now have less cream filling than they used too. Maybe 25% less cream. In order to get back to old style double stuffs, you need to buy their mega stuffs.

Just finished watching a documentary called "Crash and Burn" on Amazon Prime. Story about Tommy Bryne who raced with Theodore in F1 back in 1982. Fascinating character who is a driving instructor these days out at Mid-Ohio. If people thought James Hunt was wild...😳

Wasn't Laguna Seca deeded to the county as a part of Fort Ord as a part of the base closing initiative back in the 80's. I believe there are strings attached to property received as a part of military base closings.

All I know about that is that the US Army (who owned the property up to that point) sold it to the county, either before there was a Laguna Seca Raceway, or soon after. Which that judgement on my part is from the fact that I don't see a race track sprouting up there while the US Armed Forces/US Government owned the property.

If I remember correctly - quite a number of the early (after WW II) races/tracks were conducted on military property. Sebring was a Army Air Force training base and some of the original 1940's concrete runway/taxi ways are still in use on the active race track.
