Better to dump, than be dumped.

I am going to guess that Honda has another upgrade in the works and Red Bull has seen that data. I would not be surprised if The engineers at Red Bull know what their lap times would have been quicker with the Honda in Canada.

You have to wonder what will happen to the Red Bull cry for an affordable alternative engine.

You have to wonder what will happen to the Red Bull cry for an affordable alternative engine. When they are finishing behind Force India Andretti and Renault I will have only one thing to say.
Neener, neener.

Neener, neener. Quite possibly that could happen. In the real world it is a fact that McLaren are now paying Honda to supply Red Bull with an engine. e5289320

Honda has scored a great deal.
I doubt Red Bull made the decision without tripple checking the engine. They probably know more about engines than your averag customer team. Their Tag Heuer engine is not 100% Renault.

Their Tag Heuer engine is not 100% Renault. Red Bull's made out best on this deal, they're right back where they were during their championship years with a (paying) factory deal. Honda on the other hand will have to prove that at the very least they're good enough to slip in a few wins per season like Renault (Tag) has, that (IMHO) still probably won't be enough to stop RedBull from courting VAG for a post 2019 deal.

I've never read anything to suggest that the Renault engines are modified and quite frankly, I can't see reason for Renault to give a customer access to enough information to allow them to build any modifications.
