I keep looking for a report about IndyCar doing some kind of investigation into the incident and considering a penalty on Sato. So far, nothing but crickets.

Indy Car has assessed a post-race review on Sato for avoidable contact, whatever that means.
It sounds like they are deciding what kind of punishment, if any, to hand down.

I'm sorry folks not watching this race until I checked in this afternoon.
What Sato did is really scaring me.
2nd time in a row drivers don't settle the hell down on the first few laps of a 200 lap / 500 mile race and already wrecking at the backstretch before the long pond turn?

The aero package is garbage at Indy and Pocono. RHR said track position is critical at Pocono. The only way to do it is at the initial start of the race. So, guys are taking stupid risks on the opening lap. These cars just do not race at those two places well.
I listened to a Marshall Pruett podcast recently and on it was Bourdais's engineer, Craig Hampson. He had some interesting things to say about the current Dallara and its aero kit. He said the car is incredibly difficult to set up. He said the aerodynamics of this car is extremely simplistic. He said the undertray of the old Lola's that ran in CART in the early 2000's was far more advanced than today's car. He said the reason for that is the old Lola was designed in the wind tunnel, this current car was not. That blew my mind. Indy Car commissioned Dallara to design and build this latest car on the cheap. Owners didn't want to spend $750K or a million on a new chassis so that is what they did. Dallara did some CFD simulations and rolled with the results of that. DW12 never saw the wind tunnel. Think about that. Hampson says he hopes the new chassis for 2022(?) is designed in the wind tunnel. It will make an engineer's job a lot easier to sort out and set up a car.

That incar is wierd. It looks like he just started to angle to the left and then changed his mind and angled right and then just lost it. I mean by the point of contact the car was already at an angle that would have sent the car into the infield if Rossi hadn't been there. I can only conclude that he just got all crossed up there. Not a good look for such an experienced driver

The reason behind minimal fencing where there aren't seats is two fold. Fencing is cheap and you don't have to protect people behind it. For Pocono, if the walls were raised to 8 or 9 feet above the outer track surface that would eliminate cars 'hooking' the fencing...at what cost to the facility, I don't know.

Everyone who was there says attendance has been increasing since it came back. Despite the complete lack of an undercard (why we don't go). But from all indications, certain car owners want the ovals gone. I've seen several sources say they block adding ovals. If Pocono can't get support series to race there, why not build a dirt track in the infield? Run the Pennsylvania Posse and Tony Stewart's All Star series on Friday and Saturday night. Get Lights to run on Saturday, and you have a heck of a race weekend. Sounds better than only going there every three years. Because that'll build a fan base. The series wants to stay in the north east. What about Loudon? It's not big and scary like Pocono. Watkins Glen? The Meadowlands parking lot is still there.

^ If that's the case there are three possible scenarios that immediately come to mind. Maybe you can think of more.
1) Something broke on the car or a tire rapidly lost pressure
2) They had one of those extreme oval setups where the car constantly pulls left and you have to constantly steer right on a straight
3) Sato's "seam" story where beads of track sealer took over control of the car (or some wacky aero effect?)
The first is plausible, but nobody has claimed that. If it's the second, it was like that from the get go and it didn't suddenly jump into that mode unless reason 1. Besides, Pocono isn't really that kind of track. The third is bullshit. I have enough motorcycle road miles to have experienced that kind of thing (and the grating on a long draw bridge can be downright frightening), but in a car I have a hard time believing it would cause such a drastic change of direction. Even at those speeds.
I would prefer that they just dumped the place and went back to Phoenix. The weather is almost always good and it's a cool track that is also much safer.

Seeing the teams are rolling into Gateway today, I think it is safe to say Sato is racing Saturday night. The drivers meeting should be quite entertaining!

I've just been watching the video over on Youtube. The replays start at around 3:36 and Sato's car clearly makes a move to the left. They can argue about what caused it to make the move, but move it did.

First hour or so of Marshall Pruett's podcast today analyzes the crash.
1. Track not to blame, drivers make poor decisions.
2. Knows some engineers who have seen the data traces (need to listen to the podcast about how that works, super fascinating stuff) and who have said that Sato was steering left at time of impact.
3. Talked to driver who runs good at Pocono who said that if one of Sato's rear tires hit the track seam (the one that Sato was using as evidence to defend himself), it would cause his car to start to rotate. This driver said he always stays off the seams at Pocono.
4. Sato using the seam as evidence to clear himself and blame Rossi is not going perfectly straight so it is misleading. Went as far to say that sort of evidence would never hold in a court of law.
5. Said RHR had some room to his left but not very much. Said his margin of error was damn near zero. Sato on the other hand....
6. Look at the video. How much room is there between Sato's car and the wall? A hell of a lot more room than RHR had. Questioned why Sato needed to run that close to Rossi (I said to stay in Dixon's slipstream who was directly ahead of him at the time).
7. Said when he attended a driving school he was taught that it was the responsibility of the overtaking driver to complete a pass cleanly and safely. If not and a crash ensues, then it is the fault of the overtaking driver.
8. Says Indy Car needs to send a strong message to the drivers. Sato is the one who triggered the wreck, he said a very harsh punishment needs handed down to him to get the drivers' attention. He said Sato should be suspended, probably two races.

PR damage control. Same data analyzed by others suggests opposite. RLLR is bracing for a suspension for Sato. Indy Car has already nicked Sato for avoidable contact. Penalty has not been announced yet. My guess is Sato will be suspended for Portland. Not doing it for Gateway because Rahal is probably telling Indy Car that he can't get a sub on this short of notice and RLLR has committed two cars for every race. My guess is Daly will get the call for Portland since he doesn't have an Indy Car drive lined up for that weekend. Just my 2 cents and what my crystal ball is telling me.🤣

Pocono is built in the middle of a nature reserve and with the housing development that's been done in the past 40 years or so I don't think they have the leeway to to many large projects on the grounds. What they need to do is promote the race better in the Philly metro area, I know exactly when Dover is coming around because it's advertised a month ahead. I gotta come HERE to find out when Pocono is run.
