![](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/D1TNv2TX4AAbml_.jpg) MotoGP riders powerless in Qatar start time row – Crutchlow gianni MotorSports March 10, 2019 Crashes in pre-season testing at Losail led to concerns that the 8pm local time race start would be dangerous because the falling night temperatures cause dew to build up on track. After initially hinting that reverting to the 2018 schedule of a 7pm race start was on the cards, MotoGP promoter Dorna elected to stick to the planned timetable and then rejected a further push from riders to bring the start forward following Friday night’s Safety Commission meeting. “It’s so strange, you don’t really understand the condition when you’re riding around, you know it’s cold but it can change lap upon lap,” said Crutchlow. “What’s going on is: we don’t make the rules. I think we’ve been quite strong with them with regards to what we want, but at the end of the day we can’t change it and we can’t do anything. “What can we do? If you’re going to sit down and everyone said ‘OK, we’re not racing’, there’ll always be three people who will race, and they’ll be on the podium. And that’s the way it is. If one guy goes out of pitlane, the rest will go out of pitlane. “I don’t think the conditions are good enough at eight o’clock, but I don’t make the rules.” World champion Marc Marquez said MotoGP was “taking a risk that is not necessary” by starting the race at 8pm. Marquez was one of the many riders caught out by the evening conditions on Saturday. He fell during the fourth practice session that precedes qualifying, as did Alex Rins, Bradley Smith and Johann Zarco. Zarco then crashed again in qualifying, where Jorge Lorenzo, Tito Rabat and Jack Miller joined the list of riders to have accidents on Saturday evening. Of those crashes, all bar Marquez’s happened at Turn 2 – which Aprilia rider Aleix Espargaro said as the most treacherous spot. “Corner two is unbelievable – it is ice,” he said. “You brake and it doesn’t matter how slow you approach the corner, you have to be really careful.” Espargaro said it would have been “super helpful” if the race time had been brought forward and explained that wind was causing as many problems as the temperatures themselves. “It is a mix because this wind makes the tyre more cold,” he said. “Even if the track temperature is not super-low, with the wind it’s maybe worse. “Sometimes it is better to have a little cooler track but no wind.”

2019 Qatar Moto3 Race Result: First Race, First Record Zara Daniela on Sun, 2019-03-10
At the end of a long long winter riders lined up on the grid for the first battle of the season in the scenic sunset of Qatar. 18 frantic laps later, the Losail circuit crowned the first Japanese rider to win in the Moto3 class, Kaito Toba recovering from a poor start to take the checkered flag in prime position. The Asia Talent Cup recruit snatched the win from Lorenzo Dalla Porta by five hundredths of a second, with poleman Canet completing the podium.
Canet had an excellent launch to show the way on lap one but it was Dalla Porta who started lap two in the lead courtesy of a generous slipstream. Another winner on lap one was Toni Arbolino, who joined top three positions after a second row start. On the other hand, front row starter Toba got swamped by the pack at the start and could not take advantage of his excellent grid position. Another star of practice, Romano Fenati, had to make do with an already poor starting position and an even poorer start that dropped him to 17th place by the end of lap one. But the Italian quickly got into the groove with fastest laps to recover ground on the leaders and was up into the top ten by lap four.
Back at the front, the early shenanigans between Dalla Porta, Canet, Arbolino and Albert Arenas allowed a pack of 15 pursuers to tag along and threaten for the lead. The group included resurgent Toba, who had slipped out of the limelight on lap one but ended up leading the way by lap six. With Arenas and Arbolino fading from the spotlight, it was Toba and Antonelli’s turn to challenge Canet and Dalla Porta but Fenati started feeling left out and made his way to the front by the end of lap nine.
Despite 15 men still hanging onto the lead group, the only riders showing their speed at the mid point of the race were Toba, Fentati, Canet and Dalla Porta, with the likes of Vietti, Antonelli, Arenas, McPhee or Ramirez biding their time a couple tenths of a second behind. The lead repeatedly changed hands between the four keen men up front, Fenati dazzling with his corner speed but slipstream toning down every intention to escape.
In the final five laps, some other faces wanted airtime, Ramirez in particular snatching the lead having started 20th on the grid. Meanwhile, Fenati got a track limits warning which he appeared to misread and unnecessarily took the long penalty line, which brought him out in 13th position, at the end of the lead group with four laps remaining.
With Fenati on a mission to fight through the heart of the pack, Dalla Porta resumed the lead and fought to keep Toba, Canet and Ramirez at a safe distance. The Italian led as the pack was starting the final lap but Toba flew past and held firm until the final sector, when Dalla Porta had another go and gambled on leading out of the final turn. However, Toba let him pass and patiently slipstreamed his way to the line for the record breaking win. With Dalla Porta and Canet filling in the podium, Ramirez had to settle for fourth, ahead of an excellent fifth for Vietti. Arenas, Raul Fernandez, Antonelli, Fenati and Jakub Kornfeil rounded out the top ten but would have been disappointed with being so close yet so far from the podium.
Toba’s victory makes him the first leader in the championship standings, with Dalla Porta and Canet getting their campaigns to a decent start as well.

It says much that Cal Crutchlow thanked two surgeons and his physiotherapist in the brief post-race interview. This week was only his third time on the LCR race bike this year for an interview that apparently involved almost 20 fractures

Was told by technical director Danny Aldridge at the test that it’s not illegal though, as it’s mounted on the swing arm not the fairing David Emmett This is exactly what I heard from Danny Aldridge too. 2019 Qatar MotoGP Race Result: A Magnificent Deja Vu Zara Daniela on Sun, 2019-03-10
The floodlights of Qatar raised the bar early for every other race on the calendar after a masterpiece reminiscent of 2018 but closer and tighter, the classic final corner showdown matched by the closest top 15 in the history of the premier class. Andrea Dovizioso made sure to keep Losail as Ducati’s playground but Marc Marquez gave his absolute best to prevent that and came within two hundredths of a second a victory that has eluded him since 2014. Dovizioso came out as the winning party of yet another final lap spectacle against the world champion, while Cal Crutchlow’s confidence was boosted by a podium in his first race back from serious injury.
The race had drama even before it started, Fabio Quartararo stalling on the line on the warm up lap and swapping a second row start to a pitlane one. Back on the main piece of tarmac, Dovizioso’s mythical holeshot device seemed to be working perfectly, the Italian robbing poleman Maverick Vinales into turn one. The Yamaha man started going backwards already and his dreams of an early escape ended up in sixth place by the end of lap one. Marquez held station in third after the start, behind Jack Miller and with the fellow Hondas of Cal Cructhlow and Takaaki Nakagami waiting to bite. While Vinales was still finding his feet, both Suzukis made it past him, Joan Mir ahead of Alex Rins and Danilo Petrucci dragging a fast starting Valentino Rossi into the top ten. Back at the front, Marquez kept Miller busy but the battle was decided when Miller got distracted by his seat pad coming lose and dropped back to 11th place.
It looked like the calm before the storm at the front, Dovizioso leading Marquez within two tenths of each other while the Suzukis were storming past Crutchlow. Rins went a step further and was attacking Marquez by the middle of lap five. Like Quartararo was demonstrating some 20 positions behind, the leading group was biding its time about two seconds off race pace, but Rins was not all that patient and attacked for the lead for the first time at the end of lap five. Dovizioso easily resumed position on the straight while Marquez, Mir, Crutchlow and Petrucci patiently followed. Vinales was stuck in seventh and being hunted down by teammate Rossi and apprentice Franco Morbidelli. Rins and Marquez started harassing each other for the next few laps, while Petrucci also got a taste for overtakes a couple places behind but Mir was not making life easy for the Italian.
By lap eighth, Rins was briefly back in the lead but his ambitions seemed to be using up more tyre than the veteran championship contenders around him. While Dovizioso and Rins were keen to show the way and kept exchanging positions, Marquez appeared to be playing the waiting game in third, at least while Mir and Petrucci didn’t show much initiative. That changed on lap ten, when Petrucci pulled a clinical move on the world champion, demoting him to fourth, prompting the Spaniard into showing some enthusiasm. The Honda getting the better of the Ducati on the straight of all places and then block passed Rins soon after.
The pace was starting to warm up at the halfway mark of the race, frontrunners dipping into the 1:55s, Dovizioso and Marquez finding a half second gap on Petrucci, Rins and Crutchlow. Mir was another stone’s throw away, trailed by three Yamahas, Vinales ahead of Rossi and Morbidelli but the trio looked to be losing touch with the podium battle in the final ten laps.
Back at the front, Dovizioso’s stopped testing the opposition and slowed down once again, backing Marquez into Rins, Petrucci, and Crutchlow, creating the illusion that Mir and the factory Yamahas still had a word to say in the podium configuration. The Italian’s plan made it an eight-man lead group once again, Rins like a puppy persistently biting at Marquez’s slippers in the battle for second, while Petrucci and Crutchlow were replicating that just behind. Their next problem was Rossi, who made it past Vinales and Mir in quick succession and edged closer to the top five.
Timesheets went red with four laps remaining, the lead group reduced to six as Vinales and Mir lost touch by a second while Dovizioso and Marquez prepared for one of their classics at the front, if Crutchlow, Rins, Petrucci and Rossi were not going to disagree. Vinales did wake up in the final three laps to post his fastest times but it was too little too late to make an impact on the podium.
A mistake from Dovizioso in turn six on the penultimate lap made the decision on when to attack for Marquez and the Spaniard turned into the mouse rather than the cat. However, Tom got one back over Jerry at the final visit into turn one, when the Ducati fired past the Honda. The final lap was riddled with slides and wiggles for Marquez but the world champion held on for the last corner showdown, the two rivals crossing the finish line side by side. Crutchlow’s stoic defence of third place almost got overshadowed by the Qatar 2018 replica up front, while Rins must be disappointed to miss out on the podium. Rossi’s breathtaking charge to fifth brought him only six tenths of a second away from victory.
After shining in practice, Petrucci looked most glum after finishing sixth but not as disappointed as the poleman, Vinales crossing the line seventh. Mir was ninth and five seconds off the win in his MotoGP debut, while Takaaki Nakagami and Aleix Espargaro completed the top ten. A bit lower down the order but still into the points was Lorenzo in 13th place on his Honda debut, while Quartararo just missed out on points after his admirable recovery job.
Dovizioso leaves Qatar as the championship leader, while Marquez will be hoping for revenge in more ways than one in Argentina.
