Haase Puts Audi On Pole For California 8 Hours By SPEED SPORT Staff - October 27, 2018
MONTEREY, Calif. – The penultimate day of action at the Intercontinental GT Challenge California 8 Hours at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca decided the starting grid for Sunday’s eight-hour endurance event. At the wheel of the No. 29 Audi Sport Team Land car, Christopher Haase claimed the pole for the California 8 Hours, the final round of the Intercontinental GT Challenge season. At the end of the 15-minute Pole Shootout, Haase proved to be .068 of a second quicker than Raffaele Marciello in the No. 43 Mercedes-AMG Team Strakka Racing car. Dries Vanthoor (No. 19 Audi Sport Team WRT R8) was third fastest. The top-10 cars competing in the Pole Shootout were separated by less than half a second. “Once I got on track, I knew what pace was needed to get to the front, so that helped,” said Haase. “As this is an 8-hour race, pole position is not that important. But as we saw last year, when we were also on pole, it is much more comfortable during the opening hours of the race. It is quite tricky to overtake on the Laguna Seca Raceway, so to start at the sharp end of the pack makes our lives easier.” With the Pole Shootout an exclusive GT3 affair, pole positions in the other categories were decided during the three qualifying sessions on Saturday morning. In GTC, the No. 6 US RaceTronics Lamborghini shared by Taylor Proto, Richard Antinucci and 15-year-old Stephen Aghakhani was quickest. The GT4 pole position went to the No. 51 Team Panoz Racing Avezzano of Preston Calvert, Mathew Keegan and Ian James, while TCR honors were taken by the No. 99 Bryan Herta Autosport Hyundai of Mason Filippi, Sean Quinlan and Gregory Liefooghe.
