26.10.2018 RED BULL KTM FURTHER ENHANCE MOTOGP FUTURE WITH TWO-YEAR DANI PEDROSA Dani Pedrosa, who recently turned 33 and announced his retirement from MotoGP at the Grand Prix of Germany in July, will take his first steps as a test and development rider to support the Red Bull KTM project for the next two years. Pit Beirer (Motorsports Director KTM Group): “To have a rider of Dani’s skill and experience as part of our MotoGP project is another strong sign that we are moving in the right direction and we are still pushing as hard as we can. We have seen how competitive MotoGP is this year and how fractions of a second can sometimes hide real progress and valuable lessons. We hope – and we are very excited – that Dani’s input alongside Mika Kallio and feeding into the two teams we’ll have on the grid next year will really help to close the gap even further. I think we can feel very optimistic about our possibilities for the upcoming seasons. I’d like to thank the whole crew at the factory, all the strong effort at the races and for all those testing miles as we come close to the end of our second year. Also to Dani: it is great that he believes and trusts in us and what we are doing.” Mike Leitner (Team Manager MotoGP): “I’m super-happy that we could reach this agreement with Dani. Thanks to all his years and success in MotoGP I believe he will help our project in a big way and in developing the bike. Dani is a three time world champion and three time runner-up in this category and I know him well from the time working together. He is still very competitive and this can only benefit our MotoGP effort.” The Spaniard boasts over 30 MotoGP wins (more than 50 in all classes), 3 world titles and has more than 110 MotoGP podium appearances. His presence and insight will bring an essential added benefit to the work done by Mika Kallio, who has been part of the MotoGP programme since the very beginning. Pedrosa’s influence will be keenly felt as the factory will have four KTM RC16s on the grid for 2019 in the hands of Pol Espargaro and Johann Zarco in the Red Bull KTM Factory Racing team and then Miguel Oliveira and Hafizh Syahrin for the Tech 3 squad.

The Importance Of Test Riders- KTM's Mike Leitner On Why Size Matters David Emmett on Tue, 2018-05-01
Test riders are one of the most crucial elements of success for any modern MotoGP team. As testing has been restricted for the factory riders, to cut costs and make a more level playing field for the smaller manufacturers in MotoGP, the importance of having a genuinely fast test rider has grown. In the past, test riders would be 3 seconds off the pace of the factory riders. Now, test riders have to be capable of worrying the multi-million dollar faces of the factory, and making onlookers wonder why other teams or factories haven't signed them up to a permanent contract.
The reasons behind this shift are fascinating. Over the next couple of weeks, we will have a series of interviews with factory bosses on how important their test riders have been to the development programs of KTM, Suzuki, and Ducati. We will round off the series with an interview with Michele Pirro, the unsung hero of Ducati's test program, and the man who did most of the donkey work to get the Desmosedici GP18 where it is today.
We start off with KTM MotoGP team boss Mike Leitner, however. The Austrian was brought in to lead KTM's MotoGP project from the very beginning, after a brief period away from racing when he left the Repsol Honda team, where he had been crew chief for Dani Pedrosa. Leitner was instrumental in driving the direction of the KTM RC16, and was responsible for recruiting Mika Kallio as a test rider, after the Finnish rider was left without a Moto2 ride at the end of 2015.
Kallio has proved both invaluable as a test rider, and as quick as factory riders Pol Espargaro and Bradley Smith, even coming close to taking Smith's ride in the factory team for the 2018 season. So Leitner's choice of a fast test rider has been justified. I spoke to him about at the combined MotoGP and WorldSBK test at Jerez last November.
Q: What exactly do you need from a test rider?
Mike Leitner: Of course one part is to do the job, to run the bike at a certain speed, to see if the parts keep the performance for a certain amount of kilometers and safety. This is one part of being a test rider, but in our case we also have Mika[Kallio] in this project from the beginning, and he also brought the speed. He was a Moto2 rider, but over these two years he really developed himself again into a MotoGP rider. So it was good for him, and it was good for us.
Especially in the first year, where you have more durability runs and just to make a bike with consistent pace and all these things, he was still a Moto2 rider. But when Bradley [Smith] and Pol [Espargaro] jumped in and they saw the way he was riding, they had good conversations, and he was able to check the data how these MotoGP bikes are now used by these top riders, and he adapted super well, and this was good for the project.
Q: Is it more important to have good technical ability, and explain well, or to be fast?
ML: It must be a combination. Of course, the rider has to really tell you when you give him different things, I mean, he has to be able to tell you the difference. Whatever you find out from these comments, this is up to the technicians. But of course a rider who does the same lap time with three different swingarms, and he cannot really tell you the difference, he is not a good test rider, this is clear.
Q: You also have to be fast enough?
ML: Of course! I mean, not all test riders can do that. Like Ducati with [Michele] Pirro, I think they have a very good test rider also. And when we started the project, this was also one part of our project, to get somebody who can ride a bike fast. And Mika can ride fast and he can also give comments, and this is a very nice combination. And when he did the wildcards, he proved it, so this is also nice for the GP riders.
Q: The Japanese factories don't really have a fast test rider under contract. Are they at a disadvantage?
ML: I don't think so. They have many years of experience and they have all the resources to have a fast test rider.
Q: So it was more necessary for you to have a fast test rider?
ML: I think so, yes. I mean, a test rider will always be important, but especially at the beginning of a project where you really have to set out the direction and find good directions, it was even more important to have a good test rider like Mika. When you already have a winning bike like Honda, Yamaha, they have been winning championships, so it's difficult to find a test rider who can help a Marc Márquez or help a Valentino Rossi, because they are the fastest riders. So it's difficult. Because if anybody was as fast as them, he would be racing also, he would be a MotoGP rider.
Q: Is it hard to find a rider who is fast enough but not racing?
ML: Of course, it's very hard. I mean, when we started to work with Mika, in the paddock, I have to say, not many people had any interest in him. So his Moto2 career was at an end, and he had no chance to go to MotoGP. And for me, he was always a very good rider, because his size, his body size, you have to be a very sensitive rider, because he is smaller. So I though OK, let's talk to him and maybe he is interested, and we can bring him in the project. And for him it was nice and possible.
Q: That's an interesting comment about body size. You worked with Dani Pedrosa, who is also small. Does having a smaller body make Kallio understand the bike better?
ML: Yes. When I watched him in Moto2, he was already riding the bikes with a lot of technique. So most of these riders have a very good feeling for a bike, a good understanding. And Mika is one of them.

KTM Confirm Two-Year Test Rider Deal With Dani Pedrosa David Emmett on Fri, 2018-10-26
It had been widely trailed, and long expected, but KTM have finally confirmed that Dani Pedrosa has agreed to be a test rider for the Austrian factory for the next two seasons. Pedrosa will take on the role alongside current test rider Mika Kallio.
Rumors that Pedrosa would take on a testing role with KTM have been circulating for some time, ever since it became clear that Pedrosa would not be part of the Repsol Honda team. The Spaniard had been linked to the Petronas Yamaha seat as well, but in the end, he felt that some of the joy had gone out of racing, and he didn't feel he had the intensity to keep racing beyond the end of this year.
That KTM should sign Pedrosa as a test rider is not that surprising. Mike Leitner, KTM's MotoGP team manager, was Pedrosa's crew chief with Repsol Honda up until 2014, after which Leitner left to work on KTM's MotoGP project. Leitner knows Pedrosa extremely well, and has spoken highly of his sensitivity to the bike.
This familiarity with Pedrosa was one reason Leitner signed Mika Kallio as a test rider. In an interview with MotoMatters earlier this year, Leitner explained that smaller riders, like Pedrosa and Kallio, have to have a better feeling for the bike, as they cannot compensate with their body weight for what the bike is doing. Kallio "was already riding the bikes with a lot of technique," Leitner told me. "So most of these [smaller] riders have a very good feeling for a bike, a good understanding." Leitner and KTM will hope that Pedrosa's sensitivity to changes will help them push the project forward.
Of course, that is also a risk. Pedrosa has struggled this year to get heat into the Michelin tires, which has prevented him from being competitive at most tracks. KTM may have a little more say in which tires they request from Michelin, but it makes most sense that Pedrosa should try to develop the bike for the tires Michelin will be bringing to the race.
The role as test rider will almost certainly not include any wildcard appearances. At the Red Bull Ring this year, KTM's head of motorsports Pit Beirer told reporters that having Mika Kallio do so many wildcards had not had the positive effect they had hoped. "This was also not very positive for the project, because when the test team starts to think too much like a race team and they want to race, you find out at the test they just want to get ready for next weekend," Beirer said. "Like, the most stupid parts, that also need to be tested, they don’t do them because they focus on the race and then you start to drift away from the job of the test team. All these things we have to learn, being new in this class, so we will not see - maybe only one or no wild-cards from our test team in the future. That's already clear."
The move marks a remarkable departure for Dani Pedrosa, however. The Spaniard has been with Honda for his entire career, even before he entered Grand Prix racing. Moving to KTM means he will lose a role as brand ambassador for Honda, but by going to KTM, he will remain with Red Bull, who have also backed him throughout his career.

Mat Oxley Great that Kork Ballington is a MotoGP Legend. Shoulda been a while back, but he's a quiet guy who's not on the scene, so I guess he got forgotten. Not many riders win 4 world titles in 2 years! And he rode the first GP bike with traction control, the KR500 (the TC was hopeless). Kork would've won a 5th world title in 1980, but he nearly died, cos a bit of broken bone perforated his gut, which went gangrenous. @stavros6 stole an ambulance to get him to a hospital that understood the problem & operated immediately, otherwise it coulda been curtains.

Mat Oxley
That's Marquez, Crutchlow, Nakagami all down today. The Honda has a very particular front end (which is why they nearly always run Michelin's hardest front), which makes things tricky when the track's cold & there's not much grip , which is PI now, especially in right-handers
Neil Spalding
Looks like @hrc_MotoGP have more carbon swingarms in stock... @marcmarquez93 increasingly uses them during the first day of practice.. earlier this year they only came out in FP4... Honda didn’t want their new parts damaged while Marc ‘found the limits’ in the earlier sessions.
