This sport has become such a mess, I'm not even sure they could find their way back if they tried. Longest Daytona 500 ever, and nobody even knew who had won at the end.

Do you suppose the drivers have figured out it's not a good idea to just keep pushing and pushing and pushing until you wreck the guy in front of you? They aren't smart and they don't care. Called it. I'll toot my own horn here. Not a single soul on this earth should be surprised at the world class display of talent we saw. It was going very well for most of the race but the clowns will be clowns and the idiots deserve a dunce cap.
However, I will give Jimmie Johnson and Travis Pastrana a pass. They were doing very well both of them. Until the clowns were clowns.
Congrats to Stenhouse and JTG for the W.

Everything about the last 10 laps of that race fits perfectly into the resctricted racing pattern and was utterly predictable. In fact, my kid & I did predict it.

Yeah I live through the shitshow and keep telling myself the REAL racing starts next week. It's a shame the crown jewel is always run in this crap shoot.
The worst part was listening to the billies complaining about LA Coliseum for weeks and how they couldn't wait for them to go to Daytona. "They never should have moved that race out of Daytona." And the eventual "NASCAR needs to get back to its routes (spelling doesn't count I guess)". "Oh, you mean racing on short tracks and a few football stadiums? Those 'routes'"? Y'all
Oh well, 8 more races until the next "plate" derby.

I watched the last few laps that took place after the last few laps of the regular scheduled distance, and I was quickly reminded why I don’t watch plate races. I cannot wait until the real season starts next weekend.

FOX is still blurring the digital dash for some ungodly reason. Everyone runs the same stuff. I guess the teams are paying FOX to hide nothing.
The race up until Suarez spun out wasn't terrible, it was good. Yes, you had your bumper cars and but it was fine. I guess last year's Dega race was one of those once-in-a-blue-moon Superspeedway races that are actually worth watching from start to finish without 80% of the field being taken out.

The Daytona 525 - my mistake it was actually the Daytona 530 as they ran 212 laps.

That race was just flat out boring for the most part. Yes, green flag pit stops did mix things up a bit, just one more reason to not allow caution pit stops unless you caused the caution. But every one knew there would be a "big one" and every one knew there would be an overtime. So sad. I do not find that exciting to say the least. The Xfinity race was more exciting but I really do not know why.
You know NASCAR has a golden opportunity to get a lot of viewers, but races like this are not going to suck people in, they just aren't.

I'd really like to see a Daytona 500 RACE. Not the bumper cars 530.
You should NOT have 30 out 40 cars on the lead lap entering Overtime. With the current restrictors and car configuration there is no real spreading out of the field.

Only way that's going to happen is if you cause the drivers to have to lift or brake for the corners. But short of taking the banking out of the turns or taking all the aero and/or tire off the cars, I don't see that happening. Hell, Indy Car managed to do that for the ovals and their racing improved, both from a safety standpoint as well as the action.

The essence of racing is for the car to have more power than the tires can grip the track with. The best driver is the one the gets the most power with the most grip most of the time. Feature the restrictor plates should be removed and the cars given Formula V section 5 inch wide tire. RACE ON! |

I really do hope Travis does try Speedweeks one more time. I know he said that if Niece called him he would drive but I really hope he tries for the 500 again.

Good: a (reasonably) likable winner in Stenhouse, we got to see JJ and Pastrana do well
Bad: superspeedway aero package is abysmal, the slam-draft-crash of every last lap is annoying, Truck pole speed topped Cup pole speed
