Me and my sons are set to go to the Indy 500 this year. We’ll be staying all night the night before, and driving home (Cleveland, Ohio area) after the race. We have general admission tix.
What should we know about attending the race?
Ive been told it takes five hours to get to Indianapolis, five hours to get into the Speedway, five hours for the race, five hours to get out of the Speedway, and five hours to get home. Is that accurate?
What are the decent general admission sections? What suggestions do you who have gone have for us rookies?
We’ve been to Cleveland, Mid Ohio, and Detroit so far. I’m certain this is a whole new experience in every way.

After the race, take your time, if you can, and leave 2-3 hours after the race and you can get out pretty quickly. We would tailgate after the race also. As far as GA, not sure, I was usually on the front stretch. You can bring drinks and food in also, and that will help save some money. Not sure what the limits are for coolers, but I’ve seen some decent size ones.

When we went, we stayed up in Fishers the night before and drove in around 8am to the track. No traffic whatsoever. Took about 30 minutes. There was so little traffic that I thought I had gone the wrong way at some point. We parked in the neighborhood for free. We sat in the car and watched Monty Python & the Holy Grail on Netflix, because we had plenty of time to kill at that point. and then walked about 15 minutes to IMS.
After the race, we stayed for about 30 minutes, then walked back to the car and started the trek out of town. I tried to outsmart the traffic flow and take a shortcut that turned out to be a longcut, and it still only took us about 30 minutes to get out of the traffic and moving about 70 mph on the freeway.
Don't forget to walk around the track infield, go to the yard of bricks, etc. And definitely don't skip the museum. It's awesome.
