All,
I went to the Canadian GP last weekend and in the course of many conversations with fellow attendees the question inevitably came up, "how did you start following F1?" So I related this story several times but thought I would share a few images. In 1990 I went to Stuttgart to do my post doctoral work and that summer went to a race at the Nurburgring featuring the World Sports Car championship race. One of the support races was F3 and the winner was a young Michael Schumacher. He had also recently been installed as the #2 driver of the #2 Mercedes for the WSC team, that was leading the championship handily (this race was his second in this car). The #1 Merc was leading everyone by a large margin and the #2 Merc was about five seconds back (with the Jaguars a ways behind) when they pulled in to do the driver switch. Schumacher, in the #2 Merc, slowly reeled in and passed the #1 Merc. It was very impressive and showed just how much the driver has to do with the success. I made it a point to note his name and decided I would try to follow his career. The next year he got a ride in F1 so that is how I started watching. My pictures from the race itself are uninspiring but here are some photos of the program I bought that day. I always harbored a hope that someday I would be able to see Michael and get this autographed or even give it to him if he wanted; it was clearly his breakout race (the article about that race in the Stuttgart paper the next day, shown to me by my landlady, pointed out what an impression he'd made).
Anyway, I just thought I would post this, and see if anyone else has some "Michael Memories" to share

IMG_2572 by jv, on Flickr Merc and Jag were way ahead of everyone else. Not sure why Michael is listed as Austrian. Note our favorite F1 commentator driving the Jag
