I've been wondering this for quite a while, given that modern DFI systems for gasoline engines were developed along the lines of diesel engine principals.
First of all, unless I've missed something, why haven't gasoline engines used piezo injectors like diesel engines? And is there such a thing as a common rail gasoline DFI system? What are the possible hurdles to using such technology on gasoline engines?

This is the first I've heard of it for gasoline engines (whenever DFI gasoline is mentioned from what I remember for the past decade they never mentioned piezo injectors). They're big advantage is that they don't just spray fuel in once, but rather 4-6 times depending on settings to get better combustion.

I think since ECU control has become so advanced in the past two decades and piezo style injectors have become so common they don't need to be specifically mentioned.

Yes, once new stuff becomes the norm it ceases to be news
