Tardozzi shrugs off Bagnaia 2021 engine rumours Speaking during MotoGP™ FP1 in Qatar, the Ducati Lenovo Team Manager denies Pecco wants to revert to the 2021 engine Ducati Lenovo Team Manager Davide Tardozzi has responded to rumours that Francesco Bagnaia wants to revert to using the 2021 Ducati engine, instead of a 2022 spec the Italian marque have been testing ahead of the Grand Prix of Qatar. “I don’t know why people are always speaking about Ducati, blaming and blaming and blaming. Pecco didn’t say the 2022 engine is wrong, I want the 2021 (engine),” commented Tardozzi to motogp.com pitlane reporter Simon Crafar during MotoGP™ FP1. “This is b******* because we give to Pecco a different spec, you have the possibility to manage the engine towards the riding style of the rider, and this engine is towards the style of Pecco and Jack. The other guys were happy with a different spec, and that’s what happened. We know another company in Sepang that brought three different specs. Why doesn’t everybody go to this brand and ask ‘Which one does Marc Marquez or another rider have?’ “We are happy about the rider’s choice, I think we’ve given all the riders the best possibility. Let’s see how the season starts and in the end we’ll see what happens. It will be a tough season, a lot of competitive bikes and riders. An enjoyable Championship.” Asked about how pre-season testing went for Ducati, Tardozzi confirmed they weren’t focusing on setting the quickest lap times. The two days in Sepang and three days in Mandalika were about developing the new bike for last year’s Team and Constructor Champions. “I think that we did a different winter test this year. We didn’t go out to make lap times. Because there were only five days of tests, we concentrated on developing. We’ll see here in Qatar if we did the right job or not.” Bagnaia ended FP1 in P18 after a crash at Turn 6 in the closing stages, with teammate Jack Miller P13.

Mat Oxley: Quartararo obvs not happy with lack of top speed but he already knew that from testing. He had more than 6mph less than the fastest bike, the Suzuki, here today. “It’s too much.” Yamaha engineers must be stunned by the Suzuki’s superior power
Morbidelli seems happy, mainly because his knee is 100% fixed. His 2021 knee injury caused him big problems in braking & if you can't brake right you can't enter the corner right, so the entire corner is messed up. Good to see him back on it
Fabio unhappy: "I expected more. I lack grip and I'm slow"
Maverick Viñales, very disappointed: "Today was a reality check." The Aprilia rider had a first day with mixed feelings.
Aleix Espargaró on his 'almost clash' with Viñales: «He immediately apologized to me; It's a human error and that's it. (Vinales accidentally blocked his fast lap)
Peter Bom: Things I noticed in Moto2 in Qatar Day 1: A. Fernandez lives up to the expectations of riding in Aki Ajo’s KTM team. Acosta continues making a big impact in Moto 2 Filp Salac is a rookie too, and finished today a very impressive P7 Vietti is fast and has a good racepace as well
marcmarquez93 sees the light: “Today is the first time I piloted without pain”.
The Japanese manufacturer is ahead of everyone with Rins on the first day in Qatar and third with Mir: "Steps forward on the engine, but the bike turns as usual"
Morbi: The optimistic Italian: "I got off to a good start and I still have a margin".
Pecco: "After the winter tests we saw that this 'mix' was faster on more than one circuit, and we want to win. I crashed in FP1 because the front tyre was a bit cold.
Surprised Rins: "The bike works better than expected"
Mat Oxley: Miller says he "trusts Ducati 100%" re decision to revert to GP22.1 engines, used during November's Jerez tests. Jorge Martin will use GP22.2 engines. Believes he will be able to dial out spin issues with torque maps, TC etc
MO: MM93 also happy. Says he feels slow on the new RC213V but the lap times are fast, which is always a very good sign. Right shoulder and arm not giving him any problems either. However, he's being cautious - says he needs another 0.2s for the podium

Turns out it was this switch block that caused Fabio's some hassle today. Its for maps under Acceleration and Deceleration. It slid down when he pushed the ACC button so he beat it back up into position and carried on

Moto3 Qualifying
Motomatters Submitted by Zara Daniela on Sat, 2022-03-05
The battle for the first pole position of the season got underway with wind blowing dust and sand back onto the track, impacting visibility but more for the cameras than for the riders and we got a taster of the kind of Moto3 drama we can expect this season once again.
After dominating Q1, Ayumu Sasaki headed straight to the top in Q2 with a half second advantage, although Dennis Foggia halved that gap before the calm before the time attack storm set in. Sasaki wasn’t keen on the unusual pitlane shenanigans and headed out before the cat and mouse games started, but he struggled to improve his already pretty solid benchmark while riding on his own. Most of his rivals got a couple of chaotic laps to try to dethrone the Japanese rider and orange was the predominant colour on the timing screens, until Izan Guevara used a slipstream to perfection to claim his maiden pole position in the world championship on the very last lap.
Sasaki’s early benchmark still secured him second on the grid, while Jaume Masia made a late jump onto the front row in third. Andrea Migno and compatriot Dennis Foggia will be starting on the second row, ahead of Ryusei Yamanaka, with John McPhee, Sergio Garcia and Tatsuki Suzuki making up row three. Rookie Ivan Ortola cruised through Q1 to qualify in the top 10 at the first try and within a second of pole, sharing fourth row with Carlos Tatay and Deniz Öncü. Another notable mention goes to fellow rookie Daniel Holgado, who escaped Q1 at the last second, pushing class veteran Stefano Nepa out and then qualifying 15th on the grid.

2022 Qatar Moto2 Qualifying Result: More Contenders Than Expected Submitted by Zara Daniela on Sat, 2022-03-05 07:29
The intermediate class kicked off their first qualifying session of the season in rather dark and dusty conditions but nothing too concerning in their chase for time. Rookie Filip Salac definitely did not look concerned as he set camp at the top of the timesheets early in Q2, but the Marc VDS duo had different plans for the final couple of minutes of the session, when Sam Lowes and Tony Arbolino swapped top spot. The British rider seemed to have the final say as he posted the first 1:58 time of the session, but a track limits infringement saw that time cancelled and handed the first pole position of the season to Celestino Vietti. The Italian placed his name at the front when it mattered, on the final flying lap, and benefitted from Lowes’ mistake to bring his new Mooney VR46 team to the forefront. Tony Arbolino inherited second position for his first front row start in the class, with teammate Lowes completing the front row of the grid.
Although missing out on the front row by six hundredths of a second, Salac still impressed with fourth position and will be starting ahead of more established names in the intermediate class, such as Ai Ogura and Augusto Fernandez. A cancelled lap time for Jake Dixon dropped him to seventh on the grid, sharing third row with Q1 graduate Fermin Aldeguer and Aron Canet. Although impressive throughout practice, things did not go quite to plan for the Red Bull KTM Ajo boys and particularly for Pedro Acosta, who looked fast but crashed at the final turn with four minutes remaining and dropped to 10th, ahead of Cameron Beaubier and Jorge Navarro. Marcel Schrotter could not improve on 13th grid position due to a late tumble at turn 2 and will open fifth row from Joe Roberts and Q1 leader Albert Arenas.

2022 Qatar MotoGP FP4 Result: Zarco Leads Tight Field Submitted by Zara Daniela on Sat, 2022-03-05 08:06
Evening fell at Lusail just in time for the premier class race pace experiment and it seemed to confirm just how small the gaps are in the field, at least in Qatar. Johann Zarco only took the lead in the last minute of the session, after finding two tenths’ advantage on Takaaki Nakagami, but the rest of the top 10 was separated by mere hundredths of a second, with the top 19 riders covered by one second. Aleix Espargaro brought Aprilia to the fore in the closing stages as well, while Fabio Quartararo showed consistent pace on his way to fourth. After leading the way early on, Pol Espargaro settled for fifth, ahead of the resurgent KTMs of Brad Binder and Miguel Oliveira.
Pecco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez kept each other entertained in the middle of the session and finished practice separated by only one thousandth of a second, with FP3 leader Enea Bastianini joining the top 10. Joan Mir dropped to 11th, although only half a second off top spot and narrowly ahead of compatriots Jorge Martin and Maverick Viñales. While 14th on the timesheets, Jack Miller posted the largest number of laps in the session, with fairly consistent pace in the mid 1:55s.

2022 Qatar MotoGP Qualifying Result: Unpredictably Predictable
Submitted by Zara Daniela on Sat, 2022-03-05 09:09
The floodlights at Lusail set a dramatic scene once again for the first qualifying show of the season and the premier class kept the implicit promise made in practice of being nearly inseparable on the timesheets. While the reigning world champion provided the warmup act by narrowly escaping the dangers of Q1, Act 1 was a more familiar sight around Lusail, with Marc Marquez taking on the factory Ducatis. The Spaniard used Pecco Bagnaia as a fine guide to provisional pole but while the two rivals took their eye off the ball, the rest of the field took their turn to light up the timesheets. Perhaps unsurprisingly, Jorge Martin repeated last year’s feat in Doha by claiming top spot with one minute to spare and challengers did not seem to have an answer to his speed – until Enea Bastianini flashed red on the timing screens that is. The Italian came close to pole but a mistake in the final sector allowed Martin to keep the first pole position of the season, while the Beast claims his first front row start in MotoGP. Although he slipped out of the spotlight in the closing stages of Q2, Marquez was happy enough with third, two tenths off pole.
Jack Miller made an early bid for pole as well but had to make do with 4th on the grid, sharing second row with the Espargaro brothers, Aleix ahead of Pol. Brad Binder impressed as he led the way in Q1 and climbed as high as 7th on the grid, while Joan Mir had to settle for 8th despite being only three tenths off pole. Bagnaia might be quite disappointed to find himself only 9th on the grid, much like Alex Rins down in 10th, while Fabio Quartararo ended a pretty difficult evening in 11th position and will be starting his title defence from the middle of fourth row, ahead of teammate Franco Morbidelli.
Johann Zarco looked set to join the Q2 shenanigans when a yellow flag ended his hopes and left him 13th on the grid, ahead of Miguel Oliveira and a fairly impressive Marco Bezzecchi as the leading rookie

Neil Morrison: Just heard Miller asking Quartararo "What went wrong?" when walking through the paddock. Fabio's response: 'Nothing. That's the problem."
David Emmett: PSA: Marc Marquez is going to race the soft rear.
Pecco only 9th: "Development has kept me busy up to now, it wasn't easy not to think only of myself to finish all the tests. The best of the Ducatis? Enea has the best race pace
Martin: "Rins and Mir have the best pace. I'll have to choose the perfect tires to battle it out with them tomorrow. I'm a better rider this year. I can handle my Ducati better."
Aleix Espargarò makes Aprilia happy: "I had fire burning inside today. I don't see many riders faster than us in the race. We have speed on the straight this time."

Martin Raines: There are 23 GP winners in the current MotoGP entry list, and if all riders make the grid tomorrow it will be the greatest number of GP winners lining up together on the grid for any Grand Prix in any class in the 74 year history of GP racing. 😄

2022 Qatar Moto3 Race Result: Duel In The Desert Submitted by Zara Daniela on Sun, 2022-03-06 06:16
The lightweight class provided the first shot of adrenaline of the season as more or less naughty youngsters lined up on the start grid at Lusail, with the poleman of 24 hours prior sent to the back of the grid for irresponsible riding. Luck seemed to go Ayumu Sasaki’s way as he inherited the prime spot on the grid and looked like a sure winner for much of the race but bad luck was right around the corner – turn 6 to be precise – and it set the scene for a tough fight for victory. Andrea Migno was placed under serious pressure all the way to the finish line but the class veteran took a long awaited victory by only three hundredths of a second. That was how close Sergio Garcia got to the win but the Spaniard did well to stay in contention after serving a long lap penalty early in the race. Kaito Toba also had to fight all the way to the flag, where he earned his place on the first podium of the season.
Having a Japanese flag on the podium looked like a certainty from the very beginning of the race, when Sasaki kept the lead from pole from Jaume Masia and Migno and immediately extended a half second gap over the duo. Garcia, Deniz Öncü, Carlos Tatay, Ryusei Yamanaka and Toba were joined by rookies Ivan Ortola and Diogo Moreira in the leading group, but Tatay did not get to finish the opening lap as he crashed out at turn 7 following a nudge from Garcia. Meanwhile, Izan Guevara, Tatsuki Suzuki and Dennis Foggia were making their way through the pack after being punished to the back of the grid due to irresponsible riding in qualifying. By lap 2, Guevara had progressed to 14th position, Suzuki to 18th and Foggia was 20th, but the trio still had long lap penalties to serve.
Back at the front, the early advantage kept Sasaki safe from the slipstream bonanza and he continued to increase the gap to one full second by lap 4, while Migno, Masia and Garcia battled to lead the sizeable pursuit. Garcia’s hopes for victory soon looked to be in danger as the Spaniard got a long lap penalty for nudging Tatay off on the opening lap and the sanction dropped him to 11th position on lap 5, a second behind the leading group and another second ahead of teammate Guevara, who had served his own long lap penalty a couple laps prior. The battle for second did not lack contenders though, with Migno and Masia challenged by Öncü and Toba and with Moreira, Ortola, McPhee, Yamanaka and Artigas still in the mix. Meanwhile, Foggia had served his two long lap penalties and fought to rejoin the top 20.
Somewhat unusually for a Moto3 plotline, Sasaki continued to extend his advantage to well over two seconds by lap 8 but much more predictable was his rivals’ inability to cooperate to reel him in. Compatriot Toba led the chasers at that stage, with Migno, Masia and Öncü as his main challengers but with Moreira, McPhee, Yamanaka, Ortola and Garcia also biding their time right behind. While Garcia steadily made his way through the group, teammate Guevara was stuck in a lonely 12th position, 2.5 seconds behind the large group of podium contenders, with Foggia joining the top 15 by lap 9.
Sasaki continued completely untroubled at the front, leading the way by three seconds at the halfway point of proceedings and the chasing group soon lost a serious contender when Masia crashed out at turn 12. Once Migno picked up the pursuit, Sasaki’s lead seemed to fade and the Italian was suddenly a mere second behind the leader. It soon became clear that Sasaki had saved a highside at turn 6 but loosened his fairing in the process and it left him defenceless as the pursuit caught up and swallowed him before he was forced to retire.
The battle for victory was back on with 6 laps to go, Migno inheriting the lead ahead of Öncü and Garcia, but the feisty trio was unable to shake off the rest of the contenders just yet, with Toba, McPhee and rookie Moreira still within touch of the podium battle. Only 7 tenths back, Yamanaka, Ortola, Artigas, Foggia and Guevara were fighting for 7th position but perhaps still hoping for more.
Back at the front, Migno had Garcia glued to his rear tyre with 3 laps to go but the Spaniard failed to make a move and got punished by Öncü next time around on the straight. Garcia retaliated soon after and finally tried a move on Migno, but the Italian stayed in control and started the final lap in the lead. Although under severe pressure from his rivals, Migno defended beautifully and only Garcia was able to keep up with him all the way to the line, where the Italian took the chequered three hundredths of a second ahead of the Spaniard. Toba and Öncü dropped half a second behind on the final lap and the Japanese rider climbed on the final step of the podium with only two hundredths of a second advantage over Öncü. McPhee lost touch with the leaders over the last couple of laps and settled for a top five, while sixth place was an admirable result for top rookie Moreira. Foggia’s title bid starts with a solid seventh place despite the multiple penalties he served, one step ahead of Guevara and with Yamanaka and Artigas completing the top 10.
