The fabulous Lusail International Circuit lies on the outskirts of Doha, the capital city of Qatar. Built in little over a year, the track cost $58 million USD and required round-the-clock dedication from almost 1,000 workers in order to get it ready for the inaugural event - the Marlboro Grand Prix of Qatar on the 2nd October 2004. The track itself is a flowing layout of 5.4 kilometres, surrounded by artificial grass designed to prevent sand from the neighbouring desert from blowing onto the circuit. The main straight is over a kilometre in length and there is a good mix of medium and high-speed corners, including a couple of quick left-handers which has proved particularly popular with the riders. In 2008 Qatar celebrated the first night time Grand Prix in history, following the construction of permanent outdoor lighting. The switch to night time racing was a success and has continued to be so, with the Qatar event now established as one of the most spectacular on the MotoGP calendar.

Who are the main Championship contenders for 2022? Three premier class Champions start the season on the grid, but they're not the only riders vying for glory
Making predictions about the MotoGP™ World Championship is fast becoming more and more of a fool’s errand. As the on-track competition gets ever tighter, it becomes near impossible to say what is going to happen next as riders manage to throw up surprise after surprise. 2022 is set to be no different.
Looking through the list of names on the MotoGP™ grid, we see several World Champions from across the different categories, but only three from the premier class. Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) is the eldest of those but still only 29. During pre-season testing, the Spaniard not only revealed he has regained full fitness after two injury-plagued years but is eyeing up an incredible ninth World title.
Consistency is the word that describes Joan Mir’s (Team Suzuki Ecstar) 2020 Championship winning season. The number 36 only managed to stand on the top step of the podium once but racked up a series of top three finishes and strong point-scoring positions to claim the title. Last season proved a more challenging time for the Mallorcan, but he still claimed third overall and will be setting his sights on a second Championship crown, particularly now that Suzuki have hired Livio Suppo as Team Manager. The Italian holds title-winning pedigree, at the helm of Casey Stoner’s victorious campaigns with Ducati and Honda before going on to achieve four more wins with Honda. In short, Suzuki’s targets are clear: return to glory.
Plenty of eyes will be on reigning World Champion Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™) as the visors come down in Lusail. Entering just his fourth season in MotoGP™, the Frenchman has racked up eight wins and 12 further podiums as well as 18 pole positions. 2021 saw him dig deep mentally to take his first World Championship and he begins the new campaign among the hot favourites, but there have been pre-season concerns. Quartararo feels the development of the M1 hasn’t progressed as he would have liked, claiming it lacks in top speed which may prove costly as the season progresses.
Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) will be keen to pounce on the shortcomings of the Yamaha machine and go one step further than he did last season. A sensational string of performances at the tail end of the year saw the Italian take four wins in the final six GPs, and sees him firmly among the favourites as Qatar rolls around. Should Bagnaia show a repeat of that form, it would be difficult to bet against him bringing the Riders’ Championship back to Ducati for the first time since 2007.
Over the past two seasons, KTM’s hard work to reel in the traditional big guns have paid off handsomely. At the 2020 Czech GP, Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) delivered the Austrian manufacturer their maiden win in MotoGP™. Both Binder and Miguel Oliveria (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) have added more victories in the time since, and in 2022, they begin a new era under the stewardship of Francesco Guidotti. Having done great things with Pramac Racing, the Italian is hoping he can help KTM take the next step and deliver some title success.
Aprilia’s racing history needs no introduction, but, despite this, the Noale factory’s time in MotoGP™ hasn’t been glittered with successes. However, the Italian team are now very much on an upward trajectory. The RS-GP is a constant race threat and has gone well once again during pre-season testing, while Aleix Espargaro’s podium at the 2021 British GP was proof of their progress. Also added to the fold is a fully integrated Maverick Viñales, a nine-time premier class race winner, and the Veneto-based manufacturer couldn’t be happier to have such a quality rider donning their leathers. It now seems a matter of when, rather than if, will we see an Aprilia rider on the top step of the podium.

Mat Oxley: Moto2 news. Triumph's 2022 765 engines have a closer-ratio gearbox & lighter primary gear, to help the engine spin up a bit quicker. Dunlop have also tweaked compounds, so cleverer riders may be able to race with soft options. Best Portimao pre-season lap 0.6s inside lap record. New Dunlop front and rear compounds will be raced from Jerez. Rookie Pedro Acosta rode that best-ever Portimao lap last month with new rear, old front

PARTIAL BAN ON HOLESHOT DEVICES ON KEY MOTOGP MEETING AGENDA
The future of MotoGP’s ride height adjustment devices could be even shorter than initially anticipated amid rising calls from riders to ban the technology on safety grounds, with a meeting of the rulemaking body the Grand Prix Commission called at this weekend’s season-opening Qatar Grand Prix for the series’ six manufacturers to discuss what happens next.
It’s believed by The Race’s sources in the paddock that Ducati will present a proposal to postpone any threatened ban on at least the front ride height devices – but will be countered by the other five manufacturers who want the systems removed from the championship as soon as possible.
The devices have developed out of the rear ride height devices first trialled by Ducati in 2019, with Suzuki becoming the final manufacturer to join the club mid-way through the 2021 season.
Using a catch on the rear linkage, they lock the bike in a more squatting position, effectively making it longer and able to accelerate better.
However, Ducati again upped the ante in 2021 by migrating the tech to the front of the bike as well, using a similar mechanism to lock the front forks in place exiting a corner. But, with electronic suspension adjustment banned in MotoGP, it means the entire system has to be controlled by less precise hydraulics and cables – a problem that can create safety implications when the system fails to disengage.
As a result, opposition has been growing for some time now, with a number of senior figures in the championship railing against the devices in the pre-race press conference at Lusail when questioned about the proposed ban by The Race.
“For me, it’s something that in the future they must remove,” insisted Repsol Honda rider Marc Marquez. “I already said last year when I arrived back after my injury, and I think all the riders need to vote together. In the end, manufacturers always go more, more, more – but now with the holeshots and more stroke on the rear, there is more speed, more stress on the front.
“For the show we don’t gain anything, and OK, these are prototypes but for the street bikes, it’s not necessary. I agreed with the aerodynamics because it’s always nice to have a new thing, but not all the holeshot systems.
“We’re always trying to increase runoff areas, and now we’re arriving faster to the brake points, we’re braking later because with the holeshots we can brake later. For the future, it makes no sense.
“I think that it’s starting to be too much,” added 2020 world champion Joan Mir. “Every time, we arrive faster onto the straights – we’ll reach 370kph soon but the [track] layouts are the same. For sure it’s more performance, but it means it’s more difficult to make a difference on the acceleration side. If you use it, everything is much easier, but for the safety, it’s not the best thing.”
However, it’s believed that any ban will only apply to the front devices, with riders keen to keep the rear versions, ironically because they believe that they have a safety role to play.
These were initially introduced only for the start of the race to control wheelies off the line, but the rear devices can now be used accelerating out of slow corners – something that Maverick Vinales says is better for safety, not worse.
“I think on the acceleration,” explained the Aprilia rider, “it’s much more safe with the holeshot because I remember some times like the last one in Austria – you accelerate from zero and the wall is very close.
