Hamlin is a piece of work, we all know this. But is he wrong? Is he? You can't have Hero's without having villain's for the Hero's to overcome.

He must not mind the competition from the 5 as he seems to. They may get along better than many thought.

One win and you are in the playoffs, unless there are 20 different winners in the "regular season."

NASCAR ejects crew chief, one tire changer and jackman from the two teams that lost wheels during the Daytona 500 for the next 4 races. They also decided to take no further action against Penske and Roush for modifying their wheels after meeting with them, other teams and BBS (wheel supplier) and have altered the tech regs regarding wheels starting at Fontana (probably essentially making what Penske and Roush did legal).

This whole thing sounds to me like the spec makers did not leave enough size difference between the drive pins and the holes for them in the wheels, so the wheels, being aluminum (I think?) expanded and tightened up on the pins.

Yes, I believe that the wheels are aluminum. And Penske also said that what they did is common practice in other series where single lug wheels are used, from touring cars to IMSA/WEC to F1.

Let me get this straight:
NASCAR's spec wheels are fucked-up, so they penalize 2 teams that had issues with them?

PURE NASCAR logic.

NO they didn't. At Daytona they took the modified wheels and the were NO PENALTIES issued. But they did remind everyone to not mess with spec parts. Then they looked at what was done and decided that it is OK, Common place in other series, go ahead and your fine. NO futher action.
It was said that losing a wheel would be an issue. So that was treated severely.

The drive pin/wheel fit issue had nothing to do with a wheel coming off. I suspect the engineers made the threads on the hub too long and allowed the nut to start and tighten without the wheel fully engaged. On my GTP car the threads were not long enough for that.

Aren't the drive hub threads and drive pegs spec parts as well as the wheels?

So you can't adjust the wheels or the hubs to prevent the thread being sufficiently high to be able to engage the wheel nut without the wheel be properly seated on the pegs. And you can't adjust the wheels or peg to prevent sticking when the wheels heat up from braking or other causes and expand in the peg fit area.

Nascar has allowed the wheel modification because they F'd up the drivepin size.
