It's coming up in a couple weeks and since it is always hard to catch on TV I checked out their web site.
Click on the 'Purchase Live Stream' button and you get sent off site.
Seems like a pretty good deal if it is all day. Ability to pause and time shift would be extra good.
What do you think?

Cool. I couldn't find any detailed info on the stream, but I went ahead and paid the $4.99 and it seemed to go smoothly. They say there will be interviews and helicopter coverage and some other stuff. They didn't say anything about pausing it or watching it later. But what the hell, it's only five bucks.

The top two factors of that make that race special to me are the ass-clenching fear of going over a cliff and the 'run what you brung' nature of the vehicles.
I just spent some time over on Youtube and really, sometimes I have to look away. I'm not ashamed to say so (well, maybe a little ).
But the first thing I always notice is the insane number and size of wings tacked onto the cars and trucks. Of course they need them due to the thin and getting thinner air, but I've always love that they just let them do it and not over-regulate stuff.
Not so obvious visually is the power. Any ICE that is strictly atmospheric would be gasping near the top, so I guess most of the real challengers have some kind of turbo or super charging. But this is one of the few big races anywhere that a fully electric PU has a chance to dominate. Here are my brief thoughts.
1) The obvious need for air in an ICE is non-existent. Electric gives full power all the way to the top.
2) As an ICE burns fuel the vehicle gets lighter, which is an advantage over electric (a battery never gets lighter) in a longer race. Pikes Peak is only 20km/12.5m so that becomes less significant.
3) Romain Dumas has won this thing 3 times and I think the car is incredible. If he doesn't win it either he screws up or the car breaks.

Camera coverage is pretty sketchy right now. There are three bikes on the mountain so far. Live timing is available. livetiming.net/ppihc/

Stream is back and I think Dumas is about to run.
Yep, he's running now.
Some vehicles have dedicated TV helicopters and this is one of them.

Astounding! I covered Pikes Peak 19 times for a variety of car magazines from 1986 - 2005 (kind of lost interest when they paved it, plus several days of getting up at 3 am to photo practice and qualifying got lees fun as I got older), but 7:57 is just amazing. Back when I was covering it (all dirt) the record was just over 10 minutes, with top speed through Bottomless Pit at 132 mph, and that was amazing to watch - I con only imagine a 7:57!
The aero can be amazing. Back in the day, Rod Millen's Toyota specials had ground effect tunnels that must have been two feet deep at the rear, and Ari Vatanen's Peugeot in 1988 was about the same.

Yep, paving it all the way to the top changed it a lot. But it has been a while now and I have gotten used to it. Besides, it is still so incredibly dangerous I can't really blame them for doing it.
The wacky aero stuff is one of the things I love about it. They need all that because of the thin air and there are no stupid regulations that keep them from doing it. The Dallenbachs always show up with open wheel cars that have turbo-charged engines and crazy wings tacked on everywhere. I wonder how much VW spent on their car that will probably only run one race.
