^ So, the Nut-Gun must have been improperly/incompletely mated to the nut for that to happen. From wear? That, or the mechanic started it spinning before it was seated. That works in Nascar, not in F1.

^^ Thanx. That clip explains it to this old dog. :-) The last time I had a car with the nut thing was back in 67 when I owned a 63 TR4. Wire wheels with knockoffs. I kept a lead hammer in the trunk. :-)

I suspect that gun operators have the gun running when they reach in to removed the nut as well as having it running when they reach in to afix the nut. Pit Stops would be much more than the normal 2 seconds if the gun operators waited until the gun was properly seated on the nut BEFORE pulling the trigger. While the socket used to remove the wheel nuts needs to be hardened - the wheel nuts need to be even harder.

I doubt that it's supposed to be spinning on the way in to remove the wheel. If you look at the socket in my earlier post, the drive splines in the socket are tapered at the end making it easy to engage the splines.
I'd bet the guy hit the trigger an instant too early and that was that. No problem having it spinning on the tighten cycle, the nut will spin then.

If I'm Bottas I refuse to race for Merc again unless the human holding the wheel gun on the front right is replaced. This wasn't the first time an issue arose on that corner.

IMO, the socket was spinning and taking the splines on the nut off and by the time the mechanic pulled it back there was not enough spline left to engage when he tried again.
