www.motorsport.com/f1/news/wolff-bahrain-gp-track-limits-shakespeare/5961231/With four laps to go, Red Bull's Max Verstappen overtook erstwhile leader Lewis Hamilton at Turn 4 but had to hand the position back to the world champion after leaving the track. In qualifying, track limit transgressions at Turn 4 led to deleted laptimes, but for Sunday's race drivers were initially cleared to cross the kerbs without consequence. Only after several off-track excursions, Hamilton was told by his team to stay within the white lines after a warning from race control, an apparent mid-race clampdown which ironically turned into the Briton's favour in his fight with Verstappen. Race control's intervention led to fresh confusion over how track limits are enforced, with Mercedes chief Wolff urging the FIA to be clearer and more consistent in the future. "I'm equally confused like you," Wolff said. "At the beginning of the race it was said track limits in Turn 4 wouldn't be sanctioned and then in the race suddenly we heard that if you would continue to run wide it would be seen as an advantage and could cause a potential penalty. "And then at the end that decision actually made us win the race. Max ran wide in the definition of the race director, gaining an advantage, he had to give back the position and that saved our victory. "So we need to be consistent in which messages are being given. They need to be clear, they need to be sacred and not a Shakespeare novel that leaves interpretation."

Hamilton should have gotten a dozen 5 second penalties for that turn 4 bs.

Hamilton should have gotten a dozen 5 second penalties Agree. But the whole problem really lies with FIA. Hard to believe after years of controversial decisions they still don't seem to recognize how effed up their "situational ethics" way of applying the regs really is. Just as an example, having different track limits for quals vs the race is completely ridiculous. 🙄

I agree that Lewis should have been penalized for leaving the track too. But as we know the rules that apply to everybody else don't usually apply to Lewis. Annoying.
I am so happy Alonso is back. Hopefully next time he actually finishes the race.

They changed the ECU boxes on both Sergio's RedBull and one of the Alfa Tauri cars. Not really a PU issue. New control electronics and a new energy store. Someone correct me on this, but don't they only get 2 or 3 of those for the year. There are what, 5 pieces or however many that combine to what the call the power unit. They don't call em motors anymore. :-) They were swapped out as a precaution because there was some anomalies within the data. None of the parts failed. They be tested and mostly like reused later in the season with no penalty.

This is bullshit. Hamilton needed a 5 sec penalty 29 out of 56 laps -OFF COURSE - should be a 2 lap penalty.

Is Perez considered a lap down? Just add that to the many things the stewards forgot to count, math IS hard after all.

Thought it was a good race compared to what we're more accustomed to seeing.
Too bad it looks as though it involves only two drivers.
Hamilton gave a legitimate master class in maintaining the integrity of his tires whilst calculating all the necessary racecraft to hold off Max. There once was a time that Lewis would have abused those tires to the point of destruction.
I appreciated that tenacious ability to balance out everything that he absolutely needed to do to take the win. There are very very few other drivers that could have pulled off that same feat.
The off track maneuvers that he employed at turn 4 were noted during the race and I recall Lewis' radio transmission informing him that he needed to cease or face penalization. He did so and it did not affect the later stages when Max was hunting him down.
Max and Christian will study carefully where they think they lost that last battle. I thought at the time Max was relinquishing the position, that he should have picked a better place to do it that allowed him to tuck right up to Lewis' rear and yield an immediate opportunity to re-pass him, like down the DRS-enabled front straight. Let Lewis pass just going into the last corner and tuck right into him entering the straight.
Leclerc was a full minute behind at the finish and while it's an improvement from last year, just underscores their disadvantage. McLaren not much better - - or anybody else for that matter. Except for the oddball contest, looks depressingly like another repeat of every year for the last 7. Bottas may reign at the odd race and Perez is yet to be assessed since he'll need more time in that car and team, but probably has at least as much as Bottas in potential.
2nd stringer teams should provide some good racing however, and coupled with the Lewis/Max show for top honors, it should still make for a very entertaining season. If the Honda PU delivers as consistently as the Merc, it'll be an epic fight for the title.

I was going to share the exact same thing. If you're Lewis Hamilton there are different rules for you than for everyone else in the field. From his comments on the radio I think he thought that was open for the race. RB told Max he could do it so Max did as well in the race. But it is clear that Max gained an advantage using that section to pass Lewis (I haven't heard the steward's decision but watching the race I thought the penalty came because he ended up farther outside than he needed to be to avoid Lewis (in other words he purposefully then steered off the curb and onto the flat behind it, so it wasn't just that he was pushed). For those saying he should have stayed ahead and taken the five second hit, RB told him on the radio that the stewards told RB he had to do so (I agree that during the race it sounded like RB was playing it safe and making the call themselves). I think if you ignore race control you'll get more than five seconds! edit: just saw OGR's post at the top of this page (for some reason I thought I was at the end of the string!). I was going to go back and see how many time Max went wide after RB told him Lewis was. Anyone know?

www.planetf1.com/news/bahrain-gp-track-limits-turn-4/Masi explained that Verstappen wasn’t told to give the position back because he had exceed the limits, rather it was because he had gained an advantage while off the track. “What was mentioned and discussed with the drivers at the drivers meeting is that if an overtake takes place with a car off-track, and gains a lasting advantage, I will go on the radio and suggest to the team that they immediately relinquish that position,” he continued. “And that was made very clear.”

My question is will any other Team appeal the Stewards decision to NOT penalize Hamilton for going wide in Turn four 29 times? Last season they said 3 times and you get referred to the Stewards for a penalty, 29 times seems ALOT more than 3!!!

I am so happy Alonso is back. Hopefully next time he actually finishes the race. He did a great job, really. Putting a car which was woefully uncompetitive in practice into Q3 was another stroke of genius. He was on for P7 or P8 before the battery and brake issues.

"if", "When", "Could", "Would", "will", "Going to" all things promising a better year. I heard these promises before, about Red Bull, about Ferrari. When Red Bull is ahead by 150 points in the championship, I'll believe you. As of right now, nothing has changed and Mercedes has both championships in the bag. Call me when anything you just said matters. I do not care what you believe or don't believe. RedBull has the slightly faster car, it's a fact. The battle between RedBull/Max and Mercedes/Hamilton will go down to the wire this season. I'll take Hamilton over Verstappen by 60-100 points and Mercedes over RB for the Constructors by about 150. Here's hoping the Mercedes doesn't develop into the Mercedes of the past seven years by mid-season, when HAM BOT VER becomes a weekly tradition again. Speaking realistically, though, I'll need more evidence than a failed attempt with a faster car on one type of circuit before I'm convinced this season will be different.

They can damage your vehicle if you try! Self enforcing. Curbs need to be CURBS, that you can't drive over without consequence. The so called FIA curbs are a invitation to 'go off course' as they are outside the designed track, the fact that such curbs exist and are used by drivers to improve lap times is prima facia evidence that off course driving is permitted. walls around the track? where's the crickets. super high curbs? Where's the crickets. Never gonna happen. What they could do but prolly won't is keep the curbs low and then plant real grass. There was one track they raced at last year, a old school track that had some of that. They go off track the car prolly won't get wrecked but racing over grass is not a faster way around the corner. A driver shouldn't be able to just drive over the curbs. Period.

Red Bull being that strong on a track that usually favors Merc gives me hope for a much tighter title fight.
