The halo looked broken at the joint between the down leg and the hoop. That was HARD hit.

That section of the track is not a section where things like that typically happen. That was a freak accident in many ways. Typically cars in that part of the track would have side impacts, not straight in. That is the fallacy that many apply to 'freak' accidents - that it was a freak happening; however, the facts are if it happened once it can happen again. A quote attributed to many, including Enrico Fermi goes like this. ‘EVERYTHING NOT FORBIDDEN IS COMPULSORY’ Fermi was talking about nuclear physics and nuclear accidents but it applies here. Forbidden means with the laws of physics as we know then something can not happen. Call it a freak accident or a one in a million or whatever. If it's not physically impossible, it will happen. Today it has.

Trying to remember the last time we saw a fire like this (from an accident, not a pit fire). Berger, Imola?

It looks like it was just a fluke accident. I am sure it will spur changes. It should. Armco should be outlawed. If not for the Halo, RoGro would have been decapitated. All those against it and the IndyCar version should now STFU forever. Yes.

What's worse than having to wear pink pajamas on worldwide TV?
Being on worldwode TV with pink pajamas after your race car spontaneously combusts.

Looks more like the metallic part of the halo is fine. The carbon fiber covering not so much. When you look at the car wedged in the guardrail you can see that the chassis was sheared in two by one of the guardrail support posts. He was so lucky that the impact was where it was.

I thought guardrails had been a no-no in F1 for many years. Wasn’t it the reason they never returned to Watkins Glen?

The Glen didn't evolve with the cars but it just couldn't or wouldn't pay the teams anymore.
Monaco couldn't be run without guardrails. Most tracks still have them.

Accidents like these are chaos theory in action. As bizarre as it sounds the way I see it the survivor cell piercing the guardrail might have saved Grosjean life. A saferbarier there would have been better but that was a very unusual place for a car to hit at that speed.
