As everyone knows Jimmie Johnson won the championship by winning at Homestead. Plain and simple. However if you look deeper with my system NASCAR would get everything they wanted BUT it is over the course of the entire season.
Now with this Championship 5 guys would have a shot at the championship: Johnson, Harvick, Keselowski, Truex and Busch18. They are tied with 4 wins a piece. Rational thinking says "Okay, anyone of those guys wins they are champion." And this is true but lets get into each drivers most favorable scenario.
BTW Wins are basically what determine the champion overall but top 5's, poles and laps lead are the tie breakers in case.
Johnson: Must win the race outright. Tie breakers do him no good.
Truex: Must win the race outright. Tie breakers do him no good.
Keselowski: Must win the race outright. Tie breakers do him no good.
Busch18: One of 2 drivers too not HAVE too win. Finishing 2nd too 5th would be good enough if Harvick doesn't win (or finish 2nd too 5th) or anybody else. But still would have win anyway too eliminate doubt.
Harvick: Should Busch18 NOT win or finish worse then 5th then Harvick would not really need too win either. 2nd too 5th would be good enough too win or winning the race outright. BUT (big but) if Harvick like Busch18 didn't win or finish 2nd too 5th then they are tied in top 5's and also in poles. So it goes too laps lead. Harvick lead 1384 laps while Busch18 lead 1379. So if this scenario plays out EXACTLY like this. Harvick is champion by FIVE LAPS LEAD over the course of an entire season.
yes the chances of such a thing happening are really, really low but it is still a scenario that very well may have played out.

^Season stats here back up my theory. Yeah they would race differently of course playing Devil Advocate here it is a interesting thing. This would also be a Natureal full season championship. 36 races too decide it.
NASCAR would gets it drama and game 7 moment. So they would be happy too.
