Sir Stirling Moss: The world reacts to the death of a racing iconThe passing of Sir Stirling Moss at the age of 90 has produced a flurry of tributes from the racing world, as people honoured one of the all-time greats of Formula 1.Leading the tributes was F1 motorsport boss Ross Brawn. "I got to know Stirling after his Motorsport career was finishing and mine was starting," said Brawn. "I was proud that I was able to count him as a friend. He exceeded the term legend. His abilities in any sort of racing car were truly exceptional. "What I admired the most were the qualities of Stirling as a true gentleman. His behaviour towards his fellow racing drivers, and people in racing generally, were an example to us all. He fought as hard as anyone to succeed and win, but he never crossed the boundaries and he always competed in a proper way. He set the standard all competitors should aspire to. "He was always fun to be with and enjoyed life, with Susie, to the maximum. He drove me around Goodwood several times in a Ferrari SWB in which he won the 1960 TT. Memories that will never leave me. Stirling Moss - a truly special person." www.formula1.com/en/latest/article.sir-stirling-moss-the-world-reacts-to-the-death-of-a-racing-icon.1If20mWPEu2CURdYcwqcHJ.html

Moss was one of the first drivers I really became aware of along with the many others that were alive in the late 50's and early 60's. That he lived such a long and full life was remarkable. RIP.

I saw him just once. It was my first live race, the 1969 Can Am at Laguna Seca. He did a turn around the course in a Corvette. Godspeed Stirling Moss.

Brawn's comments made me think of how fucking good some people are in a car. I mean, if you put me up against some person you pull off the street I could probably beat him/her in a go kart or on a track. But riding in a car with someone who has real talent is totally eye opening (and depressing). It is clear it is not just "training", it is an innate ability to feel and react. It's cool to watch but it is amazing to be in the vehicle.
RIP Mr. Moss.

In the late 80's i think it was Moss decided to go touring car racing for a bit and i remember reading a story where he was at Bands Hatch practicing and asked his team mate how he took one particular corner, the answer was "flat out mate". So Moss went out and did the session came back and said "it's no good, i just can't get though there in 4th without a lift", His shocked team mate replied "i meant flat out in 3rd!!!!"
The spirit never dies, RIP Sir Stirling.

It's cool to watch but it is amazing to be in the vehicle. I know exactly what you mean. In 1989 AAR and Toyota arranged for about 15 of us GTP crew members to go to Willow Springs and take the 2 day driver course the LBGP pro-celebrity race celebrities took to prep for their race, and run the same Celicas they ran. We spent the first day on the skid pad and the small street course learning some car control. On the morning of the 2nd day we knew we would get to drive the big 2.5 mile track, maybe the fastest circuit in the west at the time (maybe still). We started by going one at a time in the RF seat with one of the instructors for 2 demo laps to show us where to be on the track during our laps. I could not believe how FAST that guy was! He was every bit of 4 seconds faster than any of us could turn the rest of the day. It was awesome!

That was a very cool tribute to Stirling by Mark Knopfler. He closed out his set with "Going Home" as the last encore at Red Rocks last year. Was also very cool to hear him play "Speedway at Nazareth" earlier that evening.
