Big-ass sunglasses and firefighter stash required. Unless you're Mike Eddy.

A throwback to what Circle Jerk thought we'd be watching in 2020. They must have thought we would be driving cars similar to GTP cars of the 1980's...

Wow, the Truck series is 25 years old? Dang. Who thought it would last 25 years? I remember the SCCA and NHRA tried to jump on the bandwagon and failed. Miserably.

Larry Phillips at the now defunct Craig Road Speedway in Las Vegas years ago with a kid to whom he gave this trophy. The boy's mom posted this picture on Facebook on the Fans of Saugus Speedway page.

The Truck series never would have lasted if it wasn't for the Cup series. They ran those races to almost totally empty tracks, but the weekenders were there and I guess they made it viable enough to survive. If they had tried it as a stand alone series it would have failed very quickly.

It lasted because so many Cup owners and drivers fielded teams for it.

I think your discounting the popularity of oval track racing (ASA was racing, Thursday Night Thunder, etc) in that time, and the exploding popularity of the trucks. Trucks (and their SUV cousins) have sent almost all American made cars into the history books. It’s top drivers became stars.
Other popular truck series n the day included the Mickey Thompson Stadium Trucks and to a lesser degree the NHRA Pro Stock Trucks. They raced in the same events as the Top Fuel classes so it’s hard to judge how popular they were, although there was a buzz in the racing forums. Mismanagement eventually cost them competitors.
