Pirelli bring new soft compound front tyre for WorldSBK in Barcelona Wednesday, 3 May 2023 The SC0 soft compound is available for the front tyre for the first time and will be in constant development throughout 2023 As the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship rolls into Barcelona for the 2023 Prosecco DOC Catalunya Round, Pirelli have unveiled their tyre solutions for the round at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and teams and riders will have a new front compound to use throughout. Pirelli will debut a new soft compound front tyre in Barcelona which will be in development throughout 2023 with the aiming of making the SC0 tyre a standard solution in 2024. NEW FRONT TYRE: SC0 front to debut in Spain The SC0 soft compound front tyre is the first soft front tyre developed by the Italian company for WorldSBK and is designed to help balance the bike with the soft rear solutions which offers very high grip levels. Each rider will have six of the SC0 front tyres available to them throughout the Catalunya Round, while they will also have eight each of the standard SC1 medium compound and standard SC2 hard compound as well as standard intermediate and full wet tyres in the event of rain; riders will have three sets of intermediates and eight sets of full wets. DEVELOPMENTS CONTINUE WITH THE SCX: two super soft compounds available For the rear of the bike, there will be two SCX super soft solutions available. The standard SCX tyre is back, with eight available per rider, while the SCX-A development solution also returns. Named the B0800, it debuted in France last year and was also used in the 2022 Catalunya Round as well as at Mandalika and Assen this season. The SC0 soft compound is also available at the rear with five available per rider while, in the Tissot Superpole session and 10-lap Tissot Superpole Race, riders will be able to use the SCQ extra soft compound. Two full wet tyres are available in case it rains, the SCR1 and SCR2, as well as the intermediate compound. PIRELLI SAYS: explaining the tyre choices Discussing the tyres available in Barcelona, Giorgio Barbier, Motorcycle Racing Director at Pirelli, said: “In Barcelona we will witness what, in its way, can be considered a historic debut in these 20 years of Pirelli in Superbike: for the first time ever, the WorldSBK riders will have a DIABLO Superbike in the soft SC0 compound available at the front. After expanding the range in the past seasons with the introduction of rear solutions in soft compounds, such as the SCX in 2020 and the SCQ in 2022, and having worked on the new front SC1 and SC2, we now decided it was time to complete the range also working on a front in soft SC0 compound with the aim to balance the high level of grip offered by the new soft solutions introduced for the rear wheel. The riders have already had the opportunity to test this new front solution, in specification B1148, in the winter tests and in those held in Barcelona at the end of March but this will be the first time ever that they will have it available in a race weekend. The goal, in line with our philosophy of making the tyres used in the World Superbike available to all motorcyclists, is to develop this SC0 during the season and then make it a standard solution, therefore purchasable on the market, in 2024.” CONTINUING TO TEST: WorldSSP riders have different sizes front tyres again At Assen, an experiment started to evaluate a potential move to WorldSBK-size front tyres in the intermediate class and this will continue in Barcelona. The SC1-A medium compound, from WorldSBK, is available in the 125/70 size as well as the standard SC1 soft compound which is in the current 120/70 size. Also available will be the SC2 medium tyre with three available to riders for this compound, compared to seven each of the SC1 tyres. At the rear, riders can use the standard SCX super soft compound, with seven available, and the SC0 soft compound with six available to use. In case of rain, riders will have the intermediate and SCR1 full wet tyre for both the front and rear.

STEVE ENGLISH OPINION: have Honda made enough progress? Wednesday, 3 May 2023 08:22 photos.worldsbk.com/2023/05/03/vierge-3632_full.jpgThe Japanese manufacturer are looking to join the party for regular podiums this year; WorldSBK commentator Steve English analyses their performance up to this point Since Honda’s official return in 2020 to the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship, the Fireblade has had one pole position, four front row starts and five podiums. Honda hasn’t led a lap for five years and whilst progress has been made, it’s been slow and steady rather than the steps that many expected. Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) and teammate Xavi Vierge have been solid performers but now into their second year in WorldSBK, more is expected from them. Even though they have underperformed, there is a belief around the paddock that they are now close to being able to exploit their package. A strong engine and super concession upgrades to the chassis has put the bike into the ballpark but now it’s time for the talking to stop. Honda needs; results. PERFECT TIMING: is Barcelona the chance to showcase? This weekend in Barcelona is a home round for the team, they’re based nearby, and with many of the team and both riders Spanish, this is an ideal opportunity to shine. Last year, Lecuona took pole position and both riders had top six finishes. For Vierge, a podium man in Indonesia earlier this year, he is also returning to a track where he had a Moto2™ rostrum finish. Last weekend, Lecuona was called back up for MotoGP™ action with Honda. A sign of the confidence that HRC has in their young charge and whilst Jerez proved a solid if unspectacular weekend, it was good to see him rewarded for his successes with Honda. The most notable of those successes was seen at last year’s Suzuka 8 Hours. In WorldSBK, Honda has struggled. They’ve cycled through experienced riders and brought in two rookies. Alvaro Bautista, well on the way to a second WorldSBK title with Ducati, had a miserable two-year stint with HRC. The Spaniard’s high point of his Honda tenure was Catalunya 2021. A Superpole Race podium and fourth in the afternoon was a great return to form for him. That being said, matching that feat this weekend will be almost impossible for Lecuona and Vierge. DRAWING COMPARISONS: is it BMW who are still ahead of Honda? Honda and BMW are the most natural comparisons to make in WorldSBK. The manufacturers have put resources in over the last few years but have little to show for it. That being said, BMW’s form since 2020 when Honda returned is much more impressive. The German manufacturer has won a race, with Michael van der Mark (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) at Portimao in 2021, claimed eight podiums and had three pole positions. Their form has been hit and miss but they do have more to show than Honda for their efforts, including beating them in the manufacturers’ Championship last year. The time between now and the summer break features five rounds and it’s critical for teams and riders to make a step. Can you make your bike and package attractive to a top rider? Can you jump onto a more competitive bike? The only way to do that is to have good results and show that there is performance as well as potential. A CHANCE IN BARCELONA: can Honda outshine BMW? This weekend is an opportunity for Honda to prove their progress. For the riders, it’s also a chance to stake their claim to the bike for 2024. Lecuona is the better regarded Honda man but since stepping over from the Grand Prix paddock, he has shown only flashes of what’s expected of him. The speed is definitely there but with a package that has underperformed, he hasn’t been able to put his best foot forward. Xavi Vierge has shown himself to be a capable top ten performer who doesn’t make many mistakes. He’ll feel that as a slow burner he’s now ready to show his full potential. Now is the time for Honda to step up to the plate. Winning races is the end goal but right now it’s about getting into the top five because Vierge’s podium in Indonesia is their only top five all season. Catalunya has been their best track since returning to WorldSBK in 2020 and it couldn’t have come at a better time for Team HRC.

David Emmett: FIM and WorldSBK announcing that Ducati are to be docked 250rpm from Barcelona on, and Kawasaki have elected to use some of their concession points taking 250rpm extra. 250rpm means having to reassess your gearing at a lot of tracks, and can mean the difference between holding on a gear or shifting up earlier in some corners.
From 16,100 to 15,850 for Ducati
From 14,600 to 14,850 for Kawasaki
It's a small difference, but a significant one. Won't change the face of the championship, but it might tighten things up a little.

WorldSBK rev limits and concessions updated ahead of Prosecco DOC Catalunya Round Thursday, 4 May 2023 Changes will come into immediate effect for the fourth round of the 2023 World Superbike season The FIM and Dorna WSBK Organization (DWO) have announced updated rev limits in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship category, starting from this weekend’s event at the Prosecco DOC Catalunya Round. After receiving the analysis of the relative performance of the machines over the first three rounds of the 2023 season, the maximum rev limit for Ducati will be decreased by 250 rpm - as per article 2.4.2.2-3* of the regulations. Also starting from this weekend, Kawasaki has elected to use 5 concession points to benefit from a 250 rpm rev limit increase as per article 2.4.3.3 of the regulations. *The rev limit may be updated (according to Art. 2.4.2.3) at the end of every 3rd event provided at least 3 events remain in the season.

LAYING DOWN THE GAUNTLET: Bautista blasts ahead in Barcelona on Friday Friday, 5 May 2023 Track action was fierce as the opening day of the Prosecco DOC Catalunya Round concluded with a sensational display from the reigning World Champion The sun shone strongly at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the 2023 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship on Friday, with the field taking to the circuit with a track temperature approaching 50 degrees. Come the end of the day, it was Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) who was in a league of his own, with a strong lap time at the end of the session being the icing on top of a strong race run cake. DUCATI AND BAUTISTA: the perfect match in Barcelona With an additional 20 degrees of track temperature, it was somewhat unsurprising to see the Ducatis so strong on Friday afternoon. Alvaro Bautista remains the rider to beat over the long distance however, with a strong race pace in the morning and in the afternoon, with a run of 14 laps achieved in the 1’42s in FP1, more than his rivals. In the afternoon, Bautista did a 16-lap run, all of which were in the low-to-mid 1’42s before going out and setting a 1’41.486 to set the outright best time of the day, which will certainly make his rivals sit up and look. Teammate Rinaldi was second at the end of the day but didn’t improve his time at the end. Fastest in the first session in the morning, Michael Ruben Rinaldi came out the blocks fighting from the start and that translated into the afternoon too, as he was once again one of the riders to beat. CHASING: Rea leads Kawasaki charge, Razgatlioglu third for Yamaha Jonathan Rea’s (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) afternoon wasn’t as strong as his morning session, with Rea outside of the top ten in 11th place for a lot of the session before ultimately finishing third. Due to everyone else struggling to better their opening time, Rea took third overall, but he’ll be fighting for the podium or the top five if race pace from the afternoon is anything to go by. Teammate Alex Lowes was ninth overall, reliant on his morning time, but 14th in the afternoon. Once more, Kawasaki struggling when temperatures come up and grip is at a premium, although for Rea, he seems to have found some sort of solution. As for the blue corner, Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) was third on the combined times but was inside the top five throughout FP2, as he enjoyed the heavy braking areas of Turn 1 and Turn 10. The Turk hasn’t won in Barcelona but will hope that he can turn that around this weekend. Teammate Andrea Locatelli’s afternoon saw him strong inside the top nine but he crashed at Turn 5. Losing the front, it was a typical Turn 5 tumble, but it was a costly error, as a new SC0 tyre needed to be tested and time is always of the essence. At the end of the day, Razgatlioglu was third and Locatelli remained sixth. HONDA’S HOME HEROES: Lecuona and Vierge in the top eight It was a strong opening day for Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) and Honda, as they always shine in Barcelona – whether it is testing or not. Lecuona’s pace was in the 1’42s, and a solid effort will hope to be rewarded throughout the remainder of the weekend. As for teammate Xavi Vierge, he crashed in FP1 at Turn 1 but remounted but he wasn’t quite there in the afternoon, down in 12th, one place behind teammate Iker Lecuona. Come the end of the day however, they were still fifth and eighth and that will be filling Leon Camier’s team with confidence going forwards. INDEPENDENT ORDER: Aegerter shines, Bassani behind In terms of Independent riders inside the top ten, Dominique Aegerter (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) was the sole representative in seventh place but he had a strong afternoon session once again, whilst top Independent in the standings, Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) was a big improver in FP2 but still only 13th. BMW AHEAD OF THE REST: work to do for those behind, Gerloff impressive For the ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team, their best efforts came from Scott Redding, unsurprising given that he’s the only full-time rider in the team this weekend. Redding was up in eighth in the hotter afternoon session but wasn’t top BMW. That honour went the way of Garrett Gerloff (Bonovo Action BMW), who was up in fourth after FP2, putting him tenth overall. Teammate Loris Baz was 13th, putting him 15th overall. Elsewhere in the pecking order, Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team) was only 14th at a circuit of which he’s had a MotoGP™ podium, whereas Philipp Oettl (Team Goeleven) was only 16th. The Independent Ducatis no match for their factory counterparts come the end of the session. Eric Granado (PETRONAS MIE Racing HONDA Team) took 17th ahead of Oliver Konig (Orelac Racing MOVISIO), Hafizh Syahrin (PETRONAS MIE Racing HONDA Team) and Bradley Ray (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team). Ray was ahead of Lorenzo Baldassarri (GMT94 Yamaha), Isaac Vinales (TPR by Vinales Racing), Ivo Lopes (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team), Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) and Gabriele Ruiu (Bmax Racing), who had a technical problem at Turn 5. Top six combined after Friday in WorldSBK, full combined results here: 1. Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) 1’41.486s 2. Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) +0.147s 3. Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) +0.166s 4. Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) +0.233s 5. Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) +0.582s 6. Race lap record pace for Bulega in FP2 as he tops Friday running in WorldSSP Friday, 5 May 2023 Championship leader Nicolo Bulega was the only rider to dip below the 1’45s bracket on Friday in Barcelona as he went under the existing race lap record; three manufacturers in the top three Race lap record pace was on display at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for the FIM Supersport World Championship as Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team) topped the timesheets on Friday at the Prosecco DOC Catalunya Round. Bulega’s best time was more than seven tenths clear of the rest of the field as he went under the existing race lap record, set in 2022, by four tenths of a second in Friday’s Free Practice 2 session. THREE MANUFACTURERS IN THE TOP THREE: Ducati, Triumph and MV Agusta shine Bulega posted a 1’44.740s to claim top spot in both FP2 and the combined classification at the end of Friday’s running as he finished 0.747s clear of his nearest rivals. He was the only rider to lap in the 1’44s bracket on his way to finishing first, with Finnish rider Niki Tuuli (Dynavolt Triumph) in second place. His best time, a 1’45.487s, came in FP2 but was still some seven tenths down on Bulega’s time. In third place was Bahattin Sofuoglu (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) who was one of just four riders who did not improve their time in the afternoon. His best time was a 1’45.582s and was set in Free Practice 1, where he topped the times. His day was disrupted by a crash in the morning but it was late in the session and he lost minimal running time. IT’S CLOSE IN THE PODIUM FIGHT: little to separate the field Federico Caricasulo (Althea Racing Team) took fourth spot in the combined classification despite a top-three finish in FP2, lapping 0.854s slower than pacesetter Bulega. Caricasulo was ahead of compatriot Stefano Manzi (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) in fifth place after he set a best time of 1’45.646s in FP2 while Australian rider Oli Bayliss (D34G Racing) burst into the top six in the combined classification. His best time was a 1’45.749s to claim sixth spot overall on Friday. COMPLETING THE TOP TEN: half-a-second between second and tenth After his first WorldSSP podium last time out at Assen, Marcel Schroetter (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) put both MV Agusta machines in the top seven on Friday after he set a 1’45.803s for seventh spot, finishing ahead of Maximilian Kofler (D34G Racing). Austrian rider Kofler was the fastest WorldSSP Challenge rider on Friday and was only a tenth of a second behind teammate Bayliss after the two 45-minute sessions. Yari Montella (Barni Spark Racing Team) was ninth on Friday ahead of Jorge Navarro (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) who rounded out the top ten. Navarro had a crash at Turn 10 in FP1 which disrupted his session. ROUNDING OUT THE TOP 15: a hotly contested race incoming Dutch rider Glenn van Straalen (EAB Racing Team) was 11th after Friday’s action after he posted a 1’46.001s to claim 11th spot, missing out on a spot in the top ten by just 0.015s, while Raffaele de Rosa (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) was 12th; the Italian rider had a trip through the gravel in FP2. It was a tricky afternoon for Tom Booth-Amos (Motozoo ME AIR Racing) after he had two crashes in FP2. The first game at Turn 8 while the second was at Turn 5, and on both occasions, he was able to return his bike to the pits and he put in a series of late laps to take 13th place. The returning Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) was 14th ahead of Adrian Huertas (MTM Kawasaki) who rounded out the top 15. HOUSEKEEPING: to note from Friday in WorldSSP Yuta Okaya (ProDina Kawasaki Racing) was 24th despite a disrupted day. The Japanese rookie had a technical issue in FP1 while a crash at Turn 5 in FP2 limited his running. Luke Power (Motozoo ME AIR Racing) was another who was caught out during the day when he crashed at Turn 14 in FP1, and he finished 30th in the classification. Wildcard Baris Sahin (MDR Offitec Yamaha) had a difficult day in Catalunya after he crashed at Turn 5 in FP2, ending his session early. He finished the day in 31st in the classification. The top six following Friday WorldSSP action, full results here: 1 Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team) 1’44.740s 2. Niki Tuuli (Dynavolt Triumph) +0.747s 3. Bahattin Sofuoglu (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) +0.842s 4. Federico Caricasulo (Althea Racing Team) +0.854s 5. Stefano Manzi (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) +0.906s 6. Oli Bayliss (D34G Racing) +1.009s

Bautista wins, Razgatlioglu vs Rea on last lap as Rinaldi and Bassani clash in Barcelona Race 1 thriller Saturday, 6 May 2023 The Championship leader won a red-flagged Race 1 ahead of a dramatic fight for second place behind him, with Razgatlioglu beating Rea after a last-lap scrap in The MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship’s opening race of the Prosecco DOC Catalunya Round at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was a dramatic affair as Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) claimed his fourth consecutive win in Barcelona to extend his Championship lead in Race 1, while there was a fierce battle for second with several riders at different points. The race was run over a 17-lap distance following a red flag on Lap 4 of the initial race, with Bautista winning the shortened race by 8.8 seconds. BAUTISTA REIGNS SUPREME: Bautista takes Race 1 victory The race was red flagged on Lap 4 of 20 after an incident on the exit of Turn 11 and the entrance of Turn 12 involving Eric Granado (PETRONAS MIE Racing HONDA Team). The Brazilian rider was conscious and taken to the medical centre for a check-up following the crash. Granado was declared unfit following the crash with concussion and he was transported to hospital for further assessments. The riders took to the grid for the restarted race based on their positions at the last completed time-keeping point for each rider, meaning Bautista took the front row ahead of teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi and Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK). The new race was restarted over a 17-lap distance with Bautista able to once again stay ahead from the front while his rivals squabbled behind him. Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) moved from fifth to third, and then ahead of Rinaldi into second, before the factory Ducati barged his way through at Turn 3. They were still side by side through Turn 10 and into Turn 11. The pair made contact with Rinaldi retiring from the race and Bassani continuing; the incident was investigated by the FIM WorldSBK Stewards. Bassani was given a Long Lap Penalty for his role in the incident which he took instantly on Lap 6, dropping him from second to fifth. Bassani’s penalty promoted Rea to second and Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) into second and third place and the pair were battling it out for second place as Bautista pulled out a gap over Rea and Razgatlioglu. Razgatlioglu was consistently putting Rea under pressure but, despite the 2021 Champion looking to make a move into Turn 1, he made the move on the final lap at Turn 1 despite being massively out of shape in the braking zone. Bautista’s victory gave him his 41st win for Ducati out of 82 races run for the Italian manufacturer, giving him a 50%-win rate for Ducati. It’s his fourth consecutive win in Barcelona as he took his 67th podium in WorldSBK. Rea has edged closer to a milestone as he now has 249 WorldSBK podiums to his name while Razgatlioglu now has 91 podiums and Yamaha are edging closer to 400 podiums: they now have 397 to their name. FIERCE FIGHT FOR FOURTH: an incredible run continues… Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) converted two incredible starts as the lights went out to take fourth place in Spain, continuing his run of top-five finishes in WorldSBK that extends from the end of the 2022 campaign. He fended off a surging Dominique Aegerter (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) to hold on to fourth place, with Aegerter in fifth and fin ishing as the top Independent rider. Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) made a late move on Bassani to take sixth place and demote Bassani to seventh after the Italian had a late-race drop-off in pace. IN THE TOP TEN: fighting for strong positions Eighth place went to Xavi Vierge (Team HRC) as he dropped off in the closing stages and he fended off Garrett Gerloff (Bonovo Action BMW) in ninth. Gerloff started the original race from ninth but lost out in the first few laps, before battling his way back up to ninth at the end of the race. Rookie Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team) rounded out the top ten after a stunning late battle with Remy Gardner (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) with the Australian in 11th. Heading into Turn 1 on the final lap, Petrucci looked to make a move before Gardner responded around the outside of Turn 2; however, Petrucci was able to finish ahead. COMPLETING POINTS: first points of the season for a rookie German rider Philipp Oettl (Team GoEleven) took 12th spot, some seven seconds own on Gardner ahead of him, while Oettl fended off Bradley Ray (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team) in 13th. Ray’s 13th place means he claimed his first WorldSBK points of the campaign and his best WorldSBK result including his previous wildcard appearances. Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW) took 14th, just a second behind Ray, while Malaysian rider Hafizh Syahrin (PETRONAS MIE Racing HONDA Team) took the final point. Ivo Miguel Lopes (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) took 16th place on his WorldSBK debut as he stood in for the injured Michael van der Mark, finishing ahead of Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) in 17th place. Lorenzo Baldassarri (GMT94 Yamaha) finished 18th and a lap down following a crash on Lap 1 of the restarted race. It happened at the same time as Scott Redding (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) had a crash in front of him, with Redding retiring from the race. HOUSEKEEPING: to note from WorldSBK Race 1 Oliver Konig (Orelac Racing MOVISIO) was the first retirement from the race when the Czech rider had a Turn 4 crash on Lap 2 of the original race start, putting him out of the race and he was unable to re-join the restarted race. Konig was taken to the medical centre for a check-up following the crash. He was diagnosed with a left ankle contusion and he will be reassessed ahead of Warm Up on Sunday morning. Isaac Vinales (TPR by Vinales Racing) retired from the race after he crashed out at Turn 10 on Lap 10, while Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) had his second crash of the day as he lost the front at Turn 7 on Lap 11. The top six following WorldSBK Race 1, full results here: 1. Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) 2. Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) +8.864s 3.
