#1 on top: Bautista takes first win of 2023 with wet-weather masterclass in WorldSBK Race 1 Saturday, 25 February 2023 An incredible move at Turn 3 allowed Bautista to claim victory using the #1 plate after a wet race in Australia started the season in style A delayed start to Race 1 in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship provided plenty of drama as rain came down before the start of the race at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit for the Grand Ridge Brewery Australian Round. Reigning Champion Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) claimed a stunning victory in difficult conditions after an incredible overtake on rival Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) as the #1 started the season on top in Australia. REA VS BAUTISTA: a head-to-head fight Bautista started from second place but got the holeshot at the start of the race before being passed by Rea, who took his 378th WorldSBK start in Race 1 and moved ahead of Troy Corser at Turn 10 on the opening lap of the race. From there, Rea and Bautista pulled away from the chasing pack as they battled it out for the win. Rea had been able to pull out a gap of just over a second at points during the first half of the race but Bautista never lost touch and slowly started reeling the six-time Champion in. On Lap 10, Bautista made his move at Stoner Corner, the high-speed left-hand corner to take the lead of the race and he remained there for the final 12 laps of the race. Bautista had a huge slide through Turn 8 a couple of laps after passing Rea but, although the Ulsterman closed in, Bautista once again pulled away to take victory by more than three seconds at the end of the race. Behind the leading duo, it was a bit of a lonely race for polesitter Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) as he finished in third place but six seconds down on Bautista and 10 seconds ahead of teammate Andrea Locatelli as the factory Yamaha duo finished in third and fourth respectively. Bautista’s victory claimed Spain’s 70th WorldSBK victory while it was his 59th WorldSBK podium finish. Second was Rea’s 246th podium while Razgatlioglu claimed his 83rd podium in WorldSBK. FIGHTING THROUGH THE FIELD: gaining places Italian rider Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) battled his way up from 14th to fifth at the end of the 22-lap race which included two stunning opening laps to put himself into the top ten. He slowly picked off his rivals before dropping back from Locatelli and settling for fifth place. Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) was the lead Honda rider in sixth as he gained positions from 11th on the grid on his first WorldSBK race at Phillip Island. Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team) was another who gained places throughout the race as he took seventh place. The pair had battled throughout the final lap with an incident investigated by the FIM WorldSBK Stewards after the pair made contact. Petrucci had crossed the line ahead of Vierge but was demoted one position for irresponsible riding, meaning Vierge was seventh and Petrucci eighth. ROUNDING OUT THE TOP TEN: drama right until the end In what was a bit of a theme for riders who finished in the top ten, Xavi Vierge (Team HRC) took eighth spot after fighting from 17th on the grid, finishing ahead of BMW duo Scott Redding (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) and Garrett Gerloff (Bonovo Action BMW) with American star taking a top-ten finished on his first BMW race start after starting towards the back of the grid. Gerloff was around five seconds down on Redding at the end of the race as they finished as the highest-placed BMW riders. TAKING HOME POINTS: in the top 15 Phillip Oettl (Team GoEleven) had shown strong pace throughout both the Australian Round and the Official Test in the week proceeding the event, and the German rider took 11th spot in the wet conditions. He was ahead of Remy Gardner (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) who took 12th on his WorldSBK debut on home soil, finishing ahead of teammate Dominique Aegerter in 13th. Aegerter had started on the front row but dropped back during his first WorldSBK race and his first in wet conditions to take points on his debut. Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) was 14th at the end of the 22-lap race while Hafizh Syahrin (PETRONAS MIE Racing HONDA Team) claimed the final points position in Race 1 with 15th place. Eric Granado (PETRONAS MIE Racing HONDA Team) was 16th on his return to the Championship, finishing two seconds down on his teammate, while rookie Lorenzo Baldassarri (GMT94 Yamaha) was 17th and almost three seconds down on Granado. Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW) was 18th after he brought his M 1000 RR into the pits during the race and returning to the track a lap down. HOUSEKEEPING: to note from Race 1 Michael van der Mark (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) was the first retirement of the race when he crashed at Turn 8 on Lap 2 after he had a highside, which ended his first race of 2023 prematurely. Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) crashed out of the race on Lap 15 at Turn 2, with Lowes going to the medical centre for a check-up following the crash. Lowes was subsequently declared fit. Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) had a technical issue during the race and lost two laps in the early stages after bringing his bike into the pits on Lap 5. He did briefly re-join the race but retired from the race. Oliver Konig (Orelac Racing MOVISIO) also retired from the race after he ran wide at Turn 4 and then bringing his bike into the pits.

What cost Rea a victory chance in wet weather thriller at Phillip Island? Saturday, 25 February 2023 The six-time Champion was leading during the first half of the race before being overtaken by reigning Champion Alvaro Bautista on Lap 10 After the thrilling battles of 2022, the action in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship continued at the season-opening Grand Ridge Brewery Australian Round at the iconic Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit. The race turned into a battle between Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) and Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) with the Spaniard coming out on top after a stunning pass on Lap 10 of 22, with Rea finishing the first race of 2023 in second place. Rea moved into the lead of the race on the opening lap when he passed Bautista at Turn 10 and was able to pull out a gap of around one second during the early stages of the race before reigning Champion Bautista started reeling in Rea. The race-deciding move came at Turn 3 on Lap 10 when Bautista overtook Rea on the inside of the high-speed left-hander of Stoner Corner. Bautista pulled away but had a huge slide a few laps later which allowed Rea to close the gap before the Spaniard pulled away again to win by more than three seconds. During the race, Rea could be seen closing the throttle while upshifting after Bautista had overtaken him and throughout the last laps of the race as he dropped back to finish second. In his parc ferme interview, Rea touched on the subject when he said: “I had some difficulties out on the track but, setup wise, the bike was faultless. The conditions were very difficult. We need to find out the solution to this little issue we had during the race. I’m sure it definitely hindered us quite a bit, especially in the braking and on the long straights on the gear shifts." Speaking after the race, he expanded further on this and said: “I don’t know exactly what happened as I’ve just got back from parc ferme. I couldn’t change gears or backshift the way I wanted so it was back to old school riding. I had to re-learn how to ride the bike especially when braking. That was the hardest thing. Generally, I have to use my clutch to help but my clutch lever’s here for the start because I had my brake lever in place. It was one of those… it wasn’t the most beautiful riding style but I got to the end so pretty happy with that. We’ll analyse what happened.” Rea was still able to finish in second place, ahead of Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) in third, to claim his 246th career podium. It was also a history-making race for Rea as he started his 378th race in WorldSBK, surpassing the 377 Troy Corser started in his career. It means Rea became the all-time race starter in WorldSBK and could hit 400 race starts in 2023 as he sits just 22 starts down from that milestone. On the history he made, Rea said: “I feel great! Honestly, physically, I’m in a great moment. I feel experienced. I started this journey in 2008 in WorldSSP and then WorldSBK in 2009, so I feel blessed to have this job. Really fortunate to work with great people. I’ve met so many friends in this journey. I owe WorldSBK a lot and I’ve contributed to it as well.”

Bautista leads Ducati 1-2 with Superpole Race victory, Rea seventh as GRT Yamaha teammates collide Sunday, 26 February 2023 The Spaniard claimed his second win of the round with a superb ride in the Superpole Race, while Jonathan Rea finished seventh The MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship’s Tissot Superpole Race was 10 laps of drama no matter where you looked at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit for the Grand Ridge Brewery Australian Round. Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) claimed victory for his second race win of the weekend as he finished ahead of teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi, while there was drama in the top six as teammates collided from a strong position. THE TOP THREE: starting Race 2 from the front row Bautista got the holeshot at the start of the race but was passed by Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) at Turn 4 on the opening lap, before Bautista passed him at the start of Lap 2 down the Gardner Straight. From there, Bautista was able to hold on to take his 34th WorldSBK win, putting him level with Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) and his 60th WorldSBK podium. He was ahead of Rinaldi in second who secured second place with a move on Razgatlioglu on Lap 4 at Turn 1, with Razgatlioglu taking third spot. ON THE SECOND ROW: a solid starting position secured Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) was the lead Kawasaki rider in fourth place. Lowes had been running in the podium places in the early stages of the race but dropped down as he was passed by Rinaldi and then Razgatlioglu around the halfway stage of the race. Lowes was able to resist pressure from Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) to take fourth spot and Locatelli in fifth, ahead of Philipp Oettl (Team GoEleven) in sixth to secure a second row start for Race 2. THIRD ROW START: the top nine in the Superpole Race Six-time Champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) took seventh spot after he lost time and positions on the opening lap after he was forced wide by Dominique Aegerter (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) at Turn 4, with Rea unable to make moves back through the order. Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) finished eighth and Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) took ninth to take a third row start in Race 2. Bassani had a late-race battle with Michael van der Mark (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) with the pair separated by half-a-second at the end of the race. HOUSEKEEPING: to note from the Superpole Race It was a disastrous outcome for the GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team when Remy Gardner attacked teammate Dominique Aegerter on Lap 6 at Turn 4. The pair made contact and both riders retired from the race. It means Aegerter will start Race 2 from 10th place and Gardner in 11th when they were running in the top six in the Superpole Race. The incident was placed under investigation by the FIM WorldSBK Stewards who decided to look at the incident after the race, with Gardner given a Long Lap Penalty for Race 2 for irresponsible riding.

Double celebrations for Bulega and Ducati with victory in shortened WorldSSP Race 2 Sunday, 26 February 2023 Bulega led Manzi and Oncu to claim his second WorldSSP victory in Australia and heads into Indonesia with a 20-point advantage over his rivals Race 2 in the FIM Supersport World Championship was a tense, nail-biting race at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in the Grand Ridge Brewery Australian Round as Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team) backed up his wet-weather Race 1 win with victory in Sunday’s Race 2. The race was shortened from 18 laps when the red flags were deployed on Lap 15 due to geese on the track, with the top three separated by less than a second consistently throughout the race. THREE-WAY FIGHT: Manzi, Bulega and Oncu battle it out Three riders were able to break away from the chasing pack in the first half of the race to make it a three-way battle for victory in Race 2 as Stefano Manzi (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha), Bulega and Can Oncu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) fought hard for victory. Bulega took the lead at the start and held on until Lap 10 when Manzi overtook his compatriot at Turn 2 to take the lead of the race for the first time. On Lap 13, Bulega responded down the pit straight to pass Manzi and re-take the lead of the race for his second win of the 2023 after the race was red-flagged due to Cape Barren geese on track on Lap 15 of the originally scheduled 18. As two-thirds race distance had been completed, the race was not restarted with Bulega in first place, Manzi second and Turkish star Oncu in third place. The trio were really separated by more than half-a-second throughout the race, with the gap between the top three just 0.665s at the end of the race. Bulega’s win was his second in WorldSSP after his Race 1 triumph while it was also his 11th WorldSSP podium. Manzi took his sixth WorldSSP podium and his first on Yamaha machinery following his switch from Triumph, while Oncu took his 12th WorldSSP podium to tie level with Jamie Whitham, Chaz Davies and Steven Odendaal. Bulega’s back-to-back wins in Australia meant he became the first rider to win two races in a row at Phillip Island since Jules Cluzel in 2014-2015. ROOKIES IMPRESSING: two rookies in the top six Marcel Schroetter (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) claimed his best WorldSSP result with fourth spot and it also ensured four manufacturers were represented in the top four with Ducati, Yamaha, Kawasaki and MV Agusta. Schroetter had to fight his way up the order and he was eventually 1.4s clear of Glenn van Straalen (EAB Racing Team) in fifth place, while Jorge Navarro (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) was sixth on his first WorldSSP weekend. INI THE TOP TEN: tough fights throughout Navarro had a late-race fight with Raffaele De Rose (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) in seventh spot with the pair separated by just 0.076s at the end of the race, while there was also a fierce battle not far behind them. Valentin Debise (GMT94 Yamaha) and Niki Tuuli (Dynavolt Triumph) were swapping positions throughout with Debise coming out on top by just a tenth of a second. Home hero Oli Bayliss (D34G Racing) took 10th spot after he was running in the top ten during the race; Bayliss had to take avoiding action after Federico Caricasulo (Althea Racing Team) had a technical issue while in the group which cost him time. SCORING POINTS: heading to Indonesia in the points Bahattin Sofuoglu (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) was 11th after he fought his way up the order while John McPhee (Vince64 by Puccetti Racing) was 12th after his stunning Race 1 podium, while the two Thai riders on the grid scored points. Apiwath Wongthananon (Yamaha Thailand Racing Team) and teammate Anupab Sarmoon were 14th and 15th respectively, while Malaysia’s Adam Norrodin (PETRONAS MIE MS Racing HONDA Team) rounded out the points-paying positions. His teammate, Tarran Mackenzie, missed out on points as he finished in 16th place. HOUSEKEEPING: to note from Race 2 Harry Truelove (Dynavolt Triumph) was the first retirement from Race 2 after he had a crash at Turn 2 on Lap 1, with the British rider’s race coming to a very early end following the crash. Andrea Mantovani (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) crashed out at the start of Lap 6 at Turn 1 which ended the Italian’s race early; his second crash of the round. Mantovani was taken to the medical centre for a check-up following his crash. Caricasulo’s technical issue forced him to retire from the race while Nicholas Spinelli (VFT Racing Yamaha) had a technical issue after he ran wide at Turn 10 early in the race. He brought his bike into the pits after he got going again but was not classified in the race results.
