PREVIEW: WorldSBK 2023 takes flight on ‘The Island’ – what are the key stories for Round 1? Wednesday, 22 February 2023 Pre-season is officially over and now, points are up for grabs – what are the biggest headlines coming into the year? The talking has stopped, it’s time to bring the action; the 2023 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship is ready to ignite a brand-new title fight as the Grand Ridge Brewery Australian Round kicks off the latest instalment of the golden era. The Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit: steeped in history, with WorldSBK’s closest finish occurring there in 2010, whilst across four decades, we’ve seen endless battles until the chequered flag. This year’s line-up is one of the strongest ever seen and the list of potential winners and podium contenders definitely stretches into double figures. But after all the testing in the pre-season, what can we take into the opening round of the season? We put all the stories you need to know about in one place. THE TITANIC TRIO: together again in 2023, even fiercer than ever Three different World Champions from three different countries, representing three different manufacturers with three different engine configurations… WorldSBK really is unpredictable of late. Reigning World Champion Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) arguably starts 2023 as favourite, with the #1 on the front of the Ducati. However, he’ll be chased all the way by 2021 Champion Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) and six-time Champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK). One of motorcycle racing’s fiercest three-way rivalries will continue in 2023 and with all three having won at Phillip Island in the last two visits to the circuit, it is anyone’s guess as to who will shine come the big moment. Testing form points towards Bautista, with his rivals from 2022 needing a step – but it can always change. When Race 1 starts, Rea will become the WorldSBK rider with the most starts as he continues setting records, and he’ll hope that an updated engine spec will help him too. MAKING GAINS: testing suggests that the titanic trio are a fantastic four… or more A constant top three rider throughout testing and even topping sessions and pushing his teammate, Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) has been something of a revelation in pre-season. With a new training approach, he looks like he has blended his electric outright pace on his day from 2021 and his consistency from 2022 to become a far more complete package. Ducati’s factory team have been all-conquering throughout testing, but will it continue? Don’t just count on Rinaldi either, Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) is also right there. A very strong Portimao test preceded a staggeringly solid Phillip Island, where the 2020 WorldSSP Champion was consistently top Yamaha. Is there a new order on the horizon? Besides the Italian duo, the Phillip Island test also showed us that Philipp Oettl (Team GoEleven) continues to grow in stature and may have a say in the top six throughout the course of the weekend. RACE DEBUTS AWAIT: welcome to WorldSBK for Gardner, Aegerter and Petrucci In what is a season of fast rookies in the WorldSBK field, none are much more decorated than 2021 Moto2™ World Champion Remy Gardner (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team), his teammate, double WorldSSP Champion Dominique Aegerter and multiple MotoGP™ Grand Prix winner, Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team). Starting with Gardner, the Australian flies the flag at home and will feel the weight of a nation, in the spotlight for his WorldSBK debut. Aegerter has been fast in testing, finishing P2 on day two’s test at Phillip Island and was a winner in WorldSSP at the circuit in 2022. Petrucci also has past experience but needs to find some performance to keep up with his rivals. Italian Lorenzo Baldassarri (GMT94 Yamaha) and Brazilian Eric Granado (MIE Honda Racing Team) also debut, with the aim of solid points. FACTORY RIDERS WITH A STEP TO MAKE: big names playing catch-up Despite a variety of updates brought to the team, Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) and Honda struggled to find a sweet spot in the test, with Lecuona also acclimatising to the Superbike at the circuit for the first time after missing the round with injury last year. Teammate Xavi Vierge was also behind and outside the top ten, whilst Lecuona finished eighth. However, there was no representation in the top ten for BMW, as their best rider on the combined test times was Michael van der Mark (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) in 12th, as teammate Scott Redding was 14th. All four BMW riders have the new aero and a variety of other upgrades, and don’t forget that Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW) has a new teammate in Garrett Gerloff for 2023, with the American the second-fastest BMW in the final test. One factory rider perhaps not expected to be so far down the times at Phillip Island was Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK). In fact, his teammate Jonathan Rea was the only Kawasaki inside the top 14 positions, with Lowes P15. A race winner in Kawasaki green in Australia three years ago, Lowes hopes for a step forward to pick up from where he left off last year. THE REMAINING RIDERS: enigmatic potential The highest-placed rider after the Phillip Island Official Test yet to be mentioned is Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing). The likeable Italian will have the 2023 Ducati for the year ahead but had a quiet pre-season as he got back on track, and a crash with Petrucci on the final day of pre-season testing won’t have helped. Then there’s Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) who returns after a year away and is back on a Kawasaki ZX-10RR. The charismatic Brit has had a few crashes during testing and hasn’t featured too far up the order… yet. Discount the 2013 World Champion at your peril. Oliver Konig (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) has plenty of potential and has made gains in the off-season as he looks to start his year with points, as does Malaysian rider Hafizh Syahrin (MIE Honda Racing Team), with both back for a second full season.

2023 Phillip Island World Supersport FP1 Result: Manzi And Bulega Quickest By Jared Earle | Thu, 23/02/2023 - 17:39 Stefano Manzi, after switching from Triumph to Yamaha for 2023, opened the qualifying of 2023 under a tenth of a second quicker than Nicolo Bulega. Adrian Huertas made it three manufacturers in the top three.
Honda nearly didn't get to race, with a homologation issue caused by engines not clearing customs in time, but all the other manufacturers agreed to allow them to race for the first two rounds.

Bautista blitzes Day 1, Razgatlioglu and Rea outside top ten in WorldSBK FP2 Friday, 24 February 2023 In what was a strange FP2 at Phillip Island, Bautista was one of the few consistencies throughout Day 1 of action in 2023 Sunny skies greeted the 2023 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship for their first day of action at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit in Australia, for the season-opening Grand Ridge Brewery Australian Round. A mighty start to the season saw more domination from Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) as he eased clear by nearly half a second over his rivals. BAUTISTA BLOWS THEM AWAY: the #1 sits pretty on top, Ducati strong on Day 1 Whilst there was a raft of changes up and down the order, there was one constant at the head of the field: Ducati. Alvaro Bautista continued to be in a class of his own with a half a second as an advantage over his nearest rivals. Setting more laps than anyone else in the entire week of Phillip Island track action, Bautista has been able to set outright lap times as well as consistent pace, making him one of the favourites for the remainder of the weekend, hoping to add to his tally of five Phillip Island race wins. Teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi was second in FP2 and fourth overall on the combined classification, but he did have a technical problem with ten minutes to go at the end of pitlane. CONTRASTING FORTUNES: Locatelli shines again, Razgatlioglu last Yamaha in FP2 Leading Yamaha’s charge once again was Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK), who continues to shine as he goes for gold in his third season in the team. Locatelli’s day was almost perfect, but he suffered a tumble at Turn 10 in the closing stages, but was able to get up and walk away without issue. His teammate, 2021 World Champion Toprak Razgatlioglu, struggled in the afternoon and couldn’t crack the top ten in what is turning out to be a bit of a bogey circuit for the Turkish star. Returning to the #54 and finishing in tenth overall, it’s not been an easy start for Razgatlioglu, who was the last Yamaha in FP2. HAVE HONDA FOUND SOMETHING? Lecuona P3 overall Third place honours belonged to Honda and Iker Lecuona (Team HRC), with the Spaniard relying on his morning time but nonetheless settled in well in his first competitive weekend at Phillip Island in World Superbike. The Honda star, who stated that he wasn’t sure whether or not the package is ready to race on Thursday, looked good in the afternoon too and although he couldn’t replicate his morning pace which was marred by a late crash, he was still competitive. Teammate Xavi Vierge wasn’t enjoying it as much, rooted to outside the top ten in both sessions and only 16th on the combined times. A BLUE FRIDAY FOR KAWASAKI: Rea 5th overall but 14th in FP2 It was a tricky day for Kawasaki too, who lost valuable running with Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) at the start of FP2. With work being done frantically on the front of the bike, Rea returned to the circuit and whilst he improved his session time, it wasn’t enough to improve on from the morning, staying fifth. However, perhaps the bigger concern was that at the time the race is going to be run, Rea was 14th. Teammate Alex Lowes was eighth on the combined times but faster than his teammate in the afternoon. TECHNICAL ISSUE COSTS REDDING: BMW progress disrupted in the afternoon At the factory BMW team, it started with complications for Scott Redding (ROKiT BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team), who lost the majority of the session due to a technical problem. The British rider returned to track action with just over seven minutes to go and finished FP2 in 18th and as last BMW, whilst he was 15th on the combined timesheets. For teammate Michael van der Mark, he suffered a crash in FP1 but rallied to put in the sixth-fastest time of the day, making sure all five manufacturers were represented in the top six. INDEPENDENTS AND ROOKIES DAZZLE IN FP2: a new pecking order is being established It was a day of shining for the Independent riders, particularly in FP2. Philipp Oettl (Team GoEleven), whilst finishing seventh and best Independent overall, was third and best Independent in FP2 as well. He got the better of fastest rookie of the day Danilo Petrucci (Barni Spark Racing Team), with the #9 ninth on the combined but fourth in FP2, in what was a Ducati 1-2-3-4. Remy Gardner (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) was consistent on his first day, finishing 11th overall and taking tenth in FP2, working on race pace. His teammate, Dominique Aegerter, was smoking – quite literally – his way to good lap times in FP2 as he was sixth but 13th overall, one place ahead of Lorenzo Baldassarri (GMT94 Yamaha) at the end of the day, with ‘Iron Balda’ 11th in FP2. Making a late bid to move up the order, Garrett Gerloff completed his first day of 2023 in 12th overall but P5 in FP2. COMPLETING THE ORDER: Bassani and Sykes down field Elsewhere in the field, Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) continued to figure out the Ducati Panigale V4 R in 2023 trim and was 17th at the end of the day, one place ahead of Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW), with the Frenchman struggling to get the feeling with his M 1000 RR. Oliver Konig (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) got the better of Tom Sykes (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) for P19 and P20 respectively, whilst Hafizh Syahrin (PETRONAS MIE Racing Honda Team) finished ahead of teammate Eric Granado, the latter of which had a crash at Turn 10.

Double trouble: what happened to Razgatlioglu and Rea in FP2 in Australia? Friday, 24 February 2023 The pair were 13th and 14th in Friday’s Free Practice 2 session although finished the combined classification inside the top ten The first day of the 2023 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship campaign provided plenty of intrigue up and down the paddock at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit with Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha Prometeon WorldSBK) in 13th place and Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) 14th at the end of the 45-minute session. The pair, who were inside the top ten in the combined classification at the end of Friday’s running, have explained what happened in FP2 to leave them in a lowly position ahead of the first race day of the season on Saturday. Razgatlioglu finished in 13th place in FP2 after posting a best time of 1’32.155s, with Rea and Razgatlioglu separated by just 0.029s in the afternoon session. However, the 2021 Champion’s best time was set in FP1 after he posted a 1’31.560s which put him tenth in the combined classification after lapping 0.937s than pacesetter Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati). It left Razgatlioglu as the third-best Yamaha on Friday in the combined classification, but he was the slowest Yamaha rider in FP2. Discussing Friday in Australia, the 2021 Champion said: “In the afternoon, it was unbelievably hot. The asphalt was 51, 52 degrees. We tried a race simulation. It looks like it wasn’t really fast but also it wasn’t bad. We tried some new setups for the race. Tomorrow looks like the weather will be cooler which will help for the grip. For me, today was not an easy day. I was just focused on my race simulation because this is really important. I need to understand the bike after ten laps and the feeling. We need to understand which tyres are better for the race and this is really important.” During FP1, Andrea Dosoli, Road Racing Manager at Yamaha Motor Europe, also explained some of Razgatlioglu’s struggles on Friday with the Italian saying: “Toprak has not found the best feeling with the bike. He’s still testing things from the test. I’m sure from two days data the guys will be able to improve the bike.” Rea’s best time of the day was a 1’31.304s, set in Free Practice 1, but could only set a best time eight tenths down on that in Free Practice 2. His FP1 time was good enough for fifth in the combined classification but the FP2 time left him languishing in 14th place at the end of the session, lapping 1.521s slower than Bautista as Rea posted a 1’32.144s. During the session, Rea lost some track time as the mechanics worked on the front of his ZX-10RR machine with the six-time Champion explaining this and his deficit to Bautista. He said: “I felt very solid in the first session, our pace was good. As soon as the temperature crept up and I did my first out in FP2, I didn’t feel good with the bike at all. I had zero edge grip. We tried a small setup change to go back. We were trying something and we were curious to go back and check our base setup. Even with our base setup, I had zero grip. We weren’t pushing the tyre, the tyre wasn’t in range of temperature or pressure. It’s also true that our bike isn’t working great on the edge of the tyre. We need to make the bike turn more naturally. That’s going to be a priority tomorrow. When I launch the bike into the corner, I need it to track around the corner and not to use the rear or to slide and correct the line. This is wasting the rear tyre. We’re looking for edge grip tomorrow and some turning.” Bautista weighed in on his rivals’ struggles after Friday, saying: “I’ve said this season there are more riders fighting for the top positions. It’s not easy when you don’t have a good day, you have other riders in front of you. For example, if we had some bad days, not many riders could stay in between. This season is different and, especially in this race after two days testing this week, there are more riders in good shape. I expect them, Jonathan and Toprak, to be in the mix but I think Locatelli is doing well and also my teammate, Michael Ruben Rinaldi, is doing well and I’m happy for him. I think we will see good races tomorrow and Sunday.”
