2022 AWAITS: six rookies looking to make an instant impact on WorldSBK in 2022! Tuesday, 22 March 2022 08:30 GMT The six riders who will make their debut this season in WorldSBK share a lot of ambition and talent, but each one of them has peculiarities that make them unique… With the 2022 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship getting underway shortly, it’s time to take a look at the rookies looking to make their mark on WorldSBK in 2022. No fewer than six riders will make their debut when they line up on the grid at MotorLand Aragon at the start of April, looking to battle for glory and gain a foothold in the fastest production-based Championship. Spanish riders Iker Lecuona and Xavi Vierge, both at Team HRC, make up two of the rookies on the 2022 grid alongside Czech rider Oliver König, San Marino’s Luca Bernardi, German Philipp Oettl and Malaysian Hafizh Syahrin. A diverse set of countries being represented by the six rookies as they looked to add to the unpredictability of WorldSBK either at the fight at the front, in the hard-fought battle for the top ten or to round out the points. 2021 witnessed an incredible fight between Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) and Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) in the battle for top rookie, a fight that was only resolved at the penultimate Round of the season. The 2022 fight to be top rookie could be even more intense with this year’s rookies. Not every rider gets the chance to debut in a World Championship as part of a factory team, but both Iker Lecuona and Xavi Vierge have in 2022 as they form Team HRC’s line-up. With both arriving from the MotoGP™ paddock at 22 and 24 years old respectively, they are tasked with leading Team HRC to their first victory in WorldSBK since the late Nicky Hayden claimed victory at Sepang in 2016. It is an exciting chance for the pair but one that comes with pressure as they lead the Japanese manufacturer and look to claim podiums and wins. The youngest rider on the grid is Oliver König, with the Czech rider turning 20 on March 18th. He made his WorldSBK debut at the 2021 season-ending Indonesian Round and comes into his full rookie campaign with Orelac Racing VerdNatura as the first rider to make the step directly from WorldSSP300 to WorldSBK. It’s a philosophy the Orelac Kawasaki squad uses, to act as a platform for young riders, and it is one shared by the Barni Spark Racing Team in 2022. Luca Bernardi joins Marco Barnabo’s team for 2022 after impressing in 2021 in WorldSSP before a back injury sustained at Mangy-Cours disrupted his season. Bernardi, like König, will make his own bit of history as he becomes the first rider to race in WorldSSP300, WorldSSP and WorldSBK. 20-year-old Bernardi will be joined by WorldSSP rival Philipp Oettl on the WorldSBK grid, with both riders competing on the Ducati Panigale V4 R bikes. Oettl links up with the Team Goeleven squad for his rookie campaign. In WorldSSP, Oettl was a consistent front runner as he claimed 11 podiums in his two seasons and, at 25, brings extensive experience that he has acquired in Moto3™, Moto2™ and WorldSSP. Malaysian rider Hafizh Syahrin is the sixth rookie on the WorldSBK grid and, at 27, is the oldest of the six rookies. His career includes several seasons of Moto2™ action where he claimed several podiums and two MotoGP™ campaigns where he became a regular points scorer. Now the MIE Racing Honda Team rider has a new challenge, looking to regularly place inside the top ten, as he becomes Malaysia’s first full-time competitor in the Championship.

Rea under race lap record pace on Day 1 at Aragon as he tops the WorldSBK timesheets Monday, 4 April 2022 The six-time World Champion topped the times by just 0.016s ahead of nearest rival Toprak Razgatlioglu on the opening day of testing at MotorLand Aragon Despite colder conditions impacting on Day 1 of the Supported Test at MotorLand Aragon, Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) was able to lap faster than the race lap record for the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship venue as he topped the timesheets on Day 1 of testing. The six-time World Champion left it late to go top on Day 1 in the combined classification, beating his nearest rival by just 0.016s. THREE MANUFACTURERS IN THE TOP THREE Rea claimed top spot on the opening day of action with a lap late in the third and final session of track action as he posted a 1’49.394s, to go under his own race lap record at MotorLand Aragon by two tenths of a second. Rea, who was hoping to start finetuning his ZX-10RR machine ahead of the Pirelli Aragon Round beat Razgatlioglu’s best time of 1’49.410s, set in FP2, in the final minutes of Day 1. Like Rea, Razgatlioglu was under the race lap record set the six-time World Champion in last year’s Superpole Race, although the 2021 Champion’s day ended a few minutes early when he suffered a technical issue at Turn 15 in the closing stages of the session. Razgatlioglu used new electronics throughout the test as well as working on the race setup of his Yamaha YZF R1. Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) claimed third spot despite a crash on his Panigale V4 R machine at Turn 6 in FP3, ending the day six tenths down on Rea’s best time as his focus was on the start of the season in just a few days. ALL FIVE MANUFACTURERS FEATURE IN A TIGHTLY PACKED TOP TEN Garrett Gerloff (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) finished the day in fourth place as the American lapped around seven tenths slower than Rea, although Gerloff was fastest in the third sector of the lap. Gerloff’s R1 machine was fitted with the 2022 engine and a new exhaust seen on Razgatlioglu’s bike during testing as he claimed a top four finish on Day 1. Teammate Kohta Nozane ensured but GRT Yamaha riders were inside the top ten with eighth place, just four tenths off Gerloff’s pace on Day 1. The American rider finished three tenths clear of Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) as Lowes had a couple of items to try throughout the test, on the suspension and chassis side, although did not want to change the bike too much due to colder conditions than are expected at the Aragon Round. Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) claimed sixth spot as he, like teammate Razgatlioglu, did not improve in the final session of the day. His best time was a 1’50.433s, just over a second off Rea’s time but 0.010s away from Lowes. Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW) was the highest-placed BMW rider as he claimed a top seven finish on his M 1000 RR, with teammate Eugene Laverty in tenth. Laverty’s best time was a 1’50.600s as he worked on the rear grip of his machine. All five manufacturers were inside the top ten as Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) went ninth fastest on his CBR1000RR-R machine, posting a best time of 1’50.586s as he prepares for his rookie WorldSBK campaign. Lecuona’s plan was to do as many laps as possible but cold conditions in the morning and a Turn 7 crash in FP3 meant his running was disrupted, although he was okay following the crash. TO NOTE… Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) was 11th, just 0.032s outside a place inside the top ten on his Panigale V4 R as he looked to test a new swingarm as well as different setup choices. Scott Redding (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) claimed 13th spot for the factory BMW squad, three tenths down on the fastest time record by Baz, the fastest BMW rider. Last year’s breakthrough star, Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) was 18th on the opening day of test with a time of 1’51.890s, over a tenth slower than debutant Roberto Tamburini (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team) who received a late call-up to the 2022 Championship. Christophe Ponsson (Gil Motor Sport-Yamaha) was 19th fastest after he had a Turn 2 crash in FP3, with the Frenchman okay after the incident. The top 10 following WorldSBK action at Aragon, full results here: 1. Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) 1’49.394s 2. Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) +0.016s 3. Rea fends off challenge from Razgatlioglu and Bautista as WorldSBK Aragon test concludes Tuesday, 5 April 2022 Jonathan Rea posted the best time as all five manufacturers finished inside the top ten on the final day of testing before racing starts The final day of the Supported Test at MotorLand Aragon came to a conclusion for the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship teams and riders with six-time Champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) topping the timesheets as the only rider to lap in the 1’48s bracket. On a day of competitive pace, four manufacturers were represented in the top five and all five were inside the top ten. THE COMPETITION IS FIERCE: Four manufacturers in the top five Rea’s best time from Day 2’s second session had looked like it was going to be enough to top the day, but he was able to improve again to a 1’48.714s to secure top spot on the second and final day of testing ahead of the Pirelli Aragon Round. He was three tenths clear of reigning Champion Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) in second place, whose late lap time of a 1’49.068s moved him into second place. Razgatlioglu yesterday was continuing to test more about the electronics on his Yamaha YZF R1 while Rea had a couple of items to test, although no big new components. Razgatlioglu overhauled Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) to demote the Spanish rider into third place as Bautista looked to work on his Panigale V4 R machine with the Aragon Round in mind. Bautista’s best time was a 1’49.094s and he finished two tenths clear of American rider Garrett Gerloff (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) as Gerloff completed the top four as he tested new components previously tested by the Pata Yamaha squad, using the full 2022 bike for the first time. Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW) was the highest-placed BMW rider in fifth place, with four of 2022’s five manufacturers in the top five, as he posted a 1’49.383s in FP5; Baz the highest-placed rider who did not improve in the final session. SEVEN RIDERS WITHIN THREE TENTHS: A closely-matched field… Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) was in sixth place with a time of 1’49.831s, 1.117s down on Rea’s pacesetting time but the Italian rider, heading into his second WorldSBK campaign, led a pack of seven riders within three tenths of each other. Locatelli’s compatriot, Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati), was seventh but just 0.032s behind Locatelli as he tried the new swingarm on his Ducati Panigale V4 R machine. Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) was the fastest Honda rider out on track but there was nothing to separate him from teammate Xavi Vierge on the timesheets. Lecuona’s day was interrupted by a crash at Turn 2 in the second session of the day but he, like Vierge, was to focus on the upcoming Aragon Round; their first time racing at the venue in WorldSBK. Rookie Philipp Oettl (Team Goeleven) rounded out the top ten with a best time of 1’50.086s as he continued to show strong pace ahead of his rookie campaign. Scott Redding (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) was just 0.018s outside the top ten as the British rider finished in 11th place. Redding’s day was interrupted by a crash at Turn 5 but he did get to try Pirelli’s new SCQ tyre on Day 2 of the test. Redding was just 0.008s clear of Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) as Lowes looked to complete more laps on his ZX-10RR without changing too much on the bike due to the colder conditions than the ones expected at the Aragon Round. HOPING TO MOVE UP THE GRID: Rounding out the top 15 Irishman Eugene Laverty (Bonovo Action BMW) claimed 13th place on his M 1000 RR machine despite a crash at Turn 9 in the second session, with the Irishman able to re-join the session. He was ahead of fellow BMW rider Ilya Mikhalchik (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team), who continues to stand in for the injured Michael van der Mark and will replace him for the Aragon Round. Mikhalchik’s best time was a 1’50.498s, just 0.052s away from Laverty. Rookie Roberto Tamburini (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team), who received a late call-up for the 2022 campaign, rounded out the top 15 as he posted a best time of 1’50.656s, 1.942s away from Rea’s pacesetting time. The top 10 following Day 2 of WorldSBK action at Aragon, full results here: 1. Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) 1’48.714s 2. Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) +0.354s 3. Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) +0.380s 4. Garrett Gerloff (GYRT GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) +0.521s 5. Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW) +0.669s 6. Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) +1.117s 7. Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) +1.149s 8. Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) +1.257s 9. Xavi Vierge (Team HRC) +1.296s 10. Philipp Oettl (Team Goeleven) +1.372s

Rea battles Bautista at MotorLand Aragon for Race 1 honours, separated by just 0.90s Saturday, 9 April 2022 Jonathan Rea and Alvaro Bautista went head-to-head for the first victory of the season at MotorLand Aragon with the six-time Champion just edging it The 2022 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship season started in incredible style at MotorLand Aragon for the Pirelli Aragon Round as Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) opened his account for the season, the fifth time he has won the season-opening race. He was made to work hard for the victory after an incredible 18-lap race-long battle with Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) as the pair battled it out for victory. NEW SEASON, SAME ACTION: the top three battle it out As the lights went out, Bautista got the holeshot into Turn 1 but he soon found himself demoted into second as Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) forced his way through at Turn 2. It meant Rea was demoted into third place but he soon worked himself back into the front as the top three fought it out throughout each lap. In what was a similar feeling to 2021, the Yamaha, Ducati and Kawasaki riders traded blows throughout the 18-lap race as Razgatlioglu, Bautista and Rea fought it out for victory with each rider using their bike’s strengths in the search for victory. The trio were overtaking each other down the back straight while Rea’s preferred option to make moves was into Turn 7. At the end of Lap 9, Bautista had a huge moment which allowed Rea back through into Turn 1 at the start of Lap 10 after leading for a couple of laps, but the pair continued to fight through the final two corners in the battle for victory. On Lap 14, Bautista used the power of his Ducati to move into the lead of the race before Rea responded into Turn 7. Bautista tried a move on the last lap into the final two corners, but Rea was able to defend the position before winning a drag race to the line. Despite Rea and Bautista battling, they were able to pull a gap to Razgatlioglu in third place as the reigning World Champion claimed a podium finish. Rea’s victory gave him his 21st consecutive podium at Aragon and his 22nd in total, the most any rider has at a single circuit for his 216th podium in his career. Second place for Bautista means he has now taken 28 podiums in his career, while Razgatlioglu now has 54 career podiums; the same number as his rider number until this season. FIGHTING FOR THE TOP TEN: a competitive race for the top ten… Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) claimed fourth place as he finished around five seconds back from Razgatlioglu. The Italian had been fighting in the lead group in the first half of the race but soon found himself on track on his own as he finished five seconds clear of fellow Italian Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK). Both Team HRC riders finished inside the top seven with Iker Lecuona and Xavi Vierge finishing sixth and seventh respectively, on a strong start for the two Spanish rookies looking to spearhead the Honda factory effort in 2022. Illia Mykalchyk (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) scored eighth place on his debut as he scored Ukraine’s first points in WorldSBK after becoming the first rider from Ukraine to race in WorldSBK. He finished just 0.084s behind Vierge. American star Garrett Gerloff (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) finished in ninth place, just three tenths away from Mykalchyk in eighth place. Irish rider Eugene Laverty (Bonovo Action BMW) rounded out the top ten on his first race with the Bonovo BMW squad, finishing half a second clear teammate Loris Baz. THE BATTLE FOR POINTS: rounding out the top 15 Luca Bernardi (BARNI Spark Racing Team) scored his first points in his first WorldSBK race as he came home in 12th place, scoring the first points for San Marino since Alex De Angellis finished 13th at Laguna Seca in 2017. Bernardi finished just three tenths clear of fellow rookie Philipp Oettl (Team Goeleven) in 13th as five of the seven debutants on the grid at Aragon scored points. Frenchman Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) scored 14th on his return to competitive action following an injury-hit 2021 season, just 0.389s behind Oettl and 0.520s clear of Scott Redding (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) in 15th place; the British rider scoring a single point on his BMW debut. TO NOTE: housekeeping from WorldSBK Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) had been running towards the top ten but a trip through the gravel at Turn 15 dropped him down the order and he narrowly missed out on points as he finished in 16th place. He was less than a second clear of rookie Roberto Tamburini (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team) in 17th place. Starting his second season in WorldSBK, Kohta Nozane (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) finished in 18th place as he finished clear of Christophe Ponsson in the family-run Gil Motor Sport-Yamaha squad. Leandro Mercado (MIE Racing Honda Team) finished in 20th place, ahead of teammate Hafizh Syahrin, while Oliver Konig (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) and Loris Cresson (TPR Team Pedercini Racing) rounded out the classified finishers. Gabriele Ruiu (Bmax Racing) was the first retirement of the 2022 season when he brought his BMW M 1000 RR machine into the pits in the early stages of the season, while Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) crashed out of the race at Turn 12 on Lap 7.

Two wins on Sunday at Aragon for Bautista as he takes commanding WorldSBK Race 2 victory Sunday, 10 April 2022 The Spanish rider added to his Superpole Race victory with a win in Race 2 at MotorLand Aragon With Race 2 at MotorLand Aragon came a second MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship win of the day for Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) at the Pirelli Aragon Round. After starting from first place following his Tissot Superpole Race victory, Bautista claimed victory by more than four seconds as he claimed a slender three-point lead in the Championship after the season-opening round. A THRILLING BATTLE FOR VICTORY: victory for Bautista with battles galore The fight for victory was another thrilling affair with Bautista doubling up for victories on Sunday with a win in Race 2 as he withstood early challenges from teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi, Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) and Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK). Bautista hit the front on Lap 3 of 18 before looking to pull away at the front of the field. He was able to take advantage of Rea and Rinaldi battling over second place, including Rea running wide at Turn 1 on Lap 4 which allowed Rinaldi through to second place with Razgatlioglu third and Rea fourth. Two laps later and Rea outbraked Razgatlioglu at Turn 1 to move up to third, while on Lap 11 Rinaldi ran wide which allowed Rea back into second place. Razgatlioglu initially dropped back but he then closed the gap to Rinaldi in the closing stages of the race, trying a move at Turn 16-17 where Rinaldi defended around the outside to maintain position. On the next lap, Lap 15, Razgatlioglu made his move into Turn 1 to move into third place before setting his eyes on Rea. Although he could close the gap across the final four laps, Rea held on for second place with Razgatlioglu third and Rinaldi fourth. With victory, Bautista leads the Championship standings for the first time since Misano in 2019, a gap of 1022 days, as he claimed the 18th win of his WorldSBK career. Rea and Razgatlioglu claimed second and third respectively and for the first time the same three riders shared three podiums at the opening round of the season. Rea’s second place means he took his 175th podium with Kawasaki and the 218th in his career. TAKING A STEP FORWARD: Independent riders shine Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) finished in fifth place as he bounced back from his Race 1 crash to claim a top-five finish as he led home Independent rider Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) in sixth place after the Italian made a good start to jump up the order as he looks to continue his form from 2021 where he impressed as a rookie. The battle for seventh featured four riders with Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW), Xavi Vierge (Team HRC), Garrett Gerloff (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) and Iker Lecuona (Team HRC). Baz was able to get ahead at around the halfway distance of the race and stayed there as the lead BMW rider in Race 2. He was 0.865s clear of Spanish rookie Vierge who finished as the lead Honda rider, although he was just 0.616s ahead of Gerloff. Lecuona had been ahead of Gerloff until the last lap but found himself demoted to tenth on Lap 18 of the 18-lap encounter. LEAVING RACE 2 WITH POINTS: a huge battle for points French rider Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) came home in 11th place and only two seconds away from the battle for seventh on a strong comeback weekend for the Frenchman. Eugene Laverty (Bonovo Action BMW) ensured both Bonovo BMW riders scored points in Race 2 as he claimed 12th place after a late-race battle with rookie Philipp Oettl (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) as Laverty’s WorldSBK experience helped him up the order. Laverty and Oettl were both closely followed by rookie Roberto Tamburini (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team) after the Italian, who received a late call-up to race in the 2022 season, claimed 14th place on his first WorldSBK round. Another debutant, Illia Mykhalchyk (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team), scored points with 15th place; the Ukrainian was the only factory BMW rider to score points in Race 2. TO NOTE: WorldSBK housekeeping Luca Bernardi (BARNI Spark Racing Team) dropped down the order on the opening lap of the race but was able to battle back to claim 16th place although he was some 11 seconds away from claiming points. He was more than two seconds clear of wildcard Gabriele Ruiu (Bmax Racing) in 17th place who withstood the challenge from French rider Christophe Ponsson (Gil Motor Sport-Yamaha) with just 0.615s between them. Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) was 19th after he had a crash at Turn 9 in the early stages of the race, but he battled back to finish four seconds clear Hafizh Syahrin (MIE Racing Honda Team) in 20th place. Locatelli had got a good launch as the lights went out although he dropped back to fifth at Turn 1. Syahrin’s teammate, Leandro Mercado, was 1.6s back in 21sth place with Oliver Konig (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) and Loris Cresson (TPR Team Pedercini Racing) rounding out the classified runners. Kohta Nozane’s (GYRT GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) race came to an end on Lap 14 when he had a crash on the exit of the Turn 7 right-hander. Scott Redding (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) was the only other rider not classified in the race. The British rider had a couple of off-track excursions before he brought his M 1000 RR machine into the pits after completing 11 lap
