Technical discussion: What is the biggest single advance over the years as far as the performance of the cars?
My vote is tires. It's what has actually allowed cars of bygone eras to go faster than in their prime, and all the loading--aero, mechanical, powertrain, etc--get transferred though them.
I've been watching Le Mans 2006 and Pescarolo were running on tires designed for the Audi R10. I think that the team fairly quickly regretted not running on customer spec tires or even modernized versions of the R8's tires as the Pescarolos couldn't get them to consistently work. They had phenomenal wear, but no grip while on the Audi R10, which the tires were designed around, they worked though the whole of the race depending on compound/track conditions.
Also, we have to remember that endurance racing that the tires had to offer up performance while being multi-stinted, especially at Le Mans. Who could forget in 2011 when Audi Sport quintuple stinted tires while running some of the race's fastest laps?
That's why I think that tire advancement has been the single biggest thing that's lead to performance increases, and things like powertrain and aero advancements probably wouldn't mean much if tires didn't advance along side them.

I would say it is 50/50 between tires and aero efficiency. They work hand in hand to increase pace.
