Francesco Bagnaia: MotoGP™ World Champion if… There are a few permutations at play but the Italian could successfully defend his crown in the Tissot Sprint at the Valencia GP It’s been a thrilling title fight in 2023 and it’s set to reach its conclusion at the season finale in Valencia this weekend. Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) currently holds a 21 point advantage after striking a hammer blow to Jorge Martin’s (Prima Pramac Racing) hopes on Sunday in Qatar, but with 37 still to play for, it is far from over. Pecco will have his first match point in Saturday’s Tissot Sprint, where a variety of scenarios would see him crowned back-to-back MotoGP™ World Champion. Martin has been the king of the Sprints this year, and he’ll need to maintain that form if he is to keep the title fight rolling into Sunday. For Bagnaia, it’s simple. If he outscores his title rival by four points or more on Saturday, he will have successfully defended the Championship. Below you can see the full list of permutations that would hand the Italian Championship honours on Saturday: He wins and Martin doesn’t finish better than P3 He finishes P2 and Martin doesn’t finish better than P5 He finishes P3 and Martin doesn’t finish better than P7 He finishes P4 and Martin doesn’t finish better than P8 He finished P5 and Martin doesn’t finish better than P9 He finished P6 and Martin fails to score any point

Holgado pips Alonso to the lead the way on Friday morning The Spaniard is looking good on home soil after the opening Practice session of the weekend The final round of the season is underway and it was Daniel Holgado (Red Bull KTM Tech3) who drew first blood at the Gran Premo Motul de la Comunitat Valenciana as he went 0.401s clear following Friday morning's Practice 1 session. Holgado's 1:38.919 came at the end of a dominant display that secured the Tech3 rider the top spot despite a strong showing from David Alonso (GASGAS Aspar Team). The Columbian found strong pace in the latter stages and even topped the pile within the final five minutes but didn't quite have enough in the tank to topple the Spaniard. The pair lead finished ahead of the newly-crowned Champion Jaume Masia (Leopard Racing) - the latter was 0.9s adrift in P3. Taiyo Furusato (Honda Team Asia) took well to the Circuit Ricardo Torrmo as he finished the session in P4 ahead of his compatriot Ryusei Yamanaka (GASGAS Aspar Team).

Acosta straight on lap record pace in Valencia The World Champion flew to the top of the timesheets to lead Practice 1 ahead of Vietti and Aldeguer It's been a happy homecoming so far for the World Champion Pedro Acosta (Red Bull KTM Ajo) as the Spaniard bettered the lap record by three-tenths to top the pile after the opening session of the Gran Premio Motul de la Comunitat Valenciana. Acosta's 1:34.024 saw him beat Celestino Vietti (Fantic Racing) by 0.111s as the Italian settled for 2nd place. Continuing his strong run off form to cap off the 2023 season, Fermin Aldeguer (CAG SpeedUp) was in the mix as well he took his Triumph-powered Boscoscuro machine to 3rd place, with the top four all underneath the previous lap record. With the pace hotter than ever, Aron Canet (Pons Wegow Los40) was next up in 4th as the Valencian missed out on the top three by just 0.015s. Tony Arbolino (Elf MarcVDS Racing Team) rounded out the top five just ahead of his teammate Sam Lowes who took P6 - the British rider beginning his final weekend as a full-time Grand Prix rider.

Mat Oxley Martin a close second. Bagnaia seems a bit unsettled, which is unusual, and he's out of Q2, which is a bad place to be. But he's dug himself out of this hole before. Q2 ten separated by four tenths!

Martin mind games see Bagnaia face Q1 with Viñales top A tantalising Valencia Practice plays out as the Championship leader finishes P15, with Martin second fastest behind lap-record holder Viñales The heat has been turned up in the title battle as a huge Saturday at the Gran Premio Motul de la Comunitat Valenciana awaits, with Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) finding himself in Q1 following mind games from Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing). The latter ended the day in a safe and sound P2, Bagnaia was a surprising P15, while Maverick Viñales (Aprilia Racing) set the pace thanks to a 1:29.142 - a new Circuit Ricardo Tormo all-time lap record. Mind games aplenty The soft rubber went in early with qualifying incredibly important at the tight and twisty Valencia layout - especially for the two title protagonists. The final five minutes of the Practice session is when things got interesting though, as mind games from Martin were unravelled. Plenty of red sectors came flying in but all eyes were on the title duo who were locked together in the pitlane after being out on track together. Martin latched himself onto the back of Pecco and shadowed him around the out-lap - including running wide at Turn 8 - as Pecco tried his best to find a time to propel him into the top 10. That didn't happen on his first flyer and with time only allowing for one final lap to be laid in the session, the pressure was on Bagnaia. However, Pol Espargaro's (GASGAS Factory Racing Tech3) Turn 3 crash brought out the yellow flags, and that was that. Bagnaia ended Practice in P15, meaning Q1 awaits. Martin's tactics seemingly worked a treat as he headed straight into Q2 as the second fastest rider on track The top 15 covered by 0.659s With just over half a second covering the top 15, fine margins again made all the difference. Martin's teammate Johann Zarco enjoyed a positive day and ended Friday as one of three riders underneath the seven-year-old lap record. How crucial could Zarco's pace prove to be for the rest of the weekend for Prima Pramac Racing and Martin? Elsewhere, Fabio Di Giannantonio (Gresini Racing MotoGP™) continued his strong form to claim P4, with compatriot Marco Bezzecchi (Mooney VR46 Racing Team) - despite a crash at Turn 8 - completing the top five. Brad Binder (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) ended the 60-minute Practice stint in P6, while eight-time World Champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) gets set for a Q2 appearance following a positive day as the #93 finished Friday in seventh. Raul Fernandez (CryptoDATA RNF MotoGP™ Team), Jack Miller (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) - another crasher in Practice - and Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing) are the other riders who bagged automatic Q2 spots. What dangers face Bagnaia in Q1? The current World Champion will have to grit his teeth if he wants to fight for pole position and challenge his title rival Martin Just when we thought we had seen it all, a new script change shook up the first day of action at the Circuit Ricardo Tormo. After failing to make it into the top 15 in Practice at the Gran Premio Motul de la Comunitat Valenciana, Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati Lenovo Team) will have to compete in Q1 on Saturday as he hopes to bag himself access in the final fight for pole position, whereby his title rival Jorge Martin (Prima Pramac Racing) already has a place. Pecco will have to fight alongside some heavy hitters in Q1 including Fabio Quartararo (Monster Energy Yamaha MotoGP™), Alex Marquez (Gresini Racing MotoGP™), Luca Marini (Mooney VR46 Racing Team), and Enea Bastianini (Ducati Lenovo Team). Although it is to be expected that the latter will not overshadow his teammate, the same cannot be said for the others. We already know how much of a threat Quartararo can be. The flying Frenchman recovered back from 13th on the grid to bag a Top 5 finish in Qatar, whilst Alex Marquez and Luca Marini already know what it takes to take pole position, as they already have done this season. All three riders are not to be underestimated and could prove to be thorns in the side of the World Champion. However, in the event that Ducati's golden boy fails to make the Q2 cut, all would not be lost. Bagnaia has proven he can win from outside the top 12, after taking victory in Indonesia from P13. The Valencia GP promises nail-biting action in qualifying on Saturday before Pecco himself heads out for his first match point during the Tissot Sprint.

Mat Oxley Quartararo asked what he thinks of Martin’s tactics with Bagnaia this pm. He ummed & arrred. A journo offered “being a pain in the ass?” “Yes, that’s his job and he’s doing it very well,” he replied. Martin said, “ I was letting him know I’m there for the fight”.
