Watched most all the hours of Practices and Qualifications.
To my recollection - only 2 or 3 cars 'brushed' the walls with no serious incidents.
The Curmudgeon in me makes me think two things - the cars have too much aero down force - the cars don't have enough power.
Race tracks ARE NOT SUPPOSED to be able to be run flat footed through all the turns. To do Indy 'right' that is required.
Cars should be doing 250-260 near the entrance to Turns #1 & #3, and brake or lift to get into those turns at 240 +- to get through the turns.
Racing is about the car being faster than any of the turns it encounters on track, and the best driver/car combination gets through the turns consistently better than the competition.
While I think the group of IndyCar drivers today are the most skilled, as a entire group, that have competed on track in my lifetime. In past years/decades you had a handful of fully skilled drivers, that given reasonable equipment, always had the ability to be at the top of the time sheets. The rest of those fields, however, were punching above their weight just to get into Gasoline Alley let alone behind the wheel of cars on track.

30 years later a Rahal gets bumped from an Indy 500 race. What a coincidence. Bobby Rahal got bumped because his Truesports chassis is an absolute turd. Graham Rahal got bumped by his own teammate. I thought Bobby got bumped that year because his new Honda power plant couldn't cut the mustard.

Safety team taking time with Stef, hopefully just an overabundance of caution.

I thought Bobby got bumped that year because his new Honda power plant couldn't cut the mustard. Ooops! Double-checked and indyfan2 has it right - it was the tub. It was the chassis in '93. It was the Honda lump in '94. They ended up leasing a couple of year old cars from Penske, and got to return the favor and loaned out a car to Penske the next year when Penske couldn't get his cars up to speed.

Wilson out with fractured vertebrae. www.indycar.com/news/2023/05/05-22-wilson-outBritish driver Wilson suffered a fracture of the 12th thoracic vertebrae and will remain overnight at IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for further tests and observation, according to a statement from Dreyer & Reinbold Racing/Cusick Motorsports. The team will release more information about its plans “in due course,” the statement said.

Does "in due course" mean Bobby is sharpening the pencil to write a check for Graham to drive the car?

^that sucks Conventional wisdom here points to Paddock Jesus (Hildebrand). DRR's Chevy engine would be problematic for Graham I would think. But Hildebrand's hurdle would be needing to complete the refresher, I wonder if IndyCar would add a session on Thursday or Friday for this. JR has passed his physical for this year, just couldn't get a ride put together.

There's also Sage Karam. Out of respect for their sponsors they should field a car.

racer.com/2023/05/23/rahal-to-replace-wilson-at-drr-for-indianapolis-500/Graham Rahal was offered by the team, and he's accepted. As Marshall Pruett tweeted a few times yesterday, Graham and Justin were pals, and his family certainly did not forget what Graham did for them in their hour of need when Justin perished. He spearheaded the auction that raised over $600K for the daughters of Justin. This is a close family friend, and as tough as it is to hear of Stefan's injury, and on the heels of Graham's gutting on Sunday, it's become a truly special story now. NBC will likely devote a fair amount of time to it I'm sure.

I'm thinking Stef himself was pushing for Rahal based on the past history. No offense to Sage, because Sage has history too with Stef and an entirely different story arc. Stef has done the groundwork every year to get funding for his ride, it's not some Pfizer drug or tobacco vape pen. I admit being an asshole by nature as far as my criticism for Graham, but this is an unfortunate but wholesome turn of events. I wish the team and Graham well, I would not be surprised at all that circumstances put him in the mix at the end. Stranger things have happened.
