Ducati crowned Manufacturers’ Champions after Race 1 at Phillip Island Saturday, 19 November 2022 They’ve done the triple, they’re taking the titles home: a phenomenal year sees Ducati take the Manufacturers’ title and the Teams’ title, just a week after the Riders’ title Whilst Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) stole the show and returned to winning ways after a six-month dry spell, it was Ducati who clinched the Manufacturers’ Championship in Race 1 of the Grand Ridge Brewery Australian Round. The Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit made its highly anticipated return and WorldSBK action was back with a bang Down Under with an unpredictable flag-to-flag thriller. Despite being off the podium, newly-crowned World Champion Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) came home fifth, good enough to seal the deal for Ducati as they take a first Manufacturers’ title since 2011, whilst it also gave Aruba.it Racing – Ducati the teams’ title too. 595 points scored so far have helped the legendary Italian manufacturer cement their status as the greatest manufacturer in WorldSBK statistical history, wrapping up an 18th Manufacturers’ crown in their illustrious time in the paddock. Bautista, teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi and Best Independent Rider for 2022, Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) all contributed to the staggering tally, taking turns to come home as the best Ducati on their day. On the podium in a mesmerising 30 out of 34 races run so far this year, Ducati have been dominant in their bid to bring the title back to Bologna. Having wrapped up the Riders' title in Indonesia with Bautista, attention swiftly turned to the Manufacturers’ and whilst they missed out on a rostrum, 14 wins – all courtesy of Bautista – coupled with podiums for Rinaldi and top five showings for Bassani have meant that Ducati built up what was to turn out to be unassailable points gap to defending Champions Yamaha. Speaking about the success, Ducati Corse’s General Manager Luigi Dall’Igna spoke highly of the manufacturer’s latest success in 2022: “After Alvaro Bautista's won the World Superbike Riders' Championship, being able to get the Manufacturers’ Championship as well is a further source of pride for us. It is an important goal, which repays all the efforts and the work done with great commitment, passion and dedication by the men and women of Ducati Corse. It is our 18th Manufacturers’ title in WorldSBK, and it is the first one obtained with our Panigale V4 R, a bike that has given us great satisfaction since 2019. As always, however, special thanks go to all the Ducati riders who were able to interpret it at its best and who, with their results, have allowed us to achieve this historic success. Congratulations also to the Aruba.it Racing - Ducati team for winning the title of best WorldSBK team this season.” Alvaro Bautista also joined in on the praise and was proud to be an integral part in what has turned out to be one of the strongest combinations in recent years: “For sure, we won today two more Championships. The Manufacturers’ Championship with Ducati, they did the double triple this year as they won everything in MotoGP™ and here in WorldSBK as well. I’m so proud to be part of that. Also, as a team, we won the title so I’m so happy because Michael also had an incredible season. He is almost fourth in the Championship so he’s after the titanic trio, so I’m happy for him, for the team and I think it has been an amazing year for the whole of Ducati, in both the Championship and also for me personally. It’s been one of the best years of my career.”

Montella claims maiden WorldSSP victory in wet-weather Race 1 as Caricasulo crashes from second place Saturday, 19 November 2022 The rain hit before Race 1 and there was a new winner in the Championship as Yari Montella claimed his first race win A pre-race rain shower at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit had a dramatic impact on Race 1 for the FIM Supersport World Championship and there was a brand-new winner in the Championship as Yari Montella (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) claimed his first podium and first win of the season after a race-long with Federico Caricasulo (Althea Racing), who crashed on the last lap to finish in seventh place during the Grand Ridge Brewery Australian Ride. A NEW WINNER: Montella on the top step Montella enjoyed his best Tissot Superpole result of the season with third and he converted that into his first podium and victory after a race-long battle with Caricasulo, which culminated on the final lap when Caricasulo crashed. Montella made a first move for the lead on Lap 5 when he went around the outside of Caricasulo at Turn 9 to move into first place, before Caricasulo responded at Turn 1 on Lap 13. The pair switched positions again on Lap 15 at Turn 1 as Montella went through before Caricasulo re-gained the lead on Lap 17 at Turn 3. On Lap 18, the final lap, Montella made a move on Caricasulo as he cut back through Turn 2, before Caricasulo crashed at Turn 4; he finished the race in seventh. Caricasulo’s crash promoted Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team) into second place, almost three seconds down on Montella, while Montella’s teammate, Can Oncu, took third place and secured the same position in the Championship. Bulega had initially dropped down in the early stages of the race before battling back to third and it looked like he was going to catch the leading pair, but Montella and Caricasulo were able to stabilize the gap. Montella became the tenth different winner for Kawasaki in WorldSSP and the 16th Italian winner in the Championship, while it was also Kawasaki’s first victory in the Championship since Indonesia last year. With his maiden podium, he put Italy on 150 podiums in the Championship, before Beluga’s second place made it 151 with his ninth podium of the season. Oncu took the 11th podium of his career with third. ROUNDING OUT THE TOP SIX: the Champion in fifth Lorenzo Baldassarri (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) finished in fourth place after a battle with his title rival Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha), with the Swiss rider in fifth. At the end of the race, the pair were separated by five seconds but that was only after Baldassarri passed Aegerter on the run into Turn 1. They were ahead of Raffaele De Rosa (Orelac Racing VerdNatura WorldSSP) in sixth place, who was three seconds down on Aegerter at the end of the race after starting Race 1 from eighth on the grid. COMPLETING THE TOP TEN: best results and disappointment Caricasulo was able to take seventh place despite his last-lap crashed after he re-mounted his Ducati Panigale V2, as he finished six seconds down on De Rosa. He was ahead of Tom Booth-Amos (Motozoo Racing by Puccetti) with the British rider took his best result in the Championship with eighth, despite starting 19th, while Danish rider Simon Jespersen (Kallio Racing) equaled his best result of the season with ninth. Adrian Huertas (MTM Kawasaki) rounded out the top ten. POINTS IN RACE 1: completing the top 15 Dutch rider Glenn van Straalen (EAB Racing Team) took 11th after battling back from 15th on the grid while home hero Oli Bayliss (BARNI Spark Racing Team) was 12th in Race 1 for his home round. Peter Sebestyen (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) was 13th after he fought back from running onto the grass on the exit of Turn 1 on Lap 1, while Stefano Manzi (Dynavolt Triumph) scored two points with 14th place despite a Lap 1 crash on the exit of Miller corner, the Turn 4 right-hand hairpin. Luca Bernardi (CM Racing) took his first points in the Championship since his return towards the end of the season, with 15th place. Only two riders were classified at the end of the race out of the points-paying positions. Andy Verdoia (GMT94 Yamaha) was 17th, eight seconds away from scoring points, while Leonardo Taccini (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) was the last classified rider in 17th place. HOUSEKEEPING: to note from Race 1 Niki Tuuli (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) did not complete the opening lap of the race. It was a disastrous start to the race for the Dynavolt Triumph team with both riders crashed on the opening lap. Manzi crashed on the exit of the Turn 4 Miller corner hairpin and re-joined the race to finish in while Hannes Soomer crashed at Turn 10 on the same lap. Although he re-joined, he brought his machine back into the pits and retired from the race. Unai Orradre (MS Racing Yamaha WorldSSP) crashed out of the race at Turn 8 on Lap 4, while wildcard Marcel Schroetter (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) crashed out on the exit of Miller corner on Lap 6. Ondrej Vostatek (MS Racing Yamaha WorldSSP) was another rider who crashed out of the race, with the Czech rider crashing at Turn 5 on Lap 7. The top six following WorldSSP Race 1, full results here: 1. Yari Montella (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) 2. Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team) +2.706s 3. Can Oncu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) +5.889s 4. Lorenzo Baldassarri (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) +7.223s 5. Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) +12.212s 6. Bautista fends off Rea for victory at Phillip Island in red flagged Race 2 Sunday, 20 November 2022 2022 Champion Alvaro Bautista took his 16th win of the season in a shortened race that ended the season after a thrilling encounter The final race of the 2022 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship race was ended early following a red flag at the end of Lap 18 with Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) taking a hard-fought Race 2 victory at the Phillip Island Grand Prix Circuit for the Grand Ridge Brewery Australian Round. He fended off Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) throughout the full race as he secured his 16th win of the season. BAUTISTA VS REA: ending the season with a hard battle Bautista started from pole position following his Tissot Superpole Race victory earlier on Sunday and he finished there at the end of the race, but it was far from straight forward for the Spanish rider. Bautista did lose ground at the start but worked his way past Scott Redding (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team), who fought his way into second place in the early laps, with Bautista passing him at Turn 2 for third place before he overtook Rea at Turn 1 on Lap 7. Rea did not let Bautista pull away from him though and always stayed within one second of Bautista, but he was unable to overtake the 2022 Champion, with Bautista holding on by 0.357s when the results were taken from. The race was red flagged after a collision involving Xavi Fores (BARNI Spark Racing Team) and Eugene Laverty (Bonovo Action BMW) at Turn 1, with Laverty taken to the medical centre for a check-up following the crash but he was conscious. Laverty was diagnosed with a pelvic injury and taken to Alfred Hospital in Melbourne by helicopter for further assessments. Behind the duo, there was a battle brewing for third place between Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) and Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) with Lowes coming out on top, after he made the move at Turn 1 at the start of Lap 15. It meant Bautista took his 16th win of the year, matching his total from 2019, while he now has 32 career wins; putting him level with Chaz Davies and Razgatlioglu. Rea moves on to 245 career podiums with second place while Lowes now has 33 rostrum visits to his name. FIERCE FIGHTS: the battle to end on a high Despite being in the lead group, Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) took fourth place after he passed by, with Lowes moving into the podium position and demoting the 2021 Champion, his last race with the #1 plate, until fourth place. Two Pata Yamaha riders finished in the top five with Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) taking fifth place to end his season in the top five. Redding had been in the podium places in the opening laps of the 18-lap encounter, but he dropped back as the race progressed to sixth place. ROUNDING OUT THE TOP TEN: strong results to round out 2022 Seventh place went to Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) as the second-best Ducati in Race 2, ahead of Philipp Oettl (Team Goeleven) who finished as the top Independent rider in the final race of the year. Tetsuta Nagashima (Team HRC) rounded out a strong debut weekend as he stood in for Iker Lecuona with ninth place, while Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW) took tenth place as prepares for a second season with the independent BMW outfit. POINTS IN RACE 2: inside the top 15 Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) had been running inside the top ten during the early stages of the race but dropped down to 11th place, just ahead of Michael van der Mark (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) in 12th place. Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) rounded out his Kawasaki Puccetti career with 13th place, while Czech rookie Oliver Konig (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) backed up his point from Indonesia with 14th place and two more points in Race 2 in Australia. Leandro Mercado (MIE Racing Honda) took home the final point of 2022 as he finished in 15th place. Kohta Nozane (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) ended his WorldSBK career with 17th place, finishing ahead of Hafizh Syahrin (MIE Racing Honda Team) and Kyle Smith (TPR Team Pedercini Racing) in 18th; the last classified rider in Race 2. HOUSEKEEPING: to note from Race 2 Garrett Gerloff’s (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) Yamaha career ended when he crashed at Turn 2 on the opening lap, after an incident with Xavi Vierge (Team HRC), with the Spanish rider able to re-join the but he brought his bike into the pits and re-joined the race two laps down in 21st place; he was classified as retired after completing 13 laps. Eugene Laverty: Sorry for the lack of updates following my crash. I preferred to wait until I got the all clear from the internals med team this morning so after 43 hours I’m plenty ready for a meal! I’ve been very fortunate that my pelvic and hip fractures are stable so no surgery required.
