Razgatlioglu claims WorldSBK Race 1 victory at Portimao as Rea, Bautista completes the podium in shortened race Reigning Champion Razgatlioglu fought with Rea in the first half of the race before Rea and Bautista battled for second place A shortened Race 1 for the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship did not give any less drama at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve for the Pirelli Portuguese Round, as the top three in the Championship standings battled at various points over the podium places. In the end, it was Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) who claimed victory ahead of Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) at the end of the 14-lap battle. FIGHTING FOR THE PODIUM: Razgatlioglu vs Rea followed by Bautista vs Rea With the race shortened following a delay after a crash in the WorldSSP300 Race 1 encounter and waiting for the medical helicopter to return to the circuit, the 26-strong field battled it out over 14 laps for Race 1 honours. It was reigning Champion Razgatlioglu who took victory in the shortened battle after a fight with Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) in the first half of the race. Razgatlioglu’s race winning move came at the start of Lap 6 at Turn 1 as he passed Rea, while he also had to fight Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) for second in the opening few laps. Bautista had to fight from fourth on the grid, and lost time at the start of the race, but was able to move up to second place by the end of the race as he passed Lowes at Turn 1 on Lap 3 and Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) on Lap 11 at the same corner. Bautista had to make the move twice as, when he made it on Lap 8, he ran wide at Turn 1 and cost himself time. Bautista’s crucial move for second place came at the end of Lap 11 and start of Lap 12, as he blasted past Rea on the pit straight for second place, with Rea claiming third spot in Race 1. Victory for Razgatlioglu gave him the 27th win of his WorldSBK, putting him level with Doug Polen and Bautista in the all-time standings while it was also his 73rd podium and 20th of the 2022 season. Bautista’s second place means he is one shy of 50 podiums in WorldSBK and put him level with Carlos Checa as the Spanish rider with most podiums. Third place for Rea continues his winless drought, now at 16 races, but he did claim Kawasaki’s 510th podium in WorldSBK. BASSANI FIGHTS FOR THE PODIUM: starting strong, dropping back As seen so often in 2022, Bassani was in the podium fight throughout the first half of the race but dropped back as the race progressed, eventually finishing in fourth place. He had to continue fighting once dropping out of the podium places, fighting against Lowes with the pair separated by just 0.091s at the line. Lowes had been running as high as second in the opening laps but, like Bassani, dropped back for fifth place. Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) took sixth place, four seconds behind Lowes and four seconds ahead of Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) in seventh. ROUNDING OUT THE TOP TEN: a three-rider fight for eighth Three riders were fighting hard for eighth place in the shortened race with the trio separated by less than half-a-second at the end of the 14-lap race. Xavi Vierge (Team HRC) took home eighth place ahead Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW) in ninth and American star Garrett Gerloff (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) who rounded out the top ten. Baz was just 0.160s behind Vierge as they crossed the line, while Gerloff was a further 0.269s down on Vierge. TAKING HOME POINTS: completing the top 15 Gerloff had a more than three-second margin to Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) who took 11th place in his first WorldSBK race at Portimao, ahead of Philipp Oettl (Team Goeleven). Oettl started the race where he finished in 12th place, finishing just over a second clear of Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) in 13th place. BMW pair Michael van der Mark (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) and Eugene Laverty (Bonovo Action BMW) rounded out the points-scoring positions with 14th and 15th respectively. THE CLASSIFIED RUNNERS: finishing Race 1 Roberto Tamburini (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team) just missed out on points with 16th place, only 0.389s behind Laverty who took the final point in Race 1. Luca Bernardi (BARNI Spark Racing Team) was 17th and around a second away from points at Portimao, with the Sammarinese rider finishing almost three seconds clear of Scott Redding (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team). Redding had been running inside the top ten but a last-lap crash at Turn 5 dropped him down the order to 18th place. Two-time American superbike champion Jake Gagne (Attack Performance Yamaha Racing) was 19th on his return to WorldSBK racing, finishing four tenths down on Redding. Moto2™-bound Japanese rider Kohta Nozane (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) was 20th, ahead of wildcard Marvin Fritz (IXS – Yart – Yamaha). Fritz had finished ahead of Nozane but was penalised with a one-position drop for exceeding track limits at Turn 4 on the final lap, with the German rider finishing ahead of Christophe Ponsson (Gil Motor Sport-Yamaha), Leandro Mercado (MIE Racing Honda Team) and Oliver Konig (Orelac Racing VerdNatura WorldSSP). Argentinean rider Mercado had to take a Long Lap Penalty in Race 1. HOUSEKEEPING: to note from the first WorldSBK at Portimao Malaysian rider Hafizh Syahrin (MIE Racing Honda Team) was the first retirement of the race when he suffered a technical issue on his Honda machine, pulling off the track at Turn 14 at the end of Lap 3. Leon Haslam (TPR Team Pedercini Racing) was the second retirement from the race, with the British rider bringing his bike into the pits and retiring from the race. The top six following WorldSBK Race 1, full results here: 1 Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) 2. Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) +0.657s 3. Razgatlioglu resists Bautista's Ducati power for stunning Portimao Superpole Race win The reigning Champion was under pressure and attack for every single lap of the race as he doubled up on Portimao wins Under immense pressure throughout the Tissot Superpole Race in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship, Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) took a stunning victory at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve for the Pirelli Portuguese Round. The battle lasted all ten laps during the race with Razgatlioglu winning by just 0.123s ahead of Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) at the end of the race. RAZGATLIOGLU VS BAUTISTA: the top two fight it out Razgatlioglu took the holeshot at the start of the race to move into the lead of the race but was under constant pressure from Championship leader Bautista, who moved from fourth to second at the start of the race. Bautista looked to move past Razgatlioglu on every lap, using the Ducati power down the pit straight, but Razgatlioglu resisted this into the Turn 1 braking zone to hold on for victory by just 0.123s. Six-time Champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) had initially been in the fight for victory but dropped back as the race progressed, finishing in third place and more than a second back from Bautista. It means the front row for Race 2 will be made up of Razgatlioglu, Bautista and Rea. ON THE SECOND ROW: a prime seat for the podium scrap Rea finished just half-a-second clear of teammate Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) with Lowes in fourth place, meaning he will start from the second row of the grid. Lowes will be joined on that row by Italian duo Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) and Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) as they look to fight their way into the podium scrap in Race 2. STARTING RACE 2 FROM THE THIRD ROW: only just missing out… Bassani was involved in a fierce battle with Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) at the end of the race, with Locatelli missing out on sixth place by just 0.098s at the end of the race. He had a more than five second margin to Michael van der Mark (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) who took his first top-ten finish since Assen after starting from 20th. Van der Mark was the only BMW rider on the grid to run the harder SC0 tyre and it paid off, as he finished ahead of Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW). Baz finished ninth as the highest rider using the SCX tyre, although he had to fend off Xavi Vierge (Team HRC) on the race to the line; the pair were separated by 0.069s. TO NOTE: housekeeping from the Superpole Race Garrett Gerloff (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) crashed out of the race at Turn 3 which put the Yamaha rider out of the race, when he had been fighting for a place on the front three rows in Race 2. Gerloff was taken to the medical centre for a check-up following the crash. Roberto Tamburini (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team) brought his bike into the pits in the first half of the race to retire from the race. The top nine following WorldSBK’s Tissot Superpole Race, full results here: 1 Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) 2. Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) +0.123s 3. Bautista beats Razgatlioglu in Portimao thriller after WorldSBK Race 2 scrap Alvaro Bautista took victory in a hard-fought Race 2 victory after a thrilling battle with Toprak Razgatlioglu Race 2 in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship was won by Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) after a thrilling scrap at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve during the Pirelli Portuguese Round. The Championship leader had to battle with both Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) and Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) in order to take his first win of the weekend and extend his Championship lead. THE TOP THREE FIGHT: Bautista comes out on top Bautista started Race 2 from second place, but it was Rea who took the lead of the race into Turn 1 while Bautista dropped to third and Razgatlioglu dropping to second. On Lap 7, Razgatlioglu made a move on Rea at Turn 1 to move into the lead while, two laps later at the same corner, Rea moved back into the lead as Razgatlioglu dropped to third behind Bautista. As the halfway distance approached, Bautista made a move at Turn 10 to take the lead, while Razgatlioglu followed him into second place after passing Rea. As the final third approached, Razgatlioglu set about closing in on Bautista and made a move on the Championship leader at Turn 13 on Lap 14, but, at the start of the next lap, Bautista was able to pass the reigning Champion down the pit straight to re-take the lead. From there, Bautista was able to open up a gap of over two seconds to Razgatlioglu as he took his 28th win, all on Ducati, as he goes level with Chaz Davies for wins with Ducati in WorldSBK and the 12th of his 2022 campaign. It also gave Bautista his 24th podium this season, equalling his best season record from his rookie season in 2019. Razgatlioglu claimed his 75th podium which puts him level with Colin Edwards and Marco Melandri at ninth in the all-time list of WorldSBK podiums, while Rea took his 236th podium in WorldSBK and his 24th at Portimao; putting the Portuguese venue level with MotorLand Aragon at the circuit where the six-time Champion has the most podiums. RINALDI VS LOWES: the battle for fourth Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) took fourth place after starting the race fighting over the podium places but losing ground as the race progressed. Rinaldi had to battle with Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) with the British rider claiming fifth spot, only 0.573s down on Rinaldi, as Lowes took his third top-five finish of the Portuguese Round. Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) rounded out the top six as he finished in sixth place, but almost seven seconds down on Lowes after 20 laps. ROUNDING OUT THE TOP TEN: a fierce fight Scott Redding (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) took seventh place as he battled his way up the order, finishing just under a second clear of Xavi Vierge (Team HRC).At the halfway point of the race, Redding was battling with Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) but a crash for Lecuona at Turn 14 dropped him down the order to 22nd place, where he finished. Garrett Gerloff (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) was ninth, three tenths behind Vierge, although he was able to get the better of his 2023 teammate, Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW) as the Frenchman rounded out the top ten. TAKING POINTS: leave Portimao with more points in the pocket Philipp Oettl (Team Goeleven) was another rider who was in the battle with Gerloff and Baz, with the German rookie finishing 0.291s behind in 11th place. Michael van der Mark (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) was unable to convert his third-row start into a top-ten finish as he took 12th place, ahead of Luca Bernardi (BARNI Spark Racing Team). Bernardi, who will finish the 2022 season in WorldSSP, secured points on his last WorldSBK race of the season with 13th, as did Roberto Tamburini (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team) as he took 14th place. The final point went to two-time American Superbike champion Jake Gagne (Attack Performance Yamaha Racing) who finished in 15th place on his return to WorldSBK. FINISHING THE RACE: missing out on points Eugene Laverty (Bonovo Action BMW) rounded out his ‘home’ round, as Laverty lives in Portugal, just outside the points with 16th place. Wildcard Marvin Fritz (IXS – Yart – Yamaha) was 2.3 seconds down on Laverty in 27th place, while Christophe Ponsson (Gil Motor Sport – Yamaha) and MIE Racing Honda Team duo Hafizh Syahrin and Leandro Mercado rounded out the top 20. Ponsson, Syahrin and Mercado were separated by just a few tenths at the end of the race. Kohta Nozane (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) was 21st ahead of Lecuona and Oliver Konig (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) who was the last classified rider. HOUSEKEEPING: to note from Race 1 Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) crashed out of the race on Lap 2 at Turn 5, which put him out of the race, while Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) crashed out at Turn 12 on Lap 4. Leon Haslam (TPR Team Pedercini Racing) took his Kawasaki machine into the pits in the early stages of the race and retired from the race. The top six following WorldSBK Race 2, full results here: 1. Razgatlioglu: "Everybody was pushing on the limit… we take good points for the Championship!" Reigning Champion Toprak Razgatlioglu was involved in thrilling battles throughout Sunday’s racing action against Alvaro Bautista It was a successful Sunday for Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) in the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship as he claimed victory in the Tissot Superpole Race before finishing second in Race 2 at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve. Both races featured hard-fought battles with Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) as Razgatlioglu looked to gain ground on Bautista in the title race. The ten-lap Superpole race on Sunday morning featured Razgatlioglu resisting Bautista’s pressure for the entirety of the race, with Razgatlioglu having to defend into Turn 1 consistently throughout the race. Bautista was able to get alongside, and briefly past, on the long start-finish straight at Portimao but Razgatlioglu’s strength on the brakes into Turn 1 allowed him to stay ahead, with the pair separated by just 0.123s as they crossed the line after ten laps of fierce racing. Discussing his Superpole Race battle with Bautista, Razgatlioglu said: “In the Superpole Race, everybody was pushing the limit because it was ten laps. You don’t need to keep the rear tyre. I was also pushing on the limit, especially in the first corner. Because I knew, when Alvaro passed me, I needed to pass him because on all the straights, his bike was very fast, and this track isn’t easy to pass on. My strategy worked in the Superpole Race, but it didn’t work in Race 2.” Race 2 was a familiar story as the pair battled it out for the win, although, in the first half of the race, six-time Champion Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) was there as well. All three took turns leading the race, with Rea leading the first six laps, Razgatlioglu leading the following two and then Bautista leading from Lap 9 until the end. It looked like Razgatlioglu was going to be able to fight for the win when he caught Bautista by surprise with a Turn 13 overtake on Lap 14, but by Turn 1 on Lap 15 Bautista was back ahead. Talking about the Race 2 battle, Razgatlioglu added: “In the afternoon, Alvaro improved and came back very strong again. It wasn’t easy to pass him in Race 2, but I kept fighting for the win. In the last three laps, the front tyre started to lock. I said second place was enough. Every lap, I caught him, and, on the exit of the last corner, he got ahead again on the straight; his bike is very fast. We finished second and we take good points for the Championship.” The results of the Portuguese Round mean Bautista has a 56-point lead over Razgatlioglu in the Championship standings, with Rea a further 26 points back with three rounds remaining in the 2022 season. That provides a possible 186 points for riders to claim across the Argentinean, Indonesian and Australian Rounds that close the 2022 season with plenty still up for grabs as WorldSBK heads to three flyaway races to end the season.

Manzi takes Triumph’s first ever WorldSSP victory in hard-fought Race 1 at Portimao The Italian rider went from fourth on the grid to take his, and Triumph’s, first win in WorldSSP in a thrilling Race 1; Yamaha secure 2022 Manufacturers’ Championship Race 1 for the FIM Supersport World Championship was a historic race as British manufacturer Triumph claimed their first WorldSSP victory during the Pirelli Portuguese Round at the Autodromo Internacional do Algarve. Stefano Manzi (Dynavolt Triumph) claimed a hard-fought victory in a shortened 12-lap encounter in Portugal for his first win in the Championship, while Yamaha secured the 2022 Manufacturers’ Championship with a second-place finish. ‘NEXT GENERATION’ TO THE FRONT: Triumph win, Ducati on the podium Manzi was able to convert his best Tissot Superpole result of the season with fourth place, able to fight from the start of the race rather than fighting back for a podium finish as he had before in 2022. Manzi went defensive on the last lap which allowed Lorenzo Baldassarri (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) to close the gap which created a drag race to the line, with Manzi taking the win by just 0.011s ahead of his compatriot. The podium was locked out by Italian riders as Federico Caricasulo (Althea Racing) who took his first podium of the 2022 season and the 23rd in his career. Victory for Manzi meant Triumph became the seventh different manufacturer to win in WorldSSP history, while he became the 57th different WorldSSP winner. Baldassarri took his 14th WorldSSP podium with second place and closed the gap to Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) who finished fourth, while Caricasulo’s third place put him level with Andrew Pitt and Sam Lowes on 23 podiums in the Championship. It was also the second Italian 1-2-3 finish this season, after Race 2 at Most. Second place for Baldassarri meant Yamaha wrapped up the Manufacturers’ Championship for 2022. SO CLOSE YET SO FAR: Aegerter off the podium Reigning Champion Aegerter missed out on the podium by just 0.181s at the end of the 12-lap race as he took fourth place, finishing ahead of Niki Tuuli (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) in fifth. It means all three of the new bikes introduced for 2022 finished inside the top five in Race 1. Tuuli was just under two seconds away from victory at the end of the hectic Race 1, with the Finn finishing around a second ahead of Raffaele De Rosa (Orelac Racing VerdNatura WorldSSP) was sixth after battling his way up the field for a top six finish. COMPLETING THE TOP 12: a strong result heading into Sunday Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha) had been fighting for the podium positions but a mistake on the last lap dropped him down to seventh place, a second behind De Rosa, but he still had a three-second margin over Estonian rider Hannes Soomer (Dynavolt Triumph) in eighth, with both Triumph riders securing a top-ten finish in Race 1. There was a three-way fight for ninth place at the end of Race 1 as Can Oncu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) finished as the lead Kawasaki rider in ninth, just 0.041s ahead of Isaac Vinales (D34G Racing) and a further 0.029s ahead of Bahattin Sofuoglu (MV Agusta Reparto Corse). Despite Vinales finishing as the lead WorldSSP Challenge rider, Sofuoglu wrapped up the WorldSSP Challenge title with one race to spare. TAKING HOME POINTS: looking to move up on Sunday It was a rollercoaster race for Dutch rider Glenn van Straalen (EAB Racing Team). Having fought for the podium places in the early stages of the race, he dropped down the order to 12th place as he finished almost two seconds ahead of Yari Montella (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing). The Italian rider ran wide through the first three corners on the opening lap which dropped him down the order, forcing him to fight back up to 13th place. Peter Sebestyen (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) took 14th place ahead of Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team) in 15th. Bulega was unable to set a lap time in the Tissot Superpole session but was able to fight back to take points in the shortened race. TO NOTE: housekeeping from Race 1 Replacement rider Meikon Kawakami (MS Racing Yamaha WorldSSP), standing in for Unai Orradre, crashed on the exit of Turn 5 on the opening lap of the race which put the Brazilian rider out of the race. Marcel Brenner (VFT Racing) was the second retirement of the race when he suffered a technical issue on Lap 4. Adrian Huertas (MTM Kawasaki) brought his machine back into the pits just past the halfway mark to retire from the race. Wildcard Tom Edwards (Yart – Yamaha WorldSSP) took a tumble at Turn 13 on Lap 10, putting him out of the race. The top six following WorldSSP Race 1, full results here: 1. Stefano Manzi (Dynavolt Triumph) 2. Lorenzo Baldassarri (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) +0.011s 3. Federico Caricasulo (Althea Racing) +0.128s 4. Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) +0.181s 5. Niki Tuuli (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) +1.732s 6. Raffaele De Rosa (Orelac Racing VerdNatura WorldSSP) +2.638s
