"For me, P5 isn’t enough" – what went wrong for Razgatlioglu in Race 1? The reigning Champion made a lightning start from eighth on the grid to second by Turn 1, but dropped back as the race progressed It was a thrilling MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship battle in Race 1 for the Catalunya Round and reigning Champion Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) had a rollercoaster day at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya as he finished fifth in Race 1 from eighth on the grid, with Razgatlioglu losing a lot of time and places in the latter stages of the 20-lap battle despite an incredible start from the third row. The Turkish star could only manage eighth in the Tissot Superpole session, ended a streak of 13 Superpole sessions where he finished inside the top three, meaning he would have to produce one of his traditional lightning starts to be in the podium fight from the start in Race 1. He duly delivered this and was second by the time the field reached Turn 1 on Lap 1 and initially put Championship leader and Race 1 winner Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) under pressure as he looked to continue his incredible run of form. However, things did not transpire like that for the reigning Champion and his pace began to slow in the second half of the race. Despite running in second until Lap 17, the reigning Champion continued to lose positions as he was passed by Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) on Lap 17 at Turn 4, demoting Razgatlioglu to third, Garrett Gerloff (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) on Lap 18 at Turn 1, pushing the 2021 Champion to fourth and then Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) on Lap 19 of 20 at Turn 10. Razgatlioglu’s pace in the race starting in the low 1’42s bracket and dipped into the 1’41.9s bracket on Lap 4, but he was unable to continue this throughout the race. By Lap 8, his times had dropped into the high 1’42s before dropping further into the 1’43s on Lap 10. He was able to maintain pace in this bracket until Lap 14, but it turned into lap times of 1’44s, 1’45s and 1’46s by the end of the race. In contrast, Bautista’s lap times were consistently in the 1’42s until Lap 14 when he entered the 1’43s bracket, with Lap 19 a 1’44 from Bautista and Lap 20 a 1’46; which included him rolling off the throttle as he approached the line to celebrate his win. Explaining what went wrong for him in Race 1, Razgatlioglu said: “In the race, I had a very good start but the end wasn’t fantastic because of a fifth position finish. In the last ten laps, I felt the rear tyre have a big drop. I keep fighting for a good position. For me, P5 isn’t enough. Tomorrow, we will try to improve. For me, in this race it was a big problem. I tried to follow Bautista and lap times were very fast, 41’9 and low 42s. I think I used the rear tyre a little bit too much in the first laps, and after that it started to drop. Tomorrow, my plan is to start calmer because the rear tyre is important in the last six laps.”

Aegerter fights for Race 1 WorldSSP victory in Barcelona as Baldassarri battles for second place The reigning Champion extended his Championship lead as he claimed victory in Barcelona, while his title rival finished in second place A shortened Race 1 for the FIM Supersport World Championship provided no less drama as Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) claimed his first win at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya after an early three-way fight in the opening stages of the 12-lap race. The results mean Aegerter extended his Championship lead as title rival Lorenzo Baldassarri (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) finished in second place. RED FLAGGED RACE 1, SHORTER RACE STILL DRAMATIC: an epic fight at the front The race was red flagged just as Lap 2 of the original race started to allow recovery of Peter Sebestyen’s (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) bike after he crashed at Turn 1 on the opening lap. Sebestyen was able to walk away from the crash but marshals needed time to clear the bike and fluids, meaning the red flag was deployed. The restarted race was reduced to a distance of 12 laps following the red flag. On the subsequent start, Federico Caricasulo (Althea Racing) got another good start to move into the lead of the race in the early stages before having to battle with Aegerter, Baldassarri and Can Oncu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing). On Lap 7, Baldassarri made his move on Caricasulo at Turn 1 to move into third before, two laps later, passing Oncu into Turn 10. Although he dropped behind both of them shortly after, Baldassarri made his decisive move at Turn 1 on Lap 12 to take second place ahead of Oncu in third and Caricasulo in fourth. Victory for Aegerter gave him his 11th of 2022, only one short of Andrea Locatelli’s record of 12 in a season, and also his 29th podium; putting him level with 2017 Champion Lucas Mahias. Second place was Baldassarri’s 13th podium, moving him on terms with Jorg Teuchert and Champions Michael van der Mark and Locatelli. Aegerter took the win from pole position and set the fastest lap, meaning he took his 11th hat-trick while Oncu returned to the rostrum for his sixth podium and his first since Race 2 at Assen in April. FOUR MANUFACTURERS IN THE TOP FIVE: MV Agusta with two bikes in the top six It was a strong day for MV Agusta Reparto Corse as Bahattin Sofuoglu claimed a joint career-best fifth place in Race 1, fighting just behind the podium scrap after showing good pace throughout the Catalunya Round. He finished just 0.840s behind Caricasulo and 0.425s ahead of teammate Niki Tuuli in sixth as the Italian manufacturer enjoyed a strong Race 1; meaning with MV Agusta in fifth and sixth, four of the five manufacturers in 2022 were represented in the top five. IN THE TOP TEN: strong fightbacks Adrian Huertas (MTM Kawasaki) continued his fine rookie campaign with seventh place after a late-race battle with French rider Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha) after the Frenchman fought his way up the field to finish 8.5 seconds down on race winner Aegerter. There were also strong results for Glenn van Straalen (EAB Racing Team) in ninth and Simon Jespersen (Kallio Racing) in tenth, with van Straalen only 0.254s behind Cluzel in the three-way battle for seventh place. TAKING HOME POINTS: rounding out the top 15 Leonardo Taccini (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) took home 11th place as he led home a trio of Italian riders between 11th and 13th place, with all three separated by around a second. Raffaele De Rosa (Orelac Racing VerdNatura WorldSSP) enjoyed a strong start to the race but dropped back to 12th place at the end of the 12-lap race, a tenth ahead of compatriot Yari Montella (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) in 14th place. Oli Bayliss (BARNI Spark Racing Team) made early progress in the race but lost a bit of time, claiming 15th place at the end of the race. TO NOTE. Housekeeping from Race 1 Sebestyen did not take to the restarted race after his crash in the original race, while Stefano Manzi (Dynavolt Triumph) retired from the race on Lap 4 with a technical problem. On Lap 5, Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team) crashed at Turn 8 and, despite his best efforts to save it, was a retirement from the race. The top six following WorldSSP Race 1, full results here: 1 Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) 2. Lorenzo Baldassarri (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) +3.472s 3. Can Oncu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) +3.717s 4. Federico Caricasulo (Althea Racing) +3.857s 5. Bahattin Sofuoglu (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) +4.697s 6. Niki Tuuli (MV Agusta Reparto Corse) +5.122s Fastest lap: Dominique Aegerter (Yamaha) – 1’45.157s – New Lap Record

Home hat-trick for Bautista as he wins Race 2 from pole position, leads Ducati 1-2 The Championship leader led from the start to win Race 2, leading every single racing lap throughout the Catalunya Round Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) romped home to his third win of the Catalunya Round at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya after claiming Race 2 victory from pole position in the final MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship action of the weekend. Bautista had claimed victory in both Race 1 and the Tissot Superpole Race, and he followed that up with a lights-to-flag win in Race 2 to further extend his Championship lead. UNSTOPPABLE BAUTISTA: three from three on home soil Starting from pole position, Bautista once again led the race into Turn 1, before remaining unchallenged as he extended his gap at the front with the Championship leader able to take advantage of the squabbling behind him to claim victory. By the halfway mark of the race, Bautista’s gap had got up to five seconds and he continued to increase that throughout the second half of the race to claim victory by more than eight seconds. Behind Bautista, the battle for second was taking place between four riders. Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati), Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing), Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) all fought it out for the remaining podium places, with the pair often swapping places. In the end, it was Bautista’s teammate Rinaldi who claimed second place after a thrilling battle, with the crucial move for Rinaldi coming on Lap 11 at Turn 1, when he passed Bassani. As Rinaldi escaped in second place, Razgatlioglu, Rea and Bassani continued their fight with Rea moving into third place on Lap 14 as he passed both Razgatlioglu and Bassani into Turn 1. Razgatlioglu got ahead of Bassani on Lap 13 after the Italian rider made a mistake at Turn 12, which then allowed Rea to get ahead a lap later. However, on Lap 16, Rea lost a lot of time after running wide at Turn 7 which allowed both Bassani and Razgatlioglu through, although he did re-pass Bassani shortly afterwards, with Razgatlioglu going on to take third place. The results allowed Bautista to extend his Championship lead to 59 points over Razgatlioglu, a gain of 29 points across the weekend, as he took his first treble since Aragon 2019 and the fourth of his career. He became the first rider to take three wins at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya and he is edging closer to 50 podiums; now on 48. Rinaldi took his 14th WorldSBK podium with second place and it is the 135th time Ducati have finished 1-2, while taking their fourth straight win at the Spanish venue. Razgatlioglu’s third place gave him his 72nd podium in WorldSBK. STRONG RESULTS FROM ROOKIES: three inside the top ten… Rea, after re-passing Bassani after his mistake, was able to pull out a gap to take fourth place ahead of the Italian who took fifth place. Behind Bassani came a run of three rookies who all had a strong Race 2. Xavi Vierge (Team HRC) took sixth place after taking advantage of his Superpole Race result to finish in the top six, ahead of Philipp Oettl (Team Goeleven) in seventh place. Oettl, like Vierge, gained on the grid in the Superpole Race and took advantage to conclude a strong Catalunya Round in seventh place. He was ahead of Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) in eighth place with Lecuona, who took pole in the Tissot Superpole session, taking another top-ten finish. A LATE CHARGE: Tamburini into the top ten Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW) finished as the lead BMW rider in ninth place, finishing just 0.084s behind Lecuona at the end of the race. The end of the race was highlighted by a charge from Roberto Tamburini (Yamaha Motoxraxing WorldSBK Team) as the Italian rookie surged into the top ten in the closing stages, taking his best WorldSBK result to date. He demoted Luca Bernardi (BARNI Spark Racing Team) to 11th with just a couple of laps to go, with Bernardi running inside the top ten throughout the majority of the race; his best result since Race 2 at the Autodrom Most. COMPLETING THE POINTS: finishing inside the top 15 Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) was involved in a battle for tenth place but eventually took 12th place, finishing just 0.419s behind Bernardi at the end of the 20-lap battle. Michael van der Mark (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) was 13th ahead of fellow BMW rider Eugene Laverty (Bonovo Action BMW) in 14th and Kohta Nozane (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) who rounded out the points-paying positions with 15th. JUST MISSING OUT: the last of the classified riders Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) was classified in 16th place 20-lap race. The Italian rider was running inside the top ten but a Turn 10 crash on Lap 4 dropped him down the order after he re-joined the action, with Locatelli having to fight to take 16th place and missing out on a point by 2.6s. Argentinean rider Leandro Mercado (MIE Racing Honda Team) was 17th ahead of Czech rider Oliver Konig (Orelac Racing VerdNatura WorldSSP), the last classified rider in 18th place. HOUSEKEEPING: to note from Race 2 Two riders crashed out of the race on the opening lap with Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) going down at Turn 10 and Scott Redding (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) crashing at Turn 14; putting both riders out of the race. Redding was taken to the medical centre for a check-up following his crash, and was declared fit but diagnosed with a chest bruise. On Lap 5, Christophe Ponsson (Gil Motor Sport-Yamaha) retired from the race following a Turn 10 crash. Garrett Gerloff (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) had enjoyed a strong weekend but, in Race 2, crashed out at Turn 2 on Lap 12. Home rider Oscar Gutierrez (TPR Team Pedercini Racing) brought his Kawasaki machine into the pits to retire from the race. The top six following WorldSBK Race 2, full results here: 1. Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) 2. Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) +8.103s 3. Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) +9.090s 4. "I understood first position wasn’t possible today" – Razgatlioglu reveals plan after taking third in Race 2 The reigning Champion scored third place in Race 2 to ensure his run of podiums at every round this season continued After a difficult Saturday at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya for Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK), the reigning Champion was able to bounce back on Sunday to claim a podium in Race 2 of the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship’s visit to Spain for the Catalunya Round. He claimed third place, behind the two factory Ducati riders, to ensure he has claimed a podium in every round this season but lost ground in the Championship standings to his rival. Razgatlioglu’s Sunday started with fourth place in the Tissot Superpole Race, handing him a second row start for Race 2; four places up on where he started Race 1 on Saturday after taking eighth in the Tissot Superpole session to decide the Race 1 grid. Despite losing ground at the start in the Superpole Race, the reigning Champion was able to fight back through the field to take fourth place and hand him a higher starting position for Race 2. In Race 2, Razgatlioglu was involved in a four-rider scrap for the podium places alongside Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati), Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) and Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK). Razgatlioglu moved into the podium place on Lap 16 of 20 when he overtook Bassani before he set his sights on Rinaldi in second ahead. Although the Turkish rider was unable to catch and pass Rinaldi, he was able to maintain third place to take his first podium of the weekend. Discussing Race 2, Razgatlioglu said: “For me, it was a very difficult weekend. In Race 1, we started very well but we finished in fifth place because we were eating the rear tyre. Today, my plan, was just follow Jonny and Bassani and Rinaldi, because I know Alvaro is very fast. Today, I wanted to keep the rear tyre because I understood that first position was not possible in this race. I focused on second and third position. I am very happy that we’re back on the podium.” Razgatlioglu entered the Catalunya Round 30 points down on Championship leader Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati), but the Spaniard’s hat-trick on home soil coupled with Razgatlioglu’s results mean the reigning Champion leaves Spain 59 points down on Bautista. The Championship visits Portimao next time out with Razgatlioglu aiming to change the momentum in the standings in the last European round of the 2022 season. Evaluating the title fight, Razgatlioglu said: “I am not focused on the Championship, I am just looking race by race. Portimao is a very good track for me and also Jonny is very strong, Alvaro is very strong. We are fighting again. Argentina will be a little bit difficult because of the very long straight, which is better for the Ducati, but I will keep fighting. I love Indonesia, and I think we are fighting for the win in Indonesia. Australia, I don’t know! We have many races and the Championship is not finished.”

Bautista reacts after home hat-trick "I’m happy to have won three races… the competition is so high and more difficult!" Spanish rider Alvaro Bautista completed his first hat-trick in three years after taking two wins on Sunday in Spain Things could not have gone much better for Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) as he claimed a hat-trick of wins at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya during the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship’s Catalunya Round. After winning from fifth in Race 1 on Saturday, Bautista repeated that in Sunday morning’s Tissot Superpole Race to claim first place on the grid for Race 2 and duly won from there too to take his first hat-trick in three years. Bautista, like in Race 1, got a superb launch off the grid in the 10-lap Superpole Race to move into the lead before Turn 1 and, from there, he remained relatively unchallenged as he took his second win of the weekend and improved his starting position for Race 2 while the results of the Superpole Race allowed Bautista to extend his Championship lead over both Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) and Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK). In Race 2, Bautista led every lap like he had in Race 1 and the Superpole Race to take his first hat-trick of 2022 and his first since Aragon 2019; his fourth in total. His win gave him his 11th win of the season and he became the second rider this season to lead every single lap during a round. The only other rider to do this was Razgatlioglu when he took his first hat-trick at Donington Park back in July. It was also Bautista’s 48th podium in WorldSBK, putting him one short of Carlos Checa who has the most podiums for a Spanish rider in WorldSBK history. Reacting to his hat-trick, Bautista said: “It seems like an easy weekend but, in reality, there was nothing easy. I’m so happy to have won three races here, especially because I think the competition is so high and even more difficult than three years ago. Saturday and Sunday, in the long race, I tried to manage the tyres and keep the pace. I felt quite comfortable. Honestly, for the Superpole Race, we were missing something so, today, in the Warm Up we tried something different on the electronics to help me use the tyre more and not worry about consumption. We tried, I liked it, so I used, and it definitely helped me a lot because it gave me a hand to use the tyre more. I could be fast in the Superpole Race and fight for the win. For sure, it was closer than the other races but also, I expected more fighting, more battling for the victory.” The results of the Catalunya Round mean Bautista heads into the Portuguese Round, the final European round of the 2022 season, with a 59-point lead over Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) in second place and 67 over Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) with four rounds remaining of the 2022 season. Discussing the title battle, Bautista remained coy on his chances but said: “In the end, I don’t like to think about the Championship. I didn’t think about it at the beginning and I don’t think about it now. For me, the important thing is that I’m enjoying the bike a lot. I’m enjoying every practice, every single lap, every single race. Let’s keep this mentality and see what happens at the end. I’m just trying to enjoy the moment, celebrate the victory, to reset when things come back and just race and enjoy.”
