Back in those years CanAm, TransAm, and Formula 5000 were as big or bigger than indycar, except for the indy-500. They all raced at BIR, a road race track about 110 miles north of Minneapolis. I saw all of em race there. Then we also drove across Wisconsin to Road america to see a few of em.

The tramsam cars may have been the most fun to watch. All the auto manufacturers had a car in the series

Trans Am Racing His Needing to expand beyond amateur racing, SCCA launched Trans Am Pro series in 1966. Drivers like Dan Gurney and Mark Donahue drove Ford Mustangs, Chevrolet Camaros, Dodge Challengers, Plymouth ‘Cuda, AMC Javelins with 5.0 L V8s and factory support.

lets see. the way I remember Parelli jones and George Fulmer ran the mustangs. Donohue ran the AMC cars. At least some of the years anyways. I'd need to do a google search to remember it all. :-)

There's a story I read somewhere. When Penske / Donohue were racing the AMX, someone was looking at the car and he leaned on it with his elbow or what ever. It caved in. A big dent. The Penske guys acted surprised. :-) But they weren't. They had taken the whole body and dipped it in a acid bath to shave weight.

At Mosport, during the last century, there was an acid-dipped Pinto tha we called the "flapper" for the way it looked going around the track.
