Tuuli undergoes surgery after Estoril crash The Finn will have a recovery plan after having an operation following his Estoril Warm-Up crash The 2022 FIM Supersport World Championship’s season is well underway but there’ll be a recovery period ahead for Niki Tuuli (MV Agusta Reparto Corse), after the Finnish rider suffered a crash on Sunday morning for the Estoril Round during Warm-Up. He suffered badly broken toes after they got caught in the chain of the bike during the crash. The 26-year-old underwent surgery on his foot on Sunday but unfortunately, needed further surgery on Thursday to amputate three toes. Tuuli’s season was a solid one up until the Estoril Round, finishing all races inside the top seven until he didn’t finish Race 1 at Estoril. Posting on Instagram, Tuuli said: “Just a quick update about my condition. First surgery was on Sunday and in that operation, they tried to fix everything with nails. The damage was so bad that my toes didn’t come alive even after the surgery. The second surgery was on Thursday, and we needed to amputate my three toes unfortunately! At the moment, there’s a lot of pain and a lot more nerve pain. It looks likes on Wednesday, it will be possible to fly back home. Thanks to all for the nice messages, it means a lot to me.” Whilst the severity of Tuuli’s injury may be bad, there’s plenty of other high-profile and highly successful motorcycle racers who have gone on to great achievements following an amputation of toes or fingers. One of the most high-profile was Daryl Beattie, who after finishing third in the 500cc World Championship standings in 1993, lost all of his toes on one foot due to a crash at Le Mans in 1994, when his foot got caught in between the chain and the rear sprocket. Beattie’s best season came in 1995 though, when he finished first or second in five of the opening six races whilst on the podium in eight of the first ten, leading the Championship at points. He ultimately finished second in the Championship behind fellow countryman Mick Doohan. In WorldSBK, Australian Troy Bayliss won his third title in 2008, having lost part of his little finger in 2007 after a Donington Park crash. This shows that Tuuli’s career is far from over.

A special atmosphere awaits as a magical Misano welcomes WorldSBK Italian flare readies to host an unpredictable title fight, whilst home heroes look to take charge The 2022 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship thunders into Italy for the fourth round of the season, the Pirelli Emilia-Romagna Round at the Misano World Circuit “Marco Simoncelli”, a stone’s throw away from the picturesque Adriatic Sea. Packed grandstands, a title fight as fierce as ever and a huge home contingency ready to put on a display, Misano is one of the most anticipated rounds on the calendar, with a special atmosphere always making a fever pitch feeling throughout the paddock. With the continuous fighting from the titanic trio but gains being made behind, Misano is ready to host yet another dramatic round, but who is going to come out on top? TITANIC TRIO: which one will it be this time? Leading the Championship into Ducati’s home event, Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) is sitting pretty with a 17-point lead over his nearest rival, Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK). After four wins so far in 2022 and never once finishing off the podium, Bautista heads to Misano where he won for Ducati back in 2019 and took a top six for Honda in 2021. He took his first MotoGP™ podium at the circuit in 2012 after a last corner showdown with Andrea Dovizioso, whilst he has podiums and wins from his 250cc days too. Teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi always goes well at Misano and will be in the fight for victory, with the home-hero taking two wins last year as well as a second. Could the titanic trio about to become a fighting foursome? With 17 points between him and the top of the standings, Jonathan Rea is within striking distance of Bautista’s points lead, although Misano wasn’t the kindest to the Ulsterman in 2021. Three third places in 2021 and the start of front-end woes will hope to be a distant memory, as Rea aims for the top step at the track at which he won his first WorldSBK race at in 2009 and has gone on to win eight races at. After winning two last lap fights at Estoril, Rea’s keen to continue fighting hard and taking victories in Italy. For teammate Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK), Estoril was a solid round as he took a seventh, a sixth and a fourth, the fourth being his joint-best result of 2022. Three top six finishes at Misano in 2021 and two podiums for Yamaha before, can Lowes be a surprise? Reigning World Champion Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) looked set for victory at Estoril but was beaten in two last lap fights: the first by the power of Bautista and Ducati in Race 1 and then by his own front-end save on the final lap of the Superpole Race. Still, the opening three rounds of the season all came at tracks where Toprak didn’t win at last year, whilst Misano was where it all began last year with victory in Race 2. Toprak’s always shone at the Italian venue, having been in a battle for victory in Race 2 back in 2019 with Rea, whilst he clinched the STK600 title at the track in 2015 and chases a first win of 2022 this weekend. For his teammate Andrea Locatelli, the Italian is fourth in the standings with eight top five finishes and a podium. He only took three ninth places at Misano last year, whereas this season, he’ll have his sight on the podium. HONDA AND BMW: a Misano surprise on the horizon? It’s been a fantastic start to the season for Honda as Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) and teammate Xavi Vierge battle hard on the edge of the podium places, now consolidating their top five running. Since Estoril, they’ve both been in Japan testing for the Suzuka 8 Hour in August with Leon Camier in attendance, but now their mind will be focussed on WorldSBK. In contrast to Estoril, both riders have plenty of experience at Misano; Lecuona’s best MotoGP™ finish was 14th in 2020 and unfortunately, he’s not finished another race at the circuit since. For Vierge, he’s had four top ten finishes in Moto2™ at the track, with a best of fourth coming in 2020. Lecuona is one of just two riders to finish in the top ten in every race this year – the other is Bautista, whilst Vierge comes to Misano off the back of a career-best fifth in Race 1 at Estoril. Can Honda conquer in Italy? There seemed to be a breakthrough at Estoril for BMW, with Scott Redding (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) having a consistent ride to seventh in the opening race before a set-up change on Sunday cost the Brit of what would’ve been a very strong weekend. Nonetheless, he’s took points in the last four races and heads to the circuit where he tested at with BMW in preseason. Redding is definitely seeing some hard work pay off and hopes that continues for Misano, a track where he took a hat-trick of fourth place finishes in 2021 for Ducati. However, he’s historically been good at Misano, having taken a career-first MotoGP™ podium there in 2015, as well as a seventh in 2017. On the other side of the garage, with Michael van der Mark out through injury, Ukrainian super-sub Illia Mykhalchyk will be back, having scored a top ten at Aragon. INDEPENDENT BATTLES: a home-hero chasing a dream The battle of the Independents is fierce with Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) leading; he had a stellar Misano in 2021 when three top seven finishes with a best of sixth really put him in the spotlight. Five points further back is Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW), who had a tricky Estoril which yielded just one top ten finish, whilst Garrett Gerloff (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) is next up, although his Misano presence is to be confirmed after his Estoril FP3 crash which ruled him out with injury. Philipp Oettl (Team Goeleven) and Lucas Mahias (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) were both also declared unfit after crashes at Estoril, with Mahias still out and replaced by Tito Rabat this weekend. Eugene Laverty (Bonovo Action BMW) is 15th overall and the next Independent, chasing a top ten. Round four will be as near to a home-round as it gets for Sammarinese star Luca Bernardi (BARNI Spark Racing Team), with the rookie one to watch, especially having scored points in three of the last four races. After missing Estoril, Roberto Tamburini (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team) hopes to be back for his home round, whilst Christophe Ponsson (Gil Motor Sport-Yamaha) aims for a return to the points after missing out last time. Scoring his first points of the season in Portugal, Kohta Nozane (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) aims for more this weekend, whilst Leandro Mercado (MIE Racing Honda Team) hopes for a return to the top 15. Teammate Hafizh Syahrin continues his search for his first points, as does Oliver Konig (Orelac Racing VerdNatura). One wildcard to note is Gabriele Ruiu (Bmax Racing), who makes his third appearance of 2022. Home-hero Alessandro Delbianco (TPR Team Pedercini Racing) will make a return to WorldSBK for his home round.

Bautista blasts ahead of Razgatlioglu and Rea in WorldSBK FP2 at Misano Friday, 10 June 2022 Having been eighth in FP1, Bautista bolted himself back to the top slot in the afternoon action The 2022 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship action is at the Misano World Circuit “Marco Simoncelli” for the fourth round of the season, the Pirelli Emilia-Romagna Round, with action aplenty already on day one. Launching to the top of the timesheets, Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) was fastest on day one, getting the Ducatisti on their feet at Ducati’s home round, but he’ll have plenty of rivals behind him trying to get ahead throughout the weekend. BAUTISTA ON TOP: the titanic trio in the top three Over at Ducati, their home round got off to a great start with Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) leading their charge inside the top ten. Bautista, who won at Misano back in 2019 for Ducati, went top with just over ten minutes of the session to go before times further improved going into the final five minutes or so. Come the end of the session, Bautista was on top and particularly strong in the second half of the track, a sign of things to come perhaps ahead of the two race days. On the other side of the garage, home-hero Michael Ruben Rinaldi was also on a mission, inside the top five all day before finishing in fourth on the combined times. Aiming for a first win of the season at the track where it came in 2021, Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) was leading the Yamaha charge. Razgatlioglu was consistently faster than his rivals in the opening half of the lap but was losing time to Bautista in the final sector. Nevertheless, the reigning World Champion was strong and completed the session inside the top three, finishing second overall. Teammate Andrea Locatelli had a mighty FP1 as he took second behind Razgatlioglu but didn’t improve on his morning time in the afternoon when the temperatures came up, finishing in tenth overall, the only rider to not improve in the second session. The Kawasaki effort was strong with Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) on fine form throughout the FP2 session in the afternoon, with him getting down to a 1’34.134s straight away. Rea has great form at Misano, having taken eight wins at the circuit – including his first of his career – and worked hard throughout the session. Teammate Alex Lowes was up inside the five for the majority of the session as he continues his progress. Come the end of the day, Rea was third and Lowes was seventh, with Kawasaki solid from the start. RETURNING REVELATIONS: Oettl and Gerloff in the top six There was a good Independent charge within the top six, as Philipp Oettl (Team Goeleven) managed fifth on his return to action in WorldSBK. Having had a collarbone fracture at Estoril, Oettl looks like he’s on for another strong round this weekend, where he’ll look to crack the top six. Garrett Gerloff (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team) clinched sixth on the combined running with 44 laps across the day, more than anyone else managed. An 18-lap run in FP2 will have gathered plenty of data for the first of two race days for the American. STRENGTH FOR HONDA, BMW WOES: contrasting opening days… Another positive opening day was on the cards for Honda, with riders Iker Lecuona (Team HRC) and teammate Xavi Vierge fresh from a test at Suzuka between Estoril and Misano. Lecuona was up inside the top six in FP1 but could only manage eighth in FP2, placing him… on the combined times, with him not improving in his final laps of the day due to having lap times deleted. Vierge likewise couldn’t replicate his FP1 showing after finishing seventh, as he managed tenth in FP2. He was eleventh overall. BMW’s day wasn’t the brightest as it started with an electronics issue for Scott Redding (BMW Motorrad WorldSBK Team) before the Brit eventually got out to be on the fringes of the top ten, before finishing ninth on the combined times. A stronger afternoon sees Redding head into Saturday just over eight tenths away from Bautista at the head of the field, whilst his teammate Illia Mykhalchyk was 23rd on his return to the paddock, as he gets up to speed with the Misano circuit. TIME TO FIND AND RIDERS SHINE: rounding out the running Outside the top ten, Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) had a contrasting day; he was up inside the top five in the morning before dropping to 12th in the afternoon, one place ahead of Loris Baz (Bonovo Action BMW), with the Frenchman seemingly struggling. It was a very positive day for Christophe Ponsson (Gil Motor Sport – Yamaha), with the Frenchman strong in 14th place, ahead of Eugene Laverty (Bonovo Action BMW) and Kohta Nozane (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK Team). Nozane suffered a crash in FP1 and for failing to comply with the marshals’ instructions, was forced to miss the first ten minutes of FP2. On his comeback from injury, Roberto Tamburini (Yamaha Motoxracing WorldSBK Team) took 17th ahead of fellow countryman and wildcard Gabriele Ruiu (Bmax Racing), with the latter suffering a crash in FP2 but remounting. Alessandro Delbianco (TPR Team Pedercini Racing) was 19th on his comeback, ahead of Malaysian rookie Hafizh Syahrin (MIE Racing Honda Team), Luca Bernardi (BARNI Spark Racing Team), the returning Tito Rabat (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing), whilst Leandro Mercado (MIE Racing Honda Team) and Oliver Konig (Orelac Racing VerdNatura) rounded out the order.

Bautista: "To win here at Misano, Ducati’s home, is very special!" There was plenty of celebration for Bautista as he took a fifth win of 2022 to extend his Championship lead It was an opening race day to remember for Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) at the Misano World Circuit “Marco Simoncelli” in Italy, as he stormed to victory in Race 1. The Spaniard, who led the 2022 MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship standings coming into the Pirelli Emilia-Romagna Round, extended his lead to 22 points over nearest rival Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) after battling through to lead the race before clearing off into the distance. Having topped Friday Free Practice running, Saturday morning’s Free Practice 3 and taken a first pole for three years in Tissot Superpole, which was also Ducati’s first Misano pole since 2009, Bautista was a favourite going into the first race. Opting for an all-development compound of tyre selection with the SC1 development A0674 and the SCXB tyre spec, Bautista got beaten to the holeshot by Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) and was down to third when Jonathan Rea came through. However, soon, both were ahead of Razgatlioglu, and it was a head-to-head fight. Bautista made it through on Rea with a stunning pass at Curvone, Turn 11, before pushing clear, whilst behind it was disaster for Razgatlioglu, who retired at the end of Lap 14 with mechanical problems. Bautista crossed the line for victory on the last lap by over five seconds, with Rea second and teammate Michael Ruben Rinaldi in third. In what was Bautista’s 21st win, Ducati’s 381st and Spain’s 58th, meaning the country can move onto 60 wins on Sunday. Speaking about his incredible race winning overtake, Bautista commented: “I know that it is probably not the best place to overtake riders because the speed is so high! You take it in fifth gear at over 280km/h! I didn’t have many places to overtake Jonathan so one of them was there! I tried, I did it and I didn’t make a mistake! Everything was under control! “Today, the track was hotter than practice, so it was important to understand how much grip the track had and where the limit was. At the beginning, I stayed calm, battled a bit with Jonathan and Toprak and I could see that Toprak was struggling a bit into the corners and Jonathan had a better pace. I tried to stay behind Jonny, as I saw his pace was good, so I followed him to not use the tyre a lot. “When I saw Jonathan started to be a bit slower, I tried to get the lead and to put my pace. I started to go faster, so I’m so happy because in every moment, I was under my limit. The feeling with the bike was good and if I went faster, it was because I felt I could go faster, not because I was risking more!” The Championship leader also stated his joy about reigning victorious in Italy for Ducati at home at Misano: “To win is always special but to win here at Misano, Ducati’s home, is very special! After two years of suffering a lot, I am enjoying a lot! With all the fans coming into the paddock to celebrate the victory with! It’s fantastic to have all of them here supporting us and I hope to give them another two races of show tomorrow!”

Aegerter takes WorldSSP Race 1 win after last-lap fight, Baldassarri penalised at Misano The reigning Champion made it six wins in a row after his rival was penalised on the last lap for a track limits infringement There was no shortage of drama in Race 1 for the FIM Supersport World Championship as Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) claimed victory after rival Lorenzo Baldassarri (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) was penalised for a last-lap track limits infringement at the Misano World Circuit “Marco Simoncelli”. The results of the race at the Pirelli Emilia-Romagna Round mean Aegerter has extended his Championship lead to 49 points after just seven races so far in 2022. TOP THREE NOSE TO TAIL: decided on the final lap Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team) got a good launch off the line to move into the lead of the race and looked to pull a gap out, thanks to lap record pace in the opening laps of the race, over the chasing Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) and Lorenzo Baldassarri (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team). Despite a series of faster laps from both Aegerter and Baldassarri as the race progressed, Bulega was able to hold on to the lead of the race until Lap 17. At Turn 1 on Lap 17, Aegerter made his move into the right-hander to move into the lead of the race with just two laps to go with Baldassarri taking advantage of Bulega losing momentum to swoop around the outside of Turn 2 and into Turn 3. On the last lap, Baldassarri, at the same corner, made his move on Aegerter for the lead of the race and withstood a move from the Swiss rider at Turn 14 to hold on. However, on the exit of Turn 15, Baldassarri was adjudged to have gone on the green by the FIM WorldSBK Stewards and was demoted one place, promoting Aegerter to victory. Aegerter now has 16 wins in WorldSSP, putting him level with Andrew Pitt and Sam Lowes at 16th in the all-time list while his sixth consecutive win means he now has the second longest winning streak in WorldSSP; exceeding his best of five from last season and putting him only behind Andrea Locatelli who scored nine in 2020. Baldassarri took his sixth podium with second place, putting him level with Jonathan Rea while Bulega took his fourth podium. It means Bulega is level with Roberto Rolfo, Robbin Harms, Gianluca Nannelli and Rea’s WorldSBK Crew Chief, Pere Riba. MISSING OUT ON A PODIUM: an incredible battle for fourth The battle for fourth was decided on the line in a battle with four riders looking to finish as high up as possible. Can Oncu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) was battling with teammate Yari Montella throughout the race and the pair were involved in the scrap for fourth place, with Oncu coming home in fourth. Stefano Manzi (Dynavolt Triumph), who started ninth, battled his way up to fifth place ahead of Montella in sixth and Jules Cluzel (GMT94 Yamaha) in seventh; with just three tenths separating the four riders. TAKING HOME A TOP TEN: close battles throughout the field Matia Casadei (MV Agusta Reparto Corse), standing in for the recovering Niki Tuuli, took a top eight finish as he withstood the challenge from Swiss rider Marcel Brenner (VFT Racing) in ninth as they battled on the final lap. Spanish rookie Adrian Huertas (MTM Kawasaki) continued his impressive start to his maiden WorldSSP campaign with tenth place. SCORING POINTS: rounding out the top 15 Hannes Soomer (Dynavolt Triumph) took him 11th place as he battled with Peter Sebestyen (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) in the closing stages of the race with the Hungarian rider finishing in 12th place. Andy Verdoia (GMT94 Yamaha), returning from injury, was 13th ahead of another rider coming back from injury with Leonardo Taccini (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) in 14th. Replacement rider Nicholas Spinelli (D34G Racing), standing in for Filippo Fuligni, scored 15th place on his first race in WorldSSP. TO NOTE FROM RACE 1: housekeeping from Misano Ducati riders Raffaele De Rosa (Orelac Racing VerdNatura WorldSSP) and Oli Bayliss (BARNI Spark Racing Team) both had crashes during the race, with both bringing their bike back to the pits and returning to the race three and four laps down respectively, being classified in 22nd and 23rd. There was drama on the opening lap at Turn 8 when Bahattin Sofuoglu (MV Agusta Reparto Corse), Tom Booth-Amos (Prodina Racing WorldSSP) and wildcard Matteo Patacca (Renzi Corse) all crashed at Turn 8; with Booth-Amos and Patacca retiring from the race. Booth-Amos was taken to the medical centre and declared unfit with a right wrist fracture. The incident will be investigated by the FIM WorldSBK Stewards after the race. On the opening lap, Glenn ban Straalen (EAB Racing Team) had a technical issue and he retired from the race. Jeffrey Buis (Motozoo Racing by Puccetti) crashed out on Lap 3 at Turn 13 which put the 2020 WorldSSP300 Champion out of the race, while Ben Currie (Motozoo Racing by Puccetti) retired following a Turn 4 crash on Lap 6. Patrick Hobelsberger (Kallio Racing) retired from the race after eight laps while Federico Caricasulo (Althea Racing), Kyle Smith (VFT Racing) and Unai Orradre (MS Racing Yamaha WorldSSP) all retired. The top six following WorldSSP Race 1, full results here: 1 Dominique Aegerter (Ten Kate Racing Yamaha) 2. Lorenzo Baldassarri (Evan Bros. WorldSSP Yamaha Team) +0.006s 3. Nicolo Bulega (Aruba.it Racing WorldSSP Team) +0.080s 4. Can Oncu (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) +16.959s 5. Stefano Manzi (Dynavolt Triumph) +16.991s 6. Yari Montella (Kawasaki Puccetti Racing) +17.028s

Bouncing back in style: Razgatlioglu ends 2022 win drought with Misano Superpole Race victory After retirement from Race 1, Razgatlioglu claimed his first win of 2022 after a commanding win in Sunday’s Superpole Race Sunday’s opening race for the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship was won in style by Toprak Razgatlioglu (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK) as the reigning Champion bounced back from his Race 1 retirement at the Misano World Circuit “Marco Simoncelli” to claim victory in the Tissot Superpole Race. It meant his 11-race drought in 2022 came to end as he won by two seconds. FRONT ROW START FOR RACE 2: the top three in the Championship… Razgatlioglu got the holeshot on the opening lap of the race and from there did not look back as he claimed his first race win of the season and secure a front row start for Race 2. He was able to take advantage of an early race scrap between Alvaro Bautista (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati) and Jonathan Rea (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) scrapping to open up a gap and was unchallenged throughout the race. Bautista came home in second place ahead of Rea, with the top three in the Championship making up the front row for Race 2. It meant Razgatlioglu claimed his 19th career win and his 62nd podium, while Bautista now has 38 podiums to his name and 11 consecutive podiums from the start of the season. Rea now has 225 podiums to his name while his third place means Kawasaki now have 499 podiums, just one away from a milestone 500. STRONG RESULT FOR HONDA: starting Race 2 from row two Both Xavi Vierge (Team HRC) and teammate Iker Lecuona used Pirelli’s new-for-2022 SCQ tyre to full advantage in the Superpole Race as they fought their way up the field. Vierge finished in fourth after looking like he was going to challenge Rea for a podium, although fourth is his best result in WorldSBK, with Lecuona in fifth place. They will be joined on the second row by Andrea Locatelli (Pata Yamaha with Brixx WorldSBK), with the Italian claiming his second sixth-place finish of the round. BATTLING BACK: taking a third row start Axel Bassani (Motocorsa Racing) was able to battle his way up to seventh place to lead away the third row in Race 2, ahead of Alex Lowes (Kawasaki Racing Team WorldSBK) who lost ground at the start and was unable to fight his way back up the order. Garrett Gerloff (GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK) will start Race 2 from ninth place, with Michael Ruben Rinaldi (Aruba.it Racing – Ducati), a podium finisher in Race 1, finishing outside of the top nine after losing ground during the 10-lap race.
