Miller storms to dominant wet Friday P1, Quartararo 16th The Australian is 0.9s clear of Zarco on Day 1 at the Emilia-Romagna GP with Bagnaia inside top 10 Jack Miller (Ducati Lenovo Team) ended a wet Day 1 at the Gran Premio Nolan del Made in Italy e dell'Emilia-Romagna at the summit thanks to a superb 1:41.305 in FP2, a lap time that saw the Australian take a 0.927s advantage over Johann Zarco (Pramac Racing) into qualifying day. Aleix Espargaro (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini) left it late to claim P3 on Friday, the Spaniard is the only other rider to get within a second of Miller at Misano so far.
Rain plays a leading role as Quartararo struggles
Rain in the morning and in the early afternoon meant the premier class got plenty of wet weather running under their belts on Friday, but the sun did creep through the clouds for most of FP2, allowing conditions – and therefore times – to improve. Miller was quick to demote FP1 pacesetter Zarco to P2 as the Aussie sat over a second clear of anyone for a while in FP2, with all but two riders improving by the mid-point of the afternoon stint.
With more rain forecast for Saturday morning’s FP3, the FP2 conditions – wet, but much better than FP1 – could be the best conditions the riders face in the chase for automatic Q2 places. Quartararo was P12 with five minutes to go, with title rival Bagnaia looking comfortable – after his crash in FP1 – in P5. No improvements were made by the Frenchman in the closing stages, meaning Quartararo would end Day 1 down in P16, with Pecco – as things stand – making his way into Q2 in P8.
Who’s inside the top 10?
Iker Lecuona (Tech3 KTM Factory Racing) enjoyed a solid day at the office in the tricky conditions, the Spaniard ends Friday in P4 on the combined standings after finishing FP1 in ninth. Miguel Oliveira (Red Bull KTM Factory Racing) is 1.2s down on Miller in P5, the Portuguese rider claimed top 10s in both sessions too, with rookie Luca Marini (SKY VR46 Avintia) impressing in P6.
Lorenzo Savadori (Aprilia Racing Team Gresini), wildcarding at Misano, produced some familiar classy wet weather riding to pocket a P7 on Friday, the Italian sits fractionally ahead of Bagnaia in P8. Danilo Petrucci (Tech3 KTM Factory Racing) and Jorge Martin (Pramac Racing) are the final two riders currently occupying top 10 positions, something that could be crucial if mother nature doesn’t play nice on Saturday morning.
A huge FP3 coming up
All eyes will be pointing towards the skies when the riders open their curtains ahead of FP3, with plenty of big names – including Quartararo – needing to find some pace in the wet conditions if they are to make it straight into Q2. Reigning World Champion Joan Mir (Team Suzuki Ecstar), San Marino GP podium finisher Enea Bastianini (Avintia Esponsorama) and eight-time World Champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda Team) are just three names sitting outside the top 10, so you don’t want to miss what unfolds in FP3.

Maverick Vinales: "I felt lost on the track today": "It was important to lap for two sessions in the wet, because everything is slower and you can perfectly identify where to improve. With the Aprilia I still suffer under braking"
Quartararo: "Difficult to beat the Ducatis with the Yamaha in the wet": "Their power makes the difference even more. I don't know what happens when the track dries up, the M1 has all the possible defects in those conditions"
David Emmett: Jack Miller says the secret to the Ducati's speed in the wet (apart from the riders!) is mechanical grip. Bike gives loads of feedback, easier to push on and react
From 2023, the minimum age for all three classes of Grand Prix motorcycle racing will be raised from 16 to 18. CEV will be 16, Rookies Cup will be 15, and national Moto3 classes will be 14.
Morbidelli: "I am thrilled that a legend like Rossi will stop racing": "I too will be a spectator of the last Vale race at Misano. I must say that my leg is better. Clinically there are two months to full recovery but I already feel a lot Well"
Bagnaia: "the only strategy to beat Quartararo is to play everything: I'll do it": "Recovering 52 points will be difficult and Sunday it could rain, so it will be a complex situation. But I'll always attack. The electric Ducati? I don't know if I want to try it"
Marquez: “My path to recovery is proceeding too slowly”: “That’s why my return has been complicated and long. Misano? I’ll start again with the confidence I felt in the tests and not from the win in Austin.”
Dovizioso: "I'm not fast, but my indications are important for Yamaha": "Even if you are not the fastest on a bike, when you come from another bike your feedback is more truthful.
Rossi: "I need a stunt double to concentrate on the race": "It's nice but I have a lot of commitments in these last GPs. Minimum age of 18? It won't solve everything, it's the attitude of the young people on the track that has to change".

David Emmett: Loris Baz making some very strong and important points. The classes need to change too. Bikes need to punish mistakes. Not the case in Moto3.

Mat Oxley: Cool and damp today, so the left-handers - Turns 2, 6, 8, 15 and 16 - were very tricky today because not enough heat in the left side of the tyres. This is MM93 at Turn 2

Neil Morrison: Dream day for Ducati / Bagnaia here at Misano. 3 Dukes on the front row and 5 ahead of Quartararo, back on the 5th row. Huge challenge for the Frenchman tomorrow. Bad timing for Fabio to suffer his worst qualifying performance in MotoGP (15th), even if he rode really well in Q1. Worst qualifying position since his days in Moto2, the German GP in 2018.

Lowes on pole after Moto2 crash-fest
Sam Lowes secured pole position for his ‘second-home’ race with Marc VDS teammate Augusto Fernandez joining him on the Misano front row.
Speed Up’s Jorge Navarro completed the Parc Fermé celebrations, in second, after another crash-filled session with both Red Bull KTM’s qualifying off the front three rows for the Emilia Romagna GP.
Marco Bezzecchi faced the Q1 fight alongside Navarro and Fabio Di Giannantonio as the final qualifying show got up to speed. Cameron Beaubier returning to action after sitting out of FP3 due to the poor conditions while the second American, Joe Roberts missed the rest of the Misano weekend due to impending surgery on his fractured collarbone.
Nicolo Bulega became the first faller of the session before Bezzecchi suffered a fast turn nine crash on just his third hot lap. Liqui Moly Intact riders Tony Arbolino and Marcel Schrotter doing likewise seconds later. Further crashes found Tommaso Marcon, Barry Baltus, Simone Corsi and Mattia Casadei down in the gravel as the attrition rate soared to eight riders by the halfway stage.
Navarro headed the remaining riders from Beaubier, Di Giannantonio and Bo Bendsneyder with Hector Garzo adrift of the promotion zone. Three minutes to go found the Flexbox machine rise to second before Bendsneyder then Albert Arenas claimed the place. The chequered flag dropped with Navarro in charge from Arenas, Garzo and Bendsneyder, Beaubier and Di Giannantonio missing out on Q2 and heading the seventh row for Sunday’s contest.
The final shootout saw Navarro continue his front running pace as he benefitted from his previous knowledge. Bendsneyder initially doing likewise before Raul and Augusto Fernandez began their campaigns from second and third. Lowes took fourth on his third lap of qualifying before Aron Canet stole the spot but the Brit hit back with a P2 worthy effort.
A massive incident saw both Xavi Vierge and Jake Dixon crash out at the final corner in quick succession on hot laps, the yellow flags denying Lowes his red-sector lap time as he regrouped and went again.
Celestino Vietti claimed fourth before immediately crashing out at the opening corner as Ai Ogura also went down, this time at turn 15. Stefano Manzi became the next victim of the cold conditions, from fifth in the standings, Raul Fernandez barrelling out at turn two, sitting eighth, next time round.
Canet was up to third as the penultimate minute clicked down, Lowes launching for pole with a 1’36.551 on his eighth lap with the team hesitant to celebrate due to the timing of the yellow flag removal in the last sector.
The hesitation was short-lived, however, as the Marc VDS rider consolidated with a 1’36.510 on his next and final lap to secure the celebrations. Navarro and teammate Fernandez joined Lowes on the front row with Canet, Vietti and Marcos Ramirez completing row two. Manzi, Tom Luthi and Arenas secured seventh to ninth with KTM’s title challengers Fernandez and Remy Gardner starting 10th and 14th respectively

Nick Harris: BIG HAIR,BIG VOICE AND BIG HEART Ten years ago today we lost Marco Simoncelli at Sepang. It's an afternoon none of us who were there will ever forget. We will also never forget Marco.
Marquez: “I don’t have a good relationship with Rossi, but he’s to be admired”: “Valentino has done something unique in this world, and it will hardly be repeated. Even if he won’t be racing next year, the yellow won’t disappear.”
Savadori to undergo operation for broken right collarbone: Lorenzo will now go to Modena for surgery and will also be forced to miss the Portimao GP where he was scheduled to wild card
